Judas Priest continue to unveil tracks from their forthcoming album Invincible Shield ahead of its March 8th release date.
“The Serpent and the King” is the fourth single from the LP so far, and it’s another scalding ripper from the British metal legends.
Rob Halford’s falsetto vocals are front and center — yep, he can still hit that vaunted Painkiller register — and the guitar tone sounds like it’s scratching the speakers from the inside. Under the hood, the guitar work and riff arrangements are densely composed — enough for both thrash and prog heads to feast on.
Regarding the album’s musical direction, guitarist Richie Faulkner told Audio Ink Radio that Invincible Shield “is progressive in the sense that it’s not like verse-chorus-verse-chorus-solo-chorus-finish,” likening it to Priest’s ’70s output.
“It’s musical part-verse-musical part,” he added. “It might do a few twists and turns, musically. It veers from the path of it,...

They say the truth is stranger than fiction, but in the real world of Griselda Blanco, the truth is more brutal.
Inspired by the true story of Colombian drug trafficker Griselda Blanco and starring Sofía Vergara (who also serves as executive producer) as the ambitious and murderous Miami cartel head, Griselda tracks the dramatized life, business acumen, and downfall of “the Godmother,” one of America’s highest earning drug traffickers in the ’70s and ’80s… and one of the most deadly.
She went by many nicknames: “La Madrina,” “The Black Widow,” “La Dama de la Mafia.” But for her foes, the name Griselda became synonymous with death.
With six hour-long episodes, Griselda was created by Eric Newman (Painkiller) and Andrés Baiz — who directs every episode — reuniting the team behind Narcos and Narcos: Mexico. Newman, Doug Miro, Ingrid Escajeda, and Carlo Bernard serve as co-creators and executive produced the series...

You’ve never seen Sofía Vergara like this. In the new drama series Griselda, the veteran comedian (Modern Family) is La Jefa (“The Boss”) through and through. Vergara stars as the eponymous Griselda Blanco and also serves as an executive producer on the project, streaming now.
With six hour-long episodes, Griselda was created by Eric Newman (Painkiller) and Andrés Baiz — who directs every episode — reuniting the team behind Narcos and Narcos: Mexico. Newman, Doug Miro, Ingrid Escajeda, and Carlo Bernard serve as co-creators and executive produced the series alongside Baiz, Vergara, and Luis Balaguer with Latin World Entertainment. Escajeda and Miro are the series’ co-showrunners.
“From the earliest days of my research for what became Narcos, [Griselda] leapt out at me as a fascinating character,” Newman tells Tudum. “I have always endeavored to humanize complicated people, many of whom have been considered evil, and Griselda offered both the greatest...

The 2024 SAG Awards nominations were announced on Wednesday, January 10. The 29th annual SAG Awards, honoring the best movie and TV performances for the year 2023, will be handed out during a ceremony in Los Angeles on Sunday, February 24.
Last year, the guild previewed only 12 of the 20 nominees for acting at the Oscars. That was way off its usual rate of success. In 2021, it went 16 for 20. That was up from the 14 of 20 it matched in 2020. In both 2018 and 2019, SAG hit 75% (15 of 20). And in both 2015 and 2017, it did even better going 17 for 20. However, in 2016 SAG previewed only a lucky 13 Academy Awards contenders.
The SAG Awards roster was decided by a randomly selected nominations panel comprising 2,500 members of the merged Screen Actors Guild and American Federation of Television and Radio Artists unions. The winners will be decided by all 121,000 members of SAG-AFTRA.

Angela Bassett (Black Panther: Wakanda Forever), Dan Stevens (Legion), Matthew Modine (Stranger Things), Bill Camp (The Queen’s Gambit) and McKinley Belcher III (Ozark) are among the new cast revealed for Netflix’s Zero Day. The limited series will also feature Gaby Hoffman (Transparent), Clark Gregg (Painkiller) and Mark Ivanir (Away) in guest-starring roles.
Zero Day is in production in New York with Robert De Niro starring and executive producing.
Zero Day asks the question: How do we find truth in a world in crisis, one seemingly being torn apart by forces outside our control? And in an era rife with conspiracy theory and subterfuge, how much of those forces are products of our own doing, perhaps even of our own imagining?
At the center of the narrative is De Niro’s Mullen, a popular but complicated figure who is yanked back from retirement to head up a commission investigating a global cyberattack.

It feels like every year, we spend half of the summer wondering if there's still such a thing as a "song of the summer" or if pop culture is too fragmented for us to have one inescapable track, then we spend the rest of the summer wondering what it is. Instead of that exercise in futility, we’ve narrowed down the songs of the summer as presented by summer TV. These songs were deployed memorably, adding emotion, sensuality, or humor to the scenes they augmented. Heartstopper went wall-to-wall with TikTok-worthy Gen Z anthems (then added a little touch of The Cure for the olds to enjoy), while Painkiller had Big Pharma's worst people dancing to "The Macarena."...

When Barry Meier first published what would become his explosive book Pain Killer back in 2003, which investigated the billionaire scions behind Purdue Pharma and the drug OxyContin, it was optioned by production firm Anonymous Content. But, the author says, Hollywood wasn’t actually ready to tell the story. “They had a very hard time selling a script at that point, because Purdue had not been indicted yet by the Justice Department,” Meier tells The Hollywood Reporter. “So people in Hollywood were going, ‘Are these good guys; are they bad guys? How do we cast this?’ Well, by 2007, it was pretty clear that this company had pled guilty to a federal crime, and that OxyContin had planted the seed and was the gateway drug to this horrible opioid epidemic that was still unfolding.”

This article contains spoilers for Painkiller.
The ending of Netflix‘s Painkiller puts a lot of energy into properly punishing its antagonist Richard Sackler (Matthew Broderick).
The series, which Netflix is careful to note is a fictionalized retelling of true events, concludes with Richard being beaten to a bloody pulp by the ghostly apparition of his legacy-obsessed uncle Arthur Sackler (Clark Gregg). Richard is merely trying to explain to his uncle that the Sackler family and their Purdue Pharma company has cut a pretty good deal with the government to avoid criminal punishment for their role in developing the drug OxyContin and perpetuating the opioid crisis. But Arthur is just not having it.
In-between violent punches to Richard’s face, Arthur decries his nephew’s decision to give even an inch to prosecutors, screaming, “You were weak. You conceded. I don’t care about immunity. You tore down the name that I built.

On Thursday, August 10, the Supreme Court blocked Purdue Pharma’s bankruptcy deal that would settle the scores of civil lawsuits against the pharmaceutical company, which has been evading legal persecution for its alleged role in the U.S. opioid crisis for decades. Painkiller, a six-part scripted limited series tracking the origins of the crisis and that evasion, premiered on Netflix the same day. TV Insider spoke with director and executive producer Pete Berg (Friday Night Lights) on August 11 to discuss the series. Given the coincidental synchronicity of the Scotus decision and Painkiller‘s release date, we asked Berg for this thoughts on the matter. “I think it’s exactly what should have happened,” Berg tells us. “The Sacklers have been really, really effective at using...

Cults come in many shapes, sizes and forms, not all of them involving a charismatic figurehead, secluded hideaway, or cache of weapons. Sometimes, as in Netflix’s lively new Sackler family takedown Painkiller, the angels of death are short-skirted sales reps, heroin Barbies who scream their heads off at sales “conferences” and seduce doctors with gifts, hefty speaker fees, and, sometimes, sex. They’re paid handsomely, plied with Porsches and luxury apartments, all for spreading the lethal lies that Oxycontin isn’t terribly addictive and doctors are professionally if not...

Adam McKay’s name is nowhere to be found in the credits for Painkiller, for the very good reason that he had nothing to do with it.
Yet it’s hard not to see his influence all over the Netflix miniseries. It’s there in the restless pacing, in the heavy-handed metaphors, in the choice to have the entire thing narrated by a character who all but reaches out from the screen to grab the audience by the lapels and shake them into action.
And it’s there, too, in the accompanying limitations. Painkiller, created by Micah Fitzerman-Blue and Noah Harper, presumably intends for all that flash to draw attention to its weighty central narrative about the launch of OxyContin and the ensuing opioid epidemic. But it overshoots that mark. The style is so ostentatious it distracts from the substance, even as it means to hammer home how important that substance really is.

In the second episode of Netflix’s Painkiller, two sales representatives (West Duchovny and Dina Shihabi) call in on various doctors’ offices to push a pill that promises to reduce pain and enhance quality of life. Like all good sales reps, they come bearing gifts, among them a cute stuffed toy in the shape of a pill, a recurring motif throughout the series meant to represent danger disguised as something innocuous. The drug in question is OxyContin, and the sales reps work for Purdue Pharma, the company that, under the ownership of the now infamous Sackler family, marketed the opioid to millions of Americans to devastating results.
The plot unfolds as Edie Flowers (Uzo Aduba), a jaded state investigator, recounts her findings to the lawyers trying to build a case against the Sacklers. The series attempts to address every possible angle of the scandal, from the company that created the drug,...
