Los Angeles, March 10 (Ians) Priyanka Chopra Jonas was the star at a special screening of ‘To Kill A Tiger’, a soul-searing documentary feature by the Indian-Canadian Emmy-winning director Nisha Pahuja in the race for an Oscar, but the spotlight was on Ranjit, a Jharkhand farmer who’s the ‘hero’ of the film.
In the words of TV actor Sahil Salathia, who attended the exclusive screening on Saturday night at the Netflix headquarters in Los Angeles and Instagrammed about it: “Ranjit ji is an Indian farmer who supported his daughter (right till the end!) who was traumatised by life and the society. We need more role models like him in India.”
Highlighting what Ranjit, who is all set to attend the Oscars gala at LA’s Dolby Theater, was up against, Sahil wrote: “It is not easy knowing that three men in Jharkhand gang raped your 13-year-old daughter and the village...

The sheer popularity of the International Film Festival of India (Iffi) is leading to its expansion this year, while sister event Film Bazaar, South Asia’s largest content market, will have a focus on new technology, one of the country’s top film officials has revealed.
The Indian government-backed events run in parallel in Goa in November each year in close geographic proximity.
In 2022, demand for tickets at the public-facing Iffi was so strong that reservations had to be paused on the second day of the festival. “We are trying to expand Iffi to such a scale where we will be able to accommodate more films, more people, more venues,” Prithul Kumar, Joint Secretary, Films, Ministry of Information and Broadcasting and MD, National Film Development Corporation, told Variety. Efforts are on to add at least three more venues, Kumar said.

All That Breathes. When Rintu Thomas and Sushmit Ghosh decided to mount an Oscar campaign in October 2021 for their film Writing with Fire, they were attempting a historic first. Until then, no Indian documentary feature had ever been on the radar for the Academy Awards. The general assumption has always been that India had only one category to gun for: Best International Feature Film. Every year since 1957, the Film Federation of India (Ffi), an apex body comprising Indian film producers, exhibitors, distributors, and studio owners, has appointed a committee to select the country’s official submission from the year’s releases. These selections have often proved to be arbitrary decisions, rarely standing a chance at even making the shortlist, primarily due to a vague selection process that lacks credibility. In the last six decades, only three Indian submissions—Mother India (1957), Salaam Bombay (1988), and Lagaan (2001)—actually ended up with a nomination.

AnalysisFrom the threat of undesirable interactions with the wildlife that endanger their lives to the systemic tribal acculturation to Hinduism, there is much more to the lives of Kattunayakars than caring for gentle elephant calves, writes Nithya Pandian.ScreengrabIn an interview with the Mid-Day around two months ago, filmmaker Kartiki Gonsalves said she wanted to “give the indigenous people of the forest a voice,” and “capture their symbiotic relationship with their habitat” through her Oscar-winning documentary short The Elephant Whisperers. She also wanted to focus on the positives alone, she said, since “every story talked about man-animal conflicts.” As a developmental journalist who has been reporting on the concerns of indigenous communities in Nilgiris and Anamalai for years, I wonder how difficult it must have been to handpick these positives from an otherwise overwhelmingly negative situation, that holds little hope for tribal emancipation. There is something to be said about...

The Elephant Whisperers producer Guneet Monga says ‘India’s moment was taken away from me’ at Oscars
The Elephant Whisperers producer Guneet Monga has opened up about being cut off before she could deliver her Oscars acceptance speech.
The 39-year-old producer, who won the Academy Award in the Best Documentary Short film category, was upset by the moment that also caused uproar among film fans.
Footage of the incident showed Monga holding an Oscar and waiting for director Kartiki Gonsalves to end her speech. However, as she approached the mic, the exit music began playing and both women were escorted off-stage.
The moment also caused controversy among fans, with many pointing out that Matthew Freud and Charlie Mackesy, who accepted The Boy, The Mole, The Fox and The Horse’s win for Best Animated Short, were given ample time to make their speeches after The Elephant Whisperers.
“There was a shock on my face,” Monga has now told Bombay Times.

Nearly a week after the Oscars, the disappointment of a missed opportunity still weighs heavily on the minds of some South Asian American dancers, who are setting out to ensure it never happens again.
Many in the South Asian dance community were dismayed by the astonishing dearth of South Asian representation in the ‘Naatu Naatu’ performance at Sunday’s Academy Awards.

To have a film centered on a Chinese American family, and more specifically the conflict between an immigrant mother and her queer daughter, win the Oscar for Best Picture is undeniably a sign of progress in the movement to get the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences to recognize more art that comes from people from marginalized backgrounds.
On Sunday night, “Everything Everywhere All at Once” made Academy Awards history on multiple fronts, most of all with lead Michelle Yeoh becoming the first Asian woman to ever win Best Actress. Her victory ended a 21 year streak of all white winners since African American actress Halle Berry became the first woman of color to win the award in 2002. Similarly, her co-star Ke Huy Quan became the second Asian man to win Best Supporting Actor, nearly 40 years after “The Killing Fields” star Haing S. Ngor became the first.

Vanity Fair’s annual Oscar party took place Sunday at the Wallis Annenberg Center for the Performing Arts in Beverly Hills. I have all the details from inside the event, which as usual attracted the most elite of the Hollywood set who poured in after watching Everything Everywhere All at Once score seven Oscar trophies including Best Picture.
We managed to get our hands on the guest list for the event, held in a 3,000-square-foot indoor reception area, with additional courtyards and other outdoor lounge spaces. The main bar, a prime gathering spot, was 40 feet long. The guests danced into the early-morning hours.

Three years after “Parasite” became the first non-English-language movie to win Best Picture, the Oscars went international across many categories, and turned the ceremony into a global village. The evening reflected an awards season and industry where Hollywood matters more as a portal and less as a source. Not everyone is happy about this — on Facebook, Paul Schrader groused about “the scramble to be woke” and a loss of the ceremony’s “provincial” origins — but that’s selective memory: Hollywood is the invention of immigrants.
“Everything Everywhere All at Once” made the most noise, but one of the biggest historical achievements was played off the stage. In the acceptance speech for documentary short film “The Elephant Whisperers,” producer Guneet Monga yelled into the microphone that her movie was the first Indian production to win an Oscar. The front row, filled with A-listers, heard her and cheered; everyone at home heard a blaring orchestra.

The Oscar-winning short documentary ‘The Elephant Whisperers’ was shot in the Theppakadu Elephant Camp at the Mudumalai Tiger Reserve in the Nilgiri Mountains in Tamil Nadu. The Theppakadu Elephant Camp in Mudumalai Tiger Reserve is the oldest elephant camp in Asia and was established 105 years back.

The director of the movie, Kartiki Gonsalves had stayed in the Mudumalai Tiger Reserve for five long years to shoot the documentary and it has paid off taking her to an Oscar victory.
The movie, which is of 41 minutes duration, explores the tentative and precious bond between an orphaned elephant Raghu and his caretakers, a mahout couple, Bomman and Bellie.

After ‘The Elephant Whisperers’ got Oscar at Academy Awards, former environment minister Jairam Ramesh hoped that it may force the government to rethink about amending wild life Act.
“It is wonderful that The Elephant Whisperers has won an Oscar. Maybe this will force the Modi govt not to press ahead with the widely opposed elephant-unfriendly amendments to the Wild Life Protection Act, 1972. In 2010, the elephant had been declared the national heritage animal.” he said.
The documentary ‘The Elephant Whisperers’ has brought home an Oscar in the Best Documentary Short Film category at the 95th Oscar Awards.
The award was presented by ‘The Last Of Us’ actor Pedro Pascal. ‘The Elephant Whisperers’ was competing in the category alongside ‘Haulout’, ‘How Do You Measure a Year?’, ‘The Martha Mitchell Effect’ and ‘Stranger at the Gate’.

In a scene from the Oscar-winning best short documentary The Elephant Whisperers, Bellie instructs a young elephant calf to lie down in front of her. “I’ll beat you if you lie down on me,” she says. As if telepathically connected, Raghu responds by gently folding into a heap and quietly placing his head in her lap. It is a miraculous moment that illustrates an astonishingly deep and unlikely maternal bond between a young elephant and his human caregiver. The 2023 Oscars returned to the Dolby Theatre on Sunday for Hollywood’s biggest night of the year. The Oscars telecast may have featured Everything Everywhere All at Once taking home the top prize, as well as six other awards, but the cameras didn’t catch everything. From Ke Huy Quan’s emotional reunions to Lady Gaga’s heart of gold, here are some of the things the cameras missed during the 95th annual awards show.

Indian film Rrr’s hit song “Naatu Naatu” has won an Oscar for Best Original Song.

Because of the unimaginable-a-year-ago dominance of Everything Everywhere All at Once and the perception bias in which deviations from the norm appear more outsized than they actually are, the 2023 Oscars might be remembered as the most Asian Academy Awards yet.
Winners of Asian descent — namely, of Chinese and Indian ethnicity — took home statuettes in eight categories, the most ever in a single year (Asian winners showed up in five races in 2009 and 2020, aka the Slumdog Millionaire and Parasite years, respectively, and in four in 2001 and 2021, aka the Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon and Nomadland/Minari years).
Daniel Kwan, whose parents hail from Hong Kong and Taiwan, was responsible for three category wins: original screenplay, directing (both shared with Daniel Scheinert) and best picture, which the Daniels shared with producer Jonathan Wang, whose late father was Taiwanese. Kwan and Wang are the first U.S.-born Asians to win their Oscar categories.

As expected, Daniels Kwan and Scheinert’s Everything Everywhere All At Once has come out on top at 2023’s Oscars ceremony, with the most wins of anything nominated.

A celebration of the achievements of South Asian women was held Saturday in downtown Los Angeles, galvanizing a community to move forward in entertainment and create “space for mainstream wins.”
Sponsored by the Product of Culture and South Asian Women in Entertainment, the luncheon aimed to raise awareness and provide networking opportunities. The South Asian community has particular struggles, including defying religious and societal norms and traditions, transphobia, and sometimes government interference in their native countries.
South Asian women comprise only 0.3% of screen time for television and film, according to event organizers.
“It’s important to build these spaces and celebrate the wins of the largest global diaspora,” said Archana Misra Jain, CEO, Product of Culture.. “What we’re cultivating today is influencing pop culture, empowering a critical mass, and creating the space for mainstream wins. Product of Culture’s cornerstone is to merge content, commerce and culture, while representing...

The best places to check out for which way the mood is swinging at the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, or just the Academy, this Oscars season, are the two Los Angeles natives – ‘Variety’, which has been reporting on Hollywood even before the Oscars were invented, and the ‘Los Angeles Times’ (Lat).
And both have given their votes in favour of “Naatu Naatu”, the M M Keeravani-composed hit number from “Rrr”, for Best Original Song and Guneet Monga and Kartiki Gonsalves’s Netflix production, “The Elephant Whisperers”, for the Best Documentary Short.
Whereas Lat is categorical in its thumbs up for “Naatu Naatu”, ‘Variety’ hedges its bet. “The divas don’t have much of a chance against ‘Rrr’ and its joyous dance,” Lat proclaims.
‘Variety’, however, points to an imponderable: the effect of Rihanna’s spellbinding performance at Super Bowl Lvii at State Farm Stadium in Glendale,...

The Indian content is steadily making waves in the international arena and producer Guneet Monga feels that the streaming services have played a key role in taking Indian content to the remotest places on earth. What works particularly in the case of the aforementioned films is their rootedness and the honesty with which the stories are told.
Monga told Ians: "Our storytelling is rooted here and it’s high time we are recognised across the globe. After all, we are the most prolific film industry in the world. ‘Rrr’ is so Indian and that’s the reason it went global because it was rooted."
"For a film or a series to work and to transcend the physical boundaries, it is important that it is rooted and honest in its approach, all the three films ‘The Elephant Whisperers’, ‘Rrr’ and ‘All That Breathes’ have these ingredients," she added.

How long does a documentary need to be? Frederick Wiseman frequently goes long, and Oscar-winning “Oj: Made in America” ran nearly eight hours. Lately, with “Bill Russell: Legend” and “Boom! Boom! The World vs. Boris Becker,” streamers have embraced the “two-part documentary” — a fancy term for what used to be called a miniseries. So, while there are no limits on how much longer docs can get, it’s refreshing to see a compelling subject covered in 40 minutes or less, and doubly rewarding to realize that four of the five packaged in ShortsTV’s “2023 Oscar Nominated Short Films: Documentary” found audiences on their own merits, even without theatrical distribution.
