Jia Zhangke’s is often a cinema of déjà vu: “We’re again in the northern Chinese city of Datong,” Giovanni Marchini Camia wrote for Sight and Sound back in 2019, “it’s again the start of the new millennium, Qiao is again dating a mobster, yet no one else makes a reappearance and there are enough differences to signal that this isn’t a sequel or remake.” Camia was writing about Ash Is Purest White yet much of the same could be said for Caught by the Tides, the director’s latest experiment in plundering his archive––indeed his memories––and spinning what he finds into something new. The protagonist of Tides is again named Qiao and is again played by Zhao Tao, appearing here in more than 20 years of the director’s footage and allowing the viewer to watch that singular creative partnership evolve in real time––one of...

Stalwart Sixth Generation Chinese filmmaker Jia Zhangke leads his partner and muse, Zhao Tao, on a decades-long romantic odyssey in Caught By the Tides, which tries too hard to play with time and form for the connection between its leads to be its central preoccupation.
Measured in silence interspersed with moments of dance and music — both performed and for pleasure — Qiaoqiao (Zhao) starts a relationship with the mysterious young Guo Bin (Li Zhubin) when she spots him across a dance floor. But their happily ever after isn’t to be when Bin grows frustrated and seeks an escape from their home in Datong, in the north of China. Qiaoqiao, confused by his sudden disappearance, goes in search of him, but his new life doesn’t seem to have a place for her.

The Chinese title of Jia Zhangke’s mesmerizing “Caught by the Tides,” a masterfully poetic and pioneering fusion of the old and the new, can be translated in several ways. Jia himself suggests “The Drifting Generation,” but it can also mean “The Romantic Generation” with the etymology of “romantic” lying in the Chinese words for wind and current. The restless motion of the natural world is certainly captured in the English title’s reference to an ocean’s ebb and flow. But what that version cannot adequately convey is the airiness and the yearning that Jia whips in to “Caught by the Tides” — quite miraculously considering he is largely working with repurposed footage from across the last 23 years of his justly celebrated career.
Loosely speaking a love story, “Tides” is also perhaps the most definitive national portrait that Jia, modern China’s foremost cinematic chronicler, has ever delivered. This is...

A searching and scattershot portrait of displacement that’s as likely to resonate with Jia Zhang-ke devotees as it is to mystify those who are new to his work, “Caught by the Tides” finds the Chinese auteur returning the most pivotal characters and locations that have defined his movies over the last two decades. Then again, perhaps it would be more accurate to say that he never left them.
Tracing the faintest contours of a scripted love story around the scaffolding of some documentary footage that Jia has collected over the course of 22 years, this elusive chimera of a film strains to literalize the delicate relationship between time and memory — a theme that has become increasingly central to the director’s work since the Three Gorges Dam was constructed in 2006 (see: “Still Life”), submerging 13 entire cities and forever displacing the millions of people who once lived in them. Here, even...

Despite Kevin Feigeʼs tireless efforts to keep the cogs of the megalomaniacal Marvel universe running, some of the products like the star-studded Eternals come out a bit worse for the wear and bear the brunt of the fans who remain dejected with the performance of the Phase Four era.
The quality of projects originating in the post-Endgame saga of the MCU have performed categorically worse in the recent past. Regardless, not many original projects coming out of that Phase have received the sequel treatment.
Tiamut in Eternals (2021) [Credit: Marvel Studios]With plenty of Marvel films and television projects now facing criticism over their deteriorating quality, it is only fair for audiences to feel nervous after receiving news about a sequel to a Phase Four film. Moreover, the studioʼs stagnating state of work neither shows improvement nor the desire to achieve it, making it difficult to accept Marvelʼs decision regarding a Phase Four film sequel.

Marvel Studios’ Eternals had quite the potential to be the next big ensemble hero-featured hit franchise of its own. But the failure of the movie altered the wind of it in a different direction. The box office failure of the 2021 movie was not the only factor to the potential end; or at least, the blurry future of the movie; the dismay among critics also mattered to a great extent.

Despite he’s most recognized as the master of science fiction, the Dune Director is in fact a jack of all trades, given his well-built drama and thriller features. Thus, his movie recommendations will be of much value for the cinephiles.
Criticizing MCU’s straight-forward approach to blockbusters, Villeneuve emphasized the correctness of the decision to hire an arthouse filmmaker to direct Eternals in 2021. While speaking of it, he recalled another work of this director, the 2017 western, which blew him away the first time he saw it, amazed by its realism.
The movie’s plot can seem quite banal when you just hear it: it follows the life of a young rodeo rider in the reservation in South Dakota. He’s totally not a typical hero, like the early characters of Clint Eastwood, but rather a tired man, who has to deal with his own severe brain damage from a...

Director Sébastien Vaniček has been set to helm the next Evil Dead movie, and it’s easy to see why with his feature debut, the spider horror movie Infested. Playing like a cross between Attack the Block and Arachnophobia, Infested makes you care about its characters while delivering no shortage of skin-crawling spider horror moments.
Available now on Shudder, Infested follows Kaleb (Théo Christine), a lonely 30 year old who’s estranged from his best friend and at odds with his sister over their crumbling apartment. His dreams of opening a reptile zoo get drastically thwarted when he brings home an illegally acquired desert spider, one that happens to be gravid, and it gets loose. One hatched egg sac gives way to hundreds more, plunging the apartment building into a visceral arachnophobic nightmare.

Warning: contains major finale spoilers for ITV’s Red Eye.
By the end of ITV’s Red Eye, Richard Armitage’s character Dr Matthew Nolan had been awake for (approximate calculation) a gazillion hours. Even if he hadn’t been shot saving Hana (Jing Lusi) from that bullet, he’d still have ended the series in a hospital bed due to exhaustion-related organ failure and having blood sugar lower than the Mariana Trench.
Dr Nolan will pull through though, and when he does, he may require a lucid breakdown of what the hell just happened. From car crashes to stapler-surgery to a rogue CIA plot to end the Anglo-China nuclear partnership, all the way to that heroic bullet jump, here’s how everything landed after Red Eye’s surprisingly tight finale.

Henry Cavill’s Man of Steel was the first step in Zack Snyder’s vision for the Dcu. The director brought it a unique and tonally dark film exploring Clark Kent’s evolution into becoming more human and his past catching up to haunt him. The dark and somber tone of the film left fans divided although Cavill’s impressive performance as Superman was praised.

The voice actor chosen for a beloved villain in Avatar: The Last Airbender was originally picked because he reminded the creators of another iconic villainous performance.
It’s pretty amazing, how the casting director for Avatar: The Last Airbender actually got Jason Isaacs to voice Zhao! This wasn’t just about getting a famous actor; it meant getting the exact person who inspired the character. Isaacs’ performance really captures Zhao’s ruthlessness, making him a serious threat to Aang and his friends.

Upon its release, Chloé Zhao’s Eternals made history by becoming the first Marvel Cinematic Universe film to have received a Rotten score on Rotten Tomatoes. Currently, the film sits at a meager rating of 47%. However, having given a 77% score, the audience clearly does not agree with the critics and believes that the film was not really as bad as they are saying. Many fans would agree that while Eternals was not one of the MCU’s greatest works, it still was an entertaining one-time watch, at least.

2021’s Eternals introduced audiences to a new team of heroes in the MCU. The film boasted a fantastic ensemble cast led by Gemma Chan and Richard Madden. Being helmed by an Oscar-winning director, Chloe Zhao, one expected that the film was going to be one of the best in the franchise, especially with Kevin Feige doubling down on his belief in its quality.
2021’s Eternals was not appreciated by MCU fans
The film received mixed reviews from fans and underperformed at the box office. That has been a bit of a constant for the MCU for the past 2 years. With Jonathan Majors now out as Kang, a sequel to Eternals can introduce a powerful villain who is as threatening as Thanos and can be the MCU’s replacement for Kang.

Oppenheimer director Christopher Nolan won the Academy Award for best director, his first Oscar ever, on Sunday night.
“I have so many people to thank,” Nolan said during his acceptance speech. “The most incredible cast, Matt Damon, Robert, Emily, Florence, just so many others, all at the top of their game, led by the incredible Cillian Murphy… a crew, some of whom have been awarded tonight. I can’t say enough about the incredible crew that we got together on this film. Thank you to Chuck Roven for putting the book in my hands… The incredible Emma Thomas, producer of all our films and all of our children. I love you. To the academy, just to say movies are just a little bit over 100 years old. I mean, imagine being there 100 years into painting or theater. The 2024 Oscar nominees for Best Director are Jonathan Glazer (“The Zone of Interest”), Yorgos Lanthimos (“Poor Things”), Christopher Nolan (“Oppenheimer”), Martin Scorsese (“Killers of the Flower Moon”), and Justine Triet (“Anatomy of a Fall”). Our odds currently show that Nolan (3/1) is most likely to win, followed in order by Lanthimos (4/1), Glazer (9/2), Triet (9/2), and Scorsese (9/2).
Three of these five filmmakers have been nominated at least once before, with Scorsese standing out as the only previous victor in the group. Now on his 10th bid (only two behind category record holder William Wyler), he initially triumphed on his sixth for “The Departed” (2007), which is also the only Best Picture winner in his filmography. He earned his remaining notices for “Raging Bull” (1981), “The Last Temptation of Christ” (1989), “Goodfellas” (1991), “Gangs of New York” (2003), “The Aviator” (2005), “Hugo” (2012), “The Wolf of Wall Street” (2014), and “The Irishman” (2020).

The order will conclude the story of Aang’s journey to become the Avatar in fantastical world.
Since the show’s Feb. 22 debut, the series has been Netflix’s top English-language TV show with 41.1 million views, according to the streamer.
While the first season was eight episodes, there’s no word yet on the episode count of the final two seasons. It’s a true battle of fire and ice in the Season 1 finale of Avatar: The Last Airbender. On one side, there’s Avatar Aang (Gordon Cormier), Katara (Kiawentiio), Sokka (Ian Ousley), and the Northern Water Tribe. On the other, there’s the Fire Nation forces, led by Prince Zuko (Dallas Liu), his uncle Ihro (Paul Sun-Hyung Lee), and Commander Zhao (Ken Leung). The Fire Nation seems determined to take the Northern Water Tribe’s capital of Agna Qel’a — and defeat the Avatar once and for all — no matter who dies on their quest for world domination. Some are even willing to sacrifice the primal forces of nature, like the Moon Spirit, to do so.

After myriad failures, Netflix finally seems to have learned the formula to successfully translate anime and animated features into live action, as seen from their recent adaptations of classics like One Piece, Yu Yu Hakusho, and Alice in Borderland. The streaming conglomerate’s latest venture, the newly released adaptation of Avatar: The Last Airbender, is another step in that positive direction, which, albeit not flawless, has the potential to carry forward the Avatar universe, spanning through various spin-offs and print media continuations.
One of the major factors that acts both as an advantage and a drawback in the case of such adaptations is the chance of tweaking the original structure while retelling a narrative, which is occasionally done to include hints for an upcoming storyline. While reviews have been mixed, fans have nonetheless appreciated it since it hasn’t thankfully repeated the disaster that The Last Airbender (movie) was.

Characters and its appropriate representation are indeed one of the few things that define Avatar: The Last Airbender. I think the characters, at least in the animated series, are timeless. Talking about characters, there’s a reason why people usually like anti-hero characters, as they show us their journey of redemption and the bitter struggles that make them who they are. Be it Itachi Uchiha from Naruto, or even Reiner from Shingeki No Kyoujin, one can’t help but empathize with and draw lessons from their predicaments. One such character is Prince Zuko. I remember watching the original animation as a child and absolutely despising him for the first two books, yet I was appalled to see what eventually became of him. Upon rewatching the series as an adult, did I actually empathize with his internal conflicts from the very beginning? As for the live-action adaptation, even though they tried...

When Netflix announced it would be remaking the beloved animated series Avatar: The Last Airbender into a live-action show, fans were immediately skeptical. The original show, created by Michael Dante Dimartino and Bryan Konietzko, is considered one of the greatest animated series of all time. Why try to remake perfection? According to Albert Kim, showrunner for the Netflix adaptation, the reason goes deeper than just trying to capitalize on the popularity of the original. In fact, it stems from the disappearance of the original creators themselves.
Why Did The Original Creators Leave The Netflix Remake? Netflix’s Avatar: The Last Airbender
According to Tatler, in 2018, when the remake was announced, Dimartino and Konietzko were on board as executive producers. But in 2020, the two abruptly departed the project over what they described as a lack of creative control.

Avatar: The Last Airbender had been a big part of my childhood. The best thing about it was that you could watch it even as an adult and still enjoy the beautiful story it portrays. I won’t lie, I am a wee bit disappointed, but what Netflix has tried is to revitalize the importance of the themes portrayed in the series. Especially considering current geopolitical developments, this series reminds us of the implications of imperialism and how authorities around the world still use it to justify their idea of peace and stability. The Last Airbender presented us with timeless characters. Whether they were good or bad, the characters still had a lot to teach us as people in this world. One such character is Zhao, a personification of greed and hunger for power.

This article contains spoilers for Netflix’s Avatar: The Last Airbender episode 2.
Everyone loves Zuko. Avatar: The Last Airbender’s villain turned emo boy turned hero has one of the greatest character arcs in animation, if not all of television history. Starting as the bitter, vengeful nemesis to Avatar Aang, Zuko hoped that if he could capture the Avatar for his father, he’d finally be able to regain his honor. This single-minded approach meant that through much of the show’s first season, Zuko was the main villain. He was willing to burn the world down if it meant accomplishing his goal and that made him a genuine threat.
The Netflix live-action series, though largely faithful to the source material, makes a massive error in not understanding this key part of Zuko’s character early on. Season 1 episode 2 of the Netflix series, “Warriors” which adapts season 1 episode 4 of the original series,...

This article contains spoilers for Netflix's "Avatar: The Last Airbender."
Adaptations and re-imaginings are a tricky thing. They have to capture and recreate the essence of the original while also making changes for (potentially) a new medium, different times, and a new audience. The best ones recognize this and rebuild and remix the original until they end up improving it and making something that feels fresh and brand-new, like HBO's "Watchmen" series or Netflix's animated series "Scott Pilgrim Takes Off." Another opportunity with adaptations is the benefit of hindsight. Even the most meticulous authors and creators cannot possibly think of absolutely everything ahead of time. This offers an opportunity for re-tellings to bring elements that were introduced later in the original story to the forefront.
Netflix's "One Piece" does this. The live-action adaptation of the legendary and long-running manga by Eiichiro Oda introduces the character of Garp much earlier...

Warning: This article contains spoilers for episodes 3 and 4 of "Avatar: The Last Airbender"
With apologies to "Star Wars" fans, there are few sacred texts held up with such rapturous praise that can rival the protectiveness fans of "Avatar: The Last Airbender" harbor towards the animated show. Debuting almost two decades ago, the classic story of a mystical chosen one with the power of all four elements tasked with saving the world from a century-long war has taken on mythic proportions in the time since. And, not surprisingly, such acclaim has stacked the odds against any adaptation, whether it be M. Night Shyamalan's doomed feature film from 2010 or Netflix's attempt to bring the series back to life in live action.
The results have been mixed, as I laid out in my review for /Film, but that's really only scratching the surface. There are several factors behind the Netflix show's highs and lows alike,...
