More than 1,000 Jewish creatives, executives and Hollywood professionals have signed an open letter denouncing Jonathan Glazer’s “The Zone of Interest” Oscar speech.
The list of co-signees provided to Variety Monday morning covers a broad swath of the industry including actors, executives, creators (Amy Sherman-Palladino), directors, producers and representatives. About 500 more individuals have added their names to the nearly 500 who signed on when the open letter was first published.
The group’s statement says: “We refute our Jewishness being hijacked for the purpose of drawing a moral equivalence between a Nazi regime that sought to exterminate a race of people, and an Israeli nation that seeks to avert its own extermination.”
Glazer declined to comment.
With such high-profile co-signees as Jennifer Jason Leigh, “La La Land” producer Gary Gilbert and “The Americans” creators Joel Fields and Joe Weisberg, the statement adds, “The use of words like ‘occupation’ to describe an...

The Oscar race for animated short reflects the zeitgeist and the ascendance of streaming. And all five nominees explore the turmoil of a divided country and world, where the need for unity is the best salvation for attaining happiness and closure.
The favorite is Netflix’s first animated short, “If Anything Happens I Love You,” about a grieving mother and father visited by shadows of themselves and their deceased young daughter (who was the victim of a school shooting). The monochromatic, hand-drawn short, directed by Will McCormack (who wrote the original “Toy Story 4” script with Rashida Jones) and Michael Govier (“Conan”), boasts an illustrated style that represents haunting memories, bolstered by an all-female animation team supervised by CalArts graduate Youngran Nho. Laura Dern executive produced the short and Maryann Garger (“The Lego Ninjago Movie”) produced with Gary Gilbert (“La La Land”), Gerald Chamales (“The Irishman”), and Govier.

Laura Dern on Gun Safety and How Netflix’s Animated ‘If Anything Happens I Love You’ Addresses Grief
Executive producer Laura Dern wanted to leap on board when she and producing partner Jayme Lemons (also an executive producer), had the chance to support the animated short, “If Anything Happens I Love You.”
The story follows the aftermath of tragedy as parents grieve the loss of a child and through a dialogue-free narrative, tracks them as they grapple with their emotional void.
Dern spoke with Variety about how the animation team was all-female. She also talks about partnering with the non-profit organization Everytown for Gun Safety, and why it was important for her to be a part of the narrative for the short which drops on Netflix Nov. 20.
Why was it important for you, as an executive producer to tell this story?

Netflix has acquired its first animated shorts for Oscar consideration. There are three: “If Anything Happens I Love You,” an elegy about grief following a school shooting, directed by Will McCormack (who wrote the original “Toy Story 4” script with Rashida Jones) and Michael Govier (“Conan”); “Canvas,” about a Black painter who seeks to rekindle his artistic passion after the passing of his wife, directed by former Pixar animator Frank E. Abney III (“Soul”); and “Cops and Robbers,” directed by Arnon Manor (indie web series “Mondays”) and Timothy Ware-Hill (“Kinky Boots” national tour), inspired by Ware-Hill’s poem about the racially motivated murder of Ahmaud Arbery earlier this year in Georgia.

Whiplash. Back in 2011, Chazelle was just a New York transplant with Hollywood hopes of creating a modern musical with original music — a commercially risky proposition that seemed overly ambitious for a young director with only one movie (2009's Guy and Madeline on a Park Bench) under his belt. But Berger, Horowitz and fellow producers Marc Platt and Gary Gilbert stuck with Chazelle and his dream, which eventually became La La Land, starring Emma Stone as...

Oscar contenders can be the auteur, the veteran, the journeyman who’s elevated his craft. However, perhaps the most exciting breed is the Breakout, and that’s Damien Chazelle.
He’s not a rookie. His second feature, “Whiplash” (Sony Pictures Classics), scored a shocking five nominations including Best Picture, Adapted Screenplay (from his short), Editing, Sound Mixing, and a win for Supporting Actor J.K. Simmons.
However, following that breakout success is often a tall order for young directors, whose celebration is often followed by a morass of dealmaking and development hell.
That wasn’t Chazelle’s fate. With critically hailed fall festival hit “La La Land” (Lionsgate, December 9), Chazelle magically modernizes the colorful swirl of Jacques Demy French song-and-dance musicals “The Umbrellas of Cherbourg” and “Les Desmoiselles de Rochefort” along with backstage showbiz romantic musicals such as “New York, New York” or Gene Kelly-starrer “Singin’ in the Rain.” In “La La Land,...

One of my Top 10 favorite films of 2014 was Whiplash, the electric and intense first feature from young filmmaker Damien Chazelle. The film ended up getting five Oscar nominations, with three wins including actor J.K. Simmons for his performance as R.J. Fletcher. It's no surprise that the actor and director are reteaming for another film. THR reports that Simmons has signed on to star again in La La Land, the new film from Damien Chazelle. Already set to star are Ryan Gosling and Emma Stone. La La Land is a modern Hollywood musical that follows a jazz pianist who falls for an aspiring actress, but they run into troubles. In addition to the cast already announced, Jessica Rothe, Sonoya Mizuno and Callie Hernandez will play Stone's three roommates. Simmons will play a character called "Boss." The film is being produced by Fred Berger, Gary Gilbert, Jordan Horowitz and Marc Platt.

Matthew Weiner of Mad Men fame is coming you way with his feature film writing/directing debut, Are You Here. The bizarre-sounding story is brought to you with a cast you might expect isn’t difficult for someone with Mad Men under his belt to get into his film.
Ben (Zach Galifianakis) inherits a sizable fortune when his father dies, despite the fact that Ben lives off-the-grid and had been estranged from his father. Steve Dalls (Owen Wilson), a womanizer and local television personality, is a friend of Ben’s, and decides to join up with Ben to fight the legal battle brought by Ben’s sister (Amy Poehler), but there’s a lot more going on than that. Check the trailer below for more of an idea of the ins and outs of friendship that are explored in this one.

There was a time when two veteran straight actors such as John Lithgow and Alfred Molina, taking on the roles of a gay couple and their subsequent travails at married life would have been the tabloid equivalent of shock and awe. It still might raise some eyebrows, but Ira Sachs’ Love Is Strange is a testimony to societal progress in terms of storytelling. Now it will face the box office as the Specialty title platforms this weekend via Sony Classics. A real-life gay marriage takes the spotlight this weekend courtesy of Starz Digital doc To Be Takei about the multi-faceted actor/activist and social media talent who is best known for playing Hikaru Sulu in TV’s original Star Trek. It will be joined by Millennium Entertainment’s Are You Here with Owen Wilson, Zach Galifianakis and Amy Poehler which will open day and date by Mad Men writer Matthew Weiner.

After several cast changes and an eight-year journey to the screen, Matthew Weiner’s feature directorial Are You Here finally made its Hollywood premiere last night at the Arclight on Sunset Blvd. This Friday, Millennium Entertainment will unspool the film, which stars Owen Wilson, Zach Galifianakis and Amy Poehler, in limited theaters as well as on DVD.
“Like most of what I do, this is a genre-less film,” Weiner told the audience before the projector rolled, “Laugh where you want to laugh.”
Despite his reputation for creating the monumental, award-winning period TV drama Mad Men, Weiner’s uphill battle to get Are You Here made further underscores the challenges of getting adult feature dramas off the ground. With its comedic star wattage cast and a set-up that involves a crazed stoner (Galifianakis) inheriting a farm after his father’s death with his weatherman philandering friend along for the ride (Wilson...

Any readers who have been with us since 2011 (when it topped Kris' Top 10 list and nearly did mine) will know that we at In Contention are paid-up members of Team "Margaret" -- the brilliant, troubled Kenneth Lonergan drama that trickled into theaters three years ago, six years after it began production. Critical acclaim (including a Best Actress win from the London Film Critics' Circle), social-media campaigning and the eventual DVD release of Lonergan's own cut marked a tentatively happy ending for a film plagued by post-production disputes. But its legal problems only ended this year, as producer and financier Gary Gilbert made a request for his lawsuit against Lonergan to be dismissed. The Hollywood Reporter offers a fairly detailed breakdown of the misbegotten case's history. In a nutshell, things kicked off when Fox Searchlight billed Gilbert's company, Camelot Pictures, for $6.2 million in 2008, after accepting Lonergan's already long-delayed edit; when Gilbert didn't pay up,...

As time stands divided against potential, there will be no marching back of the clock to relive the unfulfilled commercial promise of Kenneth Lonergan's Margaret, released in 2011 amid legal intrigue. The film can now be judged on its artistic merits as the lawsuits that dragged in its wake have now been regulated to the past. On Wednesday, film financier Gary Gilbert filed a formal request for dismissal to the once high-profile turf battle. While Hollywood has experienced notable fights throughout the years over final cut, the lawsuits over Margaret were extraordinary by any measure. Here was Longeran with
