“It’s a world of laughter, a world of tears
It’s a world of hopes and a world of fears
There’s so much that we share
That it’s time we’re aware
It’s a Small World after all.”
These were wise words back in 1964, and are more poignant today than ever.
Sixty years ago, Walt Disney and his talented team of storytellers, artists, designers, and Imagineers made a huge splash on the world stage, contributing four magnificent attractions to the 1964 World’s Fair in New York. Part research and development project, part proving ground, and 100% inspired brilliance – Disney’s accomplishments at the World’s Fair raised the bar for themed entertainment around the globe.

It’s no secret that sequel films typically send people running to movie theater seats. They’re a safe bet for a studio like Walt Disney — if audiences loved an original film, they’re sure to enjoy a new adventure with the same charismatic characters and the addition of some new ones (preferably one that can be turned into profitable theme park plushies). For better or worse, Disney has boarded the sequel train and doesn’t seem to be hopping off anytime soon. For the next solid three years, the studio has multiple sequel projects slated to drop — ranging anywhere between the second and fifth film of a franchise. While it can be nice to revisit fan-favorite universes like ‘Avatar’ and ‘Toy Story,’ there’s also a major demand for Disney to return to their original storytelling roots. Walt Disney himself was incredibly opposed to sequels, saying he always had...

Steven Spielberg can’t stop thinking about Timothée Chalamet atop a sandworm in Denis Villeneuve’s “Dune: Part Two.”
The director praised Villeneuve during an installment of the DGA’s “Director’s Cut” podcast, where Spielberg welcomed Villeneuve to the club of filmmakers who are the “builders of worlds” onscreen.
“It’s an honor for me to sit here and talk to you. Let me start by saying there are filmmakers who are the builders of worlds. It’s not a long list and we know who a lot of them are,” Spielberg said. “Starting with [Georges] Méliès and Disney and Kubrick, George Lucas. Ray Harryhausen, I include in that list. If the $579 million at the box office and 93% Rotten Tomatoes score weren’t enough, Quebecois director Denis Villeneuve got one of the greatest boosts one can receive in his field. None other than Steven Spielberg, who knows a thing or two about science fiction, interviewed the “Dune: Part Two” director for the DGA’s “Director’s Cut” podcast, and told him “you have made one of the most brilliant science fiction films I’ve ever seen.”
The creator of “Close Encounters of the Third Kind” and “E.T. Denis Villeneuve’s Dune: Part Two debuted in theaters earlier this month, receiving praise from critics and movie-goers alike. Now, joining the ranks of its fans, is none other than Steven Spielberg, who called the movie “one of the most brilliant science-fiction films [he’s] ever seen.”
The comments came in a conversation between Spielberg and Villeneuve at the DGA theater in Los Angeles, which has since been published as an episode of The Directors Guild of America’s podcast, The Director’s Cut. Speaking about the sequel — which follows-up 2021’s Dune — Spileberg commended Villeneuve’s eye for world-building.

A special district board selected by Gov. Ron DeSantis that oversees The Walt Disney Co.’s Florida theme park properties settled its litigation with the company today.
This deal in the long and bitter battle between the Mouse House and the failed GOP presidential contender comes just days before an hotly contested shareholder vote for Disney and CEO Bob Iger. The legal actions between Disney and DeSantis over the past year and a half had become quite personal, with Iger at one point chastising the Sunshine State governor for being anti-business.
That seems to all be in the rear-view mirror now.

Bend It Like Beckham director Gurinder Chadha has a new, contemporary adaptation of Charles Dickens’ A Christmas Carol in the works.
With films including Bhaji On The Beach, Bend It Like Beckham and Blinded By The Light, Gurinder Chadha has long since established herself as a filmmaker capable of tackling contemporary subjects with a lightness of touch and broad appeal.
It’s a style that’s set to continue with her film for Disney – more on that in a sec – and another project we hadn’t previously learned about: a modern adaptation of Charles Dickens’ A Christmas Carol.
As reported by Variety, the film came to light when Chadha was in the UK’s House of Commons and talking about the state of the British film industry. There, she revealed that her Christmas Carol would have a British Indian protagonist. Her “Scrooge is an Indian Tory who hates refugees,” she said.

Five years ago, while chief creative officer of Walt Disney Animation Studios Jennifer Lee was finishing work on “Frozen II,” she mentioned to her co-director, Chris Buck, that the studio’s 100th anniversary was coming up — and asked whether he’d want to be involved in any projects pegged to the anniversary?
They didn’t have any idea what that animated feature would be but they knew that “we wanted original characters, story and music,” says Buck.
They began gathering stills from every animated feature the studio had done and pinned them to a bulletin board.
They looked at the breadth of colors and styles. From “Pinocchio’s” Jiminy Cricket to “The Princess and the Frog’s” Tiana to Judy Hopps in “Zootopia,” one thing was apparent — that these and many other characters had all made wishes on stars.
“It feels very obvious. Of course, these characters are wishing on the stars.

In the latest from Disney Animation, Wish, we witness history. The film tells the story of a girl who wishes on a star and opens up a heap of trouble for the villainous ruler Magnifico. While the reviews have been mixed, I immensely enjoyed the story, the music, and the heart of this magical animated tale. Perhaps I needed some magic in my life, but this one was a treat. Directed by Chris Buck and Fawn Veersaunthorn and starring Chris Pine, Ariana DeBose, Alan Tudyk, and Victor Garber, Wish put a smile on my face, and it was a terrific way to escape into a flick.
I attended the film’s premiere the same night the SAG strike reached an agreement. Initially, I planned on participating in the interviews without the cast (due to the strike). Happily, with that news, we had a couple of new interviews to cover, including Chris Pine and Ariana DeBose.

It's been 100 years since Walt Disney created The Walt Disney Company, which first produced short silent films like "Alice's Funnies." That film starred Walt Disney himself, in live-action, showing a little girl how he created his cartoons. The strange and anthropomorphic creations came alive on the screen in front of her in that ambitious early short, and after a day of behind-the-scenes magic, she dreamed herself into the cartoon world.
The events of the next century are much too voluminous to write them all down here but needless to say, Walt Disney's company underwent many changes. Original characters like Mickey Mouse, Donald Duck and Goofy helped make the studio an industry titan, and feature films like "Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs" and "Cinderella" cemented its box office clout. Disney's theme parks literally changed landscapes. And by the time the 100th anniversary of those original cartoons came around,...

Ending the year in signs is the hilarious, adventurous, sharp-tongued era of Sagittarius.
There’s truly nothing like them. They are quirky, mysterious and full of life. While they naturally grab the attention in the room, they feel most comfortable when they’re in their lonesome.

If there's a constant, all-encompassing rule to the universe, it's that absolutely nothing is built to last. If all matter is doomed to the inescapable fate of entropy, and every living thing eventually dies, then what hope do such lovely intangibles as love, desire, and dreams have?
Well, to quote that ersatz Disney prince, Vision, "a thing isn't beautiful because it lasts." Love, dreams, and wishes are beautiful almost because of the fact that they can't always come true; it's the hope, the having of these wishes, that makes life worth living more than merely the attainment of them. Walt Disney and the studio that still bears his name have been a proponent of this principle for Disney (the man's) entire life and Disney (the studio's) existence to date. And now that the studio has reached the milestone of sticking around for 100 years, it's only natural that they'd wish to...

October 16, 2023 marks the official 100th anniversary of The Walt Disney Company. While many enterprises now make up the conglomerate — from theme parks to sports broadcasting — animation has been at its core since the beginning.
The legacy of Walt Disney Animation Studios continues strongly today. 2023 also sees the theatrical debut of "Wish" — the studio's first original fairytale — from the co-director of "Frozen" and starring Ariana DeBose as Asha, the story's protagonist. "Wish" is accompanied in theaters by a new short film, "Once Upon a Studio," starring Mickey Mouse and featuring characters from every feature-length film in the Disney Animation canon.
Even for a studio with such a rich, beloved filmography as Disney's, the past 100 years have been an ebb and flow of highs and lows, hits and bombs, artistic phenomena and creative scarcity. With each generation, Disney Animation must redefine itself for its audience while retaining the signatures that make it iconic.

It's been two years since "Free Guy" became a theatrical hit for Disney at a time when the industry was very much struggling to get back on its feet in the aftermath of the pandemic. But director Shawn Levy's take on a fictional video game that becomes too real for the characters within it, with Ryan Reynolds starring as the titular Guy, did well enough for itself that the studio quickly began looking at a sequel.
"Free Guy 2" was first mentioned as a real possibility more than two years ago after the first film grossed $331 million worldwide under less-than-ideal conditions. So, is the sequel still happening? If so, why has it taken so long to get it going? And what does any of this have to do with "Barbie?" We're here to answer all of those questions and get to the bottom of it armed with all of the...

Disney’s upcoming live-action adaptation of “Snow White” gained another detractor, but the critic is a little closer to home this time.
The son of the original director of the 1937 animated classic, David Hand – his father goes by the same name – claims Walt Disney himself would be furious with the film’s “woke” direction in a new interview with The Telegraph.
Online criticism heightened last month when on-set photos of the live-action remake depicted the removal of the original story’s seven dwarves to be more inclusive and less stereotypical.

“Snow White” has been plagued with backlash from the beginning. First, star Rachel Zegler’s casting was criticized due to Zegler being of Latina descent. Peter Dinklage, meanwhile, called the live-action remake a “fucking backwards story” that he said was offensive to the dwarfism community. Disney later responded that the film would not be “reinforcing stereotypes” over differently abled people.
Now, the son of the director of the original 1937 animated film is saying that Walt Disney himself would disapprove of the new “woke” direction of the feature. David Hand, whose late father of the same name was the original film’s director, worked for Disney as a designer in the 1990s.

Ron DeSantis’s attorneys say that The Walt Disney Co. lacks standing to sue him in the company’s federal lawsuit over the Florida governor’s moves to strip the company of control of a special district that covers its Orlando theme parks.
DeSantis’s legal team also contends that the governor has sovereign and legislative immunity from the litigation, in which the company claims that its First Amendment and other constitutional rights were violated by the governor’s actions. Disney claims that the DeSantis-led effort to install his own appointees to the special district was in retaliation for the company’s opposition last year to a parental rights law, which detractors call the “don’t say gay” bill.

Ron DeSantis has been having a hard time out on the campaign trail lately convincing Republican voters that he should be their presidential nominee, and the Walt Disney Company isn’t about to make things any easier for the Florida governor.
As dictated by federal court schedules, the Bob Iger-run media conglomerate filed its response today to DeSantis’ June 26 motion to toss out the Mouse House’s retaliation and free speech suit against the ambitious so-called anti-woke politician.
And Disney didn’t mince words.

Tom Hanks portrayed iconic artist Walt Disney in the 2013 movie Saving Mr. Banks. But his initial instinct was to walk away from the project before a conversation with Disney head Bob Iger.
Why Tom Hanks initially didn’t want to play Walt Disney in ‘Saving Mr. Banks’ Tom Hanks | Cindy Ord/WireImage
Hanks has built an impressive resume of biopics in his career, from Philadelphia to A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood. Although he was well aware of this reputation, when he was approached to play Walt Disney himself, he refused. Being Walt Disney would’ve been too much even for Hanks.
“The burden, you know. Honestly, the responsibility. I heard about it first from Tony. I think he’s head of physical production at Disney. But he and I executive produced and worked and created From The Earth to the Moon, Band of Brothers, The Pacific. We had done a lot of stuff.

Striking writers now have a new punching bag: Bob Iger.
After telling CNBC’s David Faber Thursday that the labor situation is “very disturbing” and how the Hollywood unions aren’t being realistic about the current financial climate, WGA picketers went postal on social media by pointing out the massive pay disparity between the Disney CEO and most working writers today.
In a lengthy sit-down with CNBC from Sun Valley, Idaho, Iger addressed the SAG-AFTRA and WGA strikes and his ongoing feud with Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis. Though his digs at DeSantis were lauded — he called the governor’s claims that Disney is sexualizing children “preposterous and inaccurate”— he lost the Tinseltown rank and file when he said “this is the worst time in the world” to walk off the job.
“I understand any labor organization’s desire to work on behalf of its members to get the most compensation...

New Delhi, June 29 (Ians) Finding it hard to sustain in the digital era, the 135-year old Walt Disney-owned National Geographic magazine has laid off the last 19 staff writers, the media reported.
The staffers were notified in April of their terminations. The layoffs are the second over the past nine months, and the fourth since a series of ownership changes began in 2015, the Washington Post reported. As part of the cost-cutting measures, the company had removed six top editors in September last year.
The latest cuts also eliminated the magazine’s small audio department, the report said.
“My new National Geographic just arrived, which includes my latest feature — my 16th, and my last as a senior writer,” Craig Welch, senior writer at NatGeo, wrote on Twitter.
“NatGeo is laying off all of its staff writers. I’ve been so lucky. I got to work w/incredible journalists and tell important,...

John Stamos was a big Disney fan. But he felt there was something wrong with that – until he met Ryan Gosling at a dinner party.
Stamos talked about the moment on Keke Palmer’s Baby, This Is Keke Palmer podcast. The host is herself a big Disney fan, so she felt his vibe.
The actor confessed that his Disney doubts stemmed from career concerns.
“Who’s going to take me seriously with the Mickey Mouse stuff? I’ve got to distance myself from it.”
Enter Ryan Gosling. When they met at a group dinner, Gosling immediately brought up their mutual passion.
“He was like, ‘Oh, you’re a Disney fan, right?'” Stamos remembered. “I say, yeah. He goes, ‘I’m obsessed. I’m a Disney adult, I go there by myself and I wear headphones. I go on rides. I have a mixtape.'”
A light went on for Stamos.

Director Rob Marshall knew from the outset that the hardest part of his live-action reimagining of Disney’s “The Little Mermaid” would be pulling off the Oscar-winning “Under the Sea” Caribbean musical number. It wasn’t just the tricky translation from 2D to CG with hundreds of singing photoreal fish in the underwater environment (courtesy of Framestore’s expert animation) but also the complicated dance choreography set to the toe-tapping song by Alan Menken and the late Howard Ashman (to whom the film is dedicated).
And they killed it: The joyous musical number is the animated highlight of the film, which deservedly got the loudest applause at early screenings.
Performed by Sebastian the crab (voiced by Daveed Diggs), the song is a plea for young mermaid Ariel (Halle Bailey) to forget about joining Prince Eric (Jonah Hauer-King) in the human world and stay sea-bound where she belongs. Considering the beauty,...

When “The Little Mermaid” filmmaker Rob Marshall thinks about his remake of the beloved 1989 Disney animated original, he’s clear: It is its own thing.
“It’s so funny how people hold onto things,” Marshall said in a recent interview with IndieWire. “They don’t realize that this is a different genre. You have to make it work as a live-action [film] as if there were never an animated film. It’s your chance to do things that work for the story. It’s all about story. It’s like taking a beautiful opera, a beautiful play, and doing it again. You look at it through a new lens. It’s not 1989, it’s 2023, so what can we bring to it and still hold on to the most important things that really still work, but then kind of reimagine it?”
