When your name comes up on Death's list, there's not really much you can do, except wait for him to collect you. Well, maybe not quite for Eli Cody; he might have gotten his fatal diagnosis, but he's not going out fast or easy, or without making sure he's tied up every loose end he can before he lets Death put a hand on his shoulder. Being a musician, Eli sees what he's leaving behind laid out for him as such that he will sing his way out the final door, as he tries to mend what he's broken. Ben Epstein's feature debut Buck Alamo follows Eli as he comes to terms with his impending death. The subtitle is 'A Phantasmagorical Ballad', and while it...

Will Smith is producing a script from 2017's Black List about Michael Jordan's brief baseball experiment
Imagine if LeBron James decided to take a year off of basektball to play amateur tennis. Imagine if Christiano Ronaldo wanted to devote a year to his real passion: interpretive dance.
Well in 1994, something as unexpected and bizarre as any of those hypotheticals happened. Michael Jordan, one of the greatest basketball players of all time, retired and decided to give it a go as a baseball player.
Now, 23 years later, Will Smith will be producing a movie about it.
The Prospect, written by Ben Epstein, was included on 2017's Black List - the list of best unproduced screenplays floating around Hollywood. It didn't have to wait long to find a home.

MTV's amusement park comedy Happyland may have gotten off to a rocky start. During Friday's Television Critics Association summer press tour stop, producers and the show's young stars defended the twist at the end of the pilot that reveals that the show's leading lady and her new young suitor may be brother and sister — after they've kissed. Happyland, from Ben Epstein (Daddy's Girls), is a soapy teen comedy exploring the underbelly of one of the country's most popular theme parks and those who work there. Apparently there's a reason “Game of Thrones” is so popular with TV critics: the incest. A Television Critics Association panel on MTV's new series “Happyland” Friday turned into a barrage of questions about a kiss between two possible siblings. The panelists, sensing that the kiss might get a lot of attention, didn't exactly discourage the questions. At one point one of the shows stars said incest was great. She was kidding. MTV's "Scream" pilot is starting to come together.
Jay Beattie and Dan Dworkin -- the men behind “Revenge" and "Criminal Minds" -- have joined the TV horror project. Susanne Daniels, MTV's president of programming, announced the news at the Television Critics Association Summer 2013 press tour on Friday.
MTV revealed its plans to "reinvent" the hugely successful horror film franchise from Kevin Williamson and Wes Craven at the network's 2013 Upfront Presentation in April. The potential "Scream" series is being developed with production company Dimension Films, and although Williamson isn't actively involved in the pilot (he's already behind Fox's successful serial killer drama "The Following"), Craven is reportedly in talks to direct the pilot.
MTV's proposed "Scream" show would aim for a summer 2014 debut if it receives a series pickup.
Daniels also confirmed the premiere dates for the latter half of "Teen Wolf" Season 3, as well as the fact that "Snooki & Jwoww" Season 3 will debut in October,...

How to Make it in America sits comfortably on the ever-growing list of entertaining TV series that were prematurely cancelled before they got their fair shake.
Call it a victim of bad timing.
The series centered on Ben Epstein (Bryan Greenberg) and Cam Calderon (Victor Rasuk), two struggling New Yorkers trying their best to be entrepreneurs. Several journalists compared the series to Entourage. Unfortunately, both shows were on the same network. At the time of Ben and Cam’s premiere, Entourage had already shifted past its heyday and was wearing on its audience. Ben and Cam entered a space that wasn’t looking for another Vincent Chase (Adrian Grenier), Eric Murphy (Kevin Connolly), Johnny Drama (Kevin Dillon), and Turtle (Jerry Ferrara). The Entourage boys may have been from New York, but their lifestyle bore the glitz of La. You always felt like something good would happen and they’d just keep making more money.

Unlike in theater or television, writers generally get the short end of the stick in the movie business. When a film doesn't work, the script is blamed, when it does work, the director gets credit. Writers get fired, rehired, fired again, rewritten and screwed out of credit. But that's not to say that once they get the momentum behind them, a screenwriter can't become just as talked about as actors, actresses and directors around Hollywood watering holes and meeting rooms.

The dream is over -- at least for Ben Epstein and Cam Calderon. HBO has cancelled How to Make It in America after two short seasons on the air.
How to Make It in America follows two 20-somethings (Bryan Greenberg and Victor Rasuk) as they try to hustle their way into New York City's fashion scene. They're determined to achieve their version of the American Dream and make a name for themselves in the competitive industry. Others in the series include Scott Mescudi, Lake Bell, Luis Guzman, Eddie Kaye Thomas, and Shannyn Sossamon.
The first season of America attracted an underwhelming 0.3 rating in the 18-49 demographic with 646,000 total viewers. Despite lackluster numbers, HBO renewed the series for another season of eight episodes. On Tuesday, HBO officially canceled "How To Make It In America," their series about a group of friends... well, trying to make it in the New York City fashion world. Starring Bryan Greenberg, Victor Rasuk, Lake Bell, and even Kid Cudi, the series read a bit like "Entourage" (with Mark Wahlberg behind the scenes) minus the money, with added New York grit.
In its second season, "How to Make It In America" averaged about 2.3 million viewers on Sunday nights -- down 25% from its first season -- and suffered from a serious lack of buzz. (In comparison, HBO didn't cancel the newbie "Enlightened," which only premiered to 1.5 million viewers, but which did get some Golden Globe love this week.)

"Thanks to @HBO for the 2 seasons of #HowToMakeIt It was a unbelievable experience playing Ben Epstein," Greenberg tweeted on Tuesday after the announcement was made. "Thank you to all of the fans of How To Make It.

If you're a 20-something living in New York, traversing the downtown scene in search of big breaks and big dreams, chances are How to Make It in America is your kind of show. If you're not, the popular HBO series probably makes you wish you were.
How to Make It, created by native New Yorker Ian Edelman, chronicles the journey of two childhood friends from the Lower East Side with skyscraper-sized aspirations -- -- played by Bryan Greenberg and Victor Rasuk -- who set out to start their own apparel company. The show, which begins its second season on Oct. 2, offers not only a spot-on gritty-meets-glamorous view of life in the Big Apple, but one of the more realistic portrayals of entrepreneurial life in one of the city's sexiest and storied industries -- fashion.

Ah, New York. It's inescapable really. Like it or not, it's still what people think about when they think of the American dream. Usually that has nothing to do with the actual New York City, so it's nice to see a show attempt to portray how New York is to New Yorkers, that strange mix of the artificial and the dangerous, where the glamour is gritty and the grit is glamourous. In other words, how it's the opposite of L.A.
So there's one thing for How to Make It in America against its West Coast rival, Entourage. It's set in New York, it's shot in New York, it's full of New York actors and locations. Which isn't to say it's not pure fantasy. It is. Ben Epstein and Cam Calderon live in a world of hipster parties and latino gangsters, homemade t-shirts and indie energy drinks. Everyone knows everyone...

I wasn't sure what to expect going into the first episode of How to Make It in America. I guess I was looking for a sort of Entourage-like series that it was being marketed as. And it was. Dozens of similarities could be drawn between How to Make It in America and Entourage, but here's the difference: lack of Ari Gold notwithstanding, America is funnier than Entourage.
Why is that? The answer's doesn't lie with the characters; while they're memorable, they're all a little too stereotypical and underdeveloped, which is normal for a first episode. The answer lies in the fact that, unlike Entourage, the show itself seems to be winking at the audience. While watching it, I often thought of Arrested Development, especially in the jump-cuts to inanimate objects that made Ad so memorable. For example, in How to Make It in America, the character Cam learns that his gangster cousin Rene (Luis Guzman,...

Too many clichés mean that, despite a razor-sharp script, jazzy direction, and quality acting, How To Make It in America too often seems a Boys Own for the millennial generation.
While their friends are creating a stir as designers, gallery owners or photographers, Ben Epstein (Bryan Greenberg) marks time selling Japanese jeans in Barneys and Cam (Victor Rasuk) channels his explosive energy into one dodgy hustle after another. They imagine themselves as comers, but they also know they're only a few steps away from turning into the slaves to "the man" they so despise. Over the last year Kid Cudi has made quite a name for himself. He's gone from the guy whose name no one could pronounce to three Grammy nominations and features on tracks with everyone from Jay-z to Shakira. In a short time he's achieved a lot in the music industry, and now he's ready to show off his acting as Scott Mescudi.
"The fact that everybody is finally getting to see me act and stuff is part of my dream coming true. It's just really dope, and people could see me be silly. HBO's long-in-development comedy "How to Make It in America" will see the light of day in February.
The show, which focuses on a pair of would-be entrepreneurs (Byran Greenberg and Victor Rasuk) trying to climb the ladder in New York, will premiere Sunday, Feb. 14. "How to Make It," which was picked up in December 2008, comes from the producing team behind "Entourage."
HBO has ordered eight episodes of the show, which follows Brooklynites Ben Epstein (Greenberg, "October Road") and Cam Calderon (Rasuk, "Stop-Loss," "Che") as they try to establish themselves in the fashion business. They get an assist from Cam's cousin Rene (Luis Guzman, "John from Cincinnati") -- who's working on a business idea himself -- and their friend Domingo (Scott "Kid Cudi" Mescudi).
"How to Make It" also stars Lake Bell ("It's Complicated") as Ben's ex-girlfriend; Martha Plimpton ("200 Cigarettes") as Bell's boss; Eddie Kaye Thomas ("'Til Death," "American Pie...
