The unfortunate circumstances surrounding Alec Baldwin’s Western, Rust, hadn’t deterred the production from continuing. After the immensely tragic events of the accidental killing of the movie’s former Director of Photography, Halyna Hutchins, filming would inevitably come to a halt in the wake of an investigation. The production resumed filming 18 months after a messy legal process since the star, Alec Baldwin, had discharged a faulty prop gun that had become legitimately loaded. Deadline has now revealed an exclusive first look at the film with newly released images.
According to Deadline, “Rust is based on a story developed by [writer/director] Joel Souza and Baldwin: A 13-year-old boy, left to fend for himself and his younger brother following the death of their parents in 1880s Kansas, is taken on a violent, harrowing journey to old Mexico by his long-estranged grandfather after he’s sentenced to hang for the accidental killing of a local rancher.

Exclusive: The first images from writer-director Joel Souza’s Western Rust starring Alec Baldwin have emerged. Deadline has the first look.
Late cinematographer Halyna Hutchins’ visual style can be seen in two of the photos: the one of actress Frances Fisher in the doorway, and one of the lone rider to the right of the screen.
See the first-look photos below.
The other three photographs are the work of Dp Bianca Cline, who took over for Hutchins when the production resumed in April 2023 at the Yellowstone Film Ranch in Montana. The restart came 18 months after Hutchins was killed by a bullet from a prop gun held by Baldwin that discharged during rehearsals on Rust‘s New Mexico set.

Rust armorer Hannah Gutierrez-Reed may be caught white-handed, as prosecutors are claiming that Reed was in possession of cocaine and then allegedly “handed off the drugs after returning from her initial police interview.”
As per the prosecutors’ statement against the Rust armorer, “The circumstances of the transfer of evidence strongly support the charge that the defendant transferred the cocaine to avoid prosecution and prevent law enforcement from obtaining highly inculpatory evidence directly related the defendant’s handling of the firearm and the circumstances of the fatal shooting of Halyna Hutchins.” As the witness hopes to remain anonymous, representatives for Hannah Gutierrez-Reed have jumped on the request, saying, “The state wants to publish salacious allegations about Ms. Gutierrez Reed in a secret procedure, which is not condoned by the rules or constitution…If the state really believes these allegations, why the secrecy?”

Even as the western Rust — which shut down in 2021 following the accidental shooting death of cinematographer Halyna Hutchins — concluded production last month, more details are emerging from that tragic day. In a new filing, prosecutors are accusing the movie’s armorer, Hannah Gutierrez-Reed, of potentially being hungover when the incident occurred.
As per prosecutors regarding the Rust shooting, “It is likely that Defendant Gutierrez was hung over when she inserted a live bullet into a gun that she knew was going to be used at some point by an actor while filming a shooting scene with other actors and crew members.” It continues, “Her reckless failure resulted in the senseless death of another human being…All Defendant Gutierrez needed to do was shake every bullet and make sure it rattled before putting it in the gun — she failed and killed someone.”
This claim stems from Hannah Gutierrez-Reed allegedly having a...

The family of Halyna Hutchins, the cinematographer who died of a gunshot wound on the set of the movie Rust, has reached a settlement with actor Alec Baldwin and the film’s producers, according to Krqe. Matthew Hutchins, Halyna’s husband, filed a civil lawsuit on behalf of the couple’s 10-year-old son, Andros, in Feb. 2022.
After about a year of speculation on the suit’s status and about a month after prosecutors dropped criminal manslaughter charges against Baldwin, the Santa Fe District Court approved the settlement, Krqe reported Thursday.

Filming on Rust, the upcoming western film starring Alec Baldwin, has wrapped after nearly two full years. Production had initially planned to have the film completed in 21 days, but on the 12th day of shooting, cinematographer Halyna Hutchins was fatally shot on set and director Joel Souza was injured after Baldwin discharged a prop gun with a live round. Following a lengthy break and a slew of lawsuits surrounding the incident, the film resumed production in April. Now, in a recent Instagram post, the actor described finally completing the film...

“Rust” has officially restarted production in Montana, a year and a half after the film’s cinematographer, Halyna Hutchins, was killed when a prop gun held by star Alec Baldwin discharged.
According to The New York Times‘ Julia Jacobs, who visited the movie’s set on Yellowstone Film Ranch, the production isn’t taking any chances this time around, as real guns are not allowed on the premises.
“I’ve said it, and I’m going to say it every single time: There are no weapons on set,” first assistant director Gerard Dinardi told the crew, according to the Times. “There is nothing that fires. There are a lot of facsimiles of weapons, from rubber to replicas.”

The production has touted the addition of new crew members including Safety Officers Gary Jensen and Paul Jordan (Tenet Production Safety), EP/LP Stephen Marinaccio (Jack Ryan), and Production Designer Christine Brandt (Card Counter).
Returning Rust filmmaker Joel Souza, who was injured in the shoulder from the discharged prop gun that Baldwin was holding back in October 2021, said in statement “Though bittersweet, I am grateful that a brilliant and dedicated new production team is joining former cast and crew to complete what Halyna and I started. My every effort on this film will be devoted to honoring Halyna’s legacy and making her proud.

Alec Baldwin will no longer face charges in the accidental shooting death of Rust cinematographer Halyna Hutchins, the actor’s lawyers tell Rolling Stone.
“We are pleased with the decision to dismiss the case against Alec Baldwin and we encourage a proper investigation into the facts and circumstances of this tragic accident,” said Luke Nikas and Alex Spiro.
A rep for the First Judicial District Attorney’s office in New Mexico did not immediately return Rolling Stone’s request for comment, nor did the two special prosecutors overseeing the case.

“Rust” will resume production Thursday in Montana, with work beginning 18 months after actor Alec Baldwin fired a live round which killed cinematographer Halyna Hutchins while filming in New Mexico. Baldwin will return to the set just two weeks before the start of a court hearing in New Mexico to decide whether he will stand trial for a felony charge of involuntary manslaughter over the October 2021 incident.
Melina Spadone, an attorney for Rust Movie Productions, affirmed that filming would resume at Montana’s Yellowstone Film Ranch set. Baldwin settled a lawsuit this past October with the late Hutchins’ husband, Matt Hutchins, which involved filming restarting with the same actors and with Joel Souza remaining in the director’s chair.

Alec Baldwin’s Western film Rust is set to begin filming again this week, according to a representative for the production company. Rust Move Productions attorney Melina Spadone said work on the movie will resume today, 18 months after Baldwin fatally shot cinematographer Halyna Hutchins on set.
Baldwin will continue his involvement as an actor and co-producer. Montana’s Yellowstone Film Ranch will be used instead of the original location in New Mexico, where the shooting took place. Earlier this year, it was announced that Bianca Cline will take over as cinematographer.

Three “Rust” crew members sued Alec Baldwin and the film’s producers on Monday, alleging they suffered symptoms of insomnia, post-traumatic stress disorder, and anxiety stemming from the fatal shooting of the film’s cinematographer, Halyna Hutchins, according to a lawsuit obtained by Et.
The three crew members claim they were in the church building during filming, when Baldwin’s gun went off, striking Hutchins and director Joel Souza. Baldwin, who denied pulling the trigger, has been charged with two counts of involuntary manslaughter after the gun he was holding discharged, killing Hutchins and wounding director Souza on the Western film set in New Mexico.

The producers of Rust have settled a citation from a New Mexico safety agency for numerous violations of safety protocols on the set of the low-budget western.
The New Mexico Occupational Health and Safety Bureau found in April that the movie’s producers knew that firearm safety procedures weren’t being followed on-set and demonstrated a “plain indifference’ to the welfare of cast and crew by failing to train crew on how to properly handle firearms and introducing live ammunition onto the set, among other things. It issued the highest level citation and maximum fine allowed by state law of $136,793.
Under the settlement announced on Friday, which has to be approved, the citation is downgraded from a “willful-serious” violation to “serious.” The production will pay a reduced civil penalty of $100,000.

The filming of Rust will be concluded a year and a half after the death of its cinematographer, Halyna Hutchins, producers announced on Wednesday (22 February).

Rust is set to finish filming at Yellowstone Film Ranch in Montana this spring, the movie’s producers announced on Wednesday.
The production will include star and producer Alec Baldwin, who’s facing a charge of involuntary manslaughter for his role in the death of cinematographer Halyna Hutchins. It will also feature a mix of new and old crew, with Bianca Cline (Marcel the Shell With Shoes On, American Horror Story) joining in Hutchins’ place.
The announcement follows New Mexico prosecutors on Monday dropping gun enhancement charges against Baldwin and armorer Hannah Gutierrez-Reed. Lawyers for Baldwin had argued that their client was unconstitutionally charged with violating a recently amended firearm enhancement statute that didn’t exist at the time of the incident. He now faces a maximum sentence of 18 months in prison instead of six and a half years if convicted.

“Rust” is finally set to resume filming, with producers announcing Wednesday that production would pick up on the Alec Baldwin movie later this spring in Montana on the Yellowstone Film Ranch.
Though Taylor Sheridan’s “Yellowstone” also films (elsewhere) in Montana, Yellowstone Film Ranch is home to Western films like Nicolas Cage’s “The Old Way” and “Murder at Yellowstone City,” and not the smash-hit Paramount Network series.
Producers have been talking for months about plans to finally finish filming on “Rust,” which was halted in the wake of the fatal October 2021 accident involving cinematographer Halyna Hutchins. But it remained a question where and when producers could pick work back up — and who would return.
Earlier this month, producers announced that Bianca Cline, who worked as the cinematographer on “Marcel the Shell With Shoes On,” would replace Hutchins as the film’s Dp. The film’s director Joel Souza, who...

Alec Baldwin will no longer be facing the possibility of five years in prison for his role in the accidental death of "Rust" cinematographer Halyna Hutchins. Per ABC, the Santa Fe District Attorney's Office announced on Monday that the firearm enhancement charge previously placed on Baldwin and armorer Hannah Gutierrez-Reed has been dropped, although their initial charges of involuntary manslaughter are still in effect. This means that the two defendants, who were working on the set of "Rust" during the incident, are not facing the potential minimum sentence of five years. However, if convicted of their counts of involuntary manslaughter, they could face up to 18 months in prison and a 5,000 fine each.
The Santa Fe District Attorney's Office did not hold back on what caused this significant charge to be dropped. According to spokeswoman Heather Brewer in the statement, the decision was made to avoid "further litigious distractions" from Baldwin's legal team.

Rust, the Western starring Alec Baldwin struck by tragedy when cinematographer Halyna Hutchins was fatally shot on set, will resume production this spring. A documentary about Hutchins will be made alongside the film.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, several members of the original Rust crew will return to complete the production, including director Joel Souza, who was also injured during the shooting. There will be some new faces joining the production: Bianca Cline (Marcel the Shell with Shoes On) will be the film’s new cinematographer, and she plans to donate her salary to charity.
The production resumes after the crew reached a settlement with Hutchin’s widower, Matthew Hutchins, who now serves as executive producer. The agreement also offers Hutchins and the couple’s son an insurance payout, as well as a portion of Rust’s profits.
When production began in 2021, Rust employed several non-union crew members. Now, the...

Rust, the embattled Western on which cinematographer Halyna Hutchins was shot and killed by a prop gun fired by Alec Baldwin on October 2021, is aiming for a Spring return to production. Despite the project’s ongoing legal battles, Rust Movie Productions is about to welcome cinematographer Bianca Cline to the set. Cline’s recent work on Marcel the Shell With Shoes On turned plenty of heads upon release, paving the way for Cline to accept high-profile work. Rust remains in the shadow of Hutchins’ tragic death. Still, Rust is one of the most talked-about movies in production. People say all press is good, but that doesn’t necessarily apply to Baldwin’s Rust movie.
To combat the ill-tidings of Rust resuming production, the film’s producers said Cline would donate her salary to charity in honor of the dearly departed Hutchins.
Rust director Joel Saouza and original crew members will also return to the set.

One of the most controversial and high-profile Hollywood productions in recent memory is in the news again. The ill-fated "Rust" movie made headlines all across the industry due to the accidental shooting death of cinematographer Halyna Hutchins in October 2021, which has since led to actor Alec Baldwin facing criminal charges of manslaughter. Now, filming will reportedly pick up once again this spring after a lengthy hiatus.
Details come courtesy of The Hollywood Reporter, revealing that the filmmakers intend to restart production in the hopes of finishing the film alongside both new crew members and old ones -- including, by all accounts, Baldwin himself. This comes after conflicting reports in past months indicating that the picture was unlikely to be completed at all. However, the subsequent settling of a wrongful death lawsuit between Hutchins' family and Rust Movie Productions helped pave the way for production to resume eventually. As part of the deal,...

A24’s acclaimed stop-motion/live-action hybrid “Marcel the Shell with Shoes On” could be the wild card in the animated feature Oscar race — going up against such early favorites as Pixar’s “Turning Red,” Disney’s “Strange World,” and Netflix’s two stop-motion behemoths: “Guillermo del Toro’s Pinocchio” and Henry Selick’s “Wendell & Wild” (the latter being the lone animated feature premiering at TIFF).
And why not? The feature debut from director Dean Fleischer Camp (adapting a series of shorts he created with “Marcel” star Jenny Slate), has been embraced by critics for its charm, wit, inventive stop-motion, and its adorable breakout star. The one-inch anthropomorphic shell (voiced by Slate) lives with his grandmother Connie (Isabella Rossellini) and develops a friendship with doc filmmaker Dean (Fleischer Camp), who moves in and films Marcel’s daily activities, which go viral. There’s a saying that a movie is made three times: once when it’s written, once when it’s shot and once when it’s edited. To create the new A24 release Marcel the Shell with Shoes On, that maxim had to expand to accommodate an additional creative cycle. Marcel, the story of a chatty one-inch tall seashell searching for his family, was in essence shot twice. First, cinematographer Bianca Cline captured the live-action components, leaving a Marcel-sized space in the compositions. Months later, armed with copious notes to match lighting, lensing, focus, etc., stop motion director of photography Eric Adkins brought Marcel […]

This review of “Marcel the Shell With Shoes On” was first published Sept. 5, 2021, after its premiere at the Telluride Film Festival.
After so much bad news over the past – oh, it’s been awhile – many viewers might be in the mood for entertainment that’s a little sweeter, gentler and kinder. Enter the adorable and effortlessly charming Marcel the Shell (Jenny Slate), a one-eyed, child-like anthropomorphic shell living in an Airbnb with his grandmother, Connie (Isabella Rossellini).
They are the only two shells remaining in the home after a devastating upheaval tore their community away from them when the couple (Rosa Salazar and Thomas Mann) who lived at the house split up, accidentally carrying off Marcel’s family and friends. But these two tiny creatures have since learned to survive, making the best of their microscopic world through creative means.
Many wonders and punchlines stem from their makeshift solutions, and...
