"Straight Outta Compton" scribe Alan Wenkus is on board to pen an adaptation of the Iraqi War drama "Code Name: Johnny Walker" at 28 Entertainment which acquired the rights last year.
Jim DeFelice ("American Sniper") co-wrote the book with the Navy Seal translator and Iraqi citizen who goes under the pseudonym 'Johnny Walker'.
The translator was welcomed by the SEALs into their tight-knit ranks during the American invasion and the insurgency that followed. He ultimately took part in more than 1,000 missions over a six-year period.
When insurgents targeted Johnny and his family for torture and death, the SEALs heroically brought Johnny and his family to safety in the United States.
Jay Hoffman, Brian A. Hoffman and Brett Harrison will produce.

28 Entertainment announced today the acquisition of the story rights to George Jones and his wife Nancy for a feature film project about the incredible life and career of the iconic country singer. The project, written by Dennis L. Baxter and produced by Baxter and 28 Entertainment’s Jay Hoffman and Brian A. Hoffman, depicts George’s life as a country music legend while battling his personal demons.
“Over the years we have been approached to make George’s life into a feature film, but it was not until Dennis Baxter became involved that we were confident the story could be told accurately. George and I started working with Dennis six years ago in crafting the life-long story. Knowing George had input in this film and that it will be told the way he wanted it told, I feel we are in good hands to collaborate with 28 Entertainment as we move forward with production,...

Although out-of-town Austin Film Festival attendees may have had a difficult time attending movie premieres and screenings at the Regal Arbor in north Austin, this local doesn't mind the change of pace. With changes in the parking fees downtown and traffic congestion, I enjoy the alternate venues -- especially since the Arbor is close to home for me.
One of the Aff selections I saw at the Arbor this year was Deep in the Heart, a feature making its world premiere in the fest's Texas Independents category. Starring local festival alum Jon Gries (Natural Selection, Napoleon Dynamite) as Texan Dick Wallrath, this docudrama focuses on a man who went from a deadbeat alcoholic to a self-made millionaire and philanthropist. Wallrath is known for his generosity via the Future Farmers of America (Ffa) and 4-h programs that helps fund college educations for students from rural communities. The movie was shot in the greater Austin area.
