George Lucas’ epic Star Wars franchise took the world by storm for its creator’s genius in visualizing an unforgettable sci-fi fantasy world. The prequels and sequels that covered decades of cinema saw stars like Harrison Ford, Carrie Fisher, and Mark Hamill go down in history as evergreen Hollywood actors.

While it is common knowledge that the films required a high level of technical expertise and research to bring to life, certain scenes proved to be extremely challenging for members of the cast. Fisher in particular, recalled a seriously cringeworthy segment with the huge alien Jabba the Hutt in Return of the Jedi, for which she got her revenge later.

Roger Corman, the pioneering producer and director, known affectionately as “the king of B movies,” passed away on May 9 at his home in Santa Monica, California. Corman had as much influence over modern Hollywood as Steven Spielberg or Martin Scorsese. And for good reason: Without him there likely wouldn’t even have been a Spielberg or Scorsese.
This maker of hundreds of low-budget horror, sci-fi, and exploitation films is to this day remembered by many, and rather unfairly, as a B-movie hack, but Corman’s aesthetic sensibilities have come to dominate the franchises we now call tent poles, and his protégés number among the most influential people in cinema. And he enjoyed every minute of it.
Corman came off as very humble, resembling no one so much as Mr. Rogers. He laughed at himself and his experiences frequently. Many of the movies that he made were ridiculous but they were knowingly so.

In the 2022 miniseries, Obi-Wan Kenobi, Hayden Christensen, and Ewan McGregor reunited on screen for the first time since 2005 when their iconic characters locked horns once again. The series which is part of George Lucas’ cult Star Wars franchise, is set years after the events in Revenge of the Sith, and brings the titular Jedi Master face to face with his arch nemesis Darth Vader.

Apart from many déjà vu moments from the various films, the series also brought back some memorable props, including the famous healing vessel called the bacta tank. Christensen who was required to get into this big water-filled vessel for his character, dispensed with a body double for the test run, and went through training to master the art of being underwater without the help of any breathing aids.

Ubisoft found themselves in hot water recently when it was revealed that one of the missions featuring Jabba the Hutt in the upcoming Star Wars Outlaws game would be sold as day one Dlc and locked behind a pricey paywall and the game’s special edition. Understandably this went on to cause much anger in the community, especially as Jabba has featured heavily in marketing to this point.
The games industry is at a very interesting point, the last few years have seen an increase in games as a service, micro-transactions, and Dlc. There has also been even more pushback from players, as games seem to be more about being vehicles used to make a quick buck, than being actual creative endeavors from studios that want to make a stamp on the medium.

When Escape from Tarkov was first released to a select group of players back in 2016, no one knew it would become a cultural phenomenon in the Fps space. Known for its unforgiving and realistic world design, it’s not a title the casual gamer would instantly pick up.
Battlestate Games is banking on this fact or is trying to, at the very least. The developer has added a fifth game edition, the Unheard Edition, and included a game mode that has left many fans feeling betrayed and annoyed. Especially those who have already purchased the previous editions!

While the Star Wars saga has expanded into a vast universe over the years, including TV series, animation, novels, and comic books, certain films have failed to capture the hearts of fans as effectively as others. Despite efforts such as re-releases and anniversary celebrations, one film, in particular, stands out for its ongoing struggle to win over the fandom, The Phantom Menace.

It’s like everyone is planning a battle royale game for their franchises, and Ubisoft’s Watch Dogs is no different. Well, ‘would have been no different’ is more appropriate, as the studio’s battle-royale game will likely never see the light of day. After all, a new game can’t be released from an already-dead franchise.
This might be news to some fans, but others would have seen the writing on the walls a while ago. While some franchises experience a natural death with the conclusion of their stories, others are forcibly interred due to their lack of profitability. It’s disappointing to see the franchise fall into the latter category, with a potential title that could have saved the series.

Ubisoft’s single-player Star Wars Outlaws will have a season pass, meaning players will have to pay more money to unlock a Jabba the Hutt mission.
Despite being a single-player affair, Ubisoft’s much-anticipated action sandbox Star Wars Outlaws will have a season pass. This is, as you’re probably aware, a polite term meaning that extra stuff is locked away behind a paywall.
In the case of Star Wars Outlaws, this extra stuff includes a mission featuring Jabba the Hutt – a character whose presence in the game has been heavily trailed since it was revealed last year.
On Ubisoft’s website, it plainly states that certain elements of the game – most prominently the Jabba’s Gambit mission – will only be accessible at launch for customers who buy the more expensive Gold or Ultimate editions. These cost £104.99 and £119.99 respectively.

The Greedo scene from George Lucas' 1977 film "Star Wars" remains steeped in controversy. /Film has written before about the many, many cuts of the Greedo scene throughout "Star Wars" history, and how baffling each subsequent change has been. In the original 1977 cut of "Star Wars," the affable Han Solo (Harrison Ford) is approached by a mugwump-like alien named Greedo (Paul Blake) in a seedy bar. Greedo is there to collect on a debt, holds a weapon on Han, and will likely kill him right at the table where he is sitting. Han, seeing the danger, plays it cool. He reaches under the table, surreptitiously unholsters his blaster, and kills the unsuspecting Greedo before the alien can get a shot off. The bar is so sleazy, no one seems to really care about the murder.
In 1997, Lucas released a polished re-edit of "Star Wars" touted as the "Special Edition." The 1997 cut added a new wrinkle.

Ubisoft’s Star Wars Outlaws was being hailed as the game that fans of the franchises needed and deserved. The story trailer and gameplay walkthrough have given gamers a glimpse at the rarely explored underground elements within the story.
Well, as with almost everything Ubisoft, this title too has landed in some controversy. It seems the company is implementing some unpopular practices it’s learned from Dragon’s Dogma 2. However, it is doing so in the worst way possible, as a titular and much-awaited mission is now locked behind a season pass.

"Oh, they've encased him in carbonite. He should be quite well protected, if he survived the freezing process, that is," quips C-3Po after Han Solo (Harrison Ford) is frozen alive in a slab of carbonite in "The Empire Strikes Back." It is a memorable scene, as it is preceded by Leia's (Carrie Fisher) declaration of love for Han, to which he replies with the characteristically suave, brilliantly ad-libbed "I know." The frozen Han is eventually handed over to Jabba the Hutt, whose lair is later infiltrated by Luke Skywalker (Mark Hamill) and gang to rescue their friend from his frozen state in "Return of the Jedi."
This is not the only instance of a person being carbon-frozen in the "Star Wars" universe. Although the process was widely used to encase and preserve transport materials (such as gaseous substances), it was often utilized to transfer sentient beings. Even Anakin Skywalker...

In this brave new world of "Star Wars" fandom, it's almost unfathomable that there exist elements within the various films, novels, comics, and TV shows that don't have some sort of backstory or origin point. While obviously this stems from the huge fanbase for "Star Wars" loving the fictional universe so much that they wish to study and know absolutely everything that's in it, this trend also originated out of an inherent idea popularized by creator George Lucas with the very first movie in the franchise back in 1977 -- the implication that we're seeing a small part of a larger world, and every planet, ship, and creature we see (whether in the foreground or background) has its own history and story.

This article contains spoilers for "Star Wars: The Bad Batch" season 3, episode 5, "The Return."
The latest episode of "Star Wars: The Bad Batch" gives us our first adventure with the core surviving members of Clone Force 99 and Crosshair. Naturally, there is still a high level of mistrust between them. When they need to decode secret Imperial plans in the hopes of getting more information about the Empire's operation on Mount Tantiss, Crosshair volunteers information about a location he knows of where they might be able to decode it. Though Hunter is loathe to trust their comrade-turned-enemy-turned-comrade, they all decide to head to the abandoned Imperial Depot on the ice planet of Barton IV, which first appeared in "The Bad Batch" season 2, episode 12, "The Outpost" (itself one of the season's best episodes).
However, this episode also gives us a chance to see the nerdery on display from the show's creatives, as...

Director Denis Villeneuve's "Dune: Part Two" is lighting the world on fire right now, much like Paul Muad'Dib's (Timothee Chalamet) jihad will be doing to the known universe after the movie's end. The sequel enjoyed a box office debut twice as big as the first "Dune" did in 2021. Unlike was the case with David Lynch's 1984 "Dune," which earned too little for sequels, it seems that Warner Bros. now has its next blockbuster franchise.
From the Worms to the Spice (which the movies hardly explain), the world of "Dune" is quite weird. One of this bizarre iceberg's tips is the villainous Baron Vladimir Harkonnen, leader of the Harkonnen feudal house. Played in the recent movies by Stellan Skarsgård, the Baron is about 600 pounds (reflecting his gluttonous wealth) and to get around, he doesn't walk, he floats with anti-gravity belts. Frank Hebert's original "Dune" books were an influence on...

Life is often described as a fleeting flame, here one moment and gone the next. This unfortunate reality was tragically reminded with the recent passing of actor Mark Dodson, a beloved voice in the worlds of Star Wars and Gremlins, at the age of 64.

Dodson’s absence will be deeply felt by fans and colleagues alike. His legacy, however, will live on through the characters he brought to life with his exceptional voice-acting talent.

The current version of "Star Wars" on Disney+ is far different from what the film looked like when it was first released.
Some of the changes have been baffling, causing years-long debates (i.e. "Han shot first"). Long-term Starwoids have become very, very annoyed by the persistent and unnecessary re-edits "Star Wars" has gone through over the years. Indeed, it seemed after the fifth or sixth re-tinkering that there would never be a "final draft" of "Star Wars," and either George Lucas or Disney would constantly recut the film to match whatever corporate mandate they were following that week. Someone actively decided to add that "McClunky!" sound effect. It's doubly frustrating that the original theatrical cut of "Star Wars" hasn't been made available to the public since 1993.
Naturally, fans have been attempting to "rescue" "Star Wars" ever since the first changes. One may not know when the very first "Star Wars" fan edit was made,...

When it comes to the music of "Star Wars," composer John Williams rightfully gets all the glory. But what about the bands from the "Star Wars" universe? Even though we can't head to the nearest dive bar to hear them play live, don't they deserve to be celebrated in the same way we show our love for Led Zeppelin or Foo Fighters? The pop culture fashion experts at Heroes & Villains certainly think so, because they've just released a new line of t-shirts celebrating the likes of Figrin D'An and the Modal Nodes, Sy Snootles, and the Max Rebo Band. What makes them particularly great is that they each look like vintage band memorabilia, as if you attended one of their signature shows in a galaxy far, far away.

Actor Taraji P. Henson became a more notable name thanks to her work in projects like Empire and Hidden Figures. But this success might’ve felt bittersweet for the actor, who has been candid about feeling overlooked in the film industry.

"Star Wars" has some great female characters that have made the franchise the cultural phenomenon that it is today. Characters like Leia Organa, the badass that ended the reign of Jabba the Hutt and stood up to Darth Vader like he was just a darkly-clad bully, or Padmé, who helped start the Rebel Alliance and saved Grogu from death. Sure, they may not get flashy medals at a ceremony or a battle against a Sith, but these characters are as essential to the fabric of the galaxy far, far away as any Jedi.
Still, the franchise has an unfortunate track record of forgetting about its female characters — for example, deleting the scene where Padmé starts the Rebellion. Such is the case with the all-time second female character we ever see in the franchise, Aunt Beru, a character who shows up for just a few minutes before dying in the original "Star Wars" movie.

Ezra Bridger is one of the best characters "Star Wars" has introduced in the last decade. Like any classic "Star Wars" protagonist, he starts out cocky and comes from little, but grows to become a confident and competent key figure in the fight against evil.
What makes Ezra different than Luke, Rey, or Ahsoka is how playful he is. Ezra is more likely to quip and make fun of his opponents in the middle of a fight than to whine about power converters. Quite a big amount of Ezra's screentime in the fantastic "Star Wars Rebels" is spent with him pretending to be other people for laughs, whether it's Jabba the Hutt or Lando Calrissian.
Yet Ezra is also capable of getting serious when the situation demands it, showing great feats of strength in the process. One of the best moments of the live-action "Ahsoka" was when Ezra fought against...

Everyone remembers the "Star Wars" Special Editions, which came out almost 30 years ago. In 1995 and 1996, Lucasfilm marketed the Thx video release of the original "Star Wars" trilogy as, "The Original, one last time." That was because George Lucas had begun work on finishing "Star Wars" the way he saw fit, with the remastered and altered "Special Edition."
The Special Edition releases of "Star Wars" were a huge box office success and brought the saga back into the minds of an eager public in 1997, a full two years before it would take over the world once more with "The Phantom Menace." But according to Lucasfilm producer Rick McCallum, George Lucas wasn't initially interested in re-releasing the "Star Wars" films in theaters for its 20th anniversary.

Over the course of "Star Wars," "The Empire Strikes Back," and "Return of the Jedi," the masked character of Boba Fett only has four lines of dialogue and six and a half minutes of screentime. Add in "The Star Wars Holiday Special," and the character suddenly had 20 additional lines. Either way, he was not a major player in "Star Wars," and ultimately fell into the mouth of a Shai Hulud on Arrakis a Sarlacc on Tattooine. It wasn't until the decade-and-a-half following the release of 1983's "Jedi" that Boba Fett would come to be admired by Starwoids who watched the "Star Wars" movies dozens of times each. In the "Star Wars" prequel films released from 1999 to 2005, Boba Fett was given a mythic backstory, and in 2021, he became the star of his own TV series.

"Star Wars" creator George Lucas can be notoriously picky about updating and tweaking his work, as demonstrated by the additions he made to the original trilogy for their 1997 theatrical re-release. But when it came to "Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back," he truly went above and beyond. During the film's initial limited theatrical run before going nationwide, Lucas decided he wanted to go back in and tweak the film a little more. That's right — even though "The Empire Strikes Back" was already in theaters, he wanted to make even more edits. This could have been a potential logistical nightmare, but the folks at Lucasfilm and Industrial Light & Magic (Ilm) somehow pulled it together.
In a retrospective for the 40th anniversary of "The Empire Strikes Back" for StarWars.com, Ilm general manager Tom Smith and Ilm effects cameraman Ken Ralston recalled the director's zany requests to change things after the movie was already in theaters.

After making his triumphant return in The Mandalorian, Temuera Morrison was finally given center stage with The Book of Boba Fett. The seven-episode series revealed how Boba Fett had survived his supposed death in the Sarlaac pit in Return of the Jedi and his quest to take over Jabba the Hutt’s criminal empire. The Book of Boba Fett received mixed reviews, but fans have still been wondering if and when they might see season 2 of the series.
Well, Temuera Morrison spoke with NewsHub over the holidays and didn’t seem optimistic about the chances of a second season. “I don’t know what’s going on there,” Morrison said. “We’re coming out of this downtime period so I think everyone is just settling back in and it all goes back to budgets and what they want to do and how much the thing costs. I really don’t know.

James Wan’s Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom is a minimum viable product, plopped into the theater with an apathy as pervasive and all-encompassing as the ocean itself. Despite being the successor to a film that got over with fans on the strengths of some big creative swings, Aquaman 2’s job is to simply exist—the last cynical hope of squeezing a few nickels out of the unsalvageable mess that is Warner Bros.’s last decade of superhero movies.
There’s some logic to the approach. Disconnected from having to exist as part of a larger universe, the film keeps things nice and tidy, demanding nothing of viewers. Despite some wild gesticulating toward the idea of Arthur Curry (Jason Momoa) as a bro-ey husband and father to an adorable newborn, Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom’s central concern is that Black Manta (Yahya Abdul-Mateen II) still wants revenge for Aquaman...

Released in 2018, the first Aquaman movie delivered a refreshing take on the DC Extended Universe, infusing the superhero genre with a blend of high camp, stunning visuals, and oodles of surrealist humour. Fast forward five years, and director James Wan returns with Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom, a sequel that takes the aquatic hero on a new, if not exactly as exciting, journey.
The film opens with Arthur Curry (Jason Momoa) leading a dual life, balancing his responsibilities as the King of Atlantis and his adventures on land. Married to Mera (Amber Heard) and raising a son, Arthur Jr., Aquaman faces the challenges of royal duties and bureaucratic conflicts within the Atlantean council.
The plot takes a dark turn as Arthur’s nemesis, David Kane, resurfaces with a vengeful agenda and a plot to destroy his one true enemy. Arthur is then forced to team up with his estranged brother...

Starting in the 2000s, for a little over a decade, 3D was sold as a value-added feature of moviegoing, even though, with rare exceptions, it never worked too well or added very much. (I would argue that it subtracted.) In most cases, 3D was a rip-off — a carny-barker way for studios to jack up ticket prices. That’s why the fad mostly faded away. It’s been a while since I was handed 3D glasses before walking into a movie screening, so when that happened before the media showing of “Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom,” it was hard not to wonder: Why are they gilding this sea lily?
As it turns out, “Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom” benefits from 3D significantly less than the first “Aquaman” (2018) would have. That movie was mostly a boilerplate DC origin story, but it wasn’t badly told, and the underwater sequences — the heart of...

Let's all celebrate an underappreciated character in "Star Wars: Episode VI -- Return of the Jedi." That character is Oola (Femi Taylor), the enslaved Twi'lek dancer working for crime boss Jabba the Hutt. While my own headcanon says she could have escaped after being thrown into the rancor pit since we didn't actually see her die, she didn't have an easy time while living and entertaining under duress at Jabba's palace.
As it turns out, the dancing wasn't easy for Taylor either. She's a wonderful performer who was a dancer in the musical "Cats" in London and in the 1998 TV movie of the play. She was even asked back to film new scenes for the "Return of the Jedi" special edition, including some time in the rancor pit. (It's best not to think about how she had to deal with the CGI song performed in the special edition.) Taylor...

One of the most infamous deleted scenes from the original "Star Wars" was an encounter Han Solo had with Jabba the Hutt years before the character was introduced in "Return of the Jedi." The scene takes place before he takes off from Mos Eisley with Obi-Wan Kenobi and Luke Skywalker in tow and was a thing of legend for over a decade before George Lucas reincorporated it back into the film for the 1997 Special Edition release.
The idea to make Jabba the Hutt a giant slug creature didn't come up until later on in the series and the original version of the character was just an Irish actor named Declan Mulholland wearing furs, looking more like a "Game of Thrones" character than a galactic mob boss.

When the "Star Wars" special editions were released in theaters beginning in 1997, there were a lot of upset fans. While George Lucas was able to realize more of his vision for the original trilogy with new technology in the special effects realm, many people wished he'd left them the way they were. I mean, there was a reason they became so popular without the new additions. Things seemed shoved in there and overdone. Sure, there were great moments, like watching all the planets celebrate the fall of the Empire, but a lot of it was bantha poodoo.
One thing that was actually cool — and I remember thinking this the day I saw the "Return of the Jedi" special edition — was the fact that Jabba the Hutt's enslaved Twi'lek dancer Oola (Femi Taylor) got more to do. I do not like that stupid song in the scene where she dances,...

Ah, Boba Fett. The bounty hunter with a Mandalorian helmet first appeared in "The Star Wars Holiday Special" in an animated sequence that was slightly less bats**t bizarre than the rest of that monstrosity (which I do admit to having a soft spot for). He would subsequently return in "Star Wars: Episode V -- The Empire Strikes Back," working for Darth Vader (David Prowse/James Earl Jones) and taking the body of Han Solo (Harrison Ford), frozen in carbonite, to Jabba the Hutt. His role was very small, but that character design was just too good for him to fade into the background. Fans went a little wild over him. Eventually, Boba even got a dad and a backstory in the prequel trilogy, in addition to his very own show on Disney+, "The Book of Boba Fett," starring Temuera Morrison.

A fun piece of trivia: the "Star Wars" character Boba Fett, prior to his inclusion in "The Star Wars Holiday Special" -- which didn't air until November 17, 1978 -- made a live appearance in a parade in the San Anselmo County Fair the previous September. The parade may have been before the character had been given a name, and "Star Wars" fans were tantalized to see a new, mysterious figure walking down the street next to Darth Vader. It was the first appearance of Boba Fett.
The stoic, faceless, and largely mute character, because of his cool helmet, became a fan favorite over the years, and Boba Fett's importance has grown since 1978 to the point where he got his own TV series. Boba Fett has been played by many actors over the years. In "Empire" and in "Return of the Jedi," Jeremy Bulloch wore the suit, while Jason Wingreen played his voice.

Not that this is going to come as a big surprise at this point to anyone who has been following the goings on at Lucasfilm, but Kevin Feige's "Star Wars" movie is not happening. The head of Marvel Studios has been reportedly trying to develop an entry in a galaxy far, far away for several years now. Back in March, it was reported that Feige's movie and Patty Jenkins' "Rogue Squadron" had both been shelved. Now, Feige has addressed the situation directly -- and rather bluntly.
The chief architect of the Marvel Cinematic Universe recently spoke with Entertainment Tonight at a premiere event for "The Marvels" in Las Vegas. For a character that first appeared in animation in the "Star Wars Holiday Special" and had only a few lines in "The Empire Strikes Back," Boba Fett did pretty well for himself. Just last month, “Star Wars” fans were treated to the news that Guillermo del Toro was working with Lucasfilm, at least at one point, on a couple of projects, including a solo film about the villainous Jabba the Hutt. Obviously, that was during a time when “Star Wars” was in a state of flux, and Lucasfilm was desperately trying to figure out the way of the world under Disney’s ownership. Now, it appears the studio has a plan moving forward, but for better or worse, that doesn’t include del Toro’s Jabba film.

For the bulk of Irvin Kershner's 1980 sci-fantasy flick "The Empire Strikes Back," the evil Empire devotes an unreasonable amount of resources to chasing down the scrappy starship known a the Millennium Falcon, a ship full of outlaws and rebels. One of the Empire's most formidable foes, the masked Darth Vader (portayed by David Prowse but voiced by James Earl Jones), thinks that Luke Skywalker (Mark Hamill) is on board the Falcon, and needs to apprehend him for some as-yet unrevealed reason. Luke is away on a religious sabbatical, however, and it will be up to the Falcon's crafty pilot Han Solo (Harrison Ford) to evade capture.
Eventually, Han Solo will be forced to flee into the protection of an old associate named Lando Calrissian (Billy Dee Williams), the Administrator of Cloud City, a city suspended in the clouds above the planet Bespin. Han and Lando have a past. It...

As such, there is a wealth of material there to mull over within the film, material that's only become more interesting since the movie was released. Take the opening act, for instance, set in and around the Hutt gangster Jabba's sail barge and the rescue of Han Solo (Harrison Ford) from it via an intricate, multi-step plan seemingly known only to Luke Skywalker (Mark Hamill). Jabba's penchant for capturing an attractive female of any species, chaining her to himself and using her for his amusement is appropriate for such a (literally) slimy character, yet becomes problematic when he does it to Princess Leia Organa (Carrie Fisher).

You may not know who Warwick Davis is, but there’s a strong chance you’ve seen at least one of his movies. He’s starred in some of the biggest movie franchises of all time. And he’s been in some B-movie dreck. And he’s been the star of a recent streaming reboot. In each case, his career mirrors the various tiers of content, and the inherent problems for each of them in the streaming landscape.
Tier 1: 4-Star IP on One Platform
Davis’ breakout role was as the lovable Ewok Wicket in 1983’s “Return of the Jedi.” As part of the Star Wars franchise, the movie remains safely locked within the gates of Disney+. Although the film does air on broadcast TV from time to time, we expect it will never appear on another streaming platform.
Most streaming platforms have at least a handful of standout titles they will likely never share.
