Diane Keaton has impressed the audience with remarkable performances in timeless classics like The Godfather, Manhattan, and Reds. She has quite the collection of awards to her name including some very prestigious ones and why wouldn’t she? She’s Diane Keaton, after all. Diane Keaton redefined the modern heroine in cinema and brought absolute authenticity to every character she set out to conquer.
A still from The Godfather (1972) | Paramount Pictures
One of the finest works of Diane Keaton’s career so far has got to be the 1977 film, Annie Hall, where she played the titular character. The actress’ performance was so raw and well-received that she went on to win her first and only Academy Award. However, she starred in yet another brilliant film in the same year that was equally deserving of the nomination and many fans believe that she should’ve won an Oscar for this film instead.

“Expats,” the immense yet intimate six-part series from director and showrunner Lulu Wang, tells the story of three American women living in Hong Kong who become inextricably linked by tragedy. That loss, so harrowing it’s often kept vague in plot synopses, is the disappearance of a young boy. Left unattended in a crowded night market for a split second, Gus (Connor James) is just gone. There’s no indication if he’s been taken or he merely wandered off. His mother, Margaret (Nicole Kidman), is inconsolable.

“The end goal is always to get at the emotion,” declares “Expats” editor Matt Friedman. For our recent webchat he adds, “That’s really what I love about working with Lulu. Everything is so thought through and so smartly put together on just so many different levels. It’s like peeling an onion. It’s like there’s stuff under stuff, under stuff, under stuff, under stuff,” he says. “Are there other editorial things that we can do? Maybe sit in the shot a little bit longer in order to give the audience time to find the character themselves, whereas if you’re cutting in close, you don’t need as much time to find the character. We think about things like that, but the end goal is the emotion. Whenever I’m cutting anything, what I’m thinking about is, is this getting me to where I want the audience to be,...

When “Expats” showrunner and director Lulu Wang was penning the script for episode 4, she featured a scene where Hilary gets trapped in the elevator with her mother. But little did she know, actress Sarayu Blue was claustrophobic. “That’s my biggest fear,” Blue says.
Wang tells Variety‘s Awards Circuit Podcast that she learned about Blue’s unease when the production, which shot during Covid, was in quarantine. “She had to be stuck in a hotel, a glass box for 21 days, so there were a lot of conversations about the panic, and it was really challenging,” says Wang. “I thought, ‘Oh, that’s going to be fun because I’ve written a whole episode where she’s stuck in an elevator.”
On this episode, Wang and Blue discuss their Prime Video series, and the reactions they’ve received from fans and family. Before that, the Roundtable discusses what’s going on with “Shogun,...

Anya Taylor-Joy is now one of the most promising actresses of the industry, proving her talent by the performances in the Netflix miniseries The Queen's Gambit (2020), the black comedy The Menu (2022) and the upcoming Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga.

Madonna, the iconic “Queen of Pop,” stands at a height of 5ft 3 ¼ inches (160.7 cm) with a peak height of 5ft 4 inches (162.6 cm).

The Impact of Height in Celebrity Self-Perception: Madonna’s Perspective
She once mentioned feeling like a “shrimp” in an interview due to her height, although she believed it was average. For context, the average American woman typically has a height of around 5 feet 4 inches.
I’ve always wanted to be taller. I feel like a shrimp, but that’s the way it goes. I’m five-foot four-and-a-half-inches – that’s actually average. Everything about me is average. Everything’s normal, in the books. It’s the things inside me that make me not average.

“I don’t want to distract from the story, as my purpose is always to support the characters. But because we are showing Hong Kong a lot, I also wanted to make sure I show Hong Kong in the right perspective” explains production designer Yong Ok Lee about designing the sets for Amazon Prime Video’s limited series “Expats.” For our recent webchat the Korean designer adds, “I’m not Cantonese. I don’t know their culture,” noting that she “researched a lot of the background about Hong Kong politics, society and economy, but also I wanted to make sure that I can balance between an expat and a local perspective, because it’s not all about Hong Kong locals, it’s also about expats from their perspective.” Watch our exclusive video interview above.

When actress-producer Nicole Kidman and filmmaker Lulu Wang set out to produce Expats, a miniseries adaptation of the novel The Expatriates, for Prime Video, they were committed to building both an acting ensemble and a writers room that would bolster the female-driven vision behind the project.
Speaking via satellite from Nashville, Kidman joined Wang and castmates Sarayu Blue and Ji-young Yoo at Deadline’s Contenders Television and revealed that she was immediately struck by the novel’s focus on its female characters and shined light on subjects that a diverse array of women face but receive little public discourse or attention.
“The themes of the show and the way in which it’s women, complicated women, but it’s very diverse and it’s very interesting and it’s very interconnected and the way we’re all interconnected. And I loved that it was a global show and that it was very,...

The results are in on the 2024 Razzie Awards, and it was a very big (but not necessarily great) night for one movie and one actress this year.
The annual awards show, which took place one day before the 2024 Oscars on Saturday (March 9), hands out awards to performers and movies that have been deemed the “worst.”
Going into the ceremony, Expend4bles led the pack of nominees with 7 nods in categories such as Worst Picture and Worst Prequel, Remake, Rip-Off of Sequel.
However, when it came time for the awards to be handed out, another movie swept the field, picking up five Razzies. One actress also won big, being named Worst Actress and Worst Supporting Actress.
However, one Hollywood icon received redemption this year!

Slasher film Winnie-the-Pooh: Blood and Honey swept the five categories it was nominated in for at the 44th annual Razzies, which “honor” the worst of filmmaking. The awards were announced today.
‘Winnie the Pooh’ won the Razzie in the picture, director, screenplay, screen couple and remake/rip-off/sequel categories. The film, based on the beloved children’s literary character, follows Pooh and Piglet, who have become feral and bloodthirsty murderers. They terrorize a group of young university women and the returning Christopher Robin.
The Razzie Redeemer Award, bestowed on a past contender who has “gone on to better things” since being nominated for a Razzie, went to “The Nanny” actor and SAG-AFTRA President Fran Drescher for her leadership during the 2023 actor strike.
Drescher was nominated in 1998 for worst actress in the romantic comedy film The Beautician and the Beast.

At the end of The GentlemenSeason 1, Eddie Horniman (Theo James) gives his literal partner in crime, Susie Glass (Kaya Scodelario), a closer look at his signet ring. It has his family motto on it. “Non sine periculo,” he reads. “Not without danger.” Those words could easily apply to Episode 8, which is filled with blood, backstabbing, andfront-stabbing.
In the first half of the episode, Susie’s father, underworld crime boss Bobby Glass (Ray Winstone), informs his daughter and Eddie that he’s selling the weed business. All they have to do is share the news with the proper interested parties — conniving American billionaire Uncle Stanley Johnston (Giancarlo Esposito), smug scammer Sticky Pete (Joshua McGuire), and volatile drug baroness Mercy (Martha Millan) — and obtain their offers. All bids must be over £150 million and arrive by the end of the week via pigeon.

The number of feature films receiving tax credits to shoot in California are on the rise, with some productions spending big bucks to nab major incentives along the way.
Led by The Mandalorian & Grogu, five studio projects were selected to participate in California’s Film and TV tax credit program, the state’s film office announced on Monday. The Lucasfilm title will get $21.8 million in tax credits, becoming just the fifth movie in the history of the program to get at least $20 million. Three of those films were selected in the past two years and were chosen in consecutive quarters.
Disney was the biggest beneficiary in this round of incentives, with titles from the entertainment giant conditionally receiving $28.1 million to shoot in the state. Amazon Studios will also get $14.4 million for a pair of projects, including the Ben Affleck-led The Accountant 2. Absent from the list was Netflix and Warner Bros.,...

Mercy is one of the female characters in Lulu Wang’s Expats that represents the current generation of young women, who are as clueless about their work and personal lives as Mercy is the youngest of the three women and one of the leads of the show. Her life was a canvas at that juncture, which she could paint the way she wanted. Mercy sadly had not found her calling yet, which is why she was living in Hong Kong doing meager jobs while she held a degree from an Ivy League American university.
Mercy was a Korean American woman who had spent most of her life in America, and she remained clueless about her roots and culture. Mercy had a lot of issues while growing up, and just like Hillary, her relationship with her mother was not very ideal. Lulu Wang’s Expats throws light on the people living in Hong Kong and the kind of culture shock they face upon meeting the locals. Margaret and Clarke, who had been living in Hong Kong for a while, are dealing with a certain tragedy that rocked their world. Margaret and her husband Clarke are rich and live in a posh apartment complex surrounded by people of good financial standing as neighbors who belong to different parts of the world. Unlike others, Margaret and Clarke chose not to deal with the pain the right way. The couple had lost their toddler son, Gus, in a crowded market, and the person responsible for it was...

In the series finale of Prime Video’s Expats, Margaret, Hilary and Mercy finally came to terms with the weight of their individual traumas, and the complicated and sometimes brutal roles they played in each others’ lives.
When the three women met face to face, Margaret announced that her family was moving back to the States in order to help her other two children move on. And while Hilary reflected on healing from her father’s death and his abuse against her mother throughout her childhood, Mercy timidly faced motherhood, as she continued to struggle with her own grief stemming...

If you want to tell a story about expats in Hong Kong or anywhere else, one of the problems you’ll run into is that they necessarily have enough wealth to insulate their lives from a lot of the forces that loom over the locals — like politics and time. The three protagonists of “Expats” are all varying degrees of privileged and enmeshed in varying levels of grief that make them, as we all are, both victims of and perpetrators to the people around them. Director Lulu Wang, though, finds a wonderful cinematic answer to the question of how to connect the Prime Video series’ expatriates to the world around them, even if they can’t quite see it.

Expats episode 5 was the longest in the show and intricately covered the lives of the maids who worked with Hillary and Margaret. Mercy and Charly had a good time with each other. She revealed to Charly the incident regarding Gus. David revealed Mercy’s pregnancy to Hillary, and she was livid about it. Alan, the priest whom Clarke frequented, visited him to discuss his state of mind. Margaret, after having a tense standoff with her children, finally decided to move to America and asked Essie if she could join them as well.

[This story contains spoilers through the fifth episode of Expats, “Central.”]
A show called Expats understandably focuses on the cosmopolitan lives of those privileged enough to make their fortunes abroad, and for most of the Amazon limited series’ six episodes, it does just that, following neighbors Margaret (Nicole Kidman) and Hilary (Sarayu Blue). The two wealthy women live in Hong Kong’s tony Victoria Peak neighborhood, as well as Mercy (Ji-young Yoo), the American drifter who complicates both of their lives. To recap: Mercy was tasked with watching Margaret’s two sons during a night market outing when the younger one disappeared. A year later, Gus is still missing, and Mercy is having an affair with Hilary’s husband, David (Jack Huston).
But the fifth episode drifts away from the trio of protagonists to focus on characters that have heretofore existed in the background, sometimes literally. “Central” (each episode of Expats is named after a geographically significant area in...

Hillary felt content after the conversation with her mother. Clarke and Margaret were relieved to know the body didn’t belong to Gus. Spoiler Alert: This interview contains spoilers for “Central,” the fifth episode of “Expats,” now streaming on Prime Video.
Lulu Wang’s “Expats” steps into feature-length territory for this week’s episode, which focuses on the working class women by diving into the lives of the helpers, Essie (Ruby Ruiz) and Puri (Amelyn Pardenilla). The story steps away from the wealthy world of Margaret (Nicole Kidman) and Hillary (Sarayu Blue), instead following Essie and Puri on their day off, unwinding from their hectic work week.
Poor Essie has spent much of the series fraught with guilt over the disappeareance of Margaret’s son, Gus, blaming herself for not being there the night the young boy vanished at the night market. The second episode of Allegiance was a disappointment compared to the first. It tackled the troubling issue of drug overdose and accidental deaths caused by poisonous drug abuse. This portrayal was concerning as it implied a gray area where hard drugs could be seen as acceptable. This is far from the truth. Drug abuse should always be treated seriously by law enforcement to prevent a recurrence. Additionally, the episode hinted at Ajeet Sohal possibly falling victim to a trap set by individuals affiliated with the Ioh group. This narrative thread adds intrigue to the storyline and suggests deeper layers to the characters’ motivations. As the first season unfolds, viewers are left to ponder the consequences of drug abuse and the potential dangers lurking within Ajeet Sohal’s social circle. The series has the opportunity to shed light on important societal issues while delivering engaging storytelling. However, it must tread carefully...

Part of what makes “Expats” so potent is that it focuses on three women in Hong Kong grappling with momentous life changes in 2014 when the city was doing the same. But the Hong Kong of today — even the Hong Kong of 2020, when the Prime Video series began shooting — is markedly different from the Hong Kong of 2014 when the story is set.
Episode 5, “Central,” explicitly digs into the scale of these changes, as instead of following the show’s main expats, it focuses on local characters of all economic strata caught up in a particularly bad storm at the beginning of the Umbrella Movement protests, from a young activist on the frontlines (Will Orr) to his worried-sick mother (Maggie Lee) to a migrant worker (Amelyn Pardenilla) with big dreams. While the pandemic shifted some of the show’s production from Hong Kong to L.A., production designer Yong Ok Lee knew...

Media adaptations of beloved video game franchises have turned out to be the next big thing, as proven by the success of the Sonic movies, HBO’s The Last of Us series, Netflix’s Arcane, and so on and so forth. Partly due to the producers finally acknowledging the potential of video game narratives, and mostly due to assistance from creators who are passionate about the source material, fans have been catered to with faithful retellings of their favorite video game storylines. Unfortunately, fans of the iconic interplanetary sci-fi game series Halo cannot claim to have enjoyed the first season of Paramount+’s small-screen adaptation of the game series, which, in an effort to carve out its own place, became a far cry from the original saga.

Episode one of Expats, the brand-new show on Amazon Prime, is about Margaret trying to get over a tragedy in the city of Hong Kong. Amidst the chaotic times Margaret and her family are going through, she was throwing a 50th birthday party for her husband, Clarke. The party was a disaster, as Margaret had a meltdown over spotting Mercy waitressing at it. Margaret and Hillary, who had not been on good terms since the incident, were back to being friends for a brief period but went back to their lives. The show was like Anurag Kashyap’s film Ugly, but Expats so far is more emotional than dark.

Expats, the brand-new Amazon Prime Show created by Lulu Wang, chronicles the story of expatriates living in the megacity of Hong Kong. The show specifically covers the story of rich expats who live a luxurious life and are surrounded by people who are as wealthy as they are. The hustle and bustle of the city is portrayed in a rather claustrophobic way, but it depicts the noise and loneliness aptly. The show is the story of Margaret, a housewife living with her two kids and her husband Clarke in the city. A tragedy occurred that changed the trajectory of her life. The show has the elements of melancholy found in Sofia Coppola’s Lost in Translation, and the first two episodes have a rather sober approach to her life after ‘the incident.’

Sitting at the center of Expats is a mystery of the sort that’s fueled countless crime dramas, and countless more true-crime series. On an otherwise unremarkable evening in Hong Kong, a little boy, Gus (Connor J. Gillman), goes missing on a night out with his family. The questions raised by this incident are obvious and urgent: What happened to him? Who did it? Where is he now?
But answers, in Amazon Prime Video’s Expats, are much harder to come by. Indeed, the questions the series is really invested in are the ones that arise when it becomes apparent that satisfying answers never might be obtained, of how to exist alongside such uncertainty and unfairness and unthinkable pain. Its six hour-ish episodes follow this line of thought through explorations of sexism and classism, home and family, and with so many big themes bouncing around, some are inevitably served better than others.

Compared to the more rigid constraints imposed by a traditional TV network series or feature film, streaming provides as little or as much space as necessary to tell a story. But time and time again, this greater freedom results in a lack of concision, a tendency to get lost in the weeds. The latest example is Lulu Wang’s limited series Expats, which attempts to tell a story that might have worked just fine if it weren’t spread across six episodes.
Expats is adapted from Janice Y.K. Lee’s novel The Expatriates, which traces the lives of three American women living in Hong Kong in 2014. The expat community is represented here by Margaret Woo (Nicole Kidman) and Hilary Starr (Sarayu Blue), who live in a luxury apartment building with their husbands and, in Margaret’s case, children. They have live-in “helpers,” and they attend lavish parties even in the midst of tragedy.

If life is a series of choices, then one persistent question often carries outsized weight: Do I stay, or do I go? Staying means surrounding yourself with family, friends, and familiarity. Going necessitates discovery, be it new places, people, or customs. There are always extremes and exceptions, of course, but the beauty of Lulu Wang’s rich new series, “Expats,” is that it relishes the personal twist on each answer — the unique specificity of life that contends with its universal demands. Maybe staying means choosing one person over another. Maybe going isn’t a choice at all. What remains, as a constant, is the tug of the unknown, the path not chosen, the future that could’ve been — or could still be.
All three protagonists in “Expats” chose, at one point or another, to go. Margaret (Nicole Kidman), Hilary (Sarayu Blue), and Mercy (Ji-young Yoo) are all Americans living in China.

Expend4bles tops the not-so-coveted list of Razzie Award nominations this year, with seven chances to take home a dubious honor.
Tying for a close second were The Exorcist: Believer and Winnie the Pooh: Blood and Honey, each receiving five noms.
“After strikes, lingerings of a worldwide plague and a general sense of universal agoraphobia, the decline of the cinematic experience goes without saying,” Razzie organizers said in announcing today’s nominations. “Thankfully, a doll pic and a bomb movie jump-started The Industry, which still left a trail of Pooh behind for the Razzies to pick up!”
This year’s acting contenders feature former Oscar winners Jon Voight, Russell Crowe and Dame Helen Mirren, as well as Razzie Repeat Offenders Sylvester Stallone, Megan Fox and Jennifer Lopez.
Results were determined by the votes of Razzie Members. Five top contenders were chosen in each of nine categories. The 44th annual Razzie “Winners” (for whom there will literally be no red carpet) will be unveiled on the now traditional “Oscar Eve,” Saturday, March 9.
