The number of actors the Netflix TV series Cobra Kai has brought back to reprise their characters from the Karate Kid films has been very impressive. Not only do you have Ralph Macchio and William Zabka back as Daniel Larusso and Johnny Lawrence, but there’s also Martin Kove and Thomas Ian Griffith as villains John Kreese and Terry Silver, Yuji Okumoto and Sean Kanan as villains-turned-allies Chozen Toguchi and Mike Barnes; Ron Thomas, Rob Garrison, and Tony O’Dell as Johnny’s former Cobra Kai buddies; and appearances by Elisabeth Shue as Ali Mills, Tamlyn Tomita as Kumiko, and Robyn Lively as Jessica Andrews. They even brought Traci Toguchi back as Yuna, the “Girl Bell Ringer” she played in The Karate Kid Part II. But one actor who might not be returning from the films is Hilary Swank, who played Julie Pierce in the 1994 film The Next Karate Kid.

Up until now, the Karate Kid franchise has lived on solely through the "Cobra Kai" TV series, but in 2024, it's set to return to the big screen with a brand-new movie. The untitled project will mark the sixth installment in the franchise and will release exactly 40 years after the first Karate Kid film premiered in 1984. The original movie starred Ralph Macchio as a teenager named Daniel Larusso, who learns karate from martial arts master Mr. Miyagi (Pat Morita) in order to defend himself against a group of bullies, one of whom includes Johnny Lawrence (William Zabka). Since their rivalry is also at the center of "Cobra Kai," we're left to wonder whether the new film will bring the iconic pair back once more.
In September 2022, Macchio told Entertainment Weekly that he wasn't attached to the project, however, since the movie was still in its early stages, anything could happen. "I...

"Cobra Kai" shocked everyone with its unbelievable return to "The Karate Kid" universe. The show, which was created by Josh Heald, Jon Hurwitz, and Hayden Schlossberg, is essentially one giant love letter to the original films. Not only is it smart, original, and funny, but it's also done an incredible job of tying in many of the characters from the first three films. (This particular writer is also desperate to see Hilary Swank reprise her role as Julie Pierce from "The Next Karate Kid.") Season 2 saw the epic and heartfelt return of Johnny Lawrence's (William Zabka) original Cobra Kai pals, Tommy (Rob Garrison), Bobby (Ron Thomas), and Jimmy (Tony O'Dell). Elisabeth Shue reprised her role as Ali Mills, and both Martin Cove and Thomas Ian Griffith have returned to the franchise as the show's formidable villains, John Kreese and Terry Silver, respectively.

This Cobra Kai article contains spoilers for season 5.
Daniel Larusso (Ralph Macchio), Johnny Lawrence (William Zabka), and Sensei Kreese (Martin Kove) aren’t the only carry overs from the original three Karate Kid films. Far from it, Cobra Kai has been masterfully tapping its source by bringing back cast members from the movies, regularly serving the fans up with colorful Easter eggs.
Some of the original characters, like Lucille Larusso (Randee Heller), Daniel’s mom, have appeared throughout Cobra Kai. She has been seen in seasons 1, 2, and 4, which is more than she was seen in the latter two Karate Kid films. The original Cobra Kai gang from The Karate Kid Part I, Bobby (Ron Thomas), Jimmy (Tony O’Dell), and Tommy (Rob Garrison) were reunited with Johnny in season 2 in one of the most poignant episodes of the entire show – the death of Tommy. It’s an emotional irony when the...

Daniel Larusso is no stranger to romance. In "The Karate Kid," his crush on Johnny Lawrence's (William Zabka) girlfriend Ali Mills (Elizabeth Shue) is what gets him into trouble in the first place. Determined to win her heart and give Johnny a beating in the process (Johnny sympathizer over here!), Daniel sets out to master the art of karate, which is a pretty crazy and impressive thing to do for love. Because this is Hollywood, he ends up getting the girl and the first place trophy, but by "The Karate Kid Part II," he and Ali have parted ways.
Clearly not too heartbroken over the breakup, Daniel embarks on a journey to Okinawa with Mr. Miyagi (Pat Morita) where he meets Yukie, Miyagi's former crush, and her charming niece Kumiko (Tamlyn Tomita). He then spends the rest of the film trying to win over Kumiko's heart with his sick karate moves and American charm.

Pulling off a successful film to television adaptation is a tricky business. While TV series like “Buffy the Vampire Slayer” and “M*A*S*H*” are stellar examples of TV adaptations that expanded and even elevated their film origins, there have also been forgettable failures like “Dirty Dancing” (1998) and “Ferris Bueller” (1990). In the case of “Cobra Kai,” which returns for its fourth season on Netflix, we’re treated to a series that faithfully honors its roots while managing to tell new and compelling stories through its two main protagonists, Johnny Lawrence (William Zabka) and Daniel “Danny” Larusso (Ralph Macchio).
“Cobra Kai” is an extension of the 1984 film, “The Karate Kid,” which tells the story of Danny Larusso, a shy teenager who relocates from New Jersey to Los Angeles, and soon becomes the target of rich golden boy Johnny Lawrence, when they both vie for the affection of Ali Mills (Elisabeth Shue...

In the world of Cobra Kai, some rivalries turn into unlikely alliances, while other beefs may remain combative forever. But despite Daniel and Johnny’s seemingly squashed drama, that in no way, shape or form means things are going to be easy for the dojos.

Martial arts dramedy Cobra Kai has continued the story of the Karate Kid films, reigniting the rivalry between former opponents Daniel Larusso (Ralph Macchio) and Johnny Lawrence (William Zabka), now middle-aged, as they mentor a new generation of karate kids. And as the series progressed — and switched streamers from YouTube Premium to Netflix — producers added in more characters from the films. John Kreese (Martin Kove) returned in Season 1, and Ali Mills (Elisabeth Shue) and Chozen Toguchi (Yuji Okumoto) came back in Season 3. The upcoming fourth season, hitting Netflix on December 31, will see the return of Terry Silver (Thomas Ian Griffith). “In our writers’ room, we speak about literally every character that has appeared in the Miyagi-verse,” Cobra Kai co-creator Jon Hurwitz told CinemaBlend last year. Two characters excluded from that Miyagi-verse? Dre Parker and Mr. Han, the characters Jaden Smith and Jackie Chan played in the 2010 Karate Kid remake. “Jackie...

Cobra Kai, the Karate Kid sequel series that was born as a YouTube Original and currently lives on Netflix, is teasing its fourth season, which is set to premiere in December.

The following contains spoilers for Cobra Kai season 3.
When Tory Nichols (Peyton List) first appeared in Cobra Kai, she was the best red herring ever. She introduced herself in season 2 episode 4 “The Moment of Truth” as “Tory… with a ‘Y’” and every fan of the original film went ballistic. In The Karate Kid, Ali Mills (Elisabeth Shue) introduced herself to Daniel Larusso (Ralph Macchio) as “Ali… with an ‘I’” so we all wondered if Tory might be Ali’s daughter.
Then season 3 leads us on even more. In the second episode of this season, “Nature vs Nurture,” there’s a scene set in Tory’s apartment. She is caring for her invalid mother, but her mom is off screen. We don’t see her. Why would they hide her if she wasn’t Ali?
Well, it wasn’t Ali. But Ali makes a glorious return all the same in episodes...

Cobra Kai Season 4 has been officially ordered by Netflix! However, before we get ahead of ourselves on that front, there’s more immediate news to cover here, namely the just-dropped release date for Season 3.
Netflix has revealed that Cobra Kai Season 3 will premiere on the platform on January 8, 2021. That key disclosure settles over a year’s worth of speculation regarding the arrival of the show’s surreptitiously-completed third season, which was initially produced for its previous home, YouTube Premium, before an acquisition by Netflix gave the series an exponentially bigger streaming platform. Indeed, Cobra Kai is proving to be a small-pond-born big fish that managed to thrive in the vastness of its new Netflix ocean, with the August arrival of the show’s two existing seasons having recently topped Nielsen’s streaming top 10 with 2.17 billion minutes viewed after generating tremendous acclaim.

Cobra Kai is heading for a new proving ground tournament of a streaming platform: Netflix!
The streaming giant has officially announced the addition of Cobra Kai to its vast streaming lineup, bringing the buzz-heavy hit series to a platform that’s exponentially larger than the show has ever known, prospectively providing the kind of mainstream exposure of which it had been deprived on its previous home of YouTube Premium. Promisingly, the deal, made with production company Sony Pictures Television, sets the premiere of Cobra Kai Season 3 on Netflix for an undisclosed date after the arrival of the show’s first two seasons, which will occur sometime this year.
As executive producers Josh Heald, Jon Hurwitz, and Hayden Schlossberg laud of the Netflix migration:
“Making Cobra Kai has been a dream come true for us since day one. We are thankful for the tireless dedication of Jeff Frost, Chris Parnell, Jason Clodfelter,...

Cobra Kai is targeting a new home for its third season.
The TV sequel to The Karate Kid has called Youtube its home for the past two seasons and has racked up substantial viewership on the platform.
On the heel of the series reaching a record for its Season 2 premiere, it was swiftly renewed for a third season.
Youtube has been vocal to producer Sony Pictures Television about not ordering another season beyond the third and has given the company permission to shop the show to other outlets.
Deadline is reporting that Netflix and Hulu are the most likely to pick up the series, and it makes a lot of sense.
The franchise is well-known, and we are living in unprecedented times, in which original, scripted content could run out because of the Covid-19 induced shutdown.
The new home would not have to spend a lot to market the project...

Ralph Macchio recently talked candidly to popculture about the success that the stars and creators have been experiencing with YouTube Premium’s breakout hit series Cobra Kai. They asked about the possibility of seeing the character Ali Mills return to the franchise.
Ali was the girl, played charmingly by Elisabeth Shue, who originally began the rivalry between Daniel and Johnny in the 1984 Karate Kid film. Here’s what Macchio had to say about it:
“No one will confirm or deny that, but they certainly approached [her] and have questioned it. We know that she really enjoyed the show and sees the quality of the show. So yeah, I think the door is open for something there.”
Her character has already been referenced in the series when in season one, Daniel and Johnny were talking over drinks in a bar, and they looked Ali up on Facebook to see what she was up to.

Here’s a real kick in the head: It’s been 35 years since Columbia Studios released The Karate Kid. Fathom Events is marking the anniversary by bringing the 1984 classic back to the big screen Sunday and this Tuesday at more than 600 theaters nationwide. The special screenings are more than memory-lane matinees, they will be accompanied by a Season 2 preview of Cobra Kai, the acclaimed YouTube hit series (50 million views) that rekindles the Reagan Era rivalry between Daniel Larusso (Ralph Macchio) and Johnny Lawrence (William Zabka) and pulls a second generation into the All Valley Championships grudge match.
The Cobra Kai success has been a pleasant surprise for Macchio, now 57, but then again role of Daniel Larusso has never really faded from his day-to-day life. Asked, for instance, how often fans approach him and reenact Larusso’s fighting stance — the loose-limbed, one-legged “crane kick” pose — Macchio estimated that it might be...

A new trailer for the upcoming second season of Cobra Kai – which hits YouTube Red on April 24th – has just been released. It shows Daniel Larusso’s feud with childhood enemy Johnny Lawrence reaching a new level of intensity when he creates his own dojo to take on Cobra Kai. “Inner-peace, focus, balance – you can learn the secrets of Okinawan Karate, true karate, by joining Miyago Do team,” Larusso says in a promotional video shown in the trailer. “Because at Miyagi Do, it’s not about the money. It’s about the karate.

Back in 1984 it would’ve been hard to predict that The Karate Kid would still be a huge cult film some 30 years later. It appealed both to every kid who ever felt the underdog and the late 70s / early 80s fascination with martial arts… And those kids, now grown up, can relive their childhood fascination with Daniel-San and co. with a new range of Funko ReAction figures – appealing to both film fans and retro toy collectors.
The range includes Daniel Larusso, Karate Daniel Larusso, Ali Mills, Mr. Miyagi, Kreese and Johnny. Check them out below:...

Given that Himym likes to reference Star Wars, Ferris Bueller’s Day Off and The Karate Kid, your choices are Princess Laia, Sloan Peterson and Ali Mills.
I guess I gotta marry the girl from Karate Kid (Mills), bang Sloan Peterson and kill Princess Laia. Never was a big Princess Laia fan.
I never was a big fan of the Return of the Jedi bikini fantasy, either. So, where are you from?
Born in Fair Lawn NJ, we moved to the suburbs of Atlanta when I was seven and I was there until college when I moved around a number of places before I ended up in Los Angeles. It was there I started doing improv,...

Director John G. Avildsen's The Karate Kid (1984), like The Goonies (1985), was one of those movies that was released around the time of my childhood that I never ended up seeing. Growing up, I was drawn to Pee-Wee's Big Adventure (1985), Back to the Future (1985), Spaceballs (1987), Who Framed Roger Rabbit (1988), and Mac & Me (1988). The earliest I can recall hearing anything about The Karate Kid was roughly ten years after it came out. I had just gotten into one of my first fights and I had the coordination of bull in a china shop. My father suggested I take up karate, which he had at one time practiced, and my parents tried to track down a VHS copy of the film to inspire me in between punching bag sessions. Well, it turns out the library (or perhaps the local video store) was out of stock that week and shortly thereafter my interest...

When I think of Elisabeth Shue, the word .scary. doesn.t necessarily come to mind. It.s easier to picture her as sweet Ali Mills in Karate Kidor Chris Parker in Adventures in Babysitting. But that is changing (those days are long behind her) as she.s getting into the thriller genre. The Hollywood Reporter has it Shue will join the cast of House at the End of the Street alongside Jennifer Lawrence (Winter.s Bone) and Max Thieriot (Chloe). Mark Tonderai (Hush) will direct the thriller. In the upcoming production, Lawrence will move in with her mother, played by Shue. They live across the street from the location of a double murder. Theiriot will play the only survivor of the violence. He befriend.s Lawrence.s character, and presumably all scariness breaks loose. In the horror vein, Shue can be seen in the ensemble cast of Piranha 3D, due...

In what might be the biggest “Well, duh” of the week, as Hollywood Insider’s Nicole Sperling reports, Columbia Pictures is planning a sequel to The Kung Fu Karate Kid, seeing as the Will and Jada Smith-produced, Jaden Smith-starring remake to the 1984 original kicked such serious butt at the box office last weekend. They don’t have a script or story yet, but that’s where I come in. I’ve got the plot all worked out.
Since the current movie takes place in China (therefore borrowing the whole underdog-fish-out-of-water story line from the original Karate Kid II), the sequel should find Dre,...

What a confused beast the remake of The Karate Kid looks to be. On the one hand, its producers are clearly keen on channelling the 1984 original's enduring cool by clinging on to that iconic title. On the other, they've decided to set the thing in China, perhaps because this allows them to shoot scenes on the Great Wall and harness the box office potential of a nation of over a billion people.
Yet karate is a Japanese martial art, originally emerging on the Ryukyu Islands, not a Chinese one. The new movie, which stars Jaden Smith in the bullied kid role made famous by Ralph Macchio and Jackie Chan as the mentor who teaches him to fight, rightly ought to have been called the Kung Fu Kid. In fact, the last time I heard, it was.

After complaining about the lack of action in the first official photo from The Karate Kid remake, three new photos have surfaced and, sure enough, they are far more exciting. The first features Jaden Smith showing off a painful looking high kick. The second is Smith.s Dre with Jackie Chan.s Mr. Han atop the Great Wall of China. Clearly a major benefit of taking the film from California to China is some beautiful scenic shots. Lastly, we get a peak at the young girl who steals Dre.s heart. Smith is only 11, but the movie needs a new Ali Mills (Elisabeth Shue), the lady that catches Daniel Larusso.s eye in the 1984 original! Now, all we.re missing is a look at the new Cobra Kai, the students of Li Quan Ha.s Fighting dragon school of Kung-Fu.
