Best Actress Oscar nominee Andrea Riseborough (“To Leslie”) recently chatted with Gold Derby’s David Buchanan about what it was like working on the low-budget film about an alcoholic mother, Leslie “Lee” Rowlands, who wins the lottery and spends all of her prize money. She opens up about how “To Leslie” didn’t have “hundreds of millions of dollars” for a proper awards campaign, “and that’s as it should be.”
Amazingly, her team completed this film in just 19 days in Los Angeles. There are few boundaries on public transportation, at least not physical ones. Crammed together in small spaces for oftentimes unexpected lengths of time, people who don’t normally interact are suddenly forced into each others’ orbits. Such is the concept behind Tribeca winner “Materna,” which uses the New York City subway system as a meeting point for four seemingly very different women, all of whom are forced to deal with an unexpected encounter and the impact it has on their lives. At its heart, motherhood and questions of feminine identity burn bright.
The film is the directorial debut of David Gutnik, who is also the editor of several acclaimed features, including Christina Choe’s 2018 Sundance award-winning drama “Nancy.” Gutnik wrote the film alongside two of his stars, Jade Eshete (“Billions” and “High Maintenance”) and Assol Abdullina (in one of her first film roles), and the film also features leading roles...

This The Handmaid’s Tale review contains spoilers.
That ending was earned. Under ordinary circumstances, the un-ironic use of Coldplay’s ‘Fix You’ over a slo-mo reunion scene would result in disciplinary action from the mawkishness police, but The Handmaid’s Tale gets away with it. This drama has been feel-bad for so long, it’s saved up enough feel-good pennies to splurge on moments just like this one: June and Moira, reunited. Drink it in.
The moment was staged by director Christina Choe with dialled-up emotion and zero edge. A silhouetted Moira emerged from the battlefield smoke like a wartime sweetheart as the love song soared. It couldn’t have been played bigger if Moira had swept a fainting June up in her arms and carried her to safety. And you know what? After what these characters have been through, she’d have been welcome to do just that. This show...

Utopia has acquired worldwide rights to David Gutnik’s “Materna” ahead of the film’s in-person debut at this year’s Tribeca Film Festival.
The movie looks at four women, whose lives intersect during an incident on a New York City subway. Kate Lyn Sheil (“She Dies Tomorrow”), Jade Eshete (“Billions”), Lindsay Burdge (“Black Bear”), Assol Abdullina (“First Snow”), Michael Chernus (“Orange Is the New Black”), Rory Culkin (“Castle Rock”) and Sturgill Simpson (the upcoming “Killers of the Flower Moon”) all star. Abdullina and Eshete co-wrote the screenplay with Gutnik.
According to the official logline: “‘Materna’ follows the journeys of four New York women who are isolated by city life, separated by class, politics, race and religion, and yet bound by a shared hunger for identity and connection. With their futures at stake, the characters’ lives are upended by a fateful encounter underground, where their stories of personal transformation become a battle for survival.

Warning: the Handmaid’s tale season 4 episode synopses below contain plot spoilers
The Handmaid’s Tale isn’t the kind of TV show that suits a binge-watch. Its heart-heavy dystopian story about a brutal theocracy that enslaves and rapes fertile women benefits from a little fresh air between episodes. On-screen torture and suffering are best delivered in small doses.
It’s good news then, that after its first three episodes are released on Hulu in one batch on Wednesday April 28th, the remaining seven episodes of season four will be released weekly each Wednesday until June 16th, giving US viewers all time to digest.
For UK viewers, season four is confirmed to be airing on Channel 4 as usual, but the broadcaster has yet to confirm a start date. As soon as one is announced, we’ll pass it on. The imported show traditionally airs weekly on the terrestrial channel. Seasons...

Update 2/25: Jordan Peele’s Monkeypaw and Simon Kinberg’s Genre Films have issued a statement about the end of The Twilight Zone series.
We greatly enjoyed our time working on The Twilight Zone — particularly when the real world around us often felt more and more like another dimension. We cherished the opportunity to collaborate with so many talented writers, actors and crewmembers. After 20 unique episodes, we have told the stories that we wanted to tell, and CBS All Access was gracious in their understanding of our decision. It was an honor and a privilege to bring audiences a modern re-imagining of Rod Serling’s iconic creation.

Women In Film is accepting applications for the organization’s 2019’s Film Finishing grants, which for the 34th year will award grants in cash and in-kind gifts for films by female directors. The submission period runs through July 14. Recipients will be revealed in November.
Last year, nine grantees were chosen by an industry jury. The winners emerged from a crop of 390 feature-length narrative films, documentaries and shorts, submitted from 22 countries.
This year, Wif said 10-15 grants will be awarded. It also plans to debut a public showcase of fund recipients’ completed films in September.
Previous Wif grantees have gone on to win Oscars, Emmys and festival awards. In 2018 three recipients — Amy Adrion’s documentary Half the Picture, Christina Choe’s Nancy and Stephanie Soechtig’s The Devil We Know — bowed at Sundance. Another docu, Tina Brown and Dyana Winkler’s United Skates, won the audience award at Tribeca. Another, Cynthia Wade’s Freeheld,...

The signpost ahead reads “The Twilight Zone,” ushering viewers to a realm that at once feels familiar and yet is almost entirely new. Executive producers Jordan Peele and Simon Kinberg have reimagined Rod Serling’s classic horror/science-fiction/fantasy series from the ‘60s for a whole new generation.
At an event in Hollywood this year, Kinberg revealed why it was the perfect time to bring back the show. “I think the world all of a sudden was in desperate need of ‘The Twilight Zone,’” he said. ‘If you said three, four years ago that like a reality star who had no political experience will be the leader of the free world with access to the nuclear button, you think that’s a crazy ‘Twilight Zone’ episode.”
Kinberg also said that the vision Peele and CBS All Access had meshed with how to tell stories while pushing it to the limits.

The Film Independent Spirit Awards have come to a close in sunny Santa Monica, with “If Beale Street Could Talk” winning Best Feature, Best Director for Barry Jenkins, and Best Supporting Female for Regina King. The love was spread fairly evenly across the other major prizes, with Glenn Close of “The Wife” taking home Best Actress, Ethan Hawke earning Best Actor for his performance in “First Reformed,” and “Can You Ever Forgive Me?” winning Best Screenplay (Nicole Holofcener & Jeff Whitty) and Best Supporting Male (Richard E. Grant).
“We the Animals” led all films with five nominations, followed by “Eighth Grade,” “First Reformed,” and “You Were Never Really Here” with four apiece. There will be excitingly little overlap between today’s ceremony and tomorrow’s — for the first time since 2008, no movies are up for the top prize at both shows.

Winners of the 2019 Independent Spirit Awards, hosted by Aubrey Plaza, were revealed on Saturday, February 23, one day before the Oscars. Unlike years past, when many Best Feature nominees coincided with the Academy Award choices, the 34th edition of the Spirit Awards, which celebrates indie fare, had no cross-over in the Best Picture category.
The biggest winner of the night was “If Beale Street Could Talk,” which took home Best Feature, Best Director for Barry Jenkins and Best Supporting Female for Regina King, who is likely to repeat at the Academy Awards. And Glenn Close, whose little white dog Pippi stole the show, is pretty much a lock to repeat her win for Best Female Lead at the Oscars as well. Otherwise, the Spirits were pretty much spread out, save for two honors granted to the horror remake “Suspiria,” the Robert Altman Award along with cinematography, and two wins, Best Screenplay...

The 2019 Independent Spirit Awards will be handed out on February 23 during an afternoon ceremony on Santa Monica. These awards often preview the winners of the Academy Awards the following day. This year, we are predicting that both actress tipped to take home Oscars will win here first: leading lady Glenn Close (“The Wife”) and supporting player Regina King (“If Beale Street Could Talk”). But for the first time in a decade, none of the five films up for Best Feature here number among the nominees for Best Picture at the Oscars.

As the Berlinale expands its efforts to achieve gender equality, Women and Hollywood founder Melissa Silverstein co-hosted and moderated a discussion about women striving for industry change Saturday at Berlin’s Regent Hotel. The sharp and focused panel of six experienced industry women – creatives, organizers, journalists, festival organizers and activists – welcomed a full house composed of 98% women.
Silverstein welcomed Andrea Riseborough, the star of opening night film “The Kindness of Strangers,” on stage. The actress’ Mother Sucker Prods. co-sponsored the event.
Riseborough was surrounded by the Toronto Intl. Film Festival’s executive director and co-head Joanna Vincente, co-founder of Le Deuxieme Regard Berenice Vincent, South African writer-director Jenna Bass, whose feature “Flatland” is at the festival, and British Blacklist creator Akua Gyamfi.
Silverstein introduced the central question: “How are women in the industry pushing for change?” Other topics that arose were how much progress has been made, what expansion strategies...

Despite directing less than 40 percent of the feature films at the 2018 Sundance Film Festival, female filmmakers made off with all of the fest’s big awards. Now, in the wake of another dismal awards season that saw some of its best talents shut out from its biggest accolades, can Sundance 2019 offer similar hope?
This year, Sundance has no shortage of women behind the camera, but these directors are also veering from the tired trope of A Woman’s Movie. “There’s serious drama, and there’s comedies, and there’s big films and little films, and we also some really great discoveries in our international section,” said senior programmer Caroline Libresco. “I think there’s a beautiful outpouring of work by women, and we want to support that, and we feel really privileged to be able to create a platform where that work can be seen.”

“It’s about connection, letting your guard down, what it costs to make a genuine, warm connection with someone and what you lose when it goes away,” explains actress J. Smith-Cameron about her independent film “Nancy.” To make yourself so vulnerable is “a big risk,” she says, but “that’s what everyone craves. I think it’s human nature. It’s in our DNA to really need that kind of connection.” Watch our exclusive video interview with Smith-Cameron above.
“Nancy” is a “love story” of sorts, but not the kind you might imagine. It stars Andrea Riseborough as the title character, a “serial impersonator” who assumes different personas in order to get close to people. But then she sees a grieving couple on TV (played by Smith-Cameron and Steve Buscemi) whose daughter disappeared 30 years ago, and Nancy starts to wonder if that really might be her.

The nominations for the 34th Independent Spirit Awards were announced live this afternoon, setting the stage for the awards season with a decidedly indie bent. Over the last several years, the Indie Spirits have become both a champion of underdog indies and a key indicator in which films and performances could end up with the Oscar.
Some of the year’s biggest titles are, however, not eligible for this year’s Indie Spirits per their rules, including “Vice,” “The Sisters Brothers,” and “Mary Queen of Scots,” while Alfonso Cuarón’s lauded “Roma” only qualifies for Best International Film.
Favorites like “Eighth Grade” and “First Reformed” dominated the big categories, with each film earning four nominations, including Best Feature for both, Best Actress for “Eighth Grade” lead Elsie Fisher, and Best Actor for “First Reformed” star Ethan Hawke. “We the Animals” led the entire field with five total noms. As 2018 winds down, like most cinephiles, we’re looking to get our hands on the titles that may have slipped under the radar or simply gone unseen. This is far from a be-all, end-all year-end feature (that will come at the end of the year), but rather something that will hopefully be a helpful tool for readers to have a chance to seek out notable,...

Andrea Riseborough plays a woman trying to convince a couple she is their long-lost daughter in Christina Choe’s strong debut feature
There are good performances and interesting, though undeveloped, narrative ideas in this debut feature by the writer-director Christina Choe. J Smith-Cameron and Steve Buscemi play Ellen and Leo, a careworn, middle-aged couple whose infant daughter disappeared 30 years ago and has never been found. Suddenly, a thirtysomething woman, Nancy Freeman (Andrea Riseborough) makes contact; she has an eerie similarity to the police’s computer simulation of how the missing girl would look now, and she has a plausible story about how her late mother evasively told her she was adopted. What is going on? Could it be that desperate loneliness and emotional damage on both sides is drawing them delusionally together?

J Smith-Cameron and Steve Buscemi play Ellen and Leo, a careworn, middle-aged couple whose infant daughter disappeared 30 years ago and has never been found.
