Why do we find ourselves yielding to the sway of an authoritative regime? Is it a testament to our fragility, or perhaps a divergence from the principles championed by the liberal ethos? Yet, can we guarantee that in ushering in a society governed by liberal ideals, we won’t inadvertently birth a new autocracy? Schirkoa: In Lies We Trust (2024) is an animated film, based on Ishan Shukla’s short film of the same name made in 2016, fearlessly navigates such uncharted territory, compelling us to reassess our perceptions of an all-encompassing society. This cinematic venture invites us to question the fabric of our beliefs, urging a contemplative exploration of the intricate dynamics that shape the landscapes of inclusivity. The enigma between totalitarian governance and freedom beckons us to ponder our allegiance and the ever-shifting nature of power. The narrative unfolds within the suffocating confines of a totalitarian state, where the essence...

Award-winning filmmaker Ishan Shukla’s debut feature ‘Schirkoa: In Lies We Trust’, a dystopian sci-fi animation film which recently had its World Premiere at the 2024 International Film Festival of Rotterdam (IFFR) in the Bright Future section strikes a special chord with the audience.
‘Schirkoa: In Lies We Trust’ tells the story of a dystopian world where people are made to wear paper bags over their heads to dissolve differences, and an anonymous citizen sparks an accidental revolution. Dropping out from Bits, reaching Rotterdam with full marks filmmaker Ishan Shukla’s animated journey
He may have cracked the prestigious Bits entrance but during his time there, what interested him more was writing plays and sketching. He soon realised, not Thermodynamics but looking inside people’s minds interested him. And that is when he decided to do an animation course in Singapore next.
Filmmaker Ishan Shukla, whose dystopian sci-fi animation film ‘Schirkoa: In Lies We Trust’, which will have its world premiere at the prestigious 53rd International Film Festival of Rotterdam (IFFR) smiles, “Well, it may sound all cool now, but believe me, I was really worried that time — what if I don’t get a job after the animation course? Of course, I don’t generally admit that,” he tells Ians.
While he did get a job in Singapore, in less than a year it started getting boring for him.

Kristen Stewart has been in the spotlight for quite some time now, but she is still notoriously private about her life, especially when it comes to who she's dating. While some of her relationships have been more public than others, she has certainly had her fair share of love and heartbreak.
Over the years, she's been linked to a handful of stars, from Robert Pattinson and Stella Maxwell to St. Vincent and Soko. Currently, she's engaged to screenwriter Dylan Meyer, whom she's been with for nearly four years. Back in November 2019, before their engagement, Stewart opened up about their relationship on "The Howard Stern Show," calling their chemistry "sick." She also spoke about her sexuality and dating woes for her November 2020 cover with InStyle, saying, "The first time I ever dated a girl, I was immediately being asked if I was a lesbian. And it's like, 'God, I'm 21 years old.

Founded in 2008 by a quartet of Harvard and MIT economics graduates, the charitable startup GiveDirectly has become one of the world’s fastest-growing nonprofits by virtue of its simple but innovative approach to raising funds for underprivileged communities. Allowing predominantly Western donors to make direct, unconditional cash transfers to poverty-stricken East African individuals via their phones, the concept cuts out the intermediary factors of larger charities — where televisually induced donations of a few dollars a month might have little direct effect on those in need. On the face of it, it seems a sound idea, and at the outset of Sam Soko and Lauren DeFilippo’s smart, calmly probing documentary “Free Money,” you might be forgiven for expecting a thinly disguised, feature-length infomercial for GiveDirectly itself.
Neither the charity nor the documentary, however, work exactly as they initially appear to. What begins as a generous, receptive platform for Michael Faye,...

Lea Glob’s documentary Apolonia, Apolonia, about the Paris-born painter Apolonia Sokol, earned Best Film in international competition as the IDFA awards ceremony unfolded in Amsterdam tonight.
The prestigious honor comes with a €15,000 cash prize. Announcing the award, the five-member jury noted, “This film has characters who breathe life and take us on a journey, opening us up to the worlds of culture and art, of business and politics, of the mechanics of a success story. It is infused with love.”
Glob has been following Soko’s career for well over a decade. According to the Villa Medici website, the figurative painter is “known for her political stance on the art of portraiture, claiming the need to use it as a tool of empowerment and deconstruction of marginalization or domination. That is why she addresses multiple issues such as feminisms, queerness, women’s representation throughout art history and body politics in general.

In one of her first meetings with the villagers of Kogutu, Caroline Teti, an employee of the fast-growing nonprofit GiveDirectly, tells them, “I know you’ve had a lot of visitors.” She’s referring to the various NGOs that have swooped into Kogutu and other corners of the African continent with big promises that often turn up empty. In her stylish dress and heels, Teti presents a new idea to these Kenyans, a program that that would give every eligible adult villager 22 a month for 12 years. “White people,” she tells the villagers, “call it redistribution of wealth.”

What if a company promised to give you money, every month for twelve years, free of charge and without working? The humble people in the modest Kenyan village of Kogutu, are initially (and understandably) worried about what strings are attached when Ngo workers for the charity GiveDirectly arrive offering 22 a month for the next twelve years to any resident over the age of 18. The money, a universal basic income, promises to change their lives. It’s part of a test program, happening in several other countries, to see if direct infusions of cash works better in altering income inequality than standard charitable practices.
“Free Money,” by Sam Soko and Lauren DeFilippo, chronicles the implementation of GiveDirectly’s controversial program by its founder Michael Faye. It begins in 2017 and winds its way through the first four years of the plan, steadily checking in with the recipients to see how they’ve...

In rural Kenya, 22 a month can go a long, long way. We’re talking a life-changing sum of money.
That figure is, in fact, the amount calculated by the nonprofit aid organization GiveDirectly as necessary to conduct an experiment in alleviating extreme poverty in the developing world. In 2018, the Ngo launched a test case in a handful of carefully selected Kenyan villages, offering adult residents 22 a month in free cash transfers, no strings attached, to do with as they chose. Not just for a single year – for 12 years.
The documentary Free Money, making its world premiere on Sunday at the Toronto International Film Festival, explores the real-world impact of that experiment on villagers in the hamlet of Kugutu. American filmmaker Lauren DeFilippo joined forces with Kenyan director Sam Soko to make the film. DeFilippo originated the project by securing permission from GiveDirectly to film their bold endeavor.

The term “feminist icon” certainly applies to Andrea Dworkin, but like most such capsule descriptions (especially ones that use the I-word), there’s something limiting and frozen about it. Pratibha Parmar, a British writer-director who works in both nonfiction film and episodic TV, breaks through the labels with I Am Andrea, a portrait that’s shaped by Dworkin’s experiences, some of them horrific, and fueled by her radical intellect and incisive words. As Gloria Steinem (one of the documentary’s executive producers) once said, “In every century, there are a handful of writers who help the human race to evolve. Andrea was one of them.” Parmar etches a sympathetic profile that acknowledges the complexity and divisiveness of her subject and argues for the continued relevance of her work.

There aren’t too many figures in feminist history more controversial than Andrea Dworkin. The radical feminist writer and activist, whose work spanned the 1970s, ’80s, and ’90s, has become synonymous with a stringent sect of anti-pornography, sex-negative conservative feminism that seeks to limit sexual freedoms, including LGBTQ and sex worker rights. But you wouldn’t know any of that from “My Name Is Andrea,” a hagiographic documentary shaped only by Dworkin’s writing and words from British filmmaker Pratibha Parmar.
Using a series of dramatic recreations with various actresses playing Dworkin at different ages, “My Name Is Andrea” seeks to recast the author as some misunderstood literary prophet — devoid of any of the historical context that might have persuaded her many detractors. Her writing is powerful, even beautiful at times, and the likes of Ashley Judd, Amandla Stenberg, Christine Lahti, Soko, and Andrea Riseborough do it justice in lyrical monologues.

Rest in peace, dear one -- if you're truly dead.
With Elite's sadistic track record of killing off main characters, I shouldn't have been surprised by this season's fatal blow, but it floored me, so much so that I'm not sure it was fatal, after all. Bodybag, or it didn't happen, right?
Spoilers ahead! If you haven't watched, continue at your peril
I have two theories: Samuel is dead, the cliffhanger cleverly employed to compel us to watch Season 6 (not that we wouldn't anyway) or Samuel is on the brink of death, will live, and will leave Las Encinas for good, Itzan Escamilla exiting the show.
The latter would be preferable.
Samuel has gone through far too much to die poolside of a head injury. However, that manner of death is eerily similar to that of his Season 1 lover Marina, so it could be a full-circle closure of his storyline.

Okay, here’s a unique twist on some classic fables, one that could truly be called a “fairy tale for grown-ups”. Like many of those “bedtime stories,’ it concerns the main character who’s whisked away from their dull existence into an exciting fantasy realm. Ah, but here the starting point is oppressive sexism in a place all too similar to our world. And the escape spot is not full of whimsical, magical creatures. No, it’s a place of blood, bullets, and near-constant warfare, as the land’s group of transplanted sisters spend much of their days brethelessly repeating one phrase into a spawky radio transmitter. In Military Phonetic Alphabet, over and over, it’s always Mayday.
And that’s just what we hear on the soundtrack (“Mary….Alice…Yankee..”) as the black screen gives way to a modern-day young college-age couple in a late model car. Ana (Grace Van Patten...

"Darkness eats, darkness keeps." Vertical has released an official trailer for the film The Blazing World, marking the feature directorial debut of actress / filmmaker Carlson Young. This first premiered at the 2021 Sundance Film Festival earlier in the year. Decades after the accidental drowning of her twin sister, a self-destructive young woman returns to her family home, drawn to an alternate dimension where her sister may still be alive. Sundance then adds: "Through an epic journey down the smokiest and scariest corridors of her imagination, she tries to exorcise the demons pushing her closer and closer to the edge." Freaky! Carlson Young also stars in the film, along with Udo Kier, Dermot Mulroney, Vinessa Shaw, Soko, and John Karna. This looks like it goes to really weird, demented, dark places. You just have to see it because - whoa. Here's the official trailer (+ poster) for Carlson Young's The Blazing World, direct...

30-year-old filmmaker, writer, director, actress Carlson Young came in guns blazing at Sundance this year with her directorial debut, “The Blazing World,” a “feminist horror” and down-the-rabbit-hole surreal fairytale about female trauma. Co-written with Pierce Brown and starring Udo Kier, Dermot Mulroney, Vinessa Shaw, Soko, John Karna, and Young herself, the film was a dark, nightmare fantasy about Margaret (Young), who had been plagued with dreams of a strange world since she was a little girl.

"Mary. Alpha. Yankee. Delta. Alpha. Yankee." Magnolia Pictures has released an official trailer for an indie action thriller titled Mayday, which originally premiered at the 2021 Sundance Film Festival earlier this year. Marking the feature debut of talented filmmaker Karen Cinorre, this subversive film is a modern feminist fable unlike anything you've ever seen. Ana is transported to a dreamlike and dangerous land where she joins an army of girls engaged in a never-ending war along a rugged coast. Though she finds strength in this exhilarating world, she soon comes to realize that she's not the killer they want her to be. The film stars Grace Van Patten as Ana, with Mia Goth, Soko, Havana Rose Liu, Juliette Lewis, and Théodore Pellerin. "I wanted to create a radical portrait of young women I’ve loved and admired throughout my life. These are modern heroines who deserve a big story with the kind of action,...

A premiere at Sundance Film Festival earlier this year, Mayday brings together Grace Van Patten, Mia Goth, Soko, Havana Rose Liu, Juliette Lewis, and Théodore Pellerin in a fantastical story featuring a female army engaged in a mysterious, never-ending war with men. Directed by Karen Cinorre, Magnolia Pictures picked it up for an October 1 release and now the first trailer and poster have arrived.
I said in my review, “Not far removed from the island nation of Themyscira as recently seen in Wonder Woman’s big-screen/HBO Max adventures, the world of Mayday is one dominated by women. Establishing little rules or context with its fable-esque qualities, Marsha (Mia Goth) is the leader of a small crew of female soldiers, destined to decimate any men that may find themselves in their crosshairs. The FX network seems to be in the anthology market to stay. After the recent release of Ryan Murphy’s latest “American Horror Stories” series, actor B.J. Novak is entering the genre with his new series, “The Premise.”
Here’s the synopsis according to FX: “‘The Premise’ is a bold and provocative half-hour anthology of standalone stories about the times we live in. The curated collection of character-driven episodes challenges our shared morality tales, choosing art over argument, as it engages with the most relevant and meaningful issues of the modern era.”
The first trailer for the series dropped on Friday and includes several of the A-list actors that will be telling Novak’s various stories. “Dear Evan Hansen” actor Ben Platt will be doing an episode playing a “white, woke, twenty-something ally to social justice causes” who discovers his poorly filmed sex tape provides evidence against a police officer in a disputed incident.

With his new FX anthology series The Premise, creator B.J. Novak looked “to say something simple and sincere” about some of the most compelling issues of our time, “exploring an idea thoroughly and moving the hell on.”
“I wrote these scripts and said, ‘These are stories about our time, the way I see them,'” Novak shared during the show’s TCA panel on Friday. “It was really about, how do we tell the stories of our time by looking them in the eye and having fun with them?”
The Premise is a generally comedic collection of “one-of-a-kind stories,” which Novak pitched to FX as “The Twilight Zone without the sci-fi,” or “Black Mirror without the dystopian technology.”
In its first season, the show will tackle such topics as gun violence, allyship, social justice, social media, bullying, revenge, racial and immigration issues, celebrity, sex, incentives, and religion, putting its own unique twist on each.

B.J. Novak’s FX on Hulu anthology series “The Premise” aims to bring humor to some of the most serious topics of our time — like gun violence — though some of its pauses are for deep thoughts and not belly laughs.
Friday, at FX’s second (of three) Television Critics Association (TCA) press tour days, reporters got the first look at the show’s trailer. The sneak peak starts off on one squirrelly fella’s “worst sex tape ever,” one that could actually bright to justice police misbehavior taking place in the background. With a slimmer lineup and much of the action taking place online rather than in Park City, the 2021 Sundance Film Festival will be anything but normal. But if early sales activity is any indication, the hybrid virtual/in-person festival will still serve as a key acquisitions market for distributors.
News of the first deals broke on December 16, the day after Sundance revealed its full slate of 72 features. That’s when Bleecker Street announced it has acquired North American rights to Nikole Beckwith’s “Together Together” and Magnolia Pictures revealed it has nabbed Rodney Ascher’s Midnight section pick “A Glitch in the Matrix.”
While those two movies come from established filmmakers, over half of the festival lineup comes from first-time feature directors. Over 90 percent of the slate are world premieres.
That suggests there is plenty of opportunity for the discovery of hidden gems. But with streaming — coupled with satellite screenings...

Sundance Film Festival: London has revealed that “Zola” and “Coda” will be among the 2021 lineup, when the festival returns to Picturehouse Central next month.
“Coda” — an acronym meaning “Child of Deaf Adults” — features Marlee Matlin (“The West Wing”) and 19-year-old Emilia Jones (“Locke & Key”) navigating their relationship, while “Zola” is based on a 148-tweet viral Twitter thread from 2015 by Aziah “Zola” Wells. It stars Taylor Paige (“Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom”) and Riley Keough (“Max Max: Fury Road”) and will close the 4-day festival.
Edgar Wright’s rockumentary “The Sparks Brothers,” described as a “musical odyssey,” opens the festival on July 29.
Other feature film offerings, which have been selected from the longer line-up shown at the Sundance Film Festival, include “The Nest,” starring Jude Law (“Sherlock Holmes”), animation “Cryptozoo,” which features Lake Bell (“BoJack Horseman”) and Michael Cera (“Arrested Development”), and documentary “Writing With Fire,” about a female-run Indian newspaper, which...

The vast majority of successful fiction films begin with a good script. Often in documentary the opposite is true—the creative breakthrough comes in throwing out the “script” and adjusting as reality unfolds.
That theme emerged as producers of the seven theatrical documentaries nominated for Producers Guild of America Awards convened Saturday to discuss their experiences. Ramona S. Diaz, producer-director of A Thousand Cuts, said her original idea was for a “Robert Altman-esque” ensemble story about life in the Philippines under the authoritarian rule of President Rodrigo Duterte. But then the journalist Maria Ressa, who butted heads with Duterte as Diaz filmed, emerged as the central focus.
“As a documentary filmmaker I’m really aware of the shifts in the story and how I need to pivot,” Diaz explained during the Zoom roundtable discussion. “Sometimes I get very attached to this idea of this ensemble cast but then when...

“Mayday,” which took its first European bow at the Rotterdam Film Festival this week after premiering at Sundance, is the debut feature of U.S. writer/director Karen Cinorre.
The film tells the tale of oppressed young waitress Ana working at a wedding, who falls through an oven into a female-dominated utopia.
The character then joins group of seemingly like-minded soldiers who are involved in a Siren-like mission to lure male soldiers to their deaths via fake mayday calls.
The feature is one of a number of films vying for this year’s Tiger Award at Rotterdam exploring female self-realization and shares similar revenge fantasy themes to fellow Sundance breakout, Emma Fennell’s “Promising Young Woman.”
While Cinorre’s original script for the film pre-dates both the #MeToo and “Time’s Up” movements, she remains hopeful that these events have created “a new openness” that has meant films like hers are more likely to get made.

With Covid-19 still raging around the world, a melancholy love story about a 2021 viral pandemic that ravages people’s relationships, romances and sense of self is perhaps not the easiest sell at the moment. Such timeliness proves both a blessing and a curse for “Little Fish,” writer-director Chad Hartigan’s heartfelt tale about a couple struggling with a global epidemic of memory loss. A portrait of life’s impermanence, it’s , although its theatrical and VOD prospects may be undercut by the fact that, in this present environment, its thematic concerns hit quite close to home.

Like the Sirens of Greek mythology dolled up in Wes Anderson-esque Girl Scout uniforms, the four young women in Karen Cinorre’s stylish yet surface-level feminist fantasy “Mayday” lure off-screen soldiers to their deaths with invented pleas for help. “They can’t resist a lady in distress,” says Marsha (Mia Goth), coaching newcomer Ana (Grace Van Patten) on how to craft an enticing Sos call. “They like their girls softer, with less authority.”
Debuting at the 2021 Sundance Film Festival, “Mayday” joins recent female-revenge fantasies “Promising Young Woman” and “Assassination Nation” in imagining a scenario where women are mad as hell and not gonna take it anymore. Like those films, it’s simultaneously exhilarating and confused, in part because the patriarchy is too big a Goliath to be crippled by a single strident slingshot, no matter how accurate its aim. The Kenyan film Softie is gaining momentum as documentary features make their closing arguments for inclusion on the Oscar shortlist, with preliminary voting set to wrap up Friday. The film was nominated Tuesday for a Producers Guild Award, honoring the work of director-producer Sam Soko and producer Toni Kamau.
“Crying!!! Stunned! Screaming!!! What?!!” Kamau tweeted in reaction to the nomination. For his part, Soko tweeted, “Hoarse from screaming with [Toni Kamau] because this is unbelievable!”
The PGA recognition follows a nomination as Best Feature at the IDA Documentary Awards last month, as well as prizes at film festivals around the world, including Durban, South Africa. Softie, the story of Kenyan photojournalist-turned-political-candidate Boniface “Softie” Mwangi, began its awards journey a year ago at the Sundance Film Festival, where Park City crowds “got” the film, overcoming the filmmakers’ concern about a potential culture gap.

Tucked inside its dazzling, old-fashioned opening credits, Carlson Young’s confounding “The Blazing World” offers an early glimpse of what’s to come. The film’s writing credits (Young and Pierce Brown) include the notation that the film was “inspired by Margaret Cavendish and other dreams.” Cavendish was a 17th-century English aristocrat, and a trailblazer: She was a scientist, a prolific playwright, and the author of the utopian sci-fi forerunner “The Blazing World.” Young seems to work from more than Cavendish’s singular work, also leaning into her own “dreams” and a hearty dose of surreal cinematic predecessors.
A talented young actress best known for her work on “Scream: The Series,” Young first approached the material in her 2018 short of the same name. She also has a knack for casting, with co-stars who include Dermot Mulroney, Vinessa Shaw, singer Soko, and Udo Kier (being extremely Udo Kier).

Ana’s (Grace Van Patten) restless sleep is punctuated with all sorts of strange things: nightmares about endless tunnels, worryingly quiet men, vintage bombers laden with airmen, and a clear voice spelling out “M A Y D A Y” via the phonetic alphabet. But all that, strange as it may seem, is at least better than her real life, complete with a dead-end catering job and a sense of invisibility that’s not only in her head. In Karen Cinorre’s fantastical, feminist “Mayday,” Ana shrugs off her earthbound existence for something that, at first, seems like her ticket to fulfillment and happiness. But thorny questions persist, even in the most compelling of dreamscapes, and
Ana’s life in a sterile seaside town isn’t a happy one, and when Cinorre’s feature debut opens, she’s starting another day that seems destined to be just like the ones before it.

Not far removed from the island nation of Themyscira as recently seen in Wonder Woman’s big-screen/HBO Max adventures, the world of Mayday is one dominated by women. Establishing little rules or context with its fable-esque qualities, Marsha (Mia Goth) is the leader of a small crew of female soldiers, destined to decimate any men that may find themselves in their crosshairs. Oh, and everyone may be dead and this is all some sort of otherworldly realm. Such is the strange set-up for Karen Cinorre’s folkloric, ambitious debut feature, which intrigues with its unexpected tonal melange, even if the execution comes up lacking.
Before the film’s protagonist, Ana (Grace Van Patten), arrives washed up on a mysterious shore, she’s introduced beginning a day’s work as part of a catering team at a wedding venue. She has a friendly relationship with her co-worker (Théodore Pellerin), who...
