Because the Casting Society of America shifted the date of its Artios Awards, this year’s nominees include films released theatrically from July 1, 2013 to Dec. 31, 2014, paving the way for last year’s Best Picture winner to nuzzle its way into contention along with 2014 hopefuls like "Birdman," "Boyhood," and "Selma." With categories ranging from Big Budget Drama to Low Budget Comedy, nearly every film that one expects to make the cut made the cut. And then some. The Csa’s nominees put "Guardians of the Galaxy" side by side with "Wolf of Wall Street," "Whiplash" with "Inside Llewyn Davis," and Disney’s "Planes" with "Frozen." If you were dreaming of a re-evaluation of "We’re the Millers," your time is now. 2015’s bicoastal Artios Awards will be hosted by Patton Oswalt (Los Angeles) and Michael Urie (New York City). The evening will also honor two-time Academy Award®-nominee Richard Linklater ("Boyhood...

The Casting Society of America has super-sized its Artios Awards feature film nominations this year, honoring 42 different films and putting some of 2014’s top contenders in categories where they’ll compete against 2013’s awards movies.
For its 30th annual ceremony, the awards for casting directors have moved from their usual fall slot to a late-January date that placed them in the middle of awards season. To accommodate the new date, this year’s eligibility period spanned 18 months instead of a single year, encompassing films released in the second half of 2013 and all of 2014.

While the Oscars have yet to make room for casting directors — a pivotal part of the Best Picture equation — the oversight isn't stopping the Casting Society of America from readying its third decade of picking up the Academy's slack. Csa announced Monday morning that the 30th Annual Artios Awards will honor Academy Award-nominated and Emmy Award-winning director Rob Marshall and Emmy Award-winning casting director Ellen Lewis for their individual work in the world of casting. The news arrives with nominations in categories of television, theater, new media and short film, and on the heels of the ceremony's move from November to Jan. 22, the thick of the awards season. Feature film nominations will be announced closer to the show date. Marshall, whose adaptation of Stephen Sondheim's "Into the Woods" bows Dec. 25, will receive the New York Apple Award, "recognizing individuals who have made special contributions to the New York entertainment...

A group of actors aiming to land work this pilot season found themselves in a room with five top associate casting directors last week. While it wasn’t an audition, it may have been the next best thing. As performers scramble to prepare for the crush of auditions that start each January, the SAG Foundation, in partnership with the Virtual Channel Network, is offering a series of workshops with casting directors and their associates. The events are being held in Los Angeles and streamed online. SAG Foundation is offering them gratis to union members; non-members who can’t attend can watch the online feed.“The SAG Foundation builds an annual curriculum based on the ebb and flow of the business,” Rochelle Rose, national director of actors programs for SAG Foundation, told Backstage. “This is the perfect time to try to draw great tips from the people whose rooms you’ll...

Back Stage's Dec. 9 news analysis, "And the Oscar Doesn't Go To…," examines why casting directors haven't been awarded Oscars in recognition for their work. The feeling I got from those interviewed is that we do not deserve them, and it was even suggested that the process of casting the main characters in features rarely involves the casting director at all. The article seems to say that the main cast is largely assembled by the producers and director, and the casting directors are merely responsible for casting the "tertiary characters."About the casting of the film "The Kids Are All Right," Steve Pond of TheWrap.com is quoted as saying, "The actors in that movie all do a great job, and it's a great job of casting, but was it done with a traditional casting director? The story I hear is it was all done with personal relationships." He is referring...

Lisa Soltau was living in Seattle when her friend Bonnie Gillespie sent her a book she had written called "Casting Qs," a compilation of interviews with casting directors. "I read it and I absolutely loved all the aspects of the job," says Soltau. "I loved the entertainment industry and movies and television. The process of casting sounded wonderful."She called one of the two casting offices in Seattle and ended up working as an intern there for about six months. But the CD told her she should move to New York or Los Angeles if she really wanted to pursue a career in casting. "I picked L.A. because I had lived there once for about three years and I thought it would be easier to acclimate there," Soltau says. "Plus I wanted to work on 'Six Feet Under,' which was airing at the time.
