The 54th International Film Festival of India (Iffi), Goa, concluded on Tuesday with Hollywood veteran Michael Douglas accepting the Satyajit Ray lifetime achievement award for excellence in cinema.
Previous winners of the award include Martin Scorsese, Bernardo Bertolucci, Dilip Kumar, Carlos Saura, Krzysztof Zanussi and Wong Kar-wai.
“It’s a tremendous honor to receive this award, a career life achievement. When I heard about the award, my family and I were elated,” said Douglas, who was accompanied by wife Catherine Zeta Jones and their son Dylan Douglas. The 54th edition of International Film Festival of India willbe held from 20th to 28th November in Goa.
“We had some meetings and I met the Chief Minister to discuss the preparation of Iffi. He has directed officials to complete work at earliest,” Murugan said while talking to reporters after meeting Chief Minister Pramod Sawant.
He said that last year’s delegate registration was a proof of the festival’s popularity. “We expect a record number of registrations this year,” he said.
“The popularity of Iffi has grown year by year after Goa was declared the permanent venue for the festival. This year as well, we are expecting more growth in terms of the festival’s popularity,” Murugan said.

The meeting was chaired by Union Minister for Information and Broadcasting, Anurag Thakur, in the presence of other committee members.

Last year in November, the nine-day gala event featured 280 films from 79 countries.

In his remarks at the gala event, Sawant said that Goa was keen to host the National Games for the last ten years. “This is coming into reality now and we are fully prepared for it. Along with required infrastructure, even human resources is ready to host this sports event,” he said.
He said that Goa had hosted football games much before the liberation of the coastal state and there are many sportsmen here.

Panaji, May 12 (Ians) Subsequent to incidents of water tankers transporting sewage ‘caught red-handed’ by people in south Goa, the Congress has demanded to make mandatory colour codes for water tankers in the coastal state.

South Goa Member of Parliament Francisco Sardinha on Wednesday said that there is no issue giving Mhadei water for drinking purposes, but Karnataka’s main aim behind diverting water is for steel plants.
Addressing a press conference, Congress leader Sardinha said that if the water is diverted for irrigation purposes, then Goa will suffer.
“We have no problem if the water is taken for drinking purposes. But we can’t allow it for irrigation purposes. Karnataka’s main aim to divert Mhadei water is for steel plants,” Sardinha said.
