‘Absolutely Stunning’: Uma Musume Pretty Derby’s Latest Film Gets Makoto Shinkai’s Stamp Of Approval
Renowned anime director Makoto Shinkai took to his official X account on May 30, 2024, to express his admiration for the latest Uma musume Pretty Derby anime film, titled Uma Musume Pretty Derby: Beginning Of A New Era.
In his tweet, Shinkai praised the film’s cel animation, describing it as a perfect example of how animation should be done. He also commended the sound design, direction, writing, and especially the film’s color palette.
“I just watched the movie ‘Uma Musume Pretty Derby: New Era’s Door’ without knowing anything about it, and it was absolutely stunning. It exemplified how cel animation should be, with truly remarkable visuals. The sound, direction, and storytelling were all executed with a confident touch. What moved me the most was the color design.“
He was particularly impressed by the interplay of light and shadow in key scenes, such as the opening underground tunnel sequence and the intense race scenes.

Interested in independent Asian animation, but not sure where to start? Well, we could give you a list of anime, but we've already got (three parts!) to an anime tribute already. Instead, here's a list of 15 animated indies from the last few years that fall outside of mainstream animation studios like Disney, Pixar and Ghibli.
This list is in no way prescriptive nor comprehensive, and is merely organized by date of release. Some of these filmmakers are more established; others are just beginning their careers. Some of these are shorts, others are features, a few are even series. Regardless, with each of these animated indies, prepare to laugh, cry, and have your mind blown by the unbridled joy of animation.

“Brunhild The Dragonslayer” official synopsis from Yen Press: “Eden… A place of perfection, where man and beast live side by side in harmony… Eden's protector, the silver dragon, regularly visits retribution upon those who would bring harm to paradise. But when the dragon discovers a human girl on the shores of Eden, he decides to raise her as his own. He teaches her that if she is to be welcomed into God's kingdom after death, she must not harbor hatred in her heart. But when the dragon's life is mercilessly snuffed out by human machinations, the girl must choose whether to heed his dying wish and stay the course of righteousness…or walk a path of vengeance.”

A searching and scattershot portrait of displacement that’s as likely to resonate with Jia Zhang-ke devotees as it is to mystify those who are new to his work, “Caught by the Tides” finds the Chinese auteur returning the most pivotal characters and locations that have defined his movies over the last two decades. Then again, perhaps it would be more accurate to say that he never left them.
Tracing the faintest contours of a scripted love story around the scaffolding of some documentary footage that Jia has collected over the course of 22 years, this elusive chimera of a film strains to literalize the delicate relationship between time and memory — a theme that has become increasingly central to the director’s work since the Three Gorges Dam was constructed in 2006 (see: “Still Life”), submerging 13 entire cities and forever displacing the millions of people who once lived in them. Here, even...

As part of the 2025 Oscar rule changes for the 97th Academy Awards, animated movies can be simultaneously submitted for Best International Feature and Best Animated Feature. This will simplify the qualifying method for the latter and specifically help animated international films that may not have access to U.S. distribution.
“Previously, animated movies selected as a country’s international feature selection [which do not require U.S. theatrical distribution] were not qualified to enter for animated feature consideration unless they also met the qualifying standards for general entry [which require U.S. theatrical distribution],” an Academy insider told IndieWire.
“This consisted of separate submission forms. Submitters will still need to complete different forms, but now animated movies selected as a country’s international feature selection no longer need to meet general entry standards to be considered for the Animated Feature award. They would, however, still need to be ruled eligible under the Academy’s definition of ‘animation.'”

Of all the American streaming services, Netflix is the one that relies most heavily on international projects. Its most critically and popularly acclaimed films and series are regularly projects originating in Europe, K- and J-dramas streamed on Netflix receive high ratings on review aggregators, and, of course, the company is betting big on anime.
Japanese animation arrived on the service in 2014, when Knights of Sidonia was announced as Netflix's first 'original' anime series, followed by many other original and licensed, failed and successful projects, as well as live-action adaptations from Death Note to One Piece, and now, 10 years later, the Netflix series Delicious in Dungeon has a perfect 100% rating on Rotten Tomatoes.
On that note, the huge deal was the April 5 addition to Netflix's library of the feature-length anime film Suzume by renowned Japanese filmmaker Makoto Shinkai. The film received rave reviews from critics and audiences alike during its theatrical release,...

Anime artist Yoshitoshi Shinomiya cut his teeth working on films by superstar Japanese filmmaker Makoto Shinkai, including the director’s box office smash hit “Your Name.” Now, Shinomiya is prepping his feature directorial debut, “A New Dawn,” a profoundly personal film inspired by the changing Japanese landscape after the Great East Japan Earthquake of 2011.
Tokyo-based Asmik Ace and France’s Miyu Productions are producing the feature, which the former will distribute globally.
“A New Dawn” unwinds inside an inactive fireworks factory that is about to go into administrative action. For the past four years, young Keitaro has lived inside the derelict structure, chasing the illusion of a father who vanished years before. The location used to be nestled in a lush forest, but the surrounding area has recently been redeveloped by the city, which covered the land with solar panels. Only a scant bit of greenery around the factory remains amongst the sea of panels.

Makoto Shinkai has etched his name among the fans’ minds with his movies. He delivered one of the greatest-ever anime movies, Your Name, in 2016. Since then, fans have had higher expectations from every movie that his name has been related to. His latest film to hit the theatres was Suzume. It was released in 2022 in Japan and had a worldwide release in 2023.
Regardless of the story, everyone was excited about the film since it was Makoto Shinkai’s creation. It was a fascinating watch, but only a few people know the true inspiration behind the creation of Suzume. The director was inspired by 2011’s Tōhoku earthquake and tsunami, which was the most powerful earthquake in the history of Japan.

The first slate presentation of CinemaCon 2024 was not a look at Warner Bros. or Disney films; it was a plea for how anime may be the unheralded savior of movie theaters.
It was a wake-up moment for the Caesar’s Palace Colosseum’s worth of local and regional exhibitors who hold little interest in the Japanese art form adapted by manga but are all looking for ways to make yen.
Presenter Mitchel Berger, Crunchyroll’s senior VP of global commerce, had a three-part plan to capture and keep his audience’s attention.
Step 1: Remind theater owners they already know the Sony-owned Crunchyroll from its “Demon Slayer” and “Dragonball” franchises, as well as Makoto Shinkai’s 2023 critical darling “Suzume.”
Step 2: Wow them with new content, including 10 minutes of the highly anticipated “Spy x Family Code: White.”
And last, but definitely not least: Inform the CinemaCon audience exactly what anime is.

The Miyazaki masterpiece then set a new record Thursday for the biggest single-day performance ever by a non-Chinese animated film, earning $23.7 million (Rmb 171.5 million). Disney Animation’s Frozen 2 was the former record holder with Rmb 167.6 million in ticket sales Nov. 23, 2019.

April’s an uncommonly strong auteurist month for the Criterion Channel, who will highlight a number of directors––many of whom aren’t often grouped together. Just after we screened House of Tolerance at the Roxy Cinema, Criterion are showing it and Nocturama for a two-film Bertrand Bonello retrospective, starting just four days before The Beast opens. Larger and rarer (but just as French) is the complete Jean Eustache series Janus toured last year. Meanwhile, five William Friedkin films and work from Makoto Shinkai, Lizzie Borden, and Rosine Mbakam are given a highlight.

Makoto Shinkai recently took to Twitter on March 14, 2024, to share his thoughts on the upcoming anime film adaptation of Inio Asano’s Dead Dead Demon’s De De De De Destruction following its preview screening.
Describing the film as “truly magnificent,” Shinkai expressed that while watching the movie, he was transported back to the same feelings of excitement, passion, determination, and talent that he experienced when the manga first debuted in Big Comic Spirits magazine back in 2014.
Moreover, Shinkai noted that the movie served as a reminder of the anxiety that has been deeply ingrained in everyone’s daily life ever since the earthquake, a sentiment that remains relevant even ten years later.
Shinkai concluded by emphasizing the importance of the movie’s creation, stating, “It’s clear that this movie needed to be made“.

To say that Suzume is one of the best anime movies to have ever been created wouldn’t be a lie considering the tremendous ratings the film has earned from almost all platforms. Encircling the life of a young teenager of the same name who sets out to save Japan through her ability to see supernatural forces, the 2022 masterpiece was a critically commended blockbuster.

The Japanese media industry was surprised recently when Koichiro Ito, the producer of the fantasy adventure anime movie Suzume, was arrested in Japan for allegedly compelling a teenage girl to send him pictures that were inappropriate on social media. At the time, the girl was fifteen years old and in her first year of high school.
Suzume
He is charged with forcing a high school student who was to send him photos of herself wearing only her underwear after they met on an online social networking site (Sns). It appears that his purported involvement in the affair has surfaced in the course of the police inquiry into a related crime. The rest of the details about the case will be revealed in the future.
He worked on and contributed to a number of notable anime productions, but his most well-known works include Suzume, Your Name, and The Garden of Words.

A producer involved in some of Japan’s highest-grossing anime blockbusters was arrested in Tokyo this week on suspicion of creating child pornography.
Koichiro Ito, 52, stands accused of coercing a 15-year-old girl he met over social media into sending him nude selfies in September 2021, Japan’s Mainichi Shimbun newspaper reported Thursday. According to another report from leading Tokyo broadcaster TBS, Ito transferred 12,500 yen (about $85) to the girl in exchange for the photos, violating Japan’s Child Prostitution and Pornography Prohibition Act. He was taken into custody near his home in Tokyo’s Shibuya ward Wednesday.
Ito’s arrest has sent shock waves through Japan’s insular anime industry. The executive has anime credits dating back nearly 20 years, and he was the lead producer on anime auteur Makoto Shinkai’s globally beloved recent blockbusters, including Your Name (2016, $358 million worldwide), Weathering With You (2019, $193 million) and Suzume (2022, $323.3 million).

It’s the end of an era for the Berlin International Film Festival, as Artistic Director Carlo Chatrian and his co-head Mariette Rissenbeek — a pair of fearless cineastes and programmers who came onboard together in the summer of 2019, and helped steer the world’s largest film festival through the crisis of the pandemic years — are being unceremoniously shoved out to sea after the 2024 edition as a part of cost-cutting measures instituted by the Federal Government Commissioner for Culture and the Media, Claudia Roth.
It’s too soon to say how the Berlinale will shrink and suffer in the absence of the leadership that has allowed the festival to remain such a vital arena for world cinema at a time of industry-wide constriction, but even a quick overview of this year’s program suggests that Chatrian and Rissenbeek will be going out with a bang.
