It was recently announced that Warner Bros./Legendary are officially moving forward with a follow-up to Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire, with writer Dave Callaham enlisted to pen the script for the untitled movie.
There was no mention of a potential director at the time, but it seems Adam Wingard, who helmed The New Empire and its predecessor Godzilla vs. Kong, was set to return.
Was being the operative word.
According to THR, Wingard is no longer in line to direct the project. Though the report stresses that he didn't have a deal in place, anyway, it sounds like he was tentatively attached prior to a parting of ways, which is described as "amicable and stemming from timing issues," with the door remaining "open for a future return."

Jia Zhangke’s is often a cinema of déjà vu: “We’re again in the northern Chinese city of Datong,” Giovanni Marchini Camia wrote for Sight and Sound back in 2019, “it’s again the start of the new millennium, Qiao is again dating a mobster, yet no one else makes a reappearance and there are enough differences to signal that this isn’t a sequel or remake.” Camia was writing about Ash Is Purest White yet much of the same could be said for Caught by the Tides, the director’s latest experiment in plundering his archive––indeed his memories––and spinning what he finds into something new. The protagonist of Tides is again named Qiao and is again played by Zhao Tao, appearing here in more than 20 years of the director’s footage and allowing the viewer to watch that singular creative partnership evolve in real time––one of...

Across his 25-year career, Jia Zhangke has become the de facto face of independent-minded Chinese cinema — and the Cannes Film Festival has arguably been the most important institution to help him hoist that flag on the world stage.
Beginning with his 2002 drama Unknown Pleasures, the 53-year-old auteur has landed in Cannes’ main competition seven times — more than any other Chinese filmmaker in the festival’s history. Although the Palme d’Or has so far proved elusive, Jia won Cannes’ best screenplay prize in 2013 with his acclaimed anthology thriller A Touch of Sin, a searing depiction of China during its breakneck economic boom times. Jia returns to Cannes this year with Caught by the Tides, his first fictional feature since his well-regarded drama Ash Is Purest White debuted at the festival in 2018.

The Chinese title of Jia Zhangke’s mesmerizing “Caught by the Tides,” a masterfully poetic and pioneering fusion of the old and the new, can be translated in several ways. Jia himself suggests “The Drifting Generation,” but it can also mean “The Romantic Generation” with the etymology of “romantic” lying in the Chinese words for wind and current. The restless motion of the natural world is certainly captured in the English title’s reference to an ocean’s ebb and flow. But what that version cannot adequately convey is the airiness and the yearning that Jia whips in to “Caught by the Tides” — quite miraculously considering he is largely working with repurposed footage from across the last 23 years of his justly celebrated career.
Loosely speaking a love story, “Tides” is also perhaps the most definitive national portrait that Jia, modern China’s foremost cinematic chronicler, has ever delivered. This is...

A recurring motif in the films of Jia Zhang-ke is the enchantment of watching his extraordinary muse, Zhao Tao, dance — in the glitzy faux-Vegas spectacles of The World; leading a routine to the Pet Shop Boys’ “Go West” in Mountains May Depart; strutting in formation to the Village People’s “Y.M.C.A” in Ash Is Purest White. In the Chinese master filmmaker’s decades-spanning drama Caught by the Tides (Feng Liu Yi Dai), Zhao shimmies around a dance floor to pulsing Edm, unaware that the man in her life will soon leave town, dropping her into a 20-year romantic limbo.
Eclectic music choices have always played an important part in Jia’s chronicles of social change and shifting values in a contemporary China surging forward, driven by cultural and economic expansion, urbanization and globalization, its traditional insularity increasingly pierced by Western influences.
Songs are more present than ever in his new film.

This year's Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire wasn't exactly a monster hit, but it did manage to take in close to $555 million worldwide on a reported $135 million budget. Now, we have word that a sequel is officially in development, and Warner Bros. and Legendary Pictures have enlisted a writer to pen the script.
According to THR, Dave Callaham has signed on to write the untitled movie. No plot details have been disclosed, but it's assumed that both the King of the Monsters and the mighty Monarch of Skull Island will return to face a new, potentially world-ending threat.
Callaham has previously worked on several major studio tentpoles, including the 2021 Mortal Kombat reboot, Wonder Woman 1984, Marvel Studios' Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings, and Sony Pictures' Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse. He also has some prior experience with Big G, having written the early drafts and received story by...

All We Imagine as Light (Payal Kapadia)
After one film, Payal Kapadia is a name you should know––a fresh, intrepid voice in cinema. And in the wake of student protests turning the world upside-down, she’s an essential up-and-comer. Her lone feature to date, 2021’s A Night of Knowing Nothing, is an experimental immersion into India’s own student revolutions––a brutal awakening into the shockingly violent...

Jia Zhang-ke could fairly claim to be the most important filmmaker of his generation; he’d probably be the last person to do so. Audiences tend to scan Jia’s work for political sentiment, but the director has always attested that his films are strictly about people. As a lecturer in Shanghai University and elsewhere, he’s used to speaking about them at length. During a nearly three-hour masterclass at the Visions Du Reel festival in Switzerland last week, some of his answers stretched to nearly 30 minutes without pause, yet earlier that day, when I asked him if he believed on a fundamental level that the complexities of his characters––their interpersonal relationships and inner lives––were more important than what looms in the background of his stories––the epic geographical and architectural changes and vast social, economic, and political shifts––he paused, smiled, and simply said “yes.”

There’s a beautiful scene in Jia Zhangke’s 2004 film The World in which the protagonist, Tao, crosses paths with an industrial worker nicknamed Little Sister on the rooftop of an unfinished building. They chat aimlessly beneath towering spires of exposed rebar until a massive plane soars overhead, drowning out their voices. “Tao, who flies on those planes?” he asks, to which she responds, “Who knows…I don’t know anybody who’s ever been on a plane.”
It’s this precise contrast of stasis and flux, of the sublime and the quotidian, of simple personal dreams swallowed up by massive national ambitions, that characterizes Liu Jian’s newest feature, Art College 1994. Jia also lends his voice to one of its characters: Gu Yongqing, a “roving artist abroad” who speaks of “the mysterious power of art” during a visiting lecture at the titular art college. Jia Zhangke on Experimenting With AI for Cannes Entry ‘Caught by the Tides,’ Respecting the Audience
Sporting a warm smile and a pair of sunglasses – “Sorry, I’ve been busy editing and my eyes hurt,” he explained – one of China’s leading indie directors Jia Zhangke, whose upcoming film “Caught by the Tides” will be vying for the Palme d’or in Cannes next month, was guest of honor at the 55th edition of Swiss doc festival Visions du Réel this week.
Finished just in time for submission to Cannes, the film features his wife Zhao Tao, his muse over the last two decades, and tells the story of a couple spanning 20 years. (Jia previously spoke with Variety about the film in February when it still went under the working title “We Shall Be All.”)

Macho sports-movie tropes meet with bright chick-flick framing to curious effect in “Yolo,” either an ostensible boxing drama that doesn’t pick up the gloves until the third act, or a misfit romcom that takes a late and unusual turn toward transformational self-help territory. Chinese audiences have been delighted by either formulation, as Jia Ling’s second feature as director-star — following 2021’s popular time-travel comedy “Hi, Mom” — has racked up the year’s second-highest global gross so far, mostly on the strength of its domestic receipts. That’s been enough to secure it an international release through Sony, but “Yolo” is likelier to bemuse outside viewers unfamiliar with Jia’s persona as a celebrity comedian — and her extreme weight-loss journey while making the film, a narrative that powered its publicity on home turf.

Among the high-profile filmmakers selected for this year’s Cannes Film Festival is a wave of upcoming talent from Asia and the Middle East, including the first Indian feature chosen for Competition in 30 years and the first film from Saudi Arabia to ever make the Official Selection.
While Cannes has a reputation for bringing back familiar names year after year, the line-up for the 77th edition does feature several rising filmmakers and not just in the “discovery” strands of the selection.

The next installment in Legendary Pictures’ MonsterVerse was released earlier this week on March 29. Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire is a sequel to 2021’s Godzilla Vs. Kong and sees the titular monsters team up to fight a bigger Titan who threatens to destroy the world. The film received mixed responses from critics and seemed to have a good opening weekend.
Director Adam Wingard returned to helm the project after the success of the previous film. Along with other cast members such as Rebecca Hall and Bryan Tyree Henry, deaf actress Kaylee Hottle also reprised her role as Jia. Wingard mentioned how he managed to create a complicated system to give cues to the star as the performance involved many reaction shots for the monsters.

The human element is an important aspect of any monster feature, as it provides multiple perspectives, adds to the relatability factor, and makes the stakes feel real to the audience. Legendary’s Monsterverse has struggled with finding a compelling human character or story arc since the beginning, which is why almost every movie in the series has completely changed the cast. Most of the time, the narrative focus was either misplaced or simply detached from the creature storyline.
Earlier this year, Apple TV+’s series Monarch: Legacy of Monsters managed to crack the code by presenting a perfect balance between creature features and human elements through Lee Shaw and Keiko Miura’s story arc, which was seen as a positive sign for upcoming installments. However, with the latest entry in the franchise, Godzilla X Kong: The New Empire, director Adam Wingard has chosen to go in a different direction, putting...

Iconic characters survive the brunt of time and stay relevant through generations by adapting to new themes and varying treatments—an aspect that is clearly noticeable when we take a look at the seventy-year journey of Godzilla in the pop culture landscape. In a journey that mimics that of another pop culture legend, Batman’s transformation in comics itself, Toho’s Godzilla movies have ranged from originating in grim-dark disaster horror-themed spectacles to pure campy monster battles intended for the amusement of the younger section of the audience to metaphorical sci-fi allegories. Such a variety of treatment has not only made character timeless but has also paved the way for the global popularity of the iconic Kaiju. Which is why we can have a Godzilla movie set as a post-World War II human drama and, within a few months, have another one radically differing in tone as a monster bash-em-up movie,...

Spoilers for "Godzilla x Kong" to follow.
The MonsterVerse movies not only have a consistent naming approach (which makes it easier to determine the order in which to watch them) but its titles are also inspired by those of the Toho "Godzilla" films. You have "King of the Monsters," which is the 1956 localized title of the original "Godzilla" film. You have a "vs." title inspired by many of the Showa era "Godzilla" movies with "Godzilla vs. Kong," and of course, the first movie is simply known as "Godzilla."
Then there's "Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire," the new '80s buddy-cop-inspired MonsterVerse film. The "x" in the title is a weird choice, one that is open to various different interpretations. It could be a romantic thing. It could mean Godzilla "by" Kong or Godzilla "times" Kong. Anime fans, on the other hand, know that the inclusion of the letter "x...

Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire has hit the theatres and reviews from the newest project of the MonsterVerse franchise hit an all-time low, despite the project featuring second-best previews ever. While certain fans are utterly disgusted with Adam Wingard’s latest project, some are satisfied with the film. However, the newest addition to the franchise has the second worst reviews for the film standing at an all-time low of 56% at Rotten Tomatoes.
Scar King in Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire
While the film was entertaining to watch, the critics did not agree with the viewers, as the newest film failed to make any new approach to the film which prevents it from showcasing a fascinating plot from metamorphosing into something better. However, ardent fans of the franchise believe otherwise because they believe that the low score is a result of the film constantly being compared with Godzilla Minus One.

The process of sharing a habitat was never an easy one to begin with, but it's something that's only become more complex and vital over the past couple years, especially since the outbreak of the Covid-19 pandemic and the growing issues surrounding climate change. To put it bluntly: human beings, so used to being isolated, are barely able to co-exist with each other, so what hope do the rest of the species on Earth have?
The MonsterVerse series of films, Legendary Pictures' adaptation of the "Godzilla" family of characters as well as Kong, are, generally speaking, big-budget blockbusters featuring giant monsters smashing stuff up real good. However, they've done the responsible thing in keeping a foot in the real world, dealing with such weighty topics as nuclear proliferation,...

It's been three years since the King of the Monsters and the king of Skull Island graced the silver screen, but the legendary beasts are back in "Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire." Adam Wingard has returned to the director's chair for another kaiju-filled romp in the MonsterVerse, one that has even more monsters than 2021's "Godzilla vs. Kong" did. Wingard, it's also worth pointing out, is the first director to helm two movies in this franchise, so we're getting some consistency here. But are we getting anything else after the credits start rolling?
Both "Kong: Skull Island" and "Godzilla: King of the Monsters" had post-credits scenes, so it's reasonable to wonder if "Godzilla x Kong" is going to have one. We're here to address that very question in spoiler-free fashion. So fear not! If you're planning on heading to theaters to see the film on opening weekend, we're not...

Picking up where its incredibly fun predecessor left off, Adam Wingard’s Godzilla X Kong: The New Empire finds the two former foes fighting together against a new foe in an existential battle for the earth and its most vulnerable inhabitants, humans. Key cast members Rebecca Hall, Brian Tyree Henry, and Kaylee Hottle return and are joined by new addition Dan Stevens in this rip roaring, action-packed, sometimes frustrating continuation of Legendary’s Monsterverse franchise. Following the apocalyptic battle between Godzilla, Kong, and Mecha Godzilla in 2021’s Godzilla Vs. Kong, the two titans have staked their claims on their relative realms, Godzilla takes the planet’s surface, while Kong reigns over the newly discovered Hollow Earth. However, when an unknown force begins sending mysterious signals, Jia (Hottle) –...

Chicago – The key to the rapidly expanding Warner Bros. “Mosterverse” of films, now on its fifth installment, is the enduring pleasure of watching giant creatures laying waste to entire cities. Godzilla and Kong are entirely digital creations, but they have all the personality we need in a movie like this.

There will be many comparisons in the next day or three between Godzilla Minus One, Takashi Yamazaki’s shockingly beautiful and elegiac epic about a giant lizard triggering nationwide trauma for a country in ruins, and Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire, the newest monster smash up between the Big G and the Ape from Skull Island. But right at the top, every reader should recognize this is a fruitless exercise; a contrast as meaningful as pondering the differences between a genuine Oscar winner and a Saturday morning cartoon.
For make no mistake, Godzilla x Kong is a cartoon. I’m told the film technically qualifies as live action, too, because Rebecca Hall, Brian Tyree Henry, and Dan Stevens appear in front of some blue screens (and presumably to pick up hefty paychecks for their troubles). Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire releases in theaters March 29, 2024.
I hold a special place in my heart for Godzilla (2014) by Gareth Edwards, which remains my favorite film of the MonsterVerse saga. Kong: Skull Island has managed to improve the overall opinion over the years, unlike Godzilla: King of the Monsters, which continues to be a major disappointment even after a couple of rewatches. In 2021, Adam Wingard found the ideal balance between the titanic battles, human storylines, and just the right amount of openly absurd fun in Godzilla vs. Kong. Therefore, excitement levels were high for Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire.
Former adversaries, Godzilla and Kong must join forces to fight a mysterious common enemy that emerges from the depths of the Hollow Earth. Meanwhile, the human characters focus on exploring the unknown origins of the Titans, in addition to providing small but valuable assistance in the impending battles.

The MonsterVerse franchise is an underrated contender in the cinematic universe wars, with a clear watching order that avoids confusion or an overwhelming number of entries. Part of the success of the franchise is that the continuity and canon are not overly complicated — well, it is a franchise about giant monsters punching each other in the face, after all.
After doing what all big cinematic universes do and expanding to TV — albeit with a really good show in this case, the MonsterVerse is back on the big screen with "Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire." The movie is set to not only bring the King of the Monsters and the Eighth Wonder of the World together once again but also bring a bit of a buddy-cop vibe to the MonsterVerse.
Still, as relatively straight-forward as the franchise is, there are still things you should remember before watching "Godzilla x Kong,...

Godzilla vs. Kong – the fifth film in the Monsterverse franchise – stumbles into cinemas with all the grace of a giant lizard battling an oversized ape, and sadly, it never quite finds its footing.
Directed by Death Note and Godzilla vs. Kong director Adam Wingard, Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire sees the return of Rebecca Hall as Monarch anthropological linguist, and Kaylee Hottle as her adoptive daughter Jia. Also back for another slice of Kaiju mayhem is Brian Tyree Henry as Bernie Hayes, a Cybernetics technician turned conspiracy theorist and podcaster.
Kong, accompanied by his guardians, embarks on a treacherous quest to uncover his ancestral homeland. Their journey takes an unexpected turn when they cross paths with a rampaging Godzilla, leaving a trail of devastation in his wake.

There is a twist with the latest offering from the now-decade-old Monsterverse, a franchise that has featured Kong and Godzilla in their own movies and then in 2021’s Godzilla vs. Kong battling each other to the death. (These monsters never really die. But you knew that). The twist this time is there an even greater threat for these iconic giant creatures to each other and the world, so instead of being on opposite sides of the ring, they team up against an evil new villain, a batshit-crazy ape on steroids named Skar King, in order to save not just Hollow Earth — where most of the action takes place in a dense rainforest — but just about everyone else.

Watching “Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire,” I realized that the movie, a standard overly busy and mediocre blockbuster with a pretty awesome wow of a clash-of-the-titans climax, was demonstrating one of the essential principles of Hollywood movie culture today. Namely: All blockbuster movies are now connected!
Kong, living in the Hollow Earth, where most of the film is set, is supposedly the last of his kind, but he discovers a child ape who actually looks like an homage to the cuddly creature in the 1967 Japanese film “Son of Godzilla.” This kid gorilla leads Kong to a tribe of scraggly hostile apes who are living in a slave society presided over by the Skar King, an evil ape with blotchy red hair who’s as tall as Kong and wields a skeletal bone whip that looks like it was fashioned out of the spine of a sea serpent. He also commands,...

The heavyweight championship event that was Godzilla vs. Kong ended in a tenuous truce that saw Godzilla holding dominion over Earth while King Kong claimed Hollow Earth. Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire introduces a new Titan-sized threat from the depths of Hollow Earth, one so dangerous that Kong and his human allies will need all the help they can get to defeat it. Director Adam Wingard continues the kaiju spectacle with the latest Legendary Monsterverse crossover event, this time injecting an even greater sense of adventure and silliness. It’s the type of epic-sized popcorn movie that unleashes nonstop monster brawls and tongue-in-cheek humor in equal measure.
Since the events of Godzilla vs. Kong, Godzilla spends his downtime curling up for naptime in Rome’s Colosseum when not snuffing out rogue Titans that emerge. The kaiju king’s activity is closely monitored by Monarch and Dr. Ilene Andrews (Rebecca Hall). Dr.

Let them fight? No. Let Them Be Friends!
Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire had me feeling like a little Donato again; sitting on the couch, cradling a bowl of sugary cereal, with my favorite Saturday morning cartoons on TV (like Godzilla: The Series). Will the screenplay win an Academy Award? Hell no. Does director Adam Wingard have an absolute blast staging supersized Titan mayhem? Big time.
Godzilla: Minus One satisfied our cravings for societally introspective and richly commentative kaiju narratives that produce more than citywide destruction. Godzilla x Kong is almost exclusively about everything Toho’s Oscar-winning Godzilla flick is not. The only thing missing from this royally massive rumbler is famed ring announcer Michael Buffer’s “Let’s get ready to rumble!” catchphrase and a ring bell’s ding each time mayhem erupts. That’s the energy Wingard brings — the definition of Friday night popcorn entertainment.

The King of the Monsters is standing taller than ever since he became a surprise Oscar-winner earlier this month, but filmdom’s most famous kaiju isn’t about to let his newfound prestige get the better of him. Anyone worried that Godzilla might pull an Adam McKay and make a sudden pivot towards self-importance will be delighted to find that “Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire” eagerly strips both of its namesakes of whatever seriousness they might have accrued over the years, even if that means stripping them of their souls along with it.
Don’t be confused by the multiplication suggested by the silent “x” in its title: This goofy-ass, clumsily assembled Saturday morning cartoon of a movie might as well be called “Godzilla Minus Everything,” if only because the more accurate “Godzilla Minus Everything Plus Dan Stevens in a Hawaiian Shirt” wouldn’t fit on a marquee.

So there’s this big prehistoric lizard, see, and once upon a time, the powers that be tried to kill him with a nuclear bomb. No dice, alas. But that turned out to be a good thing, as this gargantuan fire-breathing reptile ended up fighting other ginormous creatures — sometimes called Massive Unidentified Terrestrial Organisms (MUTOs), sometimes called “Titans” — and despite doing incalculable property damage in various metropolitan cities around the world, the media-dubbed “King of the Monsters” mostly helped keep the world safe from harm. Thanks!

Adam Wingard's "Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire" isn't so much a feature film as it is a Joycean stream-of-consciousness ramble escaped from the mind of a sugared-up eight-year-old, his tongue stained with the remnants of Blue Raspberry Warheads, slamming action figures together, roaring to himself in destructive ecstasy. Whereas Wingard's previous Godzilla film -- 2021's "Godzilla vs. Kong" -- brilliantly embraced the inherent silliness of the monsters' late-'60s Toho entries, "New Empire" tilts full-bore into the realm of Saturday morning cartoons, presenting a brazenly toyetic and visually wild romp that will crack even the hardest of hearts. "Godzilla x Kong" may make a viewer measurably dumber, but golly, that viewer will be entertained.
"Godzilla x Kong" moves so fast as to make one dizzy, and the visuals are so busy that a large caffeinated beverage may be required to keep up. The film climaxes with multiple monsters,...

You asked, and Adam Wingard listened.
Coming off of 2021’s Godzilla vs. Kong, the filmmaker was keenly aware that critics and audiences wanted even more focus on the MonsterVerse titans, so his sequel, Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire, features multiple long stretches of runtime that’s exclusively titans, namely Kong and his journey. The giant ape is the main character of Warners’ fifth MonsterVerse film, and Wingard was able to pull off this more titan-heavy story by keeping his cast of human characters to a helpful minimum.
“In the development phase, my motto was ‘simplicity is key.’ And so I knew that if we created a smaller cast, we could create a more intimate story,” Wingard tells The Hollywood Reporter. “We can still spend time with [the human characters], and at the same time, we can spend more time with the monsters and not shortchange one or the other.”

It may be hard to think of the famous King Kong as anything but a giant, scary gorilla, but the character has also always been a metaphor. As Quentin Tarantino had a character point out in one of the best scenes in "Inglourious Basterds," Kong's basic story is a clear parallel for the plight of enslaved people taken to the U.S.
That might sound like a progressive allegory, as the chaos Kong wreaks on New York could be seen as karmic justice for the U.S.' history of racism and slavery, but the execution was pretty questionable. There've been decades of debate over whether Kong's story is a critique of racism or an endorsement of it. "This is, again, a big, Black man -- right? -- a big, black ape who is absolutely obsessed with whiteness and particularly white women," said media studies professor Robin R. Means Coleman in a 2017 NPR interview.

IMAX accounted for $3.6M of that. It often happens that the day-one winner is overtaken on day two.
