In the spirit of Christmas, we'll forgive NCIS this one.
It's not that "Newborn King" was a bad episode, but it felt like an entirely different show. The holiday theme was almost overblown at times, and there was a high level of (often predictable) cheesiness throughout, a far cry from some of the uber-serious, superbly well-written episodes this and every season.
But, what can I say, it's the holiday season, and it still worked for me. Why?
Marine Lt. Emma Reynolds (guest star Erin Cottrell) for one. Aside from initially locating her, there wasn't much mystery to her case - she was being stalked (hunted, really) because, after becoming pregnant by an Afghan soldier, she carried the potential heir to a key tract of land in Afghanistan that the Dod needed for a highway.
This was pretty much spelled out for us right away, and needless to say, a little far-fetched.

Larry Miller a NCIS Christmas Dad
Larry Miller is going to be a dad on this years Christmas themed episode of NCIS. Over the course of the series we’ve met several of the character’s fathers and other family members. So far this year we’ve met Abby Sciuto’s brother, who was played by Daniel Louise Rivas. Having a comedic background, Miller should function primarily as comedic relief, particularly when you factor in whose father he is.
“Jimmy Palmer is engaged [Brian Dietzen]. And with fiancée Breena comes spending the holidays with his future in-laws,” showrunner Gary Glasberg to EW.com. I’m sure you can figure who Miller will be playing. Who better to play an intimidating in-law than Larry Miller? “We needed a curmudgeon with a sharp tongue and even sharper wit so we were thrilled when gifted actor/comedian Larry Miller expressed a desire to play Ed Slater.

Larry Miller is coming to NCIS next month for the show's Christmas-themed episode.
He'll be playing Ed Slater, the future father-in-law of Jimmy Palmer (Brian Dietzen)!
“Jimmy Palmer is engaged. And with fiancée Breena comes spending the holidays with his future in-laws,” explains NCIS executive producer and show-runner Gary Glasberg to EW.
“We needed a curmudgeon with a sharp tongue and even sharper wit so we were thrilled when gifted actor/comedian Larry Miller expressed a desire to come on board as Ed Slater."
"The holidays wouldn’t be complete without some family tension and fans are certainly going to get some. They may even see a side of Jimmy dealing with Ed they never expected.”
A Palmer storyline should please many longtime fans of Ducky's medical examiner understudy, and the introduction of Breena's dad marks the latest in a long line of father figures.
