Berlin’s European Film Market was the first big test of the post-strike indie film market. Executives were cautiously optimistic ahead of the EFM, reporting a “flood” of big, star-stocked projects that came together just ahead of the market, including A Big Bold Beautiful Journey (Margot Robbie’s first film post-Barbie), The Materialists (Celine Song’s first film post-Past Lives, which has Dakota Johnson, Chris Evans and Pedro Pascal circling) and action packages featuring box office draws Will Smith, Dave Bautista, Channing Tatum and Bob Odenkirk.
Coming out of Berlin, the mood has shifted from “cautiously” to just plain optimistic.
“It was good, really good,” says Palisades Park CEO Tamara Birkemoe, noting several international sales for The Magic Faraway Tree, an adaptation of the beloved Enid Blyton children’s book by British director Ben Gregor, which Wonka writer Simon Farnaby is adapting for the screen. “I felt people...

One month ago, heading into the 2024 Sundance Film Festival, the most anticipated title for buyers was not necessarily the action-adventure anthology with Pedro Pascal (Freaky Tales) or the Kristen Stewart-fronted post-apocalyptic love story (Love Me). It was Dídi, a coming-of-age film about a 13-year-old in the Bay Area from a first-time feature director with no notable U.S. stars. It quickly landed a deal with Focus Features, while films with shinier stars and higher concepts are still in negotiations for deals.
The U.S. has long been known as the great arbiter of “bigger is better.” But being risk-averse, given current economic conditions and industry trends back home (Disney, Paramount Global, Amazon MGM, and others are currently undergoing layoffs), may, says one U.S. buyer, “no longer mean getting a massive star or big director — it means costing less.” Yet, internationally, the mandate seems to be business as usual,...

Exclusive: UK Director Ben Gregor says his upcoming adaptation of Enid Blyton’s The Magic Faraway Tree will tap into children’s post-pandemic anxiety and retreat into screens as it celebrates the joy of being outdoors in nature, in a subtext that will chime with parents worldwide.
Wonka and Paddington 2 actor and writer Simon Farnaby’s screenplay transposes Blyton’s 1943 classic – about the adventures of three children who discover a magic tree in an enchanted wood – to modern Britain.
The new version will revive the tree’s ragbag collection of characters such as Moonface, Saucepan Man, Dame Washalot, Silky, Angry Pixie and Mister Watzisname as well as the lands at the top of the tree including the Land of Goodies and the Land of Birthdays.
For its contemporary reboot, the three protagonists are uprooted from their hi-tech home in an ultra-modern London Nine Elms-Battersea Power Station-style development to a ramshackle...

If you were to design a global sales agent in a lab, they would come out looking a lot like Tamara Birkemoe.
Born in Italy to Chilean parents and raised between Sweden and Rome before moving to the U.S. for film school, the multilingual exec has been a force on the indie film scene since her first job, straight out of UCLA, for Mark Damon’s Mdp Worldwide. For the next 16 years, Birkemoe put in time at Mdp (later Media 8 Entertainment) and then at Foresight Unlimited, the production and sales group Damon set up in 2005. The slate she oversaw ranged from studio-released big-budget action fare, such as Peter Berg’s Lone Survivor and Baltasar Kormákur’s 2 Guns, both Universal Pictures films, which grossed $155 million and $132 million worldwide, respectively; to Kevin Costner starrer The Upside of Anger, a New Line release that earned $28 million worldwide; and Patty Jenkins’ low-budget true-crime drama Monster,...

Enid Blyton’s The Magic Faraway Tree is finally heading to the movies, with Simon Farnaby writing the script. More here.
For many years, there’s been talking of bringing Enid Blyton’s much-loved children’s tale The Magic Faraway Tree to the big screen. The book’s character names changed over time – there’s no Fanny anymore – but it’s still continued to find a new audience.
Once upon a time, the idea of a film of The Magic Faraway Tree was something being set up at Studiocanal. However, when personnel left Studiocanal to set up Elysian, the film went with them. Simon Farnaby has long been attached to write the script, and he’s remained a constant as the project bumbles along in limbo.
But it sounds as if it’s just found fresh life.
Still with Elysian, funding has now been chipped in too via Neal Street Productions.

Dawn French is to star in Doc Martin-style drama Glass Houses for ITV.
The British commercial broadcaster has ordered the six-part series from Genial Productions, the nascent ITV-backed producer formed by The Durrells and Men Behaving Badly writer Simon Nye and ex-Tiger Aspect boss Sophie Clarke-Jervoise.
Created and written by Shameless and Cold Feet writer Mark Brotherhood, Glass Houses is set in a picturesque small coastal town with a close-knit community. It follows the stories and fall out for Maggie Connors, played by French, who doesn’t pay attention to the cautionary adage that ‘those in glass houses shouldn’t throw stones’.
Connors is a central character in town who makes it her business to know a bit about everyone’s lives. When a radio journalist interviews her for a small reportage piece about local life she gives him far more detail (and embellishment) about the locals and their...

Fuse Media has set premiere dates for the next three documentaries in its Fuse Docs series, which explore important themes through music and diversity, and announced the first title under its new indie Fuse Films banner.
Premiering on March 2, Fatherhood is part documentary, part musical performance — featuring genre-spanning songs from hip-hop to blues. It follows young people in Memphis, Los Angeles, New York and London as they write and perform songs that address healing, with the goal of closing the gap between children and their fathers. Ben Gregor directs.
Sickboy, which bows on April 6, focuses on three best friends who team up to create a podcast that laughs in the face of serious illness. Jeremie (one of the trio), whose own disease limits his life expectancy, has become deeply concerned about how our society conditions us to avoid speaking with loved ones about serious health problems. Your book raises a lot of interesting points about movie critics, but also hinted widely at the ecosystem around them. In your earlier book, It's Only A Movie, you recount the story of you going on radio on Lbc for your on-air movie reviewing debut. It's our intention at Den Of Geek to support, wherever we can, British films. That's why we covered the release of Ben Gregor's All Stars this time last month, a family-centric dance movie that, truthfully, we didn't rate particularly highly. Our review is here.
And yet, in spite of getting some critical attacks, the film has found space to become a solid hit. Furthermore, its director, a chatty and lovely man by the name of Ben Gregor, actually wrote back to one critic- Christopher Tookey of the Daily Mail - taking issue with some of the attacks in that paper's review.

I'm So Excited (15)
(Pedro Almodóvar, 2012, Spa) Javier Cámara, Raúl Arévalo, Carlos Areces. 90 mins
Almodóvar responds to his country's economic woes with camp hysteria and Carry On humour. In many ways this airborne disaster farce – anarchic, absurdist, garishly stylish and gleefully debauched – is a return to the Spanish auteur's subversive roots. But there's a serious subtext to the silliness, and the metaphors are brought back down to earth for a satisfying landing.
The Eye Of The Storm (15)
(Fred Schepisi, 2011, Aus) Charlotte Rampling, Geoffrey Rush, Judy Davis. 119 mins
The imminent death of Rampling's matriarch throws an aristocratic family's dysfunction into relief in this Aussie drama, whose overstuffed story is redeemed by three watchable leads.

It seems somewhat fitting that one of the hottest days this year marks the release of All Stars – an inherently uplifting production about two kids who form a dancing troupe with the aim of winning a talent contest, and saving their local youth centre, and we were fortunate enough to sit down with the film’s director Ben Gregor to discuss his very first feature film…
How did you first come to be involved in All Stars?
I had a background in comedy and I did a show called Midnight Beast, and they just thought “that nutter did all those music videos and dialogue, he could do this”. So I was talking to them and they had this really solid script that was really well written, but I wanted to make it more quirky and heartfelt, and re-set it inside kids imaginations. When I was young I was a skateboarder...

Sometimes when you walk into a room to interview the talent from a movie, you feel underdressed somewhat, or at times, even rather uncool. Well, never has that feeling felt so prominent, upon walking in to interview the lead roles of Ben Gregor’s All Stars Theo Stevenson and Akai Osei-Mansfield, who with their suave hair do’s and trendy outfits, made me feel, well, a little bit old.
The pair – who play Ethan and Jade, respectively, were in fine spirits as their chemistry from within the film was as evident in real life, and the two teenagers discussed their close friendship. They also talk about balancing their acting careers with their schoolwork, and Akai – famed for his dancing ability – talks about his role in the film, while Theo also delves into his own dancing talents.

Hitting cinemas at the start of May, All Stars is one of the first family-friendly films of the year produced on our shores.
The 3D dramatic comedy debuted its first teaser trailer at the end of last year. And with just over a month before it arrives, Vertigo have debuted a new full-length trailer, along with All Stars’ UK quad poster.
Ethan (Theo Stevenson) and Jaden (Akai) have a plan – recruit a crew, stage a talent show, raise lots of money and save The Garage (their youth club) from demolition…all whilst Ethan impresses the girl of his dreams with his dancing skills.
The trouble is Ethan can’t dance, Jaden’s parents have banned him from dancing, and the other members of their new crew the ‘All Stars’ turn out to be totally uncoordinated! Together, they must overcome these many obstacles, starting with convincing Gina (Ashley Jensen), the manager of The Garage,...

Here’s the first trailer released for Vertigo’s new movie All Stars. Following on from their largely successful Streetdance series of movies (although not a sequel), this movie aims to explore a child’s imagination with the use of dance, karate and much more all in 3d.
All Stars cast includes Theo Stevenson (Horrid Henry: The Movie), Akai (StreetDance), Ashley Jensen (Extras, Gnomeo & Juliette), Kimberley Walsh (Girls Aloud), John Barrowman (Torchwood), Hugh Dennis (Outnumbered) Ashley Walters, is directed by Ben Gregor and it’ll be with us Summer 2013.
Shy kid Jaden (Akai) teams up with loudmouth Ethan (Theo Stevenson) to raise money to save a youth club doomed in the cutbacks. Their plan- put on a super-ambitious dance show. Trouble is, Jaden’s been banned from dancing by his parents and Ethan can’t dance one bit. And the other members of their new crew turn out to be total misfits.

Jon Hamm is nominated for an Emmy once again for his dramatic turn as Don Draper on "Mad Men," but he's shown that he can be a flat out comedy star, too. With his various guest appearances on "Saturday Night Live" and supporting role as Kristen Wiig's jerky non-boyfriend in "Bridesmaids," he's established a reputation as a promising funnyman, and now, he's got a brand new TV role to flex that humor muscle.
IFC today announced that Hamm has joined their series, "The Increasingly Poor Decisions of Todd Margaret," a goofball comedy starring David Cross as a mailroom loser who fakes his way into running an energy drink company in England -- thanks to the equal incompetence of his bizarre CEO, played by "Arrested Development" co-star Will Arnett.
No role has been announced, but it will air starting in January, just as the fifth season of "Mad Men" kicks off.
