From Whitney Houston to Elvis, there is no shortage of iconic singers who inspire sweeping films that dramatize their life stories. No matter the genre, cinematic features have captured the careers of the King of Rock and Roll Elvis Presley to country singer Jonny Cash. Most recently, Back to Black (2024) launched in theaters to capture the life and musical career of Amy Winehouse.
Still other films in the works will add to the canon of singer biography movies, like Timothée Chalamet’s upcoming portrayal of Bob Dylan in A Complete Unknown and nephew to Jaafar Jackson’s portrayal of his uncle the late Michael Jackson in Michael.

Tortured genius, chaotic addict or frustrated homemaker? As Sam Taylor-Johnson’s biopic hits cinemas, we look at how its depiction compares with previous accounts of the singer’s life
From the moment it was announced, in July 2022, the Amy Winehouse biopic Back to Black has been plagued by controversy, with fans criticising everything from the casting choices (Industry star Marisa Abela plays the singer) to the timing, with some people claiming not enough years have passed since Winehouse’s death from alcohol poisoning in 2011.
Biopics of famous musicians can be hugely lucrative but they’re also a minefield. Bohemian Rhapsody, the 2018 Freddie Mercury biopic, was widely criticised for downplaying the singer’s gay partners in favour of his relationship with Mary Austin, but ended up grossing $910m (£718m). Like Bohemian Rhapsody, Back to Black is authorised by and made with the involvement of the lead character’s estate.

More than 1,400 of Freddie Mercury ‘s personal items, including his flamboyant stage costumes, handwritten drafts of “Bohemian Rhapsody” and the baby grand piano he used to compose Queen’s greatest hits, are going on display in a free exhibition at Sotheby’s London ahead of their sale.
The vast collection of the singer’s personal belongings, which had been left to Mercury’s close friend Mary Austin, had remained undisturbed in his west London mansion for 30 years since his death in 1991.
Austin, 72, said in a BBC interview in April that she has decided to sell almost all the items to “close this very special chapter in my life” and “put my affairs in order.”
Among the hundreds of Mercury’s personal treasures were previously unseen working drafts of hits “Don’t Stop Me Now,” “We Are the Champions” and ”Somebody to Love”.

Los Angeles, Aug 6 (Ians) Queen band member Freddie Mercury’s silver moustache comb that originally cost him $115 could rake in over $63K at auction.
It is one of more than 1,400 of his belongings going under the hammer at a Sotheby’s sale next month, reports mirror.co.uk.
The Queen frontman’s former live-in Pa Peter Freestone predicts fans will go wild for items like the mustache comb because the singer still exerts a kind of magic more than 30 years after his death.
Peter said: “It cost about 90 pounds. It was from Tiffany & Co, one of their little gift things. But it could go for 50,000 pounds because they will be paying for the DNA of Freddie.”
Peter, 68, lived with Freddie for 12 years in Kensington, west London, until his death from Aids in 1991. He said Freddie would secretly send him to auctions armed with blank cheques because prices would shoot...

“Freddie Mercury, A World of His Own” is the name of the auction at Sotheby’s, New Bond St, London until September 5.
Among the items on the block: a black lacquered baby grand piano at which Freddie Mercury composed and developed some of Queen’s biggest hits, including “Bohemian Rhapsody.” It is the centerpiece of a sale expected to raise millions.
Almost 30,000 objects, artworks, items of clothing and furniture, photographs, handwritten lyrics and other items are up for auction. The items include his gold and platinum records to personal Polaroid photographs.
Mercury died in 1991 at the age of 45, just 24 hours after he revealed that he had AIDS.

More than 1,500 personal items belonging to Queen frontman Freddie Mercury are to be auctioned off.
The ‘Bohemian Rhapsody’ singer built up a collection of flamboyant stage costumes, furniture and artwork throughout his remarkable life, reports mirror.co.uk.
“I like to be surrounded by splendid things,” he once said.
“I want to lead the Victorian life surrounded by exquisite clutter.”
He kept everything at his home in Kensington, west London, which he left to friend Mary Austin when he died from complications related to AIDS at the age of 45.
Freddie’s death in 1991 came just one day after he publicly revealed he had been diagnosed with the illness.
Now Mary, who once dated Freddie before he came out as gay, is auctioning off most of his possessions, save for a few personal mementos.

Lucy Boynton and Rami Malek's romance dates back to 2018. After much speculation, Malek confirmed their relationship at the Palm Springs International Film Festival on Jan. 3, 2019. While accepting the award for breakthrough artist, he thanked Boynton for her support, adding, "You have been my ally, my confidant, my love."

Ian Bonhôte has signed up to direct the biopic of singer Marianne Faithfull; Lucy Boynton is to star in the film set in mid-1960s London. Ian Bonhôte, co-director of the BAFTA-nominated documentary McQueen, has boarded Faithfull, a biopic of British singer, songwriter and actress Marianne Faithfull. The film will star Lucy Boynton, best known for her appearance as Mary Austin, Freddy Mercury’s love interest in Bohemian Rhapsody. Boynton will also serve as an executive producer on the project. The film is being authorised by Marianne Faithfull, who is reportedly “delighted that my story is finally being made”. The production is scheduled to shoot later this year. The film is set in the mid-1960s, when Faithfull was dating Rolling Stones frontman Mick Jagger. No actor is currently attached to play Jagger. Faithfull inspired many of the British band’s greatest hits. The film will deal with her rise and fall,...
“The Two Popes” is Anthony McCarten’s third Academy Award nomination as a screenwriter, all for true stories: He was nominated for “The Theory of Everything,” which focused on the domestic life of Als-frozen physicist Stephen Hawking (Eddie Redmayne) and his wife Jane (Felicity Jones), and Prime Minister Winston Churchill (Gary Oldman) facing war in “Darkest Hour.” Although “The Two Popes” is in the Adapted Screenplay category, all were self generated: It’s based on McCarten’s own play.
McCarten was visiting St. Peter’s Square with his wife when he started wondering about how this was “the first time in 500 years that we have two popes living,” he said. He started writing a screenplay, a stage play, and a novel, and his agents sent him to pitch the idea to studio executives. The first batch didn’t warm to a film about ideas that starred two old men. Lucy Boyton will be stepping into the iconic shoes of rock singer Marianne Faithfull in an upcoming biopic, Deadline reports. While details about the film are incredibly slim at the moment, Boynton is reportedly in talks to also make her debut as executive producer when production begins next Summer. This is an exciting move for Boynton, who portrayed Freddie Mercury's partner Mary Austin, alongside Rami Malek in Bohemian Rhapsody, and previously played Raphina, a musician's love interest in the musical drama Sing Street.

Iconic Queen frontman Freddie Mercury had once boasted about his "enormous sex drive", and how he would "go to bed with anything".
The late Mercury looked to push the boundaries when it came to bedroom antics and would go to extremes to satisfy his desires. After dating Mary Austin for five years, once they had split, the rockstar absolutely did not hold back while hunting for carnal pleasure, reports "mirror.co.uk".
The British singer-songwriter passed away on November 24, 1991, at the age of 45. He was suffering from AIDS at the time of death.
Facts about Mercury's sexual drive come to fore in a book, "Freddie Mercury: A life, In His Own Words", compiled and edited by Greg Brooks and Simon Lupton. The book has a foreword by Mercury's mother Jer Bulsara and is being billed by critics as the nearest thing to being the late singer's autobiography. It is a witty,...

Freddie Mercury is possibly one of the most iconic stars of the 20th century. As the lead singer of ‘Queen’, he achieved phenomenal success with his music. He also became known for his fashion sense and his stage presence. His personal life also attracted a lot of attention, even after his death in 1991. Most people remember him being in a same-sex relationship, which is why he has become a gay icon. What many people forget is that Freddie Mercury had previously had a long-standing relationship with a woman who he had described as his true love. When the film

The success of Bohemian Rhapsody last year isn’t lost upon many. The Queen biopic walked away with four Academy Awards, including Best Actor for Rami Malek, the big prize at the Golden Globes, and made about $900 million at the worldwide box office. That’s a lot of money that the late Freddie Mercury may not get to see himself, but it looks like his family will get their share of the film’s profits.
When Mercury died in 1991, he left his London mansion and 50% of his future earnings to Mary Austin, the “love of his life” and lifelong friend portrayed by Lucy Boynton in the movie. The other 50% was divided among his family: his parents, who have since passed, and his sister, Kashmira Bulsara.
According to Sunday Express, Austin will be making at least $60 million from Bohemian Rhapsody and Bulsara is looking at around $25 million. The remaining members of Queen,...

The Oscar-winning “Bohemian Rhapsody” finally opened in select Chinese theaters on March 22 and, as expected, was edited to remove all traces of Freddie Mercury’s homosexuality. The censorship is hardly a surprise given China’s strict policies on exhibiting Lgbtq content. Ridley Scott’s “Alien: Covenant” was released in China without the kiss between Michael Fassbender and himself, for instance, while films like Ang Lee’s “Brokeback Mountain” were denied a release. Luca Guadagnino’s “Call Me By Your Name,” meanwhile, was pulled from the Beijing International Film Festival in 2017.
As for “Bohemian Rhapsody,” the Associated Press reports China has removed every line of dialogue that directly mentions homosexuality or bisexuality. When a report asks Mercury about his “sexual orientation” during a press conference scene, the subtitle has been changed to “sex life.” One major scene between Mercury (Rami Malek) and his girlfriend Mary Austin (Lucy Boynton) where the singer...

Robert Mapplethorpe shot flowers, children, celebs (Warhol, Capote, the young Arnold Schwarzenegger) and himself in high-contrast black-and-white that commanded attention. But what made him infamous and iconic were his portraits of nudes, often reduced to body parts (a hand, a torso, a black penis enveloped in white hands) and often in Bdsm positions that increasingly reflected his queer-world obsessions. A year after Mapplethorpe’s death, a retrospective of his work at the Contemporary Arts Center in Cincinnati was charged with obscenity simply for displaying his so-called “dirty pictures,” creating a...

Rami Malek took a tumble off the Oscars stage after accepting the Academy Award for best actor on Sunday night.
Malek appears to have accidentally slipped while trying to exit the stage after the live broadcast had panned away from him. The “Bohemian Rhapsody” star had to set his Oscar down on the edge of the stage as audience members sitting in the front row came to his aid.
Paramedics were quickly called to the scene, and treated Malek from a seat in the front row. He was later moved to a private area backstage, but did not appear to be visibly hurt when he arrived in the press room later to speak. Malek’s reps declined to comment.

Drawn to Freddie Mercury's unparalleled voice and flamboyance, drawn to the song lyrics that have proved themselves indelible in our collective memory, like so many, I grew up idolizing the Queen frontman. This was before I knew about his sexuality - or even my own - but in many ways, it wasn't a secret. His performance of gender and masculinity was coded in queerness, nuances during the '70s and '80s that now, in hindsight, seem to scream with clarity.
At that time, Freddie Mercury wasn't able to be publicly out and have the career that he did. That's what makes the recent Queen biopic, Bohemian Rhapsody, a movie just as scared of his sexuality, so distressing. As the film, which won the Golden Globe for best motion picture drama and best actor for lead Rami Malek, continues to receive accolades, Hollywood is signaling that this is the gold standard for queer storytelling.
