7.7 Valerie Solanas Died For Your Sins: Scumbag
Going by the reaction of the Internet, hundreds of people were injured when Lena Dunham was announced as joining the cast of American Horror Story: Cult. Most of these injuries were caused by violent, forceful rolling of the eyes. I was one of the eye-rollers. I watched Dunham's show Girls for several seasons, only to fall away from it when the self-indulgence got to be a bit too much for me. Dunham, never afraid of being controversial, has brought a lot of backlash onto herself. She makes deliberately provocative statements and shocking admissions in public, tends to...

7.5 Holes
Way back in Murder House, I praised American Horror Story for the show's penchant to introduce some kind of plot contrivance, then immediately follow up on it. There weren't a lot of dragged-out elements; something was introduced, then it was followed up on, and that was basically how most of the season went. Pay-offs weren't delayed, but there was a continual process of setting up dominoes, then toppling them, and setting up more dominoes that drove the first season forward all the way until the ending (which I maintain was satisfying, particularly given how some seasons have sputtered to a halt).
Cult hasn't been quite as crisp as Murder House was in that regard,...

There's one question that will derail any found footage movie, television show, or radio programme (if such a thing exists). That question is one that nay-sayers bring up to deflate the fun of those who can suspend disbelief: why are they still filming if they're running from (insert villain here)? Valiantly, rather than avoid this question, Crystal Liu's script faces it head on and gives every character motivation to be present back at the scene of the nightmare.
Some of the characters are motivated by simple greed.

The Writers Guild of America has just announced the nominations for their annual awards for Best Screenplays (by writers who are guild signatories). That’s right, before you get nervous thinking that your favorite may have been left off the list, you must remember that the WGA is the group that is not all-inclusive and leaves out several of the top contenders each year due to them not being part of the guild or not following their very specific rules. For this reason, you won’t see Inside Out, The Hateful Eight, and Ex Machina in the Original Screenplay category or Room, Brooklyn, or Anomalisa in the Adapted screenplay category.
Taking a look at what’s left over for the nominations, we find many that were expected to make a showing, including Spotlight and Bridge of Spies for Original Screenplay, though they apparently had to sink to really low depths...

5.7 Flicker
I absolutely love it when American Horror Story uses film-making style to help tell their story. It's not a question of the way the characters dress or the way the sets are displayed, but a question of actual technical techniques. A significant portion of Flicker is devoted to the life and times of a very young Countess—long before she was the Countess—as a fresh-faced Italian girl from Bensonhurst, Brooklyn who made her way out to Hollywood to become a star on the silver screen. A chance appearance as a harem girl leads to a meeting that will change young Countess's life forever as she finds herself wooed by the most famous lover in history, Rudolph Valentino (Finn Wittrock, playing a new role) and his glamorous wife,...

Don't get complacent. American Horror Story is still capable of surprising - and horrifying - its audience. Here's Ron's review...

4.7 Test Of Strength
I though it was safe to tune into American Horror Story. I really did. After last week's threatening stance towards Ma Petite, I figured she would be safe. Test Of Strength only reinforced that, as Dell went around the camp looking for an innocent victim to avoid further blackmail by Stanley, who knows that Dell frequents Jupiter's one gay bar. The episode teases it perfectly. Dell first goes after Eve, who promptly beats the crap out of him because she's 6'8 and possibly the worst possible target for Dell's violence. The second target is Jimmy, which works out well for him, but not in the “I need to kill someone so no one finds out I'm gay” sense.
The Jimmy and Dell scene is surprisingly effective.

American Horror Story: Freak Show, Episode 7: “Test of Strength”
Written by Jessica Sharzer
Directed by Michael Uppendahl
Airs Wednesdays at 10pm Et on FX
Freak Show’s storytelling has frequently revolved around balancing character development between stories. Similar to Game of Thrones, the season has featured a variety of small plot arcs based on different characters and they’ve coalesced to make the mosaic that is the show. This week’s episode, “Test of Strength,” features Dell to a greater extent than the season has previously, and particularly his relationship with Jimmy. Unfortunately, his character is not nearly as interesting as others that the show has explored.
The episode’s title refers to the carnival strength game where the episode first shows Dell engaged in a verbal duel with Stanley. He lets Dell know that he knows about his fondness for the gay bar, and he threatens to share...
