The BBC firmly switched the hype for the 60th anniversary Doctor Who specials up a few dozen notches on Saturday when it aired a brand-new two-minute trailer for the episodes just before Strictly Come Dancing. And if – like the new Strictly cast – the trailers were being marked by Craig Revel-Horwood, it might even have earned a rare use of his 10 paddle:
What a belter that was. Explosions! Potty-mouthed Donna Noble! A helicopter flying The Doctor over the swanky new Unit HQ in London! Kate! David Tennant acting his socks off, and also getting walloped by Donna’s mum Sylvia! A two-second glimpse of Ncuti Gatwa as the Doctor!
And – finally – confirmation that Neil Patrick Harris will be recreating the Toymaker (formerly known as Celestial), a truly terrifying villain who first appeared back in the sixties, and who makes people his playthings by trapping them in twisted games and making them fight for their freedom.

Shirley Ballas’ future with Strictly Come Dancing has been decided weeks after hinting she might quit.
Ballas has been a judge on the BBC dancing competition since 2017, having been brought on to replace Len Goodman as head judge.
However, Ballas suggested she was considering stepping away from the series after reaching an “all-time low” during the 2022 series.
“Last year, I was struggling,” she told The Mirror last month, adding: “It wasn’t just a little bit, it was a lot – the majority of it was in silence.”
Ballas said she received “truly awful” messages from online trolls, stating: “I felt the abuse snowballed out of control and impacted me in such a negative way. I’m a pretty stoic person, and I tend to hold everything in.”
When asked whether the online abuse would ever cause Ballas to quit, she said: “It was a difficult series, I’ll leave it at that.

Pink Floyd have reinvented their iconic logo in celebration of the 50th anniversary of their hit album The Dark Side of the Moon, much to the chagrin of a portion of their fanbase.
On Thursday (19 January), the British rock band announced the forthcoming release of a remastered deluxe box set of their popular 1973 studio record.
To commemorate the milestone, Pink Floyd reimagined their original well-known symbol: a beam of light passing through a prism, resulting in a rainbow beam.
While the new temporary graphic retained the original’s triangular prism, it replaced the beam of light with the number 50 and the zero filled in with a rainbow.
After the band swapped their Facebook page’s profile photo to the updated logo, a sect of their listeners angrily disputed the change, specifically angered by the rainbow.
“Lose the rainbow, you’re making yourself look stupid!” one commented, with a second calling...

Craig Revel Horwood has questioned Hamza Yassin’s Strictly Come Dancing win.
The judge shared his candid views on the subject while discussing the BBC competition’s latest series on Magic Radio.
Wildlife presenter Yassin was announced as the latest winner of Strictly in December 2022, and he beat Helen Skelton and Fleur East to take home the Glitterball trophy.
However, Horwood believes that, while Yassin “did an absolutely spectacular job”, East should have won the series.
“Fleur, can I say this on Magic, darling? She was robbed,” he told presenters Ronan Keating and Harriet Scott.
“There you go – that’s just me,” he continued.
“I mean, I absolutely love Fleur. For me, in the final, anyone could have won. I think Hamza did an absolutely spectacular job and he had all the audience behind him, which is really important as well.

Hamza Yassin and Jowita Przystal had Strictly Come Dancing viewers and the judges in tears tonight (17 December) after performing their Couple’s Choice in the final.
The pair danced to “Jerusalema – Remix” by Master Kg featuring Burna Boy and Nomcebo Zikode, and were competing in the final against Fleur East and Vito Coppola, Molly Rainford and Carlos Gu, and Helen Skelton and Gorka Marquez.
“I get a little emotional watching you dance,” judge Anton Du Beke told them after they performed, “because it’s like the clouds part when you come onto the dance floor and the sun comes out.”
The famously grumpy Craig Revel Horwood gave them a score of 10, leading them to achieve their first perfect 40 of the series. He said: “Hamza, you’re everything I’m not, darling. You spread joy to the world… absolutely incredible.”

Strictly Come Dancing cut a snow-themed routine from its recent results show after three boys died in Solihull after falling through ice.
On Sunday (12 December) afternoon, three children aged eight, 10 and 11 slipped through thin ice at a lake in Solihull, dying in the water. A fourth boy, aged six, remains in critical condition in hospital.
You can follow updates on The Independent’s live blog here.
Monday night’s (13 December) Strictly results show was due to begin with a pre-recorded icy routine starring the professional dancers as snowflakes, while judge Craig Revel Horwood played the ice queen.
But despite Tess Daly referring to the dance at the end of the semifinal, the results show went ahead without the performance in the final cut.
While viewers questioned why the pro number, which would usually open the show, hadn’t aired, reports emerged that the BBC had pulled the segment following the tragedy in Solihull.

Anton Du Beke has explained why he voted to save Will Mellor over Fleur East in the Strictly Come Dancing semi-final.
After a high-scoring semi-final on Sunday (11 December) night, East and partner Vito Coppola found themselves in the bottom two with Mellor and Nancy Xu.
After the couples performed again, both Craig Revel Horwood and Motsi Mabuse voted for East. But when the vote came to Du Beke, the former pro dancer said that East and Coppola had made “an error in a dismount from a lift”, and he wanted Mellor to go through.
The casting vote was then given to head judge Shirley Ballas, who voted for East and Coppola, and sent Mellor and Xu home.
However, on social media, many viewers suggested that the judges had made the wrong decision and that Du Beke was correct to take into account East’s mistake.

Strictly Come Dancing star Carlos Gu was unable to hold back his tears after Molly Rainford made it through to the final without facing the last dance-off.
Despite being one of the highest marked stars of the series, the Cbbc star has found herself in the bottom two four times so far in the competition.
Going into Sunday (11 December) night’s semifinal, Rainford was the bookies’ favourite to be eliminated before the final.
However, the couple topped the leaderboard, leading to Rainford and Gu being the first couple announced to have made it through to the final during Monday (12 December) night’s results show.
They were joined by Hamza Yassin and his partner Jowita PrzystaÅ., and Helen Skelton and Gorka Márquez.
Fleur East and Vito Coppola competed in their fourth dance-off of the series against first-timers Will Mellor and partner Nancy Xu.

A Strictly Come Dancing contestant has been eliminated from the show just one week before the final.
On Sunday (11 December), the remaining celebrities performed two dances in the hopes of scoring a place in next week’s final.
Sadly, actor Will Mellor fell at the final hurdle and became the 11th person to be voted off this year’s series.
Mellor was in the dance off with singer and radio presenter Fleur East. Craig Revel Horwood and Motsi Mabuse opted to save East, but when Anton Du Beke saved Mellor, it was down to head judge Shirley Ballas to cast the deciding vote.
“First of all, the British public has spoken and with respect I take that on board,” Ballas said. “My fellow judges have decided that they don’t agree, so I have made lots of notes here. Both couples were outstanding and, not only today, but through the series.

Hamza Yassin had a slight wardrobe malfunction during the Strictly Come Dancing semi-final.
The semi-finals of the BBC One show took place on Sunday night (11 December), with the five remaining couples competing for a spot in the final.
Each of the couples will perform two dances for the judges.
For their first dance, Yassin and his professional partner Jowita Przystal performed the Charleston to “Pencil Full of Lead” by Paolo Nutini.
The pair did extremely well, earning high praise and a near perfect score of 39 out of 40 from the judges.
Viewers at home agreed, with many posting to Twitter to share their enthusiasm for the pair.
Many, however, also noticed a slight wardrobe malfunction for Yassin who was sporting a tartan kilt and a waistcoat for the dance.
“I didn’t need to see Hamza’s pants!” wrote one person. “I don’t think they thought this costume through!”

During Saturday (19 November) night’s Blackpool extravaganza, in which the show returned to the Tower Ballroom for the first time since 2019, singer East and her partner Vito Coppola performed to a Destiny’s Child megamix.
In the video airing before the routine, East explained how her parents had always encouraged her to follow her childhood dreams of singing.
“I love singing so much because it’s part of my DNA. It’s part of who I am,” she said, before recalling how her father was a Strictly super-fan.
“Strictly Come Dancing was my dad’s favourite show,” she explained. “When I was on The X Factor, it used to run the same time as Strictly and my dad was very annoyed that he had to miss the Strictly result...

Fleur East and Vito Coppola received the first perfect score of Strictly Come Dancing 2022.
During Saturday (19 November) night’s show, the dance competition series returned to the historic Blackpool Tower Ballroom for the first time since 2019.
Singer East and Coppola performed second to last with a Couple’s Choice routine to a Destiny’s Child megamix, including the songs “Jumpin’, Jumpin’” and “Lose My Breath”.
After performing the fast-paced routine, judge Craig Revel Horwood – who was yet to get his 10 paddle out this series – told East: “One word, three syllables, beginning with F: fab-u-lous.”
Motsi Mabuse said that East was the missing member of Destiny’s Child, while Shirley Ballas said it was an “iconic routine that will go down in history”.
Anton Du Beke praised East’s control, saying that the dance was “as good as we’ve done, ever”.

Strictly Come Dancing is at the centre of a “fix” scandal following a scoring furore.
The latest episode of the BBC competition was broadcast on Saturday (5 November), and saw wildlife host Hamza Yassin top the leaderboard.
It was a challenging week for Ellie Taylor, though, who received her lowest marks yet for a Rumba that received harsh feedback from the judges that fans deemed to be “cruel”.
Taylor received a low score of just three by judge Craig Revel Horwood.
Later in the show, Revel Horwood tore into former England footballer Tony Adams, who has become this year’s “joke” contestant.
Despite his comments, though, he awarded Adams a score of four – one more than Taylor.
This prompted viewers to accuse the show of trying to “fix” the result in order to keep Adams in for the entertainment value.
“So Tony got a higher mark from Craig than Ellie?! What a joke!

‘I’m so sorry they didn’t like it:’ Ellie Taylor left upset by ‘cruel’ comments from Strictly judges
Ellie Taylor apologised to Johannes Radebe after “cruel” judges’ comments in the latest episode of Strictly.
The comedian, who appears in Ted Lasso, performed a Rumba to Heart’s power ballad “Alone” on Saturday’s instalment of the BBC competition (5 November).
Shirley Ballas and Craig Revel Horwood were not fans of the dance, though, and gave Taylor negative comments and a score of five and three.
Despite awarding Taylor seven points, Motsi Mabuse and Anton Du Beke were also not as impressed as they have been in recent weeks.
Taylor appeared visibly upset by the comments, and, while being interviewed by Claudia Winkleman about the performance, said to her professional partner Radebes: “I’m just so sorry they didn’t like it.”
The comedian said that she struggled with the Rumba due to it being “emotional” and “serious”, adding that she finds it “hard to take myself seriously”.

Five words guaranteed to strike fear into a Strictly contestant’s heart: “I’m being really picky now.” When Craig Revel Horwood nitpicked Fleur East’s jive to “Waterloo” during Strictly Come Dancing’s baffling BBC centenary show, it was with that apologetic qualifier. The judge had only pointed out East’s “boisterous” top line and a timing mishap that lasted “literally three seconds”, he insisted, because she was so good. So good, in fact, that she seems to be held to slightly different standards. She was awarded a seven by Horwood, and one week later so was… Tony Adams. It begs the question: when is a sev-eeeeeeen not really a sev-eeeeeen?
On social media, viewers were quick to jump on the discrepancy. Why were undeniably excellent dancers like East and Molly Rainford receiving sixes and sevens for strong routines with a few minor issues, while significantly worse performers like...

Fleur East was given a second shot at her Strictly Come Dancing dance-off performance again following an “incident with a prop”, the BBC have confirmed.
During Saturday (29 October) night’s Halloween show, the “Sax” singer performed a Salsa to Beyonce’s “Break My Soul”, scoring 32 points on the leaderboard.
However, East found herself in the dance-off once again against EastEnders actor James Bye and his partner Amy Dowden, with both pairs having to perform for a second time.
When East and partner Cito Coppola went to perform, however, their routine was briefly halted and the couple were allowed to restart. They danced again, then were voted through by judges, who made no reference to the incident.
The BBC confirmed that the couple had been allowed to restart during the pre-recorded results show as East and Coppola had “not begun to dance” before the incident occurred.
