Hank Azaria and Hari Kondabolu are finally getting a chance to have a public conversation about the latter’s documentary The Problem With Apu.
During an episode of NPR’s podcast Code Switch, Azaria joined Kondabolu to discuss the comedian and writer’s 2017 project that criticized the Simpsons character Apu Nahasapeemapetilon as a South Asian stereotype and called out the fact that a white actor voiced him. Azaria had voiced the Kwik-e-Mart employee since the long-running comedy’s first season before announcing in early 2020 that he would no longer portray the character. The show has not recast the role.
Kondabolu told Azaria that he had wanted to have him appear in the truTV documentary in the hopes that this would discourage angry reactions to the film, in addition to giving the discussion closure. Kondabolu recalled feeling upset when the actor opted against appearing in The Problem With Apu, which Kondabolu wrote and Michael Melamedoff directed.

Exclusive: Shawtane Bowen and Jerah Milligan, two of the members of the Astronomy Club comedy troupe, are teaming up again on a comedy about an all-Black detective agency for HBO Max.
The streamer is developing the untitled project with The Problem With Apu producer Cowboy Bear Ninja Productions.
Created by Bowen and Milligan, the comedy follows a group of self-described sleuths who unite to create Harlem’s last all-Black detective agency after an outbreak of petty crimes goes unsolved.
The pair previously starred in the Astronomy Club sketch show, which aired on Netflix.
Deadline revealed the project in June, which Bowen said the show had been informed by living in Harlem for eight years. “I had a lot of interactions with the cops,” he told Deadline. “I thought it’d be interesting to do a show on Harlem’s first and last all black detective agency.”

Is TruTV going to solve student debt? No, don’t be silly. But one lucky contestant will get their student loans paid off by the network Tuesday night.
The network will debut its new game show “Paid Off” Tuesday at 10 p.m., which will see three college grads get a chance at winning their freedom from student debt. The show is hosted by “Orange Is the New Black’s” Michael Torpey. “Who Wants to Be a Millionaire” alum Leigh Hampton serves as showrunner.
If the idea of a game show to help people pay off what is a serious real-world issue for many sounds ridiculous, Torpey agrees.

Priyanka Chopra is adding her voice to the Apu controversy. The “Quantico” actress appeared on the May 3 episode of “The View” and referred to the controversial character from “The Simpsons” as “the bane of [her] life” while she was growing up in India. The Fox animated series has long faced backlash for its stereotypical portrayal of Springfield’s Kwik-e-Mart owner Apu.
“He was the bane of my life growing up, for sure,” Chopra said about the character. “A lot of people are talking about, ‘Oh, the show was so successful for 30 years, why are we suddenly waking up and being offended by a character that everyone loved?’”
“What happened from that time to now, the population of Indian Americans has tripled,” she continued. “So the voice is louder. Representation for people of color is louder. There’s the Internet and the media, where people can have a conversation.”

When I came of age in the eighties and nineties, cinema art houses were filled with American independent films, most of them gems. It seemed that then movie lovers could see nearly every film released. In the years since the number of independent films have grown exponentially, and I often worry that I’m bypassing, or even worse completely ignorant, of some worthwhile films that get lost in cinematic obscurity.
The Exhibitionists (2012), the second feature from director Michael Melamedoff is such a film, a compelling chamber piece about seven characters revealing their true desires over the course of two nights. At the heart of the film is fragile Regina (Pepper Binkley), who we meet nervously awaiting the arrival of her husband Walter (Richard Short), an agent provocateur filmmaker just returned from a cross-country film shoot. Held back on Sept. 21-29, the 5th annual Arizona Underground Film Festival was a major blow-out event of extreme underground greatness. And, to top it all off, they handed out a gaggle of awards to both feature films and shorts alike.
The big winner was the Best of Fest award that went to Michael Melamedoff’s sly drama The Exhibitionists, about a bunch of hedonists gathered on New Year’s Eve. Meanwhile, the Audience Award went to the reality TV parody Ghosts With Shit Jobs by Chris McCawley, Jim Morrison, Jim Munroe and Tate Young; and Kenton Bartlett’s torture flick Missing Pieces won the Director’s Award.
Some other winners include Spencer Parsons’ Saturday Morning Massacre for Best Horror Feature, a film that while not reviewed yet on Bad Lit: The Journal of Underground Film we’ve seen it and easily declare one of the best horror movies of the last few years.

This week’s Must Read is actually a series from Melanie Wilmink’s new blog. One of her posts totally won Bad Lit over with the introductory sentence: “Short films regularly draw the short stick when it comes to being written about.” Ain’t that the truth! So, Melanie rights this wrong with an amazingly well-thought out article/review of the “Crime Wave” shorts at the Calgary International Film Festival that digs deep into issues of cinematic authenticity. Then, she has more in-depth reviews of the “End of Days” shorts program at the fest. Finally, at least for now that I know of, she tackles the anthology film V/H/S, which has been getting lots of press, and hammers it for its overt misogyny.Wanna hear Jonas Mekas talk lovingly about his five Bolexes? The Manitoba Scene got filmmaker Deco Dawson to write an essay about his award-winning short film Keep a Modest Head,...

To celebrate their 5th anniversary, the Arizona Underground Film Festival has expanded to a whopping nine nights on Sept. 21-29 for a cinematic event the likes of Tucson has never seen before!
The shenanigans kick off with the opening night film The Legend of Kaspar Hauser, an experimental Italian feature directed by Davide Manuli and starring Vincent Gallo as the hero and the villain to a strange young boy, then end with the closing night film Jason M. Solomon’s nostalgic documentary 7 Years Underground: A 60′s Tale, which profiles the legendary Cafe Au Go Go in NYC that hosted such up-and-coming acts such as Jimi Hendrix, Frank Zappa, George Carlin, Lily Tomlin and more.
In between those two films lies a twisted carnage of movie mayhem, including Spencer Parsons’ demented homage to ’70s mystery cartoons Saturday Morning Massacre; Michael Melamedoff exploitative semi-doc The Exhibitionists; Stephen Amis’ Australian WWII sci-fi...

The 5th annual Arizona Underground Film Festival, which will run on Sept. 21-29 at various venues around Tucson, Arizona, has officially released the titles of six of the films that will be screening at this year’s event.
It’s clear from this half-dozen batch of movies that the fest will be sticking to its successful formula that has allowed it to grow by leaps and bounds since 2008. That formula consists of offering up a diverse batch of fun genre fare, controversial exploitation films, crowd-pleasing music documentaries and somewhat unclassifiable cinematic oddities.
The titles and brief descriptions are below. The full lineup will be available on Bad Lit: The Journal of Underground Film in early September.

Danielle Panabaker is in the midst of her scream queen phase, and she's loving every bloody second of it. The talented 22-year-old, whose credits span from the Disney Channel Dcom Stuck in the Suburbs (2004) to the family fantasy film Sky High (2005) to a series-regular role as James Woods' daughter on the series Shark (TV), starred last year in the horror flick Friday the 13th (2009), goes for scares again in another upcoming remake, The Crazies (2010), and has also wrapped The Ward (2010), the iconic John Carpenter's first fright fest in nearly a decade. ScreenStar caught up with Panabaker by telephone for an interview about The Crazies, which puts a new spin on the George A. Romero classic from 1973. In the new film, Panabaker plays Becca, one of the few people not turned into a violent lunatic when a strange toxin infects the water supply of a small Iowa town. The film,...
