The Drake-Kendrick Lamar showdown will continue — at the 2024 BET Awards.
The rappers will compete in two categories at the June 30 show: best male hip-hop artist and best collaboration. In the latter category, Drake is nominated for “Rich Baby Daddy” with Sza and Sexyy Red, while Lamar is nominated for his guest verse on the remix of Beyoncé’s “America Has a Problem.”
Drake is the show’s top contender with seven nominations, thanks to his album For All the Dogs (Scary Hours Edition). Lamar didn’t release an album that was eligible this year. The Canadian rapper’s other nominations include album of the year, best male R&b/pop artist and viewer’s choice for “Rich Baby Daddy.” He’s nominated twice in the video of the year category: “Rich Baby Daddy” and his guest verse on J. Cole’s “First Person Shooter,” the late 2023 track that reignited his feud with Lamar.

Tiwa Savage has long held a unique position in African music as the leading female artist in the Afrobeats genius. After headlining global tours, collaborating with Beyoncé and Brandy and championing newcomers, Savage Tiwa is embarking on her next venture: starring in and executive producing her debut full-length feature film, “Water and Garri.”
The film, slated for global debut on Prime Video on May 10, follows Aisha, a successful fashion designer, as she returns to Nigeria after a decade in the United States. Non-profit organization Artist Rights Alliance has issued an open letter focused on the rise of AI in music, signed by over 200 prominent names in the music industry, including Billie Eilish, Pearl Jam, Greta Van Fleet, Jason Isbell, Katy Perry, Nicki Minaj,Elvis Costello, Jon Batiste, and Stevie Wonder.
Under the call to “stop devaluing music,” the letter states, “Some of the biggest and most powerful companies are, without permission, using our work to train AI models. These efforts are directly aimed at replacing the work of human artists with massive quantities of AI-created ‘sounds’ and ‘images’ that substantially dilute the royalty pools that are paid out to artists.”
Beyond potential royalty and revenue losses, the letter goes on to push back against the “assault on human creativity” posed by AI. “Unchecked, AI will set in motion a race to the bottom that will degrade the value of our work,” the document reads.

The explosion of Afrobeats has been one of the biggest stories in the music industry over the past five years, with acts like Burna Boy, Davido, Asake, and Tems becoming global superstars. As Africa’s musical imprint around the world continues to become more prominent, its artists now have a Grammy category all to themselves: Best African Music Performance.
“It makes sense, given that reggae or spoken word have their own categories,” says Gracey Mae, a U.K.-based PR and marketing consultant and Recording Academy member who co-authored the proposal for the award.

Consider Afrobeats, a broad subgenre under the even broader umbrella of African pop, which earned 2.5 billion streams by the midpoint of 2023, per Luminate, an entertainment analytics company. That represented a 34 percent jump in streams over the year before. All of this newfound attention has made for great music, collaborations, and Irl spaces to jam — from Atlanta to Amsterdam to Abuja — but has also raised concerns around ownership, opportunities,...

The 2023 VMAs are right around the corner, set to air live on Tuesday night, September 12, with many categories pitting some of the year’s biggest hits against some of the biggest fanbases in the industry. So who will win genre prizes for Best Hip-Hop, Best K-Pop, Best Latin and Best Afrobeats? Read on for a breakdown of each category.
SEESean ‘Diddy’ Combs will receive Global Icon Award at 2023 VMAs
Best Hip-Hop
Nicki Minaj’s “Super Freaky Girl” is an easy winner here. Not only is it the biggest hit, peaking atop the Billboard Hot 100 singles chart, Minaj is also arguably the most popular star in the category. So she likely has the largest fanbase out of the nominees and will thus get a hefty amount of support from her hardcore stans and casual voters alike. “Super Freaky Girl” is also the only nominee here that’s also up for Video of the Year.

Tori Kelly’s release plans for her latest project, a return to her particular blend of pop and R&b titled Tori, were briefly derailed late last month. The weekend before its arrival, the singer had to shift her focus toward recovering after a blood clot-related collapse landed her in the ICU. She had to cancel her release show, but now that she’s feeling better, she’s planning on jumping right back into the game next month with a North American tour.
“It’s been too long,” Kelly wrote on Instagram.
