For Jenny Slate, there’s much to love about working as a stand-up comic today.
“We have the opportunity to be really thoughtful about saying something deeply important about our own personal development, about the world at large, about current events, about censorship in art, about what is the current vernacular in art,” the comedian says.
Certainly, she acknowledges, “cancel culture is frightening,” and it’s always “scary to be a person with a microphone, [but] it’s also a great privilege. If you’re a performer and you feel that you’re talented, if you pair that talent with thoughtfulness, I think [it’s a] great opportunity to feel fully expressed.”
On Monday night, Slate was at Deadline’s Studio at the Prime Experience to promote her latest special Seasoned Professional, which debuted on Prime Video on February 23. Also appearing for solo interviews were comedians Tig Notaro and Jim Gaffigan, who while discussing...

James Gunn's sci-fi adventure film "Guardians of the Galaxy, Vol. 3" takes place on a free-floating space station that was once the head of an ineffable space deity. On board the head, called Knowhere, a wide variety of aliens and creatures live in a cramped complex of apartments, trying to reside as comfortably as possible. Knowhere is also the home to the Guardians of the Galaxy, a loosely associated group of aliens — and one human — who occasionally commit acts of heroism for hire. In the first "Guardians" film, they came into the possession of Cosmo, a Soviet space dog that was salvaged by an unusual being called the Collector. By the third "Guardians," Cosmo could speak through a psychic collar (Cosmo was voiced by Maria Bakalova) and float objects with her mind.
Cosmo's breed is never spoken aloud, but she looks like a labrador or a golden retriever. In other words,...

Jenny Slate is pretty memorable as an entitled dry-cleaning client twirling a chihuahua around her head in Everything Everywhere All at Once, but it’s her role as an animated shell with one googly eye that really captured attention this season. In Marcel the Shell with Shoes On, we’re given a full-length feature version of the character Slate co-created with director Dean Fleischer Camp back in 2010. Voicing Marcel and leaning into her improv skills to help cook up the comedy character’s quirky and poignant dialogue, Slate explains why she thinks Marcel’s miniature perspective has inspired so many, and why this gig suits her so much better than SNL ever did.
Deadline: Years ago, you came up with the voice of Marcel when you and Dean and some friends were squashed into a hotel room at a wedding. What part of you was speaking through Marcel back then?...
