Meredith Stiehm will seek a second two-year term as president of WGA West in the fall election, and the other top officials of the guild will also seek reelection.
Justine Bateman, the writer-director and former “Family Ties” star, is running for a spot on the WGA West board. Bateman has become outspoken on the need for tight regulation of artificial intelligence.
The guild announced its preliminary list of nominees on Wednesday. Stiehm, who has been active in both the agency campaign and the current strike, will run against challenger Rich Talarico, a “Key and Peele” writer who has faulted the guild for not doing more to fight back against the release of free clips of the show on YouTube.
Michele Mulroney is running for reelection as vice president, and Betsy Thomas is seeking another term as secretary-treasurer. They will run against Isaac Gomez and Jeffrey Thompson, respectively.

At least one Republican senator has serious doubts about Donald Trump’s chances to win in 2024. Sen. Bill Cassidy said that he believes the former president “cannot win a general election.”
“During the last election cycle, we saw in all the swing states, almost all — Georgia, Pennsylvania, Nevada, and Arizona — that the candidates for Senate that Trump endorsed all lost,” Cassidy said on CNN’s State of the Union on Sunday. “If you had taken the votes that went to other Republicans and put them together, those Republicans would have won.

Kevin McCarthy is having a rough go of it in his quest to become speaker of the House of Representatives. He didn’t come anywhere close to getting the votes he needed on the first or second ballots cast on Tuesday, and drifted even further away from the gavel on the third. McCarthy is desperate for help, which is why it was a little curious that Donald Trump, who has endorsed McCarthy for the role, didn’t try to rally support publicly as his top lackey in the House took L after L.

The mood out of Hollywood has been celebratory following Democratic Sen. Raphael Warnock’s win over Republican challenger Herschel Walker in Tuesday’s Georgia runoff election, the last high-profile outstanding race from the 2022 midterm elections.
Actors from Mark Ruffalo to Rosario Dawson and Kerry Washington cheered the victory, which gives Democrats an outright majority in the Senate for the remainder of President Joe Biden’s first term. Ruffalo also praised Warnock, who made history in 2021 when he became Georgia’s first Black senator, for now being the first Black Senator elected to a six-year term in the state’s history.
Democrats’ Georgia victory gives the party a 51-49 Senate majority, amid Republicans flipping House control in the midterm elections.

Kari Lake lost her bid to become Arizona’s governor to Democrat Katie Hobbs, reiterating the national rebuke Republicans received from voters in last Tuesday’s midterms. Despite a poor showing by conservatives in Arizona, Lake, an avowed election denier, is insinuating foul play is responsible for her loss, and Maga pundits are following suit.
“Arizonans know Bs when they see it.” Lake tweeted shortly after major news outlets called the race against her.

Jimmy Kimmel was delighted on Monday’s episode of “Jimmy Kimmel Live!” about the results of the midterm election, and especially about how a lot of Republicans seem to be blaming Donald Trump for the historic failure of Republicans to muster up a “red wave.”
In his monologue, Kimmel first joked that Trump’s weekend was emotional both because of his daughter, Tiffany’s wedding, and the massive failures of his endorsed candidates. “He gave away a daughter and the Senate,” the host joked.
After that, he ran a fake ad for something that might help Republicans trying to get out from under Trump: a nicotine patch designed to break their addiction to Trump.
“On Saturday, Democrats officially won the Senate,” Kimmel noted, thanks to the victory of Democratic candidate Catherine Cortez Masto in Nevada. “Her victory gives the Democrats 50 seats, and Vice President Kamala Harris has the tie-breaking vote,...

Democratic candidate Katie Hobbs, who has vigorously defended abortion rights during her campaign, has defeated Republican Kari Lake, the Associated Press reports. Lake joins the overwhelming list of Maga wipeouts during the midterm elections.
Hobbs has defeated one of the most outspoken defenders of former President Donald Trump. Serving as Arizona’s Secretary of State, Hobbs has repeatedly rejected GOP lies about the election. Lake’s defeat follows the loss of two other high-profile election deniers — Republican Senate nominee Blake Masters and Secretary of State nominee Mark Finchem.

It’s been a headline-making weekend at the Kelly-Giffords household in Tucson, Arizona.
The couple celebrated the news Friday that Democratic Sen. Mark Kelly had been re-elected to his first full term representing Arizona, winning a tight contest with Republican Blake Masters. That bulletin was followed by the announcement today that CNN will premiere Gabby Giffords Won’t Back Down, the acclaimed documentary about the former Congresswoman, next Sunday, November 20.
The film from Oscar nominees Julie Cohen and Betsy West, documents Giffords’ arduous rehabilitation from a near-fatal shooting in January 2011, a tragic event that stopped her ascent as a rising star in the Democratic Party.

Tucker Carlson has a type. He likes hardline nationalists who can cosplay anti-elitism while pretending they didn’t go to an Ivy, or have an heiress mother, or have the richest people in the country funding their campaign. He likes the kind of candidate who blends hateful nativism and a fear of the impending collapse of Western Civilization, with mockery of blue-haired, cat-owning coastal liberals.
Turns out Tucker’s type may not be super electable.
As Republicans scramble to find an explanation for their poor midterm showing, finger pointing abounds.

Incumbent Senator Mark Kelly has defeated far-right Republican challenger Blake Masters, AP reports, denying conservatives a seat they sunk millions into and dealing yet another blow to former President Donald Trump’s endorsement power. Kelly’s win puts Democrats just one victory away from sealing control of the chamber and with Vice President Kamala Harris’ tie-breaking vote, their party can retain Senate control by cinching either the Nevada race or next month’s Georgia runoff.

Mark Kelly has been elected to a full six-year term in the U.S. Senate for the state of Arizona. The incumbent’s close victory puts the Democrats one vital step closer to continuing to control the upper chamber.
Three days after the midterm elections, CNN, Nnc and others declared the former astronaut, who was elected to the Senate in a special 2020 election, was on a solid trajectory to beat Republican challenger Blake Masters in the former home of John McCain. The race for Arizona governor is still too close to call, but Democrat Adrian Fontes has now been declared the winner for the state’s pivotal Secretary of State position over self-described Oath Keeper Mark Finchem.
Kelly’s seat was widely seen among the most vulnerable among all Democratic incumbents.

Stephen Colbert celebrated the absence of the “Red Wave” Republicans had predicted for the 2022 midterm elections with some laundry wordplay.
On Thursday’s show, “The Late Show” host rattled off the latest headlines on the topic, such as “The Red Wave Was More Like a Pink Splash.”
“It was a salmon drizzle, a rosy wash,” Colbert said. “It’s like what happens when you accidentally wash your Klan robes with your Maga hat.”

Colbert went on to recap the GOP’s reactions to the lack of a major sweep, including finger-pointing at Trump and some of his high-profile supporters. He read a report that the former president was “furious” at those who advised him to back Dr. Mehmet Oz, who lost to John Fetterman in the Pennsylvania senate race.

Voters did not deliver Republicans the decisive House and Senate victories the GOP anticipated on Tuesday night. Democratic House candidates held onto seats the GOP had been certain to capture. The only Senate seat that changed partisan hands as of Wednesday morning flipped turned blue, not red. For now, the outcome in dozens of House races and a handful of Senate seats remain uncertain, leaving the reins of each chamber unclaimed.

Update, 8:28 Am: Sen. Ron Johnson (R-wi) was projected to defeat Mandela Barnes to win reelection, according to CNN and other networks.
That raises the prospects that control of the U.S. Senate may come down to a runoff race in Georgia, where Sen. Raphael Warnock (D-ga) leads Republican Herschel Walker, but may fall short of the 50 threshold to win outright.
In the two other outstanding Senate races, Sen. Mark Kelly (D-az) leads in his reelection bid against Republican Blake Masters, but Sen. Catherine Cortez Masto (D-nv) trails Republican Adam Laxalt. If those hold, Democrats would need the Georgia seat to tie the Senate 50-50, which is the way things stand now.
Johnson’s victory is a significant defeat for Democrats, who viewed him as one of the GOP’s most vulnerable incumbents. But Johnson hammered Barnes on the issue of crime during the general election campaign, cutting into his polling lead.

Showbiz figures headlined online town halls, fund-raising appeals and campaign endorsements in the final effort before Tuesday’s midterm elections.
Midterm trends favor the party out of power, and polls suggest that Republicans may make substantial gains, particularly in winning control of the House.
But the difficult environment for Democrats did not depress fundraising this cycle. According to the Center for Responsive Politics, showbiz sources have donated almost 57 million to federal campaigns and committees, exceeding the level donated in the last midterm, 2018. Democrats drew 87 of the contributions and Republicans collected 13, more lopsided than any other midterm election since Crp has collected records.
The top candidate recipient of showbiz money was Sen. Raphael Warnock (D-ga), drawing about 1.2 million in contributions from entertainment sources in his effort to retain his seat against Republican Herschel Walker. The top donor was producer Ted Snowdon, who has donated more than 3 million to candidates and committees.

One of the primary criteria for Republicans looking to curry the favor of Donald Trump and his followers in a GOP primary is stating — and stating loudly — that the 2020 election was stolen from the former president.
New Hampshire Senate candidate Don Bolduc filled that criteria. “I signed a letter with 120 other generals and admirals saying Trump won the election, and damnit I stand by my word,” he said during an Aug. 14 GOP debate.
Bolduc won the state’s Republican primary on Tuesday, albeit barely, and will now face incumbent Democrat Sen.

Joe Biden Warns That Donald Trump And Maga Extremism Threaten “The Very Foundations Of Our Republic”
Joe Biden’s speech in Philadelphia on Thursday evening was a full-blown attack on Donald Trump and Maga Republicans that “represent an extremism that threatens the very foundations of our Republic.”
Despite White House suggestions that the address would not be political, it’s hard to not see how it would not be seen through a partisan lens, or that it even makes any difference.
Just as the midterms kick into high gear, Biden turned the attention on his 2020 rival, Trump, who, by endorsing candidates like Dr. Oz and Blake Masters, has given Democrats new hopes of avoiding a wipeout by highlighting their opponents’ weaknesses and wild statements.
Biden’s pitch was that, while he’s worked with plenty of Republicans when he was in the Senate and during his presidency, the driving force of the party is Trump, with an agenda of denying the results of free and fair elections and,...

Arizona has been a hotbed of false claims of election fraud since President Biden edged Donald Trump there in 2020. Many of the conservatives fueling these claims decided to see if they couldn’t get elected to positions of power so they can help rig future elections. The state’s Republican voters indulged them on Tuesday, handing the party’s nomination for Senate to Blake Masters and for secretary of state to Mark Finchem. However, as of early Wednesday morning, the race for the gubernatorial nomination remained too close to call,...

Donald Trump took aim at the Jan. 6 committee during a speech in Arizona Friday evening, painting the ongoing investigation into his actions on the day of the Capitol insurrection as a conspiratorial witch hunt designed to permanently blacklist him from politics.
“If I announced that I was not going to run any longer for political office, the persecution of Donald Trump would immediately stop,” he said. “They’re coming after me because I’m standing up for you.”

The Jan. 6 committee has, for the past few weeks, been reminding Americans about the horrifying “war scene” that unfolded during the attack on the Capitol. Some conservatives are ignoring the panel’s findings and dismissing the hearings as a distraction. Others are doubling down on political violence. Eric Greitens, a scandal-ridden Republican running for Senate in Missouri, released an ad on Monday advocating for “hunting” RINOs, or Republicans In Name Only, a term for conservatives who haven’t veered far enough to the right.
The ad is not subtle. It isn’t even metaphorical.

Blake Masters, whom former President Donald Trump recently endorsed for Senate in Arizona, said during a podcast appearance earlier this year that “Black people, frankly” are responsible for America’s gun violence problem.
“We do have a gun violence problem in this country, and it’s gang violence,” Masters said on the “Jeff Oravits Show” on April 11, the Daily Beast reported on Sunday. “It’s people in Chicago, St. Louis shooting each other. Very often, you know, Black people, frankly. And the Democrats don’t want to do anything about that.

Elise Stefanik is the third-ranking Republican in the House of Representatives. She is a member of the party’s leadership, in other words, elevated last year by Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy. She’s also one of a growing contingent of conservatives who have brushed up against the “great replacement” conspiracy theory, a white supremacist tenet holding that white people are being replaced by people of color and, politically speaking, that Democrats are deliberately trying to flood the U.S. with immigrants in order to gain an electoral advantage. Garrett Soldano released a pretty strange campaign ad last fall. The only words spoken in it came from a voice aggressively asking, “Who?” and a chorus twice chanting “We The People!” in response. The rest of the ad was 45 seconds of footage of Soldano firing various weapons at a gun range, set to a heavy, looping guitar riff.
Soldano is not running for sheriff, or even for a seat in the state House. He’s a Republican running to become the next governor of Michigan.

Despite being touted as an impressive streaming performer, Sneaky Pete has been given the axe from Amazon.
Sneaky Pete was unable to grift itself another season on Amazon Prime Video, which has canceled the series.
The series, the co-creation of Bryan Cranston and David Shore, launched on the streaming platform on August 7, 2015. It starred Giovanni Ribisi as Marius Josipovic, a smart, seedy con man who, initially upon his release from prison, dodges a debt to a dangerous gangster (Cranston) by posing as his cellmate, Pete Murphy, using all the stories he’s been told to ingratiate himself to the Bernhardts, Pete’s long-estranged Connecticut-based family, who run a bail bonds business. However, as we witness over the course of three seasons, Marius/Pete instinctually grifts his way out of problems; a practice that’s usually successful, but tends to spawn more problems and compounds others.

Sneaky Pete couldn’t sneak his way into another season: Amazon has cancelled the Giovanni Ribisi-led con man drama after three seasons, our sister site Variety reports.
The series, starring Ribisi as a crook who steals his cellmate’s identity and lies his way into a family of strangers after his release from prison, started out as a CBS pilot, getting picked up by Amazon after the Eye network passed. Co-creator David Shore (The Good Doctor) then stepped down as showrunner, and Graham Yost (Justified) was installed to retool the would-be procedural and transform it into a serialized drama,...

Amazon has opted not to order a fourth season of drama series Sneaky Pete.
For the most recent third season, which debuted May 10, production moved from New York to California with $9.2 million worth of Golden State tax credits. For Season 3, Blake Masters joined as new executive producer/showrunner, while executive producers Graham Yost, Fred Golan and Michael Dinner exited.
Created by Bryan Cranston and David Shore, Sneaky Pete starred Emmy nominee Giovanni Ribisi as con man Marius, who left prison only to find himself hunted by the vicious gangster he once robbed. With nowhere else to turn, he took cover from his past by assuming the identity of his cellmate Pete, “reuniting” with Pete’s estranged family.
Emmy winner Margo Martindale, Marin Ireland, Peter Gerety, Libe Barer and Shane McRae co-starred in the drama, which originated as a CBS pilot. It did not go to series at the broadcast network but,...

“Sneaky Pete” is coming to an end.
The crime drama, which was co-created by Bryan Cranston and starred Giovanni Ribisi, has been canceled after three seasons on Amazon.

The series was primarily set in upstate New York, with much of the action also in and around New York City. It also starred Marin Ireland, Margo Martindale, Peter Gerety, Libe Barer, and Shane McRae.
Blake Masters was the showrunner on season 3, after taking over for Graham Yost. Cranston also executive produced along with James Degus. Exclusive: There will be no second miraculous renewal for USA Network’s supernatural thriller drama Falling Water. The cable network has opted not to order a third season of the series, from the late Henry Bromell, Brotherhood creator Blake Masters, The Walking Dead executive producer Gale Anne Hurd and Juan Carlos Fresnadillo.
For two seasons, Falling Water has been USA’s lowest-rated series in linear ratings, averaging 461,000 viewers and 0.14 adults 18-49 rating in Live+Same Day in Season 1 and slipping to 349,000 viewers and a 0.09 in Season 2.
Based on its linear ratings, Falling Water should’ve been canceled after the first season. But Its dense mythology, solid 30% L+3 DVR gains and steady viewership during Season 1 made the series a solid binge prospect for a streaming service. It was taken out and landed a deal with Amazon for exclusive Svod rights. The pact helped secure a Season 2 renewal by USA.

Take another look @ Universal's new dramatic fantasy series "Falling Water", from executive producers Gale Anne Hurd ("The Walking Dead"), Blake Masters ("Brotherhood") and Henry Bromell ("Homeland"), debuting October 13, 2016 on USA:
"....'Falling Water' is the story of three unrelated people, who slowly realize that they are dreaming separate parts of a single common dream.
"Each of them is on a mysterious and highly personal quest — one is searching for his missing girlfriend, one is searching for a lost child, one is looking to cure his catatonic mother...and it is the clues found in their collective dream that come to guide them.
"The deeper they dig, though, the more they come to realize that their missions touch on stakes that are much larger than their individual agendas.
"That the visions found in their common dream just might hold the key to the fate of the world..."
