The MTV Movie & TV Awards is taking another break. Variety has confirmed that the event, which would have normally taken place around this time of year, will instead sit 2024 out — with an eye toward returning next year, perhaps in a different, “reimagined” format.
It’s been a bumpy decade for the MTV Movie & TV Awards, which first began in 1992 (as the MTV Movie Awards). Last’s year’s event was forced to pivot to a pre-taped clip show in light of the Hollywood writers’ strike, as host Drew Barrymore bowed out and the WGA announced plans to picket the ceremony.
Meanwhile, in 2020, the MTV Movie & TV Awards also didn’t take place, due in part to the Covid-19 pandemic, but also because the network had planned to move the franchise (long a spring/early summer staple) to December. Ultimately, instead of an awards show, MTV ran a “MTV Movie & TV...

After her contentious departure from the Scream film series, Melissa Barrera, a former star of the franchise, recently shared that she is ready to move on. With her sights set on bigger career goals, the actress considers her departure to have been a minor “hiccup”.
In an interview with Collider, Barrera discussed her goals for the future after her tenure in the Scream franchise late last year. Barrera considers it to be a huge deal, given the numerous challenges he has encountered in the industry this year.
Melissa Barrera and Jenna Ortega in Scream VI
The sixth Scream movie, which is co-directed by Tyler Gillet and Matt Bettinelli-Olpin, follows Sam and Jenna Ortega as they pursue Ghostface through New York City. As a result of the movie’s box office success, Scream 7’s development was confirmed. It seems that fans have seen the last of Barrera’s character, though,...

It might have seemed at one point that, like the Tower of London's raven tradition, the Scream franchise could not stand without stalwarts Neve Campbell and Courteney Cox. But last year's Scream VI did well enough without Campbell (who opted to pass due to an insultingly low salary offer). Now, though, following a wave of issues and director changes, the seventh entry is most certainly headed in a nostalgic direction, with Campbell back and now Cox in talks to similarly return.
The Friends alumnus has, of course, appeared in every Scream outing to date as ambitious journalist Gale Weathers. This new movie marks the franchise getting (some of) the old band back together, as Kevin Williamson, who wrote the first film and a couple of other original entries, is stepping up to direct.

Another “Scream” franchise Og is getting back on board for “Scream 7.”
Variety reports that Courteney Cox, who has played journalist Gale Weathers in every “Scream” movie, will reprise her role in the upcoming seventh installment. Cox is the only performer to appear in every “Scream” movie, and the only actress to play the same horror movie character in six films, a record she’ll be extending with “Scream 7.”
She’ll be joining Neve Campbell, who is returning to the “Scream” franchise as final girl Sidney Prescott after sitting out “Scream VI” over a pay dispute. “Scream” franchise creator Kevin Williamson is also getting involved again, taking over as director of “Scream 7.” He wrote the first, second, and fourth “Scream” movies and executive-produced the 2022 reboot “Scream” and its sequel “Scream VI.”

Courteney Cox may be answering the Scream call one again, with sources saying the actor is in talks for the upcoming Scream VII.
Cox originated the role of reporter Gale Weathers in 1996’s Scream, and has appeared in its five sequels. The return of Cox adds another jolt to the project, which has been revamped following the departure of star Jenna Ortega, the firing of actor Melissa Barrera and the exit of director Christopher Landon last year. Spyglass has assembled a new iteration of the film, with Scream franchise creator Kevin Williamson stepping into the director’s chair and original star Neve Campbell agreeing to return after sitting out the previous installment over a salary dispute.

Activity is heating up on the Scream front, as Courteney Cox is now in talks to return as reporter Gale Weathers, reprising the role she’s held since the first installment, sources confirmed to Deadline.
Franchise rights holder and producer Spyglass declined comment. The news comes following word that original cast member Neve Campbell will be back as final girl Sidney Prescott in the new, currently untitled film, having previously exited Scream VI amid a pay dispute.
Scream creator and scribe Kevin Williamson is on board to direct, following Christopher Landon’s exit late last year, in his first outing behind the camera for the franchise. Ghostface will return in Scream 7 for Paramount and Spyglass, and Variety reports this week that franchise mainstay Courteney Cox is in talks to return as Gale Weathers.
Cox’s Gale Weathers has been part of the franchise since the very beginning, with Cox starring in every single installment in the franchise to date. While Dewey Riley was killed off in the fifth installment, Gale just keeps on surviving, most recently beating the odds in Scream VI. How many more massacres can Gale manage to survive? Is her number finally coming up?
It was recently announced that Neve Campbell will also return in Scream 7, with Campbell herself revealing that she’ll be back as Sidney Prescott in the upcoming Spyglass sequel.
Additionally, original Scream scribe Kevin Williamson will Direct the film.
Williamson recently wrote on Instagram, “It’s been nearly 30 years since my very first script, ‘Scream,’ was directed by the legendary Wes Craven.

Not long ago, we reported that the future is looking a lot brighter for the upcoming Scream 7 movie, with Neve Campbell confirming her return as Sydney Prescott despite pay-related issues with the production, as well as Kevin Williamson, who wrote the original movies, coming to direct the movie. Sure, the previous movie’s stars, including Jenna Ortega, left the project, but it seems that the production is heating up for a bombastic, nostalgia-filled sequel based on the rumors we have.
Namely, industry insider Daniel Richtman (@DanielRPK) recently reported rumors that two major stars might be returning for the upcoming sequel, which is more than great if you ask us. The first name is that of Courtney Cox, who is supposedly returning as Gale Weathers for Scream 7. And while this is certainly great news, the return of Cox’s character was more or less expected, so this doesn’t...

Consider this the latest twist -- or, more accurately, a pair of twists -- in the "Scream" franchise's shock-filled history. After the 2022 film brought back the franchise in style with the fifth well-received entry (both among critics and especially at the box office), reuniting the original trio while introducing a new cast of younger characters led by Melissa Barrera, the series seemed to be right on track. That trajectory hit a bit of a snag when reports came out about Spyglass lowballing icon Neve Campbell for "Scream 6," followed swiftly by the controversial decision to fire new franchise lead Barrera from the seventh "Scream" film after her vocal support for Palestine in a series of social media posts, not to mention co-star Jenna Ortega's decision to drop out altogether.
Though many assumed that the latest installment would be left for dead, however, the series looks like it's coming back...

Matthew Vaughn’s Argylle seems to have spilt audiences and critics all over the world. From being branded as over-the-top fun, to the worst film of the year. While it’s neither of them, at times it can be argued that it’s fallen into each argument.
Bryce Dallas Howard plays Elly Conway, an author who has written a series of best-selling spy novels, all of which focus on the heroic action hero, Argylle. We first see agent Argylle in action, played by Henry Cavill, who has, unfortunately, been given the worst haircut ever put to screen. Sporting his dreadful haircut he’s on a mission, one that is filled with over-the-top dialogue and action, and some of the worst CGI you’re likely to see,...

The fifth installment of the "Scream" franchise was a huge shakeup, with the filmmaking collective known as Radio Silence ("Ready or Not") taking the reins from the legendary Wes Craven and Kevin Williamson. Directors Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett had an impossible task ahead of them — marrying the previous four films featuring Sidney Prescott (Neve Campbell), Gale Weathers (Courteney Cox), and Dewey Reilly (David Arquette) with a brand new cast of characters now known as the "Core Four," comprised of Sam Carpenter (Melissa Barrera), Tara Carpenter (Jenna Ortega), Mindy Meeks-Martin (Jasmin Savoy Brown), and Chad Meeks-Martin (Mason Gooding).
"Scream VI" was a bit of a reset for the series, with Neve Campbell leaving the franchise because, as she explained, "I did not feel that what I was being offered equated to the value that I bring to this franchise, and have brought to this franchise, for 25 years." With...

Although her character, franchise heroine Sidney Prescott, was originally included in the script for Scream VI (watch it Here), Neve Campbell ended up passing on the offer to reprise the role for that film due to a pay dispute. Soon after the film was released, her Scream co-star Skeet Ulrich (who makes brief appearances in the 2022 Scream and Scream VI) said Campbell loved what they did with the latest sequel… but while doing a Q&a at the 2023 Monster-Mania Con, Campbell revealed that she only recently watched the film. It took her longer than we thought to see it, but her reaction was a positive one in the end.
Campbell told the Monster-Mania crowd (with thanks to Coming Soon for the transcription), “I hadn’t watched it until two weeks ago. It took me a minute, I don’t know why. I actually thought they did a really good job.

The more we head into this new generation of "Scream" films, the more we see the parallels to the original trilogy. Like "Scream 2," "Scream 6" was rushed into production immediately after the success of its predecessor, with mixed results. Both Screams 2 and 6 gave us some of the most exciting and suspenseful chase sequences of the whole series, but they also gave us two messy final acts, both of which probably could've been polished over script-wise if the production had been given a little more time.
The parallels don't stop there: Just like the longer gap between Screams 2 and 3, "Scream 7" is also set to take much longer to release in theaters than its predecessor. It'll also experience a few creative changes behind the scenes, as well as some uncertainty over which major cast members are coming back. In the third movie's case, this ended up in one of...

Last night saw the broadcast of the 2023 MTV Movie & TV Awards. However, it would not be a usual broadcast with a live taping. Due to the current unrest of the Writer’s Guild strike, many attendees had chosen not to participate in solidarity with the ongoing protest. This prompted the once music-centric channel to air a pre-taped special.
Bruce Gillmer, the President of programming at Paramount Global and EP on the award show, stated, “As we carefully navigate how best to deliver the fan first awards’ show we envisioned that our team has worked so hard to create, we’re pivoting away from a live event that still enables us to produce a memorable night full of exclusive sneak peeks, irreverent categories our audience has come to expect, and countless moments that will both surprise and delight as we honor the best of film and TV over the past year.

Scream VI was named best movie on Sunday night at the 2023 MTV Movie & TV Awards, which pivoted at the last minute from live to pretaped due to the writers strike,
The film also won best fight for Courteney Cox (as Gale Weathers) and the killer Ghostface, the latter of whom accepted both awards via pretaped video.
Accepting best movie, Ghostface quipped that there is finally an answer to the question, “What is your favorite scary movie?” — a reference to a classic line of dialogue from the franchise.
The Last of Us also was a big winner, taking three awards, including best show. Star Pedro Pascal was named best hero, while he and Bella Ramsey also were named best duo. Stranger Things won two awards.
The show was held amid the ongoing writers strike, which led host Drew Barrymore to drop out in a show of support for the striking scribes.

The MTV Movie and TV Awards crowned its 2023 winners on Sunday night sans its planned host, Drew Barrymore, who, ironically, took home the prize for Best Host for “The Drew Barrymore Show” — and accepted it live from her bathroom.
Jennifer Coolidge was thrilled to receive the Comedic Genius Award. “It’s even more special because I was in The Groundlings with Melissa McCarthy and Will Ferrell, so now I can be in the club with them and Sacha Baron Cohen and Kevin Hart and Jack Black,” she said in a clip. “My God, what a fun night!”

While the 2023 MTV Movie & TV Awards weren't held live on May 7, some of Hollywood's biggest stars still got their moment during the prerecorded show. In the lead-up to Sunday, the ceremony planned for Barker Hangar in Los Angeles was scrapped amid the Writers Guild of America strike. Host Drew Barrymore stepped back from the gig in support of the striking writers, and the decision to do without a red carpet closely followed. Heading into the weekend, it was confirmed that the event would not be held in its original form.
Still, big names accepted their popcorn trophies through video clips, including Tom Cruise, who was piloting a plane while expressing his gratitude for his win for best performance in a movie for "Top Gun: Maverick."

The 2023 MTV Movie & TV Awards went on with a pretaped ceremony amid the writers strike and talent pulling out in support of the movement.
Drew Barrymore dropped out of hosting duties earlier this week and pledged to return next year. Barrymore had already pretaped the opening segment of the show where she was inserted in scenes from films like Cocaine Bear, M3GAN, and Top Gun: Maverick, as well as TV shows like The White Lotus, all while dressed as her Never Been Kissed character Josie Gellar.
Pedro Pascal took the first golden popcorn trophy of the night for his role in The Last of Us.
“I wish we could all be together so that I could look into your eyes and tell you that all the young people in the world are my heroes and I wouldn’t be here if it weren’t for you,” he said in his acceptance speech.

The MTV Movie & TV Awards faced a series of roadblocks this year due to the ongoing Writers Guild of America strike. This post contains spoilers for "Scream VI," "Scream 2," and "Yellowjackets."
Though she's been on the radar of HBO viewers since her recurring role on "The Leftovers" in the mid-2010s, Jasmin Savoy Brown has developed something of a scream queen reputation in the 2020s. That's not just because she's one of the newly christened "Core Four" in the "Scream" requel series, either. Brown starred in another slasher film, "Sound of Violence," in 2021, and since last year, she's been among the core of a different four on Showtime's "Yellowjackets," where her cannibalistic character grows up to be a politician who sacrifices the family dog on an altar in her basement.
If that's not horror, it's at least horror-adjacent. For Brown, it's all in a day's acting work -- but believe it or not, she didn't always have designs on the horror genre, despite her résumé leading up to this year's...

As a famous character from another long-running cinematic franchise once said, "No one's ever really gone." That axiom goes double for horror franchises, whether you're talking about a fierce survivor or a vicious killer. The return of the latter type of character is such a cliche that the original "Scream" from 1996 made explicit reference to it during its finale. Before Billy Loomis (Skeet Ulrich) could "come back to life for one last scare," as film nerd Randy Meeks (Jamie Kennedy) warned, Sidney Prescott (Neve Campbell) shot him in the head. "Not in my movie," she intoned, signifying once again that "Scream" knew the rules and could either play by them or break them.
After series director Wes Craven passed away in 2015, the "Scream" franchise has been taken over by the filmmakers collectively known as Radio Silence (directors Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett and producer Chad Villella) to much praise and success.

If it's worth screaming about once, then it's worth doing so again. But this time, scream from the comfort of your own home.
Paramount first restarted their crown jewel horror franchise from original director Wes Craven with last year's "Scream," the annoyingly-titled "requel" movie that brought back the classic trio of Neve Campbell's Sidney Prescott, Courteney Cox's Gale Weathers, and David Arquette's Dewey Riley to join forces with a new and younger cast led by Melissa Barrera, Jenna Ortega, Jasmin Savoy Brown, and Mason Gooding. The immediate and resounding success inevitably put the sequel on the fast track, which premiered earlier this year with similar box office results. Unfortunately, the critical reaction was slightly more mixed this time around, as /Film's Chris Evangelista reviewed "Scream 6" and called it "... the most disappointing entry since 'Scream 3.'"

We never expected to see characters like Kirby Reed and Billy Loomis make their return to the Scream franchise, but both Scream 2022 and Scream VI have proven that nothing is ever off the table when it comes to this particular slasher saga. Billy appeared in both films in visions experienced by his daughter, while Scream VI literally brought Kirby back to life.
So who’s next? Well, Drew Barrymore recently joked that Casey Becker could theoretically still be alive out there somewhere, and now Parker Posey is expressing similar sentiments about her character from Scream 3. Posey memorably played Jennifer Jolie in Craven’s third movie, the actress playing Gale Weathers in the Stab movies.
As Jenn Adams wrote here on Bloody Disgusting back in March, “The flaky actress stars as Gale Weathers in the parody films and forms a hilarious partnership with her real-life counterpart when her co-stars begin to die.

The “Scream” franchise is at an all-time high right now, with March’s “Scream VI” grossing $106 million and counting at the domestic box office to become the series’ top-grossing film. No wonder former cast members like Drew Barrymore and Parker Posey are eager to return.
Posey, who has been making the press rounds in support of her role in Ari Aster’s “Beau Is Afraid,” told ComicBook.com that she’s interested in reprising the role of Jennifer Jolie from 2000’s “Scream 3.” Jennifer was the actor playing Gale Weathers (Courteney Cox) in the “Stab” franchise. She was killed by Ghostface, but that didn’t stop Posey from recently pitching her return to the “Scream” team.
“Well, I did an interview for Wnyc Radio, like three weeks ago, for the play I was doing. And they said, ‘Well, there’s some people here that want to say hi.’ And it was the ‘Scream’ team,...

Two weeks ago, Scream VI (read our review Here) surpassed the worldwide box office total of last year’s Scream movie, leaving its $139 million haul in the dust. As of right now, Scream VI has pulled in $162,210,554 worldwide… and it has reached another milestone. Scream VI crossed the $100 million mark domestically this past weekend, and has now become the highest-grossing entry in the entire franchise at the domestic box office. Until now, the original Scream – released back in 1996 – had been sitting in the top spot with $103 million. Now Scream VI is at the top with $104,410,554 and counting. Complex lists the domestic box office for previous entries: “Scream 2 earned $101 million in 1997, Scream 3 made $89 million in 2000, Scream 4 pulled in just $38 million in 2011, and Scream (2022) ended its domestic run at $81.6 million.”

Last year, the Scream franchise returned the big screen after an eleven year absence – and last year’s Scream was such a hit, earning almost $139 million at the global box office on a budget of $24 million, that Paramount Pictures and Spyglass Media quickly greenlit another sequel. Scream VI (read our review Here) had a slightly higher budget, in the range of $35 million, but it’s also turning out to be an even bigger box office success than its predecessor. Scream VI‘s global box office total currently stands at $139.2 million. In just over two weeks of release, it has surpassed Scream 2022’s box office. If you’re wondering if Campbell is feeling any negativity about the Scream movie they made without her, her Scream co-star Skeet Ulrich – who returns for hallucinatory appearances in Scream 2022 and Scream VI – is here to assure you that she doesn’t. In fact, Ulrich said Campbell “loved” the new movie.
Speaking with People, Ulrich said he had talked to Campbell about Scream VI when they were both at a recent convention. He told them, “She loves it; she loves what we’ve done.
