DC Zoom, of which this volume is one of the launch titles, is an imprint aimed at the 8-12 age range. That, of course, was probably the age range comics were actually aimed at once upon a time, until the comics ended up growing up with their fans. This left young fans a bit adrift, though admittedly both DC and Marvel have had several stabs at all age comics over the last three decades. DC Zoom is important because DC have been putting some real effort into it, recruiting some big name authors and launching some major marketing. I love the concept, but what about the execution? Let’s take a look.
As much as we all love Superman and Batman, I think it’s fair to say kids find them a tad difficult to relate to.

A while back, everyone I knew was raving about how fantastic Mockingbird was ever since Chelsea Cain started to write it. Then she got chased off Twitter (some say because of this), and I felt I needed to check it out.
Women writers (and all women) (and all people of good conscience) need to support each other in the face of harassment and threats. Buying a book is literally the least I could do at the time.
Apparently so did everybody else, because I couldn’t find the first Mockingbird collection anywhere. It was back-ordered on Amazon, so, to be supportive, I downloaded a prose novel of hers for my Kindle.
Since I didn’t know anything about her or her novels, I chose the first one in her Archie Sheridan series. Sheridan is a cop in Portland, Oregon, who led a serial killer task force for ten years. Then...

Audiences might expect the Peter Pan prequel Pan to be a big screen adaptation of humorist Dave Barry’s and writer Ridley Pearson’s bestselling “Peter and the Starcatchers,” a funny, clever, imaginative prequel to J.M. Barrie’s beloved classic “Peter Pan,” or perhaps an adaption of the smart, funny, creative Broadway musical they wrote, “Peter and the Starcatcher,” a Tony Award-winning production that delighted grown-ups as well as kids.
Sadly, Pan is neither.
Pan is a kind of prequel to Peter Pan, but the cleverness, charm and humor of “Peter and the Starcatcher” are entirely missing in this disappointing big-budget extravaganza. Instead, “Pan” features a line-up of Hollywood stars, lavish costumes and sets with dazzling visual effects but a script cobbled together from tired, overly familiar kid’s adventure movie tropes, a movie that brings to mind 2013’s “The Lone Ranger.” It seems like the filmmakers...

Writers tend to be lone wolves, but Ridley Pearson, the prolific author of both adult and children’s thrillers (including the Peter and the Starcatcher series), is clearly a team player. On a panel today at BookCon with fellow kids’ adventure author James Dashner (of the Maze Runner series), he talked, among other things, about his far-flung and often very entertaining collaborations from Dave Barry to the Disney Corporation. On Stephen King, with whom Pearson is in the novelist super-group The Rock Bottom Remainders: What’s interesting about Stephen is he’s an absolutely normal guy. He’s not one of these macabre, dressed in all black kind of guys. But it turns out that his fans are psycho. We played in Nashville, and we always ended with Stephen because that’s how we knew we’d get the most applause. This band is the worst band you’ve ever heard,...

Even though the people that occupy the future-set world of Veronica Roth’s novel are separated into different factions with different characteristics, all of the people at the Ronnie’s 20 Cine in St. Louis Tuesday night were clearly all gathered for the same thing: Divergent. The young adult series that has spawned three books and a legion of fans is making its way into theaters with the film Divergent on March 21.
Fans of all ages came out to see two of the actors from the film for a red carpet premiere Tuesday night in St. Louis. Some of these fans were even lucky enough to be the first to see the highly-anticipated film.
Christian Madsen who plays Al and Ben Lloyd-Hughes who plays Will received a warm reception from fans who waited hours to meet the stars behind their literary heroes. Groups of young girls squealed with excitement when the...

The Rock Bottom Remainders are a weird idea. The concept of famous writers like Stephen King, Dave Barry, and Amy Tan getting together to form a mediocre rock band brings to mind your middle-aged dad and his drinking buddies declaring that they’re gonna get the old college band back together, someday. But it’s different than that, richer than that. The Rbr’s previous jam-book memoir, Mid-Life Confidential, went a long way toward explanation. One of the benefits of having your vanity band made up of all talented writers is that they have no trouble articulating what they’re doing and why they’re doing it. For some, it’s a way to try something outside their comfort zone; for some, it’s a way to connect with people who understand the unique problems of bestselling writers; and for some, it’s about discovering whether they can be good...

Much is being made of the fact that Stephen King has—for the time being—decided to forego an eBook of his latest novel, Joyland. Several articles imply that he is no longer a fan of the digital format. Others argue that he shouldn’t get to decide how people experience a book, ignoring the fact that digital rights are separate from print rights and that authors get to choose how to exploit them. As illustrated in my first essay here at FEARnet, King has long been a champion of eBooks—an innovator, even. There was a digital version of The Wind Through the Keyhole last year and there will be one of Doctor Sleep later on this year. King isn’t challenging the format. He simply wants readers to have the retro feeling of holding a paperback in this one case. That’s what Hard Case Crime is all about,...

Now that the dust has settled around “The Hunger Games” helmer Gary Ross’ exit following the first entry in the multi-million dollar film adaptation of Suzanne Collins’ popular book series, it looks as if he’s finally decided to start picking that next project he can use his 'Hunger Games' cachet on to get going. He did sign on for "Houdini" over at Summit, and while he was rumored to be eyeing "Tarzan" at Warner Bros., we were told the director would not be swinging from the jungle vines anytime soon. Instead, it was revealed Ross would be heading to Neverland with Disney, tackling the tale of another group of kids – albeit ones who never grow up. Ross was negotiating to helm “Peter Pan and the Starcatchers” -- a Peter Pan prequel of sorts based on the novel by Dave Barry and Ridley Pearson – but now Deadline is reporting that...

"The Hunger Games" helmer Gary Ross has finally locked down his next directing vehicle - "Peter And The Starcatchers" for Disney Pictures says Deadline.
The project is adaptation of the 2004 fantasy novel by Dave Barry and Ridley Pearson, which itself was recently turned into a multi-Tony winning musical. Jesse Wigutow is adapting the script with the studio currently waiting on a new draft to be delivered in October.
A prequel of a kind to J.M. Barrie's "Peter Pan", the story follows a young Peter who befriends Molly, a shipmate he meets on the Never Land ship headed toward King Zarboff.
Molly tells Peter of a mysterious trunk filled with magical starstuff that must remain out of the hands of the pirate Black Stache (who will lose his hand and become Captain Hook). Peter and Molly lead an effort to recover the trunk.

"The Hunger Games" director Gary Ross is coming on board to direct "Peter and the Starcatchers" for Disney, a spokesman for the director told TheWrap on Monday. A prequel of sorts to the story of Peter Pan, the film is an adaptation of Dave Barry and Ridley Pearson's best-selling novel. Jesse Wigutow is finalizing a script. Gary Ross, coming off of the success of "The Hunger Games," was in one of the most enviable positions in Hollywood. After all, there's no sweeter moment than when you've just had a tremendous commercial hit and you're able to take your time and pick your follow-up from a huge selection of possible projects. Ross was already an A-list filmmaker, so the success didn't radically change things for him, but it did put whatever choice he made under a much brighter spotlight. Disney purchased the rights to the Peter Pan novels by Dave Barry and Ridley Pearson several years ago, and...

After establishing himself as much more of a household name thanks to The Hunger Games this year, Gary Ross is moving on to his next project, and it's once again going to be a big one. He's now set to direct Peter and the Starcatchers, an adaptation of the novel by Dave Barry and Ridley Pearson that's currently running as a hit Broadway production as well. Ross had been weighing the project back in June, but now Deadline reports he's committed, with hopes to start directing "as quickly as possible" next year. Ross had also been in talks with Summit to make The Secret Life of Houdini, one of a handful of Houdini projects out there, but he apparently wanted to give Starcatchers his full attention. Though the Disney project will inevitably be sold as a Peter Pan prequel, especially since Disney's got their own animated Peter Pan back in...

Ross was reportedly also considering "The Secret Life of Houdini," but the Deadline report claimed that a deal was not close for that project.

Earlier this summer Gary Ross (The Hunger Games) pulled out of the running to direct The Hunger Games: Catching Fire, and ended up talking to Disney about developing a project for them called Peter and the Starcatchers. According to Deadline, he's officially secured the directing gig and it will be his next film project. Vince Vaughn made a name for himself in comedies like Swingers, Old School, and Wedding Crashers, but he's seen a bit of action in movies like The Lost World, The Cell, and Mr. and Mrs. Smith, too. Though he certainly hasn't left comedy behind - see the red-band outtake trailer for The Watch as an example - it seems Vaughn is attempting to transition into the action genre. Deadline reports that the actor's Wild West Picture Show Productions has picked up the rights to Ridley Pearson's novel The Risk Agent for Vaughn to produce and star in. It's a hostage thriller set in Shanghai, which is new territory for the actor. Read on! The movie begins with the kidnapping of a Chinese national working at an American construction company and follows an extraction team from a firm called Rutherford Risk as they try to track down the missing worker.

It seems like Gary Ross might have found that different project he wanted to pursue that caused him to turn down a directing gig on "Catching Fire."

He is reportedly negotiating to direct Disney's upcoming adaptation of Dave Barry and Ridley Pearson's children's novel "Peter and the Starcatchers," which serves as a prequel of sorts to "Peter Pan."
Ross has never been a director to prefer helming children's stories over adult ones, so there must be something very special (or very profitable) drawing him towards "Peter and the Starcatchers." "The Hunger Games" must have been a good way to prep him for the story, though this Disney project likely won't be nearly as gritty and violent. With Gary Ross turning down the opportunity to direct The Hunger Games sequel Catching Fire a couple of months ago, you had to assume there was probably something even bigger on the horizon for him. It looks like Gary Ross has traded in Katniss Everdeen for Peter Pan. According to The Hollywood Reporter, the director of The Hunger Games is in talks with Disney to venture to Never Land and bring the 2004 children’s adventure novel Peter and the Starcatchers to the big screen.
The story is a Peter Pan prequel that follows young Peter, who he meets a girl named Molly and goes on an adventure to keep a “trunk filled with magical starstuff” out of the hands of the evil Black Stache, a pirate who eventually loses his hand and becomes Captain Hook.
Written by Dave Barry and Ridley Pearson, Starcatchers was turned into an off-Broadway play of the same name minus the last “s” and later went on-Broadway to win five Tony Awards this year. Jesse Wigutow is adapting it for film, but you can expect Ross to do some work on...

The Hunger Games director Gary Ross is in talks with Disney to develop their adaptation of the novel Peter and the Starcatchers. Dave Barry and Ridley Pierson wrote the book, that has already been made into a Tony Award-winning Broadway production. As you might expect, the novel is the first in a series, which means we'll most likely see a movie franchise if the first film does as well as the studio hopes.
The story is a Peter Pan origin, that follows "a young Peter who befriends Molly, a shipmate he meets on the Never Land ship headed towards King Zarboff. Molly tells Peter of a mysterious trunk filled with magical starstuff that must remain out of the hands of the pirate Black Stache (who will lose his hand and become Captain Hook). Together Peter and Molly lead an effort to recover the trunk, which takes them on a treacherous journey.

Since deciding not to return to direct Hunger Games sequel Catching Fire, Gary Ross has been lining up one or two alternative movies to consider as his next gig. He’s already got a Houdini project bubbling away, but The Hollywood Reporter brings word that he’s also negotiating to take on Peter And The Starcatchers for Disney.Jesse Wigutow is on board to write the script, which adapts Dave Barry and Ridley Pearson’s 2004 book. Starcatchers is a sort of Peter Pan prequel, which finds a young Pete befriending a girl named Molly while on board a Never Land ship. She reveals the existence of a trunk filled with magical starstuff that has to be kept from the hands of the devious pirate Black 'Stache' Moustache, which results in an adventure. And, if you didn’t already guess it, in Black Stache losing a hand on his way to becoming Captain Hook.

After exiting "The Hunger Games" franchise earlier this year, director Gary Ross has been kicking the tires on a few movies. He signed on for "Houdini" over at Summit, and while he was rumored to be eyeing "Tarzan" at Warner Bros., reps for the director told us that simply wasn't the case. But having already proven he can get a new franchise off the ground, Disney is hoping he can take an established name to the next level. Since the spring of 2011, Disney has been developing "Peter And The Starcatchers," a Peter Pan prequel of sorts based on the novel by Dave Barry and Ridley Pearson. Just a couple of months ago, Jesse Wigutow ("Eragon") was brought on and now THR reports that Ross is negotiating to direct. The story takes place before the events in "Peter Pan" and follows Peter and Molly running around merry old England searching for treasure while battling pirates,...

After launching The Hunger Games film franchise, and leaving the sequel for director Francis Lawrence to inherit, it sounds like director Gary Ross is sticking with adapting books for the big screen. THR has word that Ross is developing Dave Barry and Ridley Pearson's Peter Pan centric children adventure novel Peter and the Starcatchers to direct himself at Disney. The book has already found success as a Tony award winning off-Broadway production, and the story is essentially a prequel that sets Peter and the infamous Lost Boys on an adventure to keep the magical "starstuff" away from the evil pirate Black Stache. Read on! Jesse Wigutow is adapting the book which has Peter befriending a girl named Molly who works on a Neverland ship heading towards King Zarboff. It is Molly who tells Peter about the starstuff, leading them to attempt to recover the trunk from Black Stache, who...

Much like how we now have two "Die Hard in the White House" movies in development - Antoine Fuqua's Olympus Has Fallen and Roland Emmerich's White House Down - both Sony and Disney are currently fighting to release their upcoming Peter Pan prequel first. Sony's, titled Neverland, has made quite a bit of progress since it was announced last year and has Channing Tatum set to star and reportedly Warrior director Gavin O'Connor is in the mix to direct. But Disney isn't slacking off either. Just a couple months ago the studio hired a writer to pen the adaptation of the 2004 children's novel Peter and the Starcatchers and now it seems they may have found the right man to direct it. THR has learned that Gary Ross is now in talks to helm Disney's Peter Pan film. The novel was written by Dave Barry and Ridley Pearson and...

Everyone knows the story of Peter Pan, a boy who could fly, crossed swords with the dangerous swashbuckler Captain Hook and refused to grow up. But ever wonder how Peter got to Never Land? J.M. Barrie, who created the character, certainly had his own ideas, but humorist Dave Barry and suspense novelist Ridley Pearson offered their own explanation with the 2004 children's novel Peter and the Starcatchers. In this bestseller, they suggest that before there was Peter and Wendy there were Peter and Molly, going on a pirate ship adventure to uncover the magic behind "starstuff." Since it's release Peter and the Starcatchers has spawned a Disney-owned book series as well as a Broadway play. Now in the wake of the lively stage show scoring an incredible nine Tony nods.making it the most Tony-nominated production currently on Broadway.Disney has begun development on a movie adaptation. Score one for the self-published author. In a bidding war comparable to the recent "50 Shades of Grey" face-off, 20th Century Fox has acquired the film rights for Hugh Howey's self-published, post-apocalyptic e-book, "Wool." Originally started as a stand-alone story in 2011, fervor over Howey's work led to more installments, the first five of which have been compiled into a omnibus edition. Howey self-published "Wool" through Amazon, and, after positive word-of-mouth, sold over 140,000 copies through e-book in just under six months. Not bad for a guy who worked as a yacht captain for eight years before pursuing a literary career (can't make stuff like that up).
Ridley and Tony Scott’s Scott Free are partnering with Film Rites’ Steve Zaillian and Garrett Basch for the film version of "Wool," which is set on a decimated Earth and follows the remains of humanity living in an enormous silo. Fox is clearly setting its...

There's no doubt about it: J.M. Barrie's classic Peter Pan is so hot right now. Neverland's favorite son is already the subject of two different movies in development, and now Deadline reports that another story about the ultimate Lost Boy is in the works at Disney, the studio that brought us Peter's animated adventures way back in 1953. Jesse Wigutow will adapt Dave Barry and Ridley Pearson's book Peter and the Starcatchers, which is another Peter Pan origin story that sets Peter and the infamous Lost Boys on an adventure to make sure that magical "starstuff" stays out of the hands of the evil pirate Black Stache. My first reaction to this was to roll my eyes, but this story is currently running as a successful Broadway play and just received nine Tony Award nominations, so perhaps there's something to this story that separates it from all the other...

Barbara Chai The scene at the Disney Dinner
As final events surrounding BookExpo America came to a close yesterday, I reflected on the whirlwind of activity of the past week – some of it wearying, some of it winning.
The moment I may remember most is when Dave Barry called me an “ignorant slut.”
Yup, he used the same phrase made famous in the “Saturday Night Live” skits of the 1970s. And the same s-word that got MSNBC host Ed Schultz in trouble earlier this week.

Jon Favreau is in talks to direct Magic Kingdom, a movie set up at Disney (naturally) about theme park attractions that come to life (a la Fox’s Night at the Museum).
Favreau is finishing his edit on Cowboys & Aliens, the genre mashup starring Daniel Craig and Harrison Ford, for a July 29, 2011 release. In the meantime, Disney will search for a new screenwriter to bring the Kingdom’s various inanimate objects to life, according to Deadline. Ron Moore (”Battlestar Galactica”) wrote the original draft that was shelved recently.
The Magic Kingdom is one of four theme parks at Disney World in Orlando, Florida, and it’s segmented into seven themed “lands.” For instance, “Adventureland” (no relation to the Greg Mottola comedy) houses the attractions “Pirates of the Caribbean” (you may have heard of it) and “Jungle Cruise” while “Fantasyland” is home to the infinitely annoying “it’s a small world...
