Jenny Slate is one of today’s most frenetic stand-ups. She begins her latest special, Seasoned Professional (Feb. 23 on Prime Video), like a bottle rocket, eventually sending her mic stand flying with wild gesticulation and delivering a primal scream of love for her therapist. Offstage, Slate seems downright Zen and reflective about a still-young career. “I want to act forever, to keep generating new material,” she says over Zoom in early February. “But that ‘hitting some quota to make sure people know I’m here’ kind of ambition … that’s burned away. What remains is a steady sense of who I am and an excitement about the skill set I’ve developed.”
That skill set is diverse. After a season on Saturday Night Live in 2009, Slate fronted the breakout dramedy Obvious Child, appeared in an eclectic string of features (Joshy, Venom, Everything Everywhere All at Once), stole scenes on Parks & Recreation...

Jenny Slate is returning to one of her most beloved creative outlets: Processing deep personal change through writing the sort of book that only she could write. The comedian, actress, producer and New York Times best-selling author will release her second essay collection Lifeform on Oct. 22. Slate will tackle her journey through motherhood in all its nearly impossible-to-describe strangeness, complexity and life-altering beauty.
“Completing this new work was a singular pleasure,” she says. “I dove deep, and I think I’ve surfaced more alive than ever, and I am so eager to share it all with anyone who is willing and ready. I know I am!”
The book follows her 2019 debut Little Weirds, which began as a creative exercise in the wake of her 2016 divorce and eventually explored more abstract topics from her life like her relationships with love and feminism and the home in which she grew up. Lifeform...

Julianne Moore, the guest on this episode of The Hollywood Reporter’s Awards Chatter podcast, is one of the greatest screen actresses of her time, or any other. The winner of an Oscar, an Emmy and a BAFTA Award, two SAG, Golden Globe and Spirit awards and three National Board of Review and Critics Choice awards, she has also been awarded the best actress prizes of the Berlin, Cannes and Venice film festivals. She has rarely been part of a film or TV project that wasn’t at least very good, and in which she herself wasn’t great.
Moore’s latest film, May December, is no exception. A Netflix dramedy in which the star plays a woman married to a much younger man (Charles Melton), who was underage when they first hooked up 20 years earlier. Her character is now being observed by a Hollywood actress (Natalie Portman), who is...

While the past decade has brought an exponential rise in streaming services, none compare to Netflix’s catalog of stand-up specials. The streamer has become the go-to destination for the most popular comedians in the world. Its ubiquity has made watching stand-up easier than ever and helped launch comedy stars like John Mulaney, Hannah Gadsby and Ali Wong with high-profile specials.
But like the rest of its content, it can be hard navigating the field with so many great offerings. So if you’re in need of a laugh while scrolling through Netflix, here’s a list of some of the best stand-up comedy specials streaming right now.
John Mulaney: “Kid Gorgeous” (2018)
Every John Mulaney special has at least a few bits that will never leave your head but “Kid Gorgeous” is a collection of some of his best. This is the special that put Mulaney on the path of comedy culture domination.

It took a village of 10 visual effects houses, including Weta FX and Framestore, and 3066 visual effects shots to help bring James Gunn’s “Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3” to life over 15 months of post-production.
From studying baby raccoons for the backstory of Rocket (voiced by Bradley Cooper) to golden retrievers for talking dog Cosmo, the VFX supervisors spent months putting together the sequences — some with explosions and complex action, including the film’s already iconic two-minute one-shot scene timed perfectly to the beats of the Beastie Boys’ “No Sleep Till Brooklyn.”
The teams break down the process behind some of their VFX magic and how they navigated some of the most challenging scenes.
Cosmo Cosmo (voiced by Maria Bakalova)
When it came to creating Cosmo, the photoreal dog voiced by Maria Bakalova, Stephane Naze, VFX supervisor for Framestore, says the team pulled together photos and footage of a real dog and made it CG.

Maria Bakalova may be relatively new to the "Guardians of the Galaxy" franchise, but you can't say she's not committed to her role. The actress best known for her performances in movies like "Borat Subsequent Moviefilm" and "Bodies Bodies Bodies" made her Marvel debut in "The Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special" last year, playing the friendly space dog Cosmo. Though Cosmo isn't exactly the star of the Guardians team, she pretty much immediately became a fan favorite, thanks in part to Bakalova's chipper voice coming from the Russian Golden Retriever. Bakalova lent more than her voice to the role, though; she also gave a motion capture performance that she says allowed her to get in touch with her imagination.

"Big Mouth," Netflix's animated sitcom about puberty and all the gross, awkward experiences that it brings, is finally coming to end with its eighth and final season. Netflix revealed the news before the premiere of season 7, which has not yet been released. That means we have two seasons left of the show, most likely due in thanks to its previous success, and fans can look forward to many more episodes before "Big Mouth" ends.
"Big Mouth" was created by longtime friends Nick Kroll and Andrew Goldberg, as well as Mark Levin and Jennifer Flackett, and is based on the former pair's suburban childhoods growing up in Westchester County outside of New York City. The series is known for its frank and open portrayal of taboo topics related to sex and sexuality, all told through the main characters' interactions with the wildly horny psychological manifestations of their puberty known as the Hormone Monsters.
