Time and place feel both concrete and, at times, slippery in this debut from British director Charlotte Wells. The firm sense of place is generated by a Turkish holiday resort in the Nineties, where young single dad Calum (Paul Mescal) is spending time with his 11-year-old daughter Sophie (Frankie Corio). We see the problems Calum has that Sophie doesn't as she is more focused on the holiday emotions of childhood, like hanging out with new friends or a first kiss. Framed by the older Sophie (Celia Rowlson-Hall) looking back at a holiday video shot on the trip, we see how interactions take on ambiguity through the passage of time. These uncertainties are also emphasised by strobe-filled moments of emotion that speak to the past, present and future all at once.

Paul Mescal surprised his Aftersun co-star Frankie Corio with a personalised message from Olivia Rodrigo.
The actors star together in Charlotte Wells’s coming-of-age drama about a father and daughter on holiday at a Turkish resort.
While filming in May 2021, Mescal arranged for the “good 4 u” singer to wish Corio a happy birthday in a pre-recorded video.
In a short clip shared by Leona Corio, Frankie’s mother, on Thursday (9 March), Mescal is seen holding his phone to his co-star as she watches the message.
“Hi Frankie, it’s Olivia, I heard it’s your birthday,” Rodrigo says, before wishing her the “best day ever”.
“I hope you eat lots of cake and open lots of presents, and I hope I get to meet you real soon,” Rodrigo told Corio, then aged 10 or 11.
“Hope this one's the best year yet.”
After Rodrigo’s video ends, Corio is seen beaming and rendered speechless with surprise.

A hefty majority of recent Best Actor Oscar winners have been honored for relatively long performances, with nine of the last 10 having clocked in with over 77 minutes of screen time. Over the last 10 years, the Academy had several opportunities to award lead male performances that fell under the one hour mark (as they had dozens of times over previous decades), but their clear preference toward lengthier roles always carried over. This year, multiple actors who don’t hit the 60-minute threshold are nominated, and they will probably meet the same fate as their predecessors.
Will Smith took the 2022 Best Actor prize for his one hour, 30 minutes, and 10 seconds of work as Richard Williams in “King Richard,” which constitutes 62.33% of the film. His is the 18th longest of the 95 performances ever honored in this category. He was immediately preceded by “The Father” star Anthony Hopkins, who came closer than any lead...

A version of this story about Oscar nominee Paul Mescal and “Aftersun” first appeared in the Down to the Wire issue of TheWrap’s awards magazine.
Irish actor Paul Mescal turned 27 the week after his first Oscar nomination for playing a wounded, doing-his-best young father on holiday in Turkey with his wise-beyond-her-years daughter (Frankie Corio) in writer-director Charlotte Wells’ semi-autobiographical “Aftersun.” That makes him the youngest acting nominee this year. The film also catapulted his already-soaring reputation as a talent to watch, following his Emmy-nominated breakout role in Hulu’s “Normal People” in 2020. He’ll soon be shooting a sequel to “Gladiator” with Ridley Scott. Could there also be a Tony nomination coming down the pike at some point?
He discussed that and more with TheWrap.

The final stretch of the 2023 Oscar season has started with voters casing their ballots for the winners of the 95th annual Academy Awards. All season long, Gold Derby has been interviewing dozens of the nominees, including all five contenders for Best Actor. Follow the links below to watch each of these 20-minute interviews.
Austin Butler, “Elvis”
Butler took on the highly-coveted task of embodying one of the greatest musical icons in history in the title role of Baz Luhrmann’s biopic. He describes his process of transforming into the legend, sharing, “Some of it is just getting your body to be able to move in a certain way. And then it’s not making any of that choreography. It can never feel choreographed.” He formed an immediate emotional connection with the late musician when he learned that Elvis’ mother passed away when he was only 23 because, “It’s the same...

When the 2023 Oscar nominations were announced in January, there was one nod that took some people by surprise: Paul Mescal in the shortlist for best actor. The Irish star has received the recognition for his incredible work in "Aftersun," released by A24 in 2022. He's the only nomination for the film, in which Mescal stars as a former teen dad who's struggling to connect with his preteen daughter and himself, told through the eyes of that daughter (played by Frankie Corio as a child and Celia Rowlson-Hall). It's based on the experiences of the film's writer and director Charlotte Wells, who made her directorial debut with the film.
While his nod is undoubtedly deserved, Mescal is remaining humble and told the Evening Standard, "Look, I'm not going to win." But he is preparing a speech just in case! "It's kind of low-stakes pressure, I can basically just sit back and enjoy it,...

Best Actor Oscar nominee Paul Mescal recently chatted with Gold Derby’s Christopher Rosen about his role in the A24 film “Aftersun,” in which he plays Calum, a vacationing father who tries to hide his depression from his young daughter Sophie (played by Frankie Corio). Mescal candidly discusses working with director Charlotte Wells and how he’s “grateful” she encouraged so much “creative freedom” on set. Wells recently won the DGA Award for Best First-Time Director.
Whenever he was filming scenes with Corio, there was a special “rhythm” on set, Mescal tells us. “I wasn’t expecting to go to Turkey and become friends with an 11-year-old,” the Irish actor laughs about his on-screen daughter. “I think the reason that the chemistry translates is because it exists.” In addition to his Oscar bid, Mescal also earned notices at the BAFTA Awards and Gold Derby Awards.

Gender-neutral awards were supposed to make things fairer, a bit like the new off-field video assistant referee in football. And, just like Var, some argue that they’ve levelled the playing field. Others think they’re destroying the game. A few may simply wish to celebrate their wins without turning round to check if a man with a computer says it’s Ok. Whatever your view, the topic is everywhere in this year’s testy awards season; last weekend’s Brit and WhatsOnStage Awards both implemented categories without gender distinctions, with results that were lambasted and lauded respectively. But for an idea that’s about looking beyond the binary, the conversation so far has focused very much on winners and nominees whose gender identity corresponds with the sex registered for them at birth (otherwise known as cisgender). Surely that shows the real issue: the creative industries are trying to run...

Paul Mescal is proud of how “Aftersun” has refused to set.
The Best Actor first-time Oscar nominee looked back on the independent film, marking writer-director Charlotte Wells’ feature debut and co-star Frankie Corio’s breakout role. While “Aftersun” topped critics’ list for being the best film of 2022, its sole Oscar nomination was for Mescal.
“Look, ‘Aftersun’ was never going to be a film that was ingrained in the campaigning world,” Mescal told Vanity Fair. “We did our promotions on the festival circuits, and then there was just nothing you could read; I did lots of Zooms and stuff while I was doing the play [‘Streetcar Named Desire’], but I don’t know. There’s something that I would describe as very elegant about how ‘Aftersun’ has just hung around.”
Mescal called “Aftersun” the type of film that breaks through every year.

Exclusive: Arthouse streamer and distributor Mubi has traditionally been shy about revealing performance numbers for its movies, but today we can reveal that BAFTA and Oscar hopeful Aftersun has become the company’s most streamed release globally.
We’re told the Paul Mescal-starrer has now far surpassed Mubi’s previous best-performers including Portrait Of A Lady On Fire, The Worst Person In The World, Drive My Car, Decision To Leave, Shiva Baby and Titane, some of which were released during the pandemic, a boom time for streamer engagement.
The film started streaming in the UK, Ireland, Italy, Latin America and a handful of other markets on January 6, 2023, and has also become the top-viewed film all time in these individual territories. It will join the platform in Germany, Austria and Spain in March, and later in France.

Chalk it up as yet another set of accolades for celebrated conductor-composer Lydia Tár – despite all that trouble with the former student and the questionable power dynamics she fosters, she’s come up trumps once again. At the 43rd London Critics’ Circle Film Awards, TÁR was named as Film Of The Year – with its director Todd Field) winning Actress Of The Year.

It was named British/Irish Film Of The Year, with a Screenwriter Of The Year award for Martin McDonagh, respectively.

The 43rd annual London Critics’ Circle Film Awards was a well-attended affair that crowned the provocative culture war drama “Tár” as the Film of the Year on Sunday.
“Tár” won three major awards, with Todd Field named Director of the Year and Cate Blanchett Actress of the Year. Blanchett is no stranger to this award, having won it previously in 1998 for “Elizabeth” and in 2013 for “Blue Jasmine”.

Months into the release of “Aftersun,” Paul Mescal is still pleasantly surprised when someone approaches him about it.
“It’s one of those things [where] it’s so small and so intimate that you’re like, ‘God, I hope that resonates,’” the actor recalled in an interview with TheWrap. “And the last couple of months have just been a testament to the fact that it has.”
So have Tuesday’s Oscar nominations, where the 26-year-old earned a nod for Best Actor. Written and directed by Charlotte Wells, “Aftersun” chronicles a summer vacation taken by Calum (Mescal), a young father deeply at odds with himself, and his 11-year-old daughter Sophie (Frankie Corio). Told from Sophie’s perspective at different ages, the film lives at the crossroads between memory and hindsight.

Though many prognosticators do their best to try and predict who will be nominated for Academy Awards, there are always a few shockers — both good and bad — when the names are finally announced. This year’s nominations for the 95th annual Academy Awards saw its fair share of shockers. Actors like Andrea Riseborough, Brian Tyree Henry and Paul Mescal found themselves landing their first nominations against tough competition. Then there were notable omissions, like a lack of female directors making the cut after seeing both Chloe Zhao and Jane Campion take home the prize in the last two years.
Here, Variety breaks down the biggest snubs and surprises of the 2023 Oscar nominations.
Snub: Viola Davis, “The Woman King”
Davis seemed certain to land her fourth acting nomination (and perhaps her first as a producer) for her stunning work in “The Woman King,” a movie that not only garnered critical accolades...

In the all-too-early hours of Jan. 24, the nominations for the 95th annual Academy Awards were announced. Actors Riz Ahmed (Sound of Metal) and Allison Williams (Get Out) did the honors. Sadly, they were not joined in the festivities by Williams’ deadly-singing-robot co-star M3GAN, though she was surely there in spirit.
With a quartet of blockbuster films in contention — Top Gun: Maverick, Avatar: The Way of Water, Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, as well as Elvis — this year’s Oscars had a golden opportunity to expand its global audience beyond record-low viewership of 10.5 million in 2021. So,...

Paul Mescal freely admits that Stanley Kowalski is a wife beater and a rapist. The star of indie favorite Aftersun says he has “a lot of sympathy for him because that’s my job” — Mescal is playing the brutal antagonist in a revival of Tennessee Williams’ A Streetcar Named Desire at London’s Almeida Theatre.

The nominations for Baftas 2023 are here – and they have arrived with some notable absences.
Netflix’s German-language All Quiet on the Western Front surpassed favourites The Banshees of Inisherin and Everything Everywhere All at Once to lead the pack with 14 nominations, equalling a record held by Ang Lee’s 2001 film Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon.
Both Banshees and Everything Everywhere received 10 nominations each, with Elvis, Tár and British film Aftersun following close behind. Find the full list here.
But, of course, there have been snubs. While these ommissions might be less surprising considering Bafta released a whittled-down longlist compiling the films in contention to be named today, some key films might feel their Oscar chances are minimised following the announcement.
The most notable snub in the top categories is The Fabelmans, Steven Spielberg’s biographical film that won the top prize at the Golden Globes earlier this month. It received just...

In Charlotte Wells’ debut feature “Aftersun,” child actor Frankie Corio gives one of the best performances of the year as Sophie, a smart 11 year-old vacationing in Turkey with her loving father Calum (Paul Mescal) in the late 1990s. On the red carpet of the Critics Choice Awards on Sunday, the young star spoke about her fandom for another period piece in Netflix’s smash-hit science fiction series “Stranger Things.”
Corio spoke about “Stranger Things” to IndieWire Social Media Editor Veronica Flores on Sunday, and revealed the person she was most excited to meet during the ceremony was “Stranger Things” star Sadie Sink, who was nominated alongside Corio in the Best Young Actor category for her performance in the A24 film “The Whale” (the prize ultimately went to Gabriel Labelle for his role in “The Fabelmans”).
