Harlequin romance novels are getting a new lease of life in audio form.
The company has struck a deal with podcast company Audio Up, which is behind Stephen King’s Strawberry Spring, to adapt a number of its books into audio series.
Harlequin is the company responsible for the books behind series such as Sweet Magnolias and Virgin River. The plan is to turn 52 books into podcasts.
First up is Montana Mavericks, a scripted dramatic podcast based on In Search of the Long-Lost Maverick, written by Christine Rimmer.
The series is set in Bronco Heights with its small-town charm and Western allure, where Melanie Driscoll, seeking a fresh start, returns home from the big city into the waiting arms of Gabe Abernathy, a rugged cowboy from the town’s most powerful family with secrets of his own.
It will also have an original soundtrack from a number of rising stars...

Exclusive Update, 2:38 Pm: Two days after Starz made public its lack of faith in any more seasons of American Gods, producers Fremantle on Wednesday said the series based on Neil Gaiman’s acclaimed novel is still alive and kicking.
“Fremantle is committed to completing the epic journey that is American Gods, one of TV’s most inclusive series with the most amazing fans across the globe,” a spokesperson for the company told Deadline of a possible fourth season or more. “With Neil Gaiman and this fantastic cast and crew, we are exploring all options to continue to tell this magnificent story.”
The statement today backs remarks made Tuesday by EP Gaiman that the Ricky Whittle- and Ian McShane-led series wasn’t going quietly into the premium cable night.
Two early possibilities for more American Gods that may be coming into focus are Netflix and Amazon, we hear.

“American Gods” may be canceled, but “it’s definitely not dead,” according to author Neil Gaiman.
The fantasy drama, which is based on Gaiman’s book of the same name, got the ax after three seasons at Starz late Monday. The following day, a fan asked Gaiman via Twitter if Netflix might pickup the show for Season 4, “Considering you guys are working on #TheSandman [TV series adaptation] together it would be awesome to finish Ag’s story next! God’s don’t die unless they’re forgotten.”
“It’s definitely not dead. I’m grateful to the team at @Starz for the ‘American Gods’ journey so far,” Gaiman tweeted in response Tuesday. “Fremantle (who make Ag) are committed to finishing the story that began in episode 1, and right now we’re all just waiting to see which way forward is best, and who it’ll be with.”

“American Gods” has been canceled after three seasons at Starz.
“Everyone at Starz is grateful to the dedicated cast and crew, and our partners at Fremantle who brought author and executive producer Neil Gaiman’s ever-relevant story to life that speaks to the cultural climate of our country,” Starz said in a statement Monday.
The news comes a week after the Neil Gaiman adaptation concluded its third season. The 10-episode season debuted in January to declining ratings for the premium cable network after a lengthy hiatus coming out of the behind-the-scenes turmoil on Season 2.
An adaptation of Gaiman’s 2001 novel of the same name, “American Gods” followed the conflict between Old Gods of mythology and New Gods of technology. Ricky Whittle starred as Shadow Moon, an Old God looking to outrun his past by hiding out in a fictional town of Badger State where magic and murder abound, alongside Ian McShane as the mysterious Mr.

The TV gods have turned their favor away from American Gods, at least for now. The series adaptation of Neil Gaiman’s novel starring Ricky Whittle and Ian McShane will not return for a fourth season on Starz, the network confirmed Monday.
The news of the premature end to the often-troubled series is not altogether unexpected, and follows the Season 3 finale on March 21. That season-ender saw Whittle’s Shadow Moon seemingly killed after a vigil at the mythical Tree of Life for his seemingly deceased and estranged father, Mr. Wednesday/Odin, played by McShane. A pivotal point in Gaiman’s book, the incident set up American Gods‘ fourth season with Wednesday taking advantage of Shadow Moon’s sacrifice for Wednesday’s own resurgence in the battle against the New Gods.

“American Gods” will return to Starz for Season 3 starting on Jan. 10.
The Season 3 premiere date was revealed as a message within an image of the Lakeside Clunker Board from Hinzelmann’s shop, referenced within author Neil Gaiman’s novel on which the show is based. In addition to sharing that image, Gaiman, who also created the show and serves as executive producer on it, wrote a letter to the fans, in which he addressed the timeliness of the forthcoming season’s plot, which is set to include more of a focus on immigrants and diversity.
“The struggles of the gods and the people in Season 3 of ‘American Gods’ are the struggles of America,” Gaiman wrote. “We didn’t think it would prove as timely when we plotted it, nor did I think the novel would still be relevant when I wrote it over 20 years ago. American Gods, old and new, are coming back to life in the new year, at least on the small screen. It’s timely too, because “the struggles of the gods and the people in Season 3 of American Gods are the struggles of America,” according to author Neil Gaiman.
The series starring Ricky Whittle and Ian McShane, based on EP Gaiman’s award-winning 2001 novel, will debut its third season on January 10 on Starz.
With former Walking Dead EP Charles “Chic” Eglee in the seemingly ever-changing showrunner seat, the 10-episode new season will take viewers to one of the chiller parts of the divinely inhabited book.
The teasing art work that Starz dropped today reveals not only the debut date of the new season, but a visual reference to Lakeside Clunker Board from Hinzelmann’s shop, a pretty heavy piece of knowledge for fans of the book and the show.

Blythe Danner has been cast on Season 3 of Starz’s “American God” in the recurring guest role of Demeter, the Greek goddess of the harvest “who has an unresolved romantic history” with Ian McShane’s Mr. Wednesday (also known as the Old God Odin).
“However, Wednesday has a bigger obstacle to overcome if he wants her help in his war effort — her involuntary commitment to a mental institution,” according to the character description.
Danner is currently set to appear in four episodes of the small-screen adaptation of the Neil Gaiman novel’s upcoming third season, which begins production this fall. Her season casting follows that of series newcomer Marilyn Manson.

“American Gods” is returning with a new showrunner.
The Fremantle-produced Starz television series based on the Neil Gaiman novel has officially been picked up for a third season and has tapped Charles “Chic” Eglee to lead the season as showrunner and executive producer. The news comes less than a week after the show launched its second season.
Eglee’s credits include “Hemlock Grove,” “The Walking Dead,” “Dexter,” and “The Shield.” He is repped by CAA and Gendler & Kelly.
He will now be the third showrunner at the helm of the series. Bryan Fuller and Michael Green served as co-showrunners during the first season but departed over clashes with Fremantle over the show’s budget and creative direction. Jesse Alexander shepherded “Gods” through its second season, but he was reportedly sidelined during production without being officially let go.

Starz has released a second season trailer for “American Gods,” which returns to the cabler Mar. 10, depicting the brewing war between Gods old and new in the series based on Neil Gaiman’s novel of the same name.

As Mr. Wednesday tosses Shadow (Ricky Whittle) a spear he tells him “war’s a-coming” and that he has a “big role” for him. The trailer also offers first looks at new characters for the season played by Sakina Jaffrey and Dean Winters.

Your prayers to the TV Gods have been answered: buoyed by stellar reviews and equally strong ratings, Starz has officially ordered a second season of American Gods.
Deadline has the scoop, confirming that the raging war between the old gods and the new will spill over into next year – a mid-2018 release window is reportedly the target – though it’s unclear how many episodes season 2 will entail. Today’s report goes on to note that the sophomore run of American Gods will stretch for at least eight instalments, to bring it in line with the first, but there’s every chance the Powers That Be will mull over the possibility of an extension.
Returning at the helm are co-showrunners Bryan Fuller and Michael Green, with American Gods author Neil Gaiman back to executive produce. On the other side of the lens, John Wick fan-favorite Ian McShane and Ricky Whittle will...

Yesterday, the gods shined down on Comic-Con fans as Starz released the first live action trailer of American Gods during the series’ debut Comic-Con panel. Also, making a very special appearance was Kristin Chenoweth who graced the stage as it was announced she will star in the role of Easter. Once known as Ostara, goddess of spring, Easter still embraces the jelly beans and chocolate bunnies associated with the holiday that bears her name, in an effort to stay relevant.

In its plans to stage a war between the old gods and the new – one unrelated to the population of Westeros, mind you – Starz has rounded up a truly star-studded lineup of talent in bringing American Gods to the small-screen.
That’s hardly surprising, really, considering that Neil Gaiman’s novel of the same name is brimming with complex deities that in turn offer up meaty roles for those actors on board. In recent weeks, we’ve caught wind of Gillian Anderson (The X-Files) Cloris Leachman, Peter Stormare and Orange is the New Black star Pablo Schreiber closing deals to star, and now, Deadline is reporting that Argo‘s Omid Abtahi is the latest to join the straight-to-series adaptation.
Abtahi will play Salim, a “sweet, sad, and put-upon foreigner who is one half of a pair of star-crossed lovers.” Behind the camera, Bryan Fuller and Michael Green are the creative pair offering a seralized spin on American Gods, flanked by a team of producers that includes Craig Cegielski, Stefanie Berk and Thom Beers.
For those unfamiliar with Gaiman’s source material, American Gods is, at its mythic core, a sprawling ensemble piece “reflecting society’s modern love of money, technology, media, celebrity and drugs.” David Slade, meanwhile, will helm the pilot of the adaptation, overseeing an ensemble that also features Yetide Badaki as Bilquis, Bruce Langley as Technical Boy, Crispin Glover as Mr. World and Jonathan Tucker as Low Key Lyesmith.
No word of a premiere date for American Gods at the time of writing, but given that production has been underway since March of this year, expect more news to emerge sooner rather than later.

It’s been so long that I can’t even remember when I started hearing about a potential treatment of Neil Gaiman’s American Gods, but it looks like we’ve finally gotten to the stage that lets us celebrate. Starz will be developing it as a series, and it sounds like Neil Gaiman thinks he’s finally got the right situation to make things happen the way that he, and fans, will be satisfied with.
If it’s even half the caliber of the book, we should be in for something special. Of course, there’s a long road between then and now, and anything can happen.
Check out all the info below, and let me know what you think.

As you may or may not be aware, we at SciFi Mafia are somewhat hesitant to post news about shows in development, or even picked up to pilot. That’s because we are wary of heartbreak. So many pilots never make it to series, and an even smaller percentage of series in development make it any further.
Nevertheless, there are times when we just gotta tell you. This is one of them, confirmed by the man himself: FreemantleMedia North America (The Tomorrow People, The Returned) has picked up the rights to develop our beloved Neil Gaiman‘s American Gods novel to series.
As we reported back in 2011, HBO had picked up the option to develop the series with Tom Hanks‘s Playtone. Gaiman explains in his blog what has happened since:
A few people have asked for more background on this: HBO had an option on American Gods for several years.

Not too many shows over at A&E have come under our sci-fi/fantasy/horror/comics tent o’ coverage, with a few notable exceptions like the miniseries Stephen King’s Bag of Bones. Now, however, things are looking interesting over there, with the announcement that they’re developing a new series based on the French series Le Revenants, to be entitled The Returned.
Returned like The 4400? No. Returned like “from the dead.” But it isn’t a zombie show per se… Check out the press release for details. Word from many outlets including Deadline is that Carlton Cuse (Lost, The Strain) is in talks to executive produce, as he has been doing so successfully for A&E with Bates Motel. Here’s hoping that he’s on board, and that he can handle three shows successfully, since we also have high hopes for the Guillermo del Toro-penned The Strain as well.

Exclusive: FremantleMedia North America is assembling a new scripted programming team. I’ve learned that former Lionsgate TV and Gk-tv executive Craig Cegielski has been tapped as Evp Scripted Programming and Development. He’s being joined by Playtone’s Stefanie Berk, who is expected to serve as Svp Scripted. FremantleMedia has been without a scripted team since February when Svp Tony Optican’s contract was not renewed and VP Holly Hines left to head scripted development and production for Participant Media’s new cable network Pivot. Veteran TV exec Cegielski most recently served as president of Graham King’s Gk-tv, a post he left in January. There, he shepherded Camelot, the company’s series for Starz. Before that he served as Evp Programming and Sales, International TV, at Lionsgate. Prior to joining Lionsgate, Cegielski worked for CBS/Kingworld International, specializing in local production and programming. Berk comes from Tom Hanks and Gary Goetzman’s Playtone,...

Lifetime is developing a period drama series about The Hollywood Reporter founder William Wilkerson, which is being produced by Johnny Depp’s Infinitum Nihil and Graham King’s Gk TV. The project, written by Rob Cooper (Stargate: Universe), chronicles the colorful life of Wilkerson, a compulsive gambler who started off as a film executive in New York; lost all his money on Black Friday; founded The Hollywood Reporter; launched a slew of Hollywood nightclubs, including Ciro’s; founded The Flamingo Hotel in Las Vegas; and got entangled with the mob and had to go into hiding in France. “He was the original Don Draper,” Gk TV president Craig Cegielski told British trade Tbi, which broke the story. “He eventually became the conduit between the mob and Hollywood.” According to Tbi, Depp may make a cameo appearance on the potential series, which seems a rather unorthodox choice for female-centric Lifetime. On the film side,...

Gk-tv, a division of Gk Films, and Gale Anne Hurd’s Valhalla Entertainment have partnered to develop/produce a one-hour dramatic television series titled "Port Royal".
Set in the late 17th century on the island of Jamaica, the series will chronicle the namesake port’s notorious rise as "...the richest and wickedest city in the new world" and as a self-governing safe haven for cutthroat pirates, corrupt politicians, and ruthless merchants.
"I have been obsessed with pirates and Port Royal for years, and have a library of books on the subject," said Hurd.
"The real story of privateers and the politics of the era has never been explored on screen, and I’m excited to bring that world to life with the terrific team at Gk-tv".
"In keeping with our focus on cinematic television with a global perspective, we see Gale and her team at Valhalla as a phenomenal partner...
