One week after Jo Koy received an “F” grade for hosting the Golden Globes, all eyes were on Anthony Anderson as he stepped foot on the Emmys stage for the first time as an emcee. The comedian and actor kept audiences entertained for three hours on Fox with his constant musical performances, including “The Facts of Life,” “Good Times” and “Miami Vice.” Meanwhile, his loving Mama, Doris Hancox, interrupted winners on the big stage if their speeches went on too long.
In all, the majority of Emmy viewers gave Anderson a passing grade for his inaugural hosting abilities, according to Gold Derby’s overnight poll. Here are the complete poll results:
B — I rather liked him — 37%
A — Brilliant from start to finish! — 28%
F — Awful, awful, awful — 19%
C — He was just okay — 9%
D — Somewhat forgettable — 7%

The 75th Primetime Emmy Awards were destined to feel out of step. The four-month delay to accommodate the writers’ and actors’ strikes put Monday night’s ceremony right in the middle of the winter awards race, which would always pose a problem — between our nightly dose of NFL games and awards shows crowding every weekend, there are simply too many live events in January — but the move felt especially discombobulating in 2024. These Emmy nominees weren’t just a year old; they dated back to June 2022. That means recent contenders we just saw at the Golden Globes or among the SAG nominations — like Emma Stone in “The Curse” and Jon Hamm for “Fargo” — weren’t eligible.
Hamm, bless his soul, still showed up as a presenter, but he wasn’t even introduced as the current star of an FX anthology series, nor as the upcoming voice actor and executive producer of Fox’s own “Grimsburg.

Host Anthony Anderson kicked off the 75th Primetime Emmy Awards on Jan. 15 — with the comedic support of his mom, Doris Hancox — crowning the best TV of the 2022–2023 season. Netflix earned nominations across 34 titles, and won a total of 22 awards, including big sweeps for Queer Eye and Beef. In fact, the Fab 5 hold the record for the most Outstanding Structured Program Emmys with their sixth consecutive win. After winning three Golden Globes, Beef continued to sweep the awards circuit, nabbing awards for eight of its 13 Emmy nominations. And it was another big night for Ali Wong, who became the first woman of Asian descent to win an Emmy in a lead actress race.
While many great acceptance speeches kept the night lively, Niecy Nash-Betts, who won best supporting actress in the limited series category for her portrayal of Glenda Cleveland in Dahmer, acknowledged...

Anthony Anderson’s mom?
The postponed Emmys had far more great moments than bad, thank goodness — starting with the brisk, git’ ‘er done pace, which seemed particularly on brand for the scrappier-than-ever Fox. And though the night was packed with far too many anti-climactic moments (as if any show other than Succession would rack up all the trophies), the meet-cutes on stage made for fun TV and the sentimental interpretation of the title song from Friends during the In Memoriam segment was both appropriate and absolutely heartbreaking.
Best Moments
Anthony Anderson’s opening monologue, which began with him walking into his own “Mister Anderson’s Neighborhood.” After throwing off his fur coat, he then sat down at a piano and, joined by a chorus from Compton, sang a medley of title songs like “Good...

Last Week Tonight with John Oliver beat Saturday Night Live and A Black Lady Sketch Show to win the first ever Emmy for Outstanding Scripted Variety Series.
John Oliver’s HBO show continued its Emmy win streak, winning its eighth straight Emmy, having won seven years in a row in the Outstanding Variety Talk Series category.
The TV Academy shook up the categories last year, launching Outstanding Scripted Variety Series, alongside Outstanding Talk Series and moved Oliver into the former, going head to head with SNL, which had won the award for Outstanding Variety Sketch Series six years in a row starting in 2017.
Oliver, who was handed the award by Stephen Colbert, his Strike Force 5 co-host, and After Midnight host Taylor Tomlinson, started by thanking his staff, although pointed out that some of them were still in New York “burning down a bar there”.
“Thank you to HBO, Casey, Nina...

Emmys viewers got a nostalgic walk through Anthony Anderson’s childhood viewing habits as he took the stage to open Monday’s Emmys ceremony.
The Emmys emcee entered the broadcast after a title card informed us we were watching Mister Anderson’s Neighborhood. He took off a fur coat, trading it for his tuxedo jacket as he sat down at a piano on a set reminiscent of Mister Rogers’ Neighborhood and walked the audience through his formative TV viewing habits.
