Welcome to It’s a Hit! In this series, IndieWire speaks to creators and showrunners behind a few of our favorite television programs about the moment they realized their show was breaking big.
“It did feel like the Avengers assembling,” said executive producer Sam Rees-Jones of casting the first all-celebrity edition of “The Traitors” on Peacock. “We knew in Season 2 we wanted to assemble an all celebrity cast knowing that that would create a buzz as well, and would help build on the success of Season 1,” said executive producer Mike Cotton.
The pair, based in the United Kingdom, told IndieWire over Zoom that another key change for the second season of the reality competition series where “faithful” contestants try to weed out who among them are traitors before the latter steal all the money they earned from completing missions was changing the way in which the episodes were rolled out.

The Challenge introduced plenty of stars to viewers throughout its 39 seasons, including Nany Gonzalez.
The beloved cast member debuted on MTV’s The Real World: Las Vegas in 2012 and then became a regular on the competition series.
Her most recent appearance came during The Challenge: Ride or Dies, where she reached another final, this time alongside Johnny Bananas, the show’s winningest competitor.
Unfortunately, Nany and Bananas came up short, losing to eventual champions Tori Deal and Devin Walker.
Since then, viewers haven’t seen Nany on any version of The Challenge, whether it be MTV’s regular seasons or one of the spinoffs like All Stars.
Rumors have suggested that she may not be interested in a return to the franchise right now.
However, a producer recently praised the longtime cast member, indicating he knew she’d be a star despite being “rough around the edges” initially.

Based on early cast speculation, the cast members for All Stars 5 will come from even more shows, including non-mtv shows.

The Challenge’s Tyrie Ballard addresses castmate’s racially insensitive remark to him on past season
Tyrie Ballard indicated that he and his castmate have been able to discuss a previous racially insensitive remark made about him on The Challenge.
The former Real World: Denver star returned to The Challenge: All Stars 4 after 11 years away, attempting to win the spin-off version of the show.
His Og castmates include Rachel Robinson, Veronica Portillo, Tina Barta, Adam Larson, Ace Amerson, Laurel Stucky, and Cara Maria Sorbello.
Tyrie appeared on six seasons of MTV’s competition series, beginning with his rookie season, The Inferno 3, which featured OGs such as Johnny Bananas, Ct Tamburello, and Ace.
In subsequent seasons, some of his All Stars 4 castmates were on the same seasons, including Brad Fiorenza, Laurel, Cara, and Ryan Kehoe.
During a recent podcast discussion, Tyrie was asked about the previous “toxic” remark made about him and if he and his castmate had talked things out since then.

The Challenge winner, Zach Nichols, delivered his latest take on the competition series, which many viewers may agree with.
He last competed on MTV’s War of the Worlds 2 season, where he stayed under the radar and worked with Team USA under the guidance of Paulie Calafiore, Cara Maria Sorbello, and others.
During that season, they ran a large alliance in the game, eliminating former show winners Johnny Bananas and Laurel Stucky.
Ultimately, Cara, Paulie, Zach, and others from Team USA reached the final, which was most of the plan. Unfortunately, they lost it to a Team UK squad featuring Ct Tamburello and Jordan Wiseley.
In his latest podcast episode, Zach discussed how alliances hurt the show and make it less entertaining.
He mentioned how he felt the show’s landscape could change with more people working together under different circumstances.

Jordan Wiseley is among The Challenge greats, with three wins on the main show and another in the spinoff, The Challenge: World Championship.
He’s become known for overcoming obstacles, including some difficult gameplay from his castmates in War of the Worlds 2.
That season, Jordan was part of Team USA along with other stars, including Leroy Garrett, Zach Nichols, Paulie Calafiore, and Cara Maria Sorbello.
Jordan’s girlfriend and then-fiancee, Tori Deal, was also part of the team until both chose to “defect” to Team UK.
The season included a memorable moment as Jordan proposed to Tori before he defected to Team UK. During the footage, Cara Maria also made a snarky remark doubting their relationship.
On a recent Zach Nichols Podcast, Jordan addressed Cara’s remarks about the season during her The Challenge: Home Turf episode.

The Challenge’s Zach Nichols has seen some of the best all-time participate in MTV’s competition series.
His castmates have included legends such as Ct Tamburello, Johnny Bananas, Jordan Wiseley, Cara Maria Sorbello, and Laurel Stucky.
Many of those champions showed up for the recent Battle For a New Champion season, which featured Horacio Gutierrez returning for his second campaign.
While Horacio reached the final on Ride or Dies in his first season, he failed to do so a second time.
He went into back-to-back eliminations and ultimately lost to his girlfriend, Nurys Mateo, in a three-person event just before the Season 39 final.
During the recent season reunion, he even called himself overrated because he had not truly proved himself in the competition yet.
The former show winner Zach agreed, calling the young star “overrated” thus far on The Challenge.

Spoiler Alert: This article contains spoilers for the Season 2 finale of “The Traitors,” now streaming on Peacock.
Just like the entire season, “The Traitors” Season 2 finale was jam-packed with drama up until the very end.
After banishing the final traitor, plus two innocent faithfuls, “The Challenge” pals Ct Tamburello and Trishelle Cannatella split the final jackpot of over $200,000.
“Below Deck” star Kate Chastain was the last remaining traitor after “Real Housewives of Atlanta” queen Phaedra Parks was banished in last week’s penultimate episode. However, Kate drew a lot of attention to herself at last week’s roundtable after she piled on Phaedra and called her “more selfish than skillful.”
In her first night as a solo traitor, Kate murdered “Real Housewives of Atlanta” alumni Sheree Whitfield, but the pressure was already high from the remaining faithfuls: “Shahs of Sunset” star Mj Javid, “Survivor” double winner Sandra Diaz-Twine, Ct and Trishelle.

The winner of season two of The Traitors has been revealed!
The Peacock reality competition series, hosted by Alan Cumming, has been a huge hit for the streaming service and fans have been loving this season.
In the show, contestants worked together on missions to fill their prize pot with up to $250,000. Several “Traitors” were selected by Alan at the start of the game, and the rest of the contestants are called the “Faithful.”
The Faithful must try to identify who among them is a Traitor, banishing one member in each episode after a roundtable discussion. At the same time, the Traitors murder a Faithful each night, while also working to keep their identities secret. In the end, if the Faithful banish all the Traitors, they’ll split the prize among them all, but if a Traitor makes it to the end, the money is all theirs.
So, who won?...

Phaedra Parks has been on TV screens off and on since 2010 when she joined the cast of The Real Housewives of Atlanta.
After getting her marching orders from the Bravo hit under controversial circumstances in 2017, her time on the network seemed well and truly over.
Thankfully, that wasn’t the case because her appearances on The Real Housewives Ultimate Girls Trip and Married to Medicine were excellent.
However, nothing could prepare us for how iconic Parks was on The Traitors Season 2.
At the beginning of the season, there were some concerns when Alan Cummings chose her to be a traitor alongside Big Brother alum Dan Gheesling.
But armed with a killer poker face, quick wit, killer one-liners, high fashion, and a savage personality, the attorney became the best traitor to grace the show because she was unafraid to make big moves, even if it caught her a lot of heat.

The Challenge: Battle For a New Champion crowned just one winner as its champion at the end of the final.
While Emanuel Neagu was the Season 39 winner after crossing the finish line first, many viewers and fans feel Nurys Mateo should have been named a winner.
Of the cast members who qualified for the final, she had been the only one who entered any eliminations before getting there.
Nurys won two in a row, eliminating four of her castmates before reaching the final, which seemed to indicate she earned it more than her fellow finalists.
In addition, she crossed the finish line at the final in second place, before Colleen Schneider, Berna Canbeldek, or Corey Lay, and many fans feel a woman should have also won Season 39.
Former show winner Derrick Kosinski agrees with that notion, as he recently commented on how the season ended, even comparing Nurys to a few of his Og castmates.

The Challenge franchise seems very aware of its rookie problem, but continues to make vain attempts to fix it. The latest trial for the decades-spanning franchise was an elongated season, Battle for a New Champion, that put fresh meat and newer vets on the cast with only one criterion: no one on the season has ever won before.
The idea was admirable, to allow some of the most promising new faces of the show and other Paramount reality tentpoles the chance to get a champion belt without series stalwarts like Johnny Bananas or Ct Tamburello dominating and taking the prize. However, the execution was terrible and the real winner of this season is not their new champion. It's the runner-up Nurys Mateo.

In Episode 16, viewers saw returning finalist Olivia Kaiser backstab her Ride or Dies friend and partner Horacio Gutierrez and his showmance, Nurys Mateo.
Olivia’s decision to save their castmate Moriah Jadea rather than Nurys or Horacio led to the couple’s elimination, along with Kyland Young.
Nurys and Horacio were shocked over Olivia’s decision to keep herself safe ahead of the final and not save them when she had an opportunity.
By the end of the episode, Horacio and Kyland were eliminated by Nurys in the three-person elimination event, ending their chances at competing in the final to become a first-time Challenge winner.

The Challenge Season 40 could be legendary based on speculation swirling over the cast.
While only a few competitors have been revealed so far, a recent addition to the rumored list is one of the game’s all-time greats.
Season 39, Battle For a New Champion, featured some of the show’s multi-time winners, including Darrell Taylor, Cara Maria Sorbello, and Ct Tamburello.
However, they only briefly appeared in one episode for an elimination event. Each attempted to eliminate a main cast member and take home $10,000 of the cast’s prize money.
Viewers hope to see more familiar faces with the yet-to-be-titled season, which some believe could be the last one shown exclusively on MTV.
This report could contain spoilers with potential cast members for the upcoming season.

Spoiler Alert: This story contains spoilers from the first four episodes of “The Traitors,” now streaming on Peacock.
Ever since both the BBC and Peacock adapted the Dutch series “De Verraders” into “The Traitors,” it’s been a hit. Both produced by Studio Lambert, the U.K. version premiered on the BBC in November 2022, with the U.S. version dropping on the NBCUniversal streamer Peacock less than two months later.
After the first season mixed non-famous cast members with celebrities, the second season of the U.S. version is now solely familiar faces. The concept remains the same: contestants must work together on missions to fill their prize pot with up to $250,000. Several “Traitors” are selected by host Alan Cumming at the start of the game, and the rest of the contestants are called the “Faithful.” The Faithful must try to identify who among them is a Traitor, banishing one...

Twenty-one reality TV and pro sports stars are about to participate in the diabolical second season of The Traitors, and for some its players, the competition will include some real blasts from the past. Luckily for former Big Brother houseguests Janelle Pierzina and Dan Gheesling, their reunion was far less dramatic than their Challenge and Survivor counterparts, despite Dan voting to evict Janelle on their last show together.
“I never blamed Dan for my eviction, ever,” Pierzina tells TVLine. “We always wanted to work together, so I was actually pretty pumped to see him because I was excited to start a new chapter.

MTV’s ‘The Challenge: Battle for a New Champion’ has a new format
MTV’s The Challenge Season 39 brings an entirely new concept, format, and twist. As a longtime fan of the MTV series, I enjoy seeing veteran players take on newbies, as it’s always nice to see familiar faces and old feuds burn brightly in a new season. However, fans (myself included) must get used to an entirely new cast with season 39, Battle for a New Champion.
