Today came the sad news that Smash Mouth frontman Steve Harwell died at 56. Smash Mouth is undoubtedly best known today for the fact their 1999 hit song "All Star" played at the very beginning of the first "Shrek" movie. Like with everything else related to "Shrek," the song has become a bit of a meme.
It's easy to forget, however, that before "Shrek" debuted at Cannes and went on to win the very first Academy Award for Best Animated Feature, "All Star" was a smash hit way before Shrek. It was considered one of the best songs of 1999 and even got nominated for the Best Pop Performance By A Duo Or Group With Vocal Grammy. While "Shrek" immortalized it, it was actually another film from 2001 that gave us the best use of "All Star," and one of the best endings to a movie of the last 20 years.

In a locker room converted into a makeshift dressing room in North Augusta, South Carolina, the members of Hootie and the Blowfish are gathered in front of a TV, watching Tiger Woods tee off. It’s the beginning of Woods’ Masters comeback, and the band is invested — it played his wedding in 2004, and Woods and frontman Darius Rucker remain friends. The bandmates, golfers themselves, whoop and shout whenever Woods rolls in another birdie. Later, Rucker makes a connection between Woods’ career and the band’s. “It’s funny, the parallels in our lives and careers,...

The Big Bang Theory ended with a sweet scene over, what else, Chinese food. The last scene of the series featured Bernadette (Melissa Rauch), Howard (Simon Helberg), Leonard (Johnny Galecki), Penny (Kaley Cuoco), Sheldon (Jim Parsons), Amy (Mayim Bialik) and Raj (Kunal Nayyar) all assembled over takeout, talking and laughing, like they always did. As they shared laughs and food, an acoustic version of the theme song, "History of Everything," played. See it below. Series co-creator Chuck Lorre had the song on his mind for 12 years. "Twelve years ago, [Barenaked Ladies lead singer] Ed Robertson sent a demo of that theme song — just him and an acoustic guitar. I thought it was great and I said,...

Spoiler Alert: This story contains details of The Big Bang Theory series finale that aired tonight.
In the end, The Big Bang Theory took the prize with a series finale that delivered satisfying surprises for all of the core characters but kept hold of the show’s taut pace, tart zingers, and deadpan irony despite all the obvious temptations to over-inflate the comedy vehicle beyond its specifications. The 279th and final episode of the history-making CBS hit comedy, which finished its 12-year mission with a picture-perfect landing that was capped, fittingly, by an award acceptance speech by Jim Parsons.
The trophy this time was the Nobel Prize medal and technically the winner was actually Parson’s on-air alter ego, Sheldon Cooper. The Southern-born brainiac and Caltech physicist has been the show’s signature character...

In an immediately classic opening montage, Elliot embraces his new job at Evil Corp, doing his best to blend into the corporate scene… while still using his hacker superpowers to try to prevent Stage 2 and along the way dish out his own brand of justice against the corruption within the company. But being normal isn’t easy for anyone, especially as he becomes aware that Mr. Robot isn’t gone — he’s just losing control of the moments when that aspect of himself arises.
Whiterose continues to lurk in the shadows, planning for Stage 2 — which will now coincide with a United Nations vote on annexing the Congo, though Phillip Price has his own political conditions. ‘The Devil’s Candy’ Blasts Genre Thrills and the Devil’s Music Into Your Heathen SoulThe director of ‘The Loved Ones’ returns with another intense and suspenseful thriller.
Writer/director Sean Byrne’s debut feature, The Loved Ones, blew festival audiences (including us) away back in 2009 with thrills and suspense born from seeing a character we truly cared about fighting for his life against increasingly twisted and violent odds. It took three years before it actually opened in the Us, but it was worth the wait. Now Byrne’s equally intense follow-up film is finally being released… after premiering at film fests nearly two years ago.
Once again though, The Devil’s Candy is a blistering, intimate, heavy metal-tinged horror/thriller worth waiting for as it drops a loving family into a devilish nightmare where each violent chord brings them closer to a grim and grisly fate.

The Martian Chronicles was an uneven episode of Supergirl, but when there are this many cool aliens, why complain?
This review contains spoilers.

2.11 The Martian Chronicles
The Martian Chronicles was kind of an uneven episode, but as with virtually every episode of every CW superhero show of the 2016-2017 season, it's tough to really come down too hard on it. I've been having this ongoing mental contest where I try and figure out which of these shows is the "most improved" from last year. The vast majority of the first half of this Supergirl season was astoundingly good. The Flash has rebounded in a tremendous way from the missteps of last year. I haven't enjoyed Arrow this much since the first half of season three. Legends Of Tomorrow threw its old formula out the window and is a better show for it.

This episode of Supergirl finds the heroine coming face-to-face with the White Martian threat in a version of the show that departs from the typical format presented so far this year. In fact, it is much more like what was shown in season one, where it focuses primarily on Supergirl, Martian Manhunter, and the primary threat. There was no Guardian, powered-up Mon-El, or Kryptonite-suited Alex Danvers present for the entire show.
We get started in the "alien bar" that many have come to despise, and right away it seemed as if it was going to be another sappy episode focusing on things like "feelings," "relationships," and the Barenaked Ladies, as Kara is broken hearted that her sister is ignoring her on her "Earth Birthday." Additionally, Mon-El has accepted her rejection to his advances only for Kara to realize she has feelings for him, and Miss Martian gets emotional with Martian Manhunter.

Ryan Adams is releasing a new album this fall, and it isn’t going to have any Taylor Swift covers on it this time. In fact, according to Adams, it’s actually influenced by AC/DC, Bruce Springsteen, and Nick Hornsby – so, kind of the complete opposite.
Adams released his widely successful and critically acclaimed cover album of Swift’s 1989 in September of last year. This new record of original material will be the songwriter’s 16th studio album in total, and his first since his Grammy Award-nominated self-titled record in 2014. Continuing the celebration of Beverly Hills, 90210‘s thirtieth anniversary this month, here are the final 13 iconic moments, covering the show’s later years, in which its most notable events involve the departures of major characters as the show transforms into a more traditional primetime soap opera.
13. Valerie arrives in Beverly Hills: Season 5, Episode 1, “What I Did On My Summer Vacation and Other Stories”
With the onset of the fifth season of Beverly Hills, 90210, the producers of the show found themselves needing to fill the void left behind by Shannon Doherty’s departure. To do so, they tapped Tiffani Amber-Thiessen, fresh off her iconic role as Kelly Kapowski on Saved by the Bell (the kind of squeaky-clean, brightly-colored, no-consequences teen show that 90210, in its early existence, was actively working in contrast against) to play Valerie Malone, an old friend of the Walshes transplanted from Buffalo, NY to Beverly Hills. Fresh off its latest Rtx convention, Rooster Teeth has served as the distributor for a new music video. The online video network best known for Red Vs. Blue has teamed up with the Barenaked Ladies to bring viewers the official video for the song "Did I Say That Out Loud?" A number of Rooster Teeth employees appear in the music video. Most notably, Achievement Hunter and Slow Mo Guys host Gavin Free portrays a video chat user who accidentally lights his crotch on fire and becomes a viral video sensation. Meg Turney, who is both Free's real-life girlfriend and a recent addition to the Rooster Teeth team, plays opposite Free as his character's exasperated girlfriend. This is the second time Rooster Teeth has lent both its talent and its channel to a Barenaked Ladies video. Last year, it distributed the alt-rock group's official video for "Odds Are".

In a way that gives the show its hip geeky edge, the dialogue of “Veronica Mars” is constructed around sporadic mad-libs, which includes name-drops to the Barenaked Ladies, “Sharknado”, Clint Eastwood, and the term “asshat”. In an admirable feat, the portion in which characters spout these phrases is fitting - while the “Veronica Mars” may not be all that funny, it doesn’t come as desperate for relevancy. Instead, it positions itself well-within a realistic pop culture stratosphere where movies, music, and celebrities are intertwined.

The past few weeks, I’ve fallen accidentally in love with a show 14 years too late. The Judd Apatow produced Wonder Years of my generation (or technically… the generation above mine) has finally caught the apple of my eye and has me a bit nostalgic.
It’s hard to figure out how we end up in the cliques we do. Sometimes it’s proximity. Sometimes it’s commonality. In my case? Perhaps a bit of both. My first best friend, to best of my knowledge, became such because he sat across from me in Kindergarten. From then until fourth grade, he and I played together often both during school, and after. As we grew up, we were picked on. He, perhaps for his glasses, for being tall, and for being incredibly smart. Me? Thanks to a mother well-versed in podiatry, I was stricken with wearing proper orthopedic saddle shoes. Long...

Our world is introduced/re-introduced to the universe of “Veronica Mars” with a slideshow and voiceover, which could be the opening credits for the original TV show for all I know. After the catchup we find our title hero (played with lightness by Kristen Bell) interviewing for a job at a law firm, where her potential boss Gayle Buckley (Jamie Lee Curtis) helps fill in more background with obvious exposition. We learn not long after that Veronica has a boyfriend (Chris Lowell) as well, who has become a good-humored support despite her history that everyone seems to know about.

Marine park SeaWorld is lashing out yet again at one of this year's most popular documentaries. The Oscar-shortlisted "Blackfish," the film from director Gabriela Cowperthwaite that debuted at this year's Sundance Film Festival, has provoked a strong response since its theatrical release and widely watched CNN broadcast. As many musical acts (Barenaked Ladies, Willie Nelson, Martina McBride, Heart) have canceled their shows at SeaWorld and various online petitions have sprung up asking for the parks to release their orcas, SeaWorld is feeling the heat. Earlier this year, Indiewire was the first to release the "Blackfish" team's responses to SeaWorld's initial eight defenses of the story the film depicted, which were disseminated to the press by a PR firm the company hired. Read More: SeaWorld Unleashes 8 Assertions About 'Blackfish' and Filmmakers Respond This morning, in newspapers from the New York Times, USA Today, and the Orlando Sentinel, SeaWorld bought.

Willie Nelson is just one of the artists rushing to cancel gigs at SeaWorld after seeing Blackfish, the documentary about killer whales who have attacked their trainers.
Heart are an unlikely bunch of revolutionaries. But the American soft rockers' decision to cancel a concert at SeaWorld in Florida may mark a turning point in the relationship between humans and one of the most magnificent mammals of the ocean. The band this week joined Willie Nelson and Barenaked Ladies in cancelling shows at the Orlando theme park because they had watched Blackfish, a film about Tilikum, a five-tonne male orca that has been involved in the deaths of three people. This modest yet riveting documentary has made ever-bigger ripples across the pond since its premiere at Sundance earlier this year, with an audience of 20 million recently watching it on CNN. It is now on the Oscar longlist.

This week, Heart became the third act to cancel their show at SeaWorld after seeing Blackfish — a documentary that targets the water park for its mistreatment of killer whales. Heart's announcement follows similar cancellations from SeaWorld-scheduled acts Willie Nelson ("I don't agree with the way they treat their animals," he said to CNN's Brooke Baldwin) and Barenaked Ladies ("This is a complicated issue, and we don't claim to understand all of it, but we don't feel comfortable proceeding with the gig at this time," they wrote on their Facebook page). In response, SeaWorld spokesman Nick Gollattscheck told CNN: "While we're disappointed a small group of misinformed individuals was able to deny fans what would have been great concerts at SeaWorld ... we respect the bands' decisions."...

Heart has cancelled an upcoming show at SeaWorld after seeing "Blackfish," the powerful documentary which raises concerns about the humaneness and safety of keeping orcas (a.k.a. killer whales) captive. "Blackfish" is turning out to be an extremely influential documentary. Now, the Canadian band Barenaked Ladies has canceled a concert at SeaWorld in Orlando after viewing the CNN documentary about killer whales.
Although the band had previously announced that they would perform at SeaWorld's "Bands, Brews & BBQ" event in February 2014, the Barenaked Ladies quickly faced a negative reaction from fans. An online petition quickly gained around 10,000 signatures, enough to attract Bnl's attention.
A follow-up notice on Wednesday (Nov. 27) indicated that plans had changed. The band posted a message to Bnl's official website and to Facebook reads:
Hey everybody. We've talked things over, and decided not to play at Seaworld at this time. We watch movies too, ya know! Have you seen Star Trek IV? It's quite good. Kidding ... We sometimes do that.

In a very rare move for a TV series, Fox’s Almost Human is teaming with a popular music act to serve as the show’s composer.
Las Vegas-based electronic duo The Crystal Method has been contracted to score at least the first season of the sci-fi drama, starting with Sunday’s premiere. “We were absolutely thrilled to be asked to score Almost Human,” Ken Jordan and Scott Kirkland said in a statement. “The show is really incredible! Although scoring weekly television is a tremendous challenge we feel that this has been the perfect series for us to pick up.

The other day I hopped into Facebook because, you know, why not be pseudo-social, right?. I noted in my news feed that the show-runner from the Kokomo (Indiana) Comic Con was pleading to his friends, customers, and followers to help him live a dream – to secure Denny O’Neil for the 2014 Kokomo Comic Con. I figured since I shared column space with the living legend, I might be able to lend a hand. I made some introductions via e-mail, and well… the gentlemen are ironing out the details. Suffice to say, I love their con, and hope to see Denny there next year. Heck, I hope I see John, Mike, Michael, Emily, Martha, Mindy, Adriane, Glenn and everyone who reads my column there! But then again, like the aforementioned show-runner, I am a dreamer.
