Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes is now playing in theaters, which means key plot details have begun to find their way online.
In a new interview with THR, star Freya Allan (Mae) discusses the ending and how the original conclusion played out in far less subtle - and quite a bit darker - fashion.
Major spoilers follow.
During the climactic battle, Mae makes a fateful decision to blow open the floodgates and destroy the human tech the villainous Proximus was trying to get his hands on, killing hundreds of apes in the process.
“It’s not what she wants to do," Allan explains. "But it’s that, or Proximus has all these weapons and humanity is screwed. She’s gone through so much, she’s lost all the people she cares about, which was a large part of how I justified everything that she did,” Allan says. “So...

On Monday April 22, 20th Century Studios’ all-new action-adventure spectacle, Kingdom Of The Planet Of The Apes, made a trip to Venice Beach to get some sun, catch some waves and promote the film to onlookers lucky enough to be there. The apes on horseback was a clever idea and looked very reminiscent of the original 1968 film Planet Of The Apes.
The film opens in movie theaters globally on May 10, 2024, and will be available in IMAX®, Dolby Cinema®, 4Dx, and premium screens everywhere. Be among the first to see Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes on the big screen at the early access screening on May 8th.

It may not be hitting theaters in North America until next month, but the Amy Winehouse biopic "Back to Black" is off to a solid start at the box office overseas. The film opened in the U.K. and Ireland this past weekend, and it managed to top the charts in the territory, coming in ahead of Alex Garland's "Civil War," which topped the domestic charts with a $26 million debut, as well as "Kung Fu Panda 4." It's an impressive start, but how will the film fare when it arrives in the U.S. in May?
Director Sam Taylor-Johnson's "Back to Black" topped the U.K./Ireland charts with $3.36 million (£2.7m). That was above "Kung Fu Panda 4," which was in its third weekend in the territory, while "Civil War" had to settle for third place. Given that Winehouse is a London-born artist, it's not necessarily a shock...

The Oscars are a cruel, selective beast. With only 10 movies recognized in the Best Picture race, and five entries in every other category, it’s an unfortunate reality that many high quality, deserving films each year will end up with nothing on nomination day.
The 2024 Oscar class is no different, with plenty of cries of snubbery coming out after their January 23 announcement. Most of the discussion has been taken up by the shocking blanks for Margot Robbie and Greta Gerwig, who missed out on Best Actress and Best Director respectively for their work on “Barbie,” the indisputable film juggernaut of the year. Other major surprises included Charles Melton missing out for his breakout turn in “May December,” and Leonardo DiCaprio getting left out of the Best Actor race for “Killers of the Flower Moon.” Other surprises proved of the more pleasant sort, with on-the-bubble contenders making it in like Robbie...

Over the first half of “Tokyo Vice” Season 2, Ken Watanabe’s harried detective looks, to put it mildly, like absolute dogshit. Puffy bags threaten to swallow his eyes. Peppered stubble creeps across his chin and cheeks. Watch closely and you’ll swear you can see his hair falling out, one withered strand at a time. While likely frowned upon by his superiors, Detective Hiroto Katagiri’s shabby appearance is justified. At work, he’s been relegated to demeaning desk duty, promising clueless citizens he’ll find out where the yakuza has taken their cat. At home, he’s been living alone for months, smoking silently in an empty bed, gazing out into the darkness for any signs of danger — and danger is out there. His family is in hiding because, when not busy catnapping, the yakuza is threatening to kill them. If they feel Katagiri snooping around in their business,...

International voting pool continues to make impact
Before Zazie Beetz and Jack Quaid began reciting – with evident delight – this year’s nominations, Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences president Janet Yang announced that votes had been cast from a record 93 countries among the 11,000-strong Academy membership.
This internationalist perspective can most obviously be seen in strong showings for Justine Triet’s French-language Anatomy Of A Fall (more on that below) and Jonathan Glazer’s German-language The Zone Of Interest, and that in the documentary feature category four of the five nominated films are foreign-language titles: Ukraine’s 20 Days In Mariupol,...

The 2024 Oscar nominations were announced on Tuesday morning and included some shocking snubs in the acting races. Our overall odds at Gold Derby predicted 85% of the nominees for Best Actress, Best Actor, Best Supporting Actress and Best Supporting Actor. While we aced the Best Actor category, we missed one nominee in each of the other races contending for the 96th Academy Awards.
Three SAG Awards nominated performers aren’t in contention at the Oscars: lead Margot Robbie (“Barbie”) and supporting players Penelope Cruz (“Ferrari”) and Willem Dafoe (“Poor Things”).
Benefiting from one of those ruthless snubs was Sandra Huller (“Anatomy of a Fall”), who ranked third in our odds despite being ignored by the guild. According to our odds, it was Annette Bening who was the surprise here for “Nyad.” The veteran was ranked seventh despite Golden Globe and SAG Award nominations earlier this year. America Ferrera (“Barbie”) snuck in over Cruz,...

Is it just me, or is this a particularly tough year to pick nominees in the buzziest of the 23 categories for the Academy Awards? This will be the 96th time they do the Oscars, and it never gets easier. Even the most experienced awards handicapper has only a slight advantage over the greenest neophyte, because at the end of the day we’re all still just guessing. And you know there will be surprises and snubs aplenty, because how could there not?
With this in mind, here are some things that are guaranteed to happen bright and early (5:30 a.m. Pt/8:30 a.m. Et) tomorrow when the 2024 Oscar nominations are announced:
These will be the 10 Best Picture nominees: “Oppenheimer,” “Poor Things,” “Killers of the Flower Moon,” “Barbie,” “Maestro,” “American Fiction,” “The Holdovers,” “Anatomy of a Fall,” “The Zone of Interest” and “Past Lives.” As much as it kills me,...

It’s called a Napoleon complex for a reason.
With the first round of Oscar voting closing out, I spent the long MLK weekend catching up on narrative films I’ve yet to see. Yes. I know. I’m a little late to the party, but my day job of watching other people’s amazing docs has bled into my evenings of watching other people’s amazing narrative features.
Among the films, I watched Mr. Ridley Scott’s Napoleon with our older son.

Oscars scorecard: ‘Oppenheimer’ still leads, ‘Killers of Flower Moon’ and ‘Poor Things’ right behind
It’s a two-in-one round today as both the Screen Actors’ Guild and the Directors’ Guild announced their nominations on January 10, further contributing to this 35 boxes theory.
This test tracks 35 key races across awards season, aiming to give us some insight into which films are earning the strongest industry-wide support. The idea is, the more boxes you tick, the stronger your chances of winning Best Picture at the Oscars, with each box detailing a key nomination or win at various guilds and awards groups throughout awards season.
For example, in 2019, “Green Book” won 23 of these 35 boxes before winning Best Picture at the Oscars. Conversely, “Roma” filled in only 19 boxes while both “BlacKkKlansman” and “The Favourite” were at 20. Each of the three previous Best Picture winners prior to “Green Book” numbered among the top three entries on our season-end charts.
Check out the standings below after the SAG and DGA nominations.

The Screen Actors Guild Awards nominations were announced on Wednesday, Jan. 10, and the actors guild recognized 12 different studios across its 6 film categories. Three led the pack with the biggest nominations tallies: Warner Bros. Pictures with six, Netflix with 5, and Universal Pictures with 4.
Warner Bros. haul was comprised of two films: “Barbie,” which netted four noms, and “The Color Purple,” which scored two. Both made it into the highly competitive Film Ensemble lineup, and “Barbie” got an extra boost with a bid in the Stunt Ensemble category. Netflix is the runner up with five nominations from films “Maestro,” “Nyad” and “Rustin.” Although none of those films made it into the Ensemble race, they scored key individual acting citations for leads Bradley Cooper, Carey Mulligan, Annette Bening and Colman Domingo and supporting performer Jodie Foster. Universal earned four mentions, all for the Christopher Nolan film “Oppenheimer.”

The 2024 SAG Awards nominations were announced on Wednesday, January 10. The 29th annual SAG Awards, honoring the best movie and TV performances for the year 2023, will be handed out during a ceremony in Los Angeles on Sunday, February 24.
Last year, the guild previewed only 12 of the 20 nominees for acting at the Oscars. That was way off its usual rate of success. In 2021, it went 16 for 20. That was up from the 14 of 20 it matched in 2020. In both 2018 and 2019, SAG hit 75% (15 of 20). And in both 2015 and 2017, it did even better going 17 for 20. However, in 2016 SAG previewed only a lucky 13 Academy Awards contenders.
The SAG Awards roster was decided by a randomly selected nominations panel comprising 2,500 members of the merged Screen Actors Guild and American Federation of Television and Radio Artists unions. The winners will be decided by all 121,000 members of SAG-AFTRA.

Penélope Cruz has no plans at the moment to slip into spandex and a cape, but the Oscar winner says she’d love to do a superhero movie. “If it’s something interesting, why not? It’s fun,” Cruz told me Friday at Variety’s 10 Directors to Watch brunch at the Parker Palm Springs. “As you could imagine, that’s what my kids ask me sometimes, ‘Are you ever going to do that, mom?’ Because I’ve done so much drama and so many films I can’t show to them yet.”

What is probably happening soon is a musical movie. Cruz teased that she’s probably going to start filming a musical any day now. “I’m going to do one soon, I think,” she said. “I...

From Ridley Scott’s Napoleon to Michael Mann’s Ferrari, this has been a year of biopics about men, by men. But it’s the female powerhouses who deserve equal billing
They say that behind every great man is a great woman. But this has been a year of biopics in which wives have emerged from the great men’s shadows to challenge their menfolk for equal billing. Being yoked to a male “genius” is tough, and the female characters in Oppenheimer, Napoleon, Maestro, Ferrari and Priscilla let them know it. When Leonard Bernstein (Bradley Cooper) gets sloppy about hiding his homosexual affairs from his family, Felicia Montealegre Bernstein (Carey Mulligan) lets rip with: “Your truth is a fucking lie. It sucks up all the energy in every room.”
Maestro raises the question of whether the infidelity is a vital part of creativity, or if artistic achievement is just a...

Michael Mann is back with his new film Ferrari after a hiatus of 8 years. Having closely followed his filmography for years, Michael Mann is one of those directors who has constantly innovated himself and pushed the envelopes of traditional story-telling coupled with the use of new movie technologies. He was one of the first to accept that movies will move to being shot in digital format versus on film at a time when Hollywood was at crossroads whether to accept but he accepted it pretty quickly and moved on. So, my expectations for Ferrari was high and I ended up being quite disappointed. On the surface, Ferrari appears to be a well-made, well-acted and with excellent racing sequences. However, throughout the film, I couldn’t help but feel disinterested and dissatisfied. There was a sense of laziness in terms of making some scenes more exciting to watch. This film had...

Adam Driver is tired of defending his recent roles.
In the last two years, the 40-year-old Oscar-nominated actor has played two famous Italian figures – first playing Maurizio Gucci in 2021′s House of Gucci then playing Enzo Ferrari in 2023′s Ferrari.
While speaking with Will Arnett, Jason Bateman, and Sean Hayes on their Smartless podcast, Adam hit back at constantly being asked if the roles should have gone to real Italian actors.
Keep reading to find out more…
The conversation about the two roles came up after Adam explained that he hasn’t been very strategic in the types of acting roles he takes on.
He then joked that playing Gucci then Ferrari was “a good example of not being strategic in a way that I probably should.”
“So many people have been like, ‘How many Italians — ?’ I’m like, it’s just kind of worked out that way,” Adam said,...

It has been 8 years since Michael Mann last had a film in cinemas, the hugely underrated Blackhat. Now he is back, and we can only hope he doesn’t have another 8-year gap between movies. Now he is telling the story of Enzo Ferrari, the founder of the iconic car brand. The film takes aim and focuses on the summer of 1957 when Ferrari’s passion in his personal life, and passion for his work, head towards crisis.
Adam Driver is Enzo Ferrari, and as he has many times before, he becomes the man himself. Only a few moments into the film, the image of Driver fades away and we are only left with the presence of Enzo Ferrari. A deeply complicated man throughout,...

Content warning: This article discusses the death of a child and contains spoilers for "Ferrari."
Director Michael Mann is back with his first feature film since 2015's "Blackhat." This time, the acclaimed filmmaker is bringing a long-gestating passion project to the big screen in the form of "Ferrari," a biopic about famed car maker Enzo Ferrari, played by Adam Driver. Specifically, it chronicles a very tumultuous period for the historical figure that takes place in the summer of 1957. It all leads up to one of the most horrific accidents in the history of racing — one that Mann captured on screen in gruesome detail.
Anyone who has seen the movie knows the scene: Alfonso de Portago (portrayed by Gabriel Leone in the film) is racing in the Mille Miglia during the film's climax. After his tire is punctured, the car is flung into the air and smashes into a group of onlookers,...

Penelope Cruz “cried” because of the “sad energy” in Laura Ferrari’s bedroom. The 49-year-old actress found a visit to the apartment where her ‘Ferrari’ alter ego lived incredibly helpful for informing her role in the biopic because it made her understand how the woman felt following the end of her marriage and the death of her son.She told Empire magazine: “It was a lot of colours that were supposed to be happy but to me it had a very sad energy.“I started to cry, understanding what it would be like for this woman spending so much time hiding in that room, missing her son and missing what she had in that relationship with Enzo.“There was something that happened to in that room and I think it also happened to Michael [Mann, director].”The filmmaker ended up exactly replicating the wallpaper they had found in the bedroom.Penelope said:...
