Christmas is big business for TV; the content mill of light romantic comedies set around the holidays and celebrity-driven specials has come to make December feel, at moments, like a forced march of glee. In all, though, Christmas entertainment of the Hallmark-movie variety seems intended to bring a smile to the face and lighten the mood — a lovely thing, if saccharine when taken to extremes.
That cloying sweetness around December each year makes “Santa Inc.” seem, in theory, like a corrective. The animated series, created by Alexandra Rushfield and starring Sarah Silverman and Seth Rogen, posits a North Pole that’s decidedly not for kids, so much so that the show’s depiction of sex and drugs grows to seem affected. “Santa Inc.” is notionally about Christmas: Silverman voices an ambitious elf who wants to be appointed to take on the role of Santa. No stranger to controversy, Sarah Silverman loves to ask the tough questions, but this time she may have gone too far. In her new animated adult comedy, Silverman plays an elf who longs to become the next Santa Claus, begging the question: Could the world ever accept a female Santa? Silverman stars opposite Seth Rogen as the portly Saint Nicholas, and the zippy new trailer offers a glimpse of this dynamic duo in action, as well as plenty of other comedy favorites in quippy voice roles.
Beginning with the logline “out with the old, in with the elf — it’s time for the North Pole boys’ club to get a little more inclusive,” the new HBO Max series launched a trailer today just in time for some provocative holiday discussion ahead of the series’ release next week. Silverman plays a purple elf named Candy Smalls, “the highest-ranking female elf in the North Pole.

In their first public appearance since WarnerMedia merged the two development divisions this past April, execs from HBO Max and Adult Swim previewed their upcoming slates, releasing new footage from adult-skewing offerings “10-Year-Old-Tom” and “Smiling Friends,” while talking up several more.
Created by Michael Cusack (“Yolo: Crystal Fantasy”) and Zack Hadel (of the popular YouTube channel “psychicpebbles”), “Smiling Friends” picks up where the viral 2020 short left off, following the lives of two hapless cheer merchants sent to make their clients smile. Mixing 2D, primitive character designs with candy colors and the winking edge of an online forum, the series is due out later this year.
“[Though they’re both well known independently,] combined, Hadel and Cusack are doing something really special,” said Walter Newman, senior VP comedy development at Adult Swim. “From the character designs to the voice work, it represents a lot of what we’re trying to accomplish here.”

When E.R. Fightmaster first read the scripts for Season 3 of “Shrill,” they were delighted to see their character’s pronouns had been changed — and with very little fanfare. After a brief stint on Season 2, Fightmaster impressed their way into a substantial recurring role as Em after displaying great chemistry with Fran (Lolly Adefope). Fran is the snarky best friend and perennial roommate of Aidy Bryant’s Annie, the show’s intrepid and cheerful main character, who is based on co-creator and co-writer Lindy West. As Fran’s dreamy new love interest, Fightmaster instantly became “Shrill” family.
With nary a comment from the writers, either behind the scenes or onscreen, the character’s name had changed from Emily to Em, and everyone on the show easily transitioned to using they/them pronouns.
If only it were that easy in real life, Fightmaster mused during a recent phone interview. “It’s...

Shrill is gearing up for its third and final season. Annie (Aidy Bryant) will be wrapping up her story when the Hulu comedy comes back this spring, but if the vibes at the end of the season two finale were any indication, she's in for some great things. When last we saw the somewhat humiliated Annie, she had dumped her boyfriend Ryan (Luka Jones) after he spilled the beans about their workplace hookup. Now, she's free to date someone else, like, for instance, Lamar (Akemnji Ndifornyen). There's at least got to be somebody better for her to end up with than Ryan. Bryant, who co-created the series with Alexandra Rushfield and author Lindy West, spoke about the end of the...

It’s the evolution of animation. It can be argued that “The Simpsons” opened the door for Cartoon Network’s Adult Swim, which in turn kicked down the door to let in shows including “Bojack Horseman,” “Archer” and “Rick & Morty.” U.S animators are serving up not only raunchy comedy but also sophisticated storytelling. Outside the U.S., animated features have a long history of telling difficult stories — most recently “The Swallows of Kabul” and “Funan” are two films that tackled horrific events. Animation aimed at adults is on the rise worldwide.
In his recently released white paper, “Adult Animation Finally Breaking Free of Its Comedy Shackles,” John Evershed, head of High Concentrate, which specializes in the packaging, development and sales of animated TV series and movies for adult audiences, notes that adult animated series have been driving ratings on both linear TV and SVODs for the past few years.

Few stories are as difficult to adapt for the screens as the Arthurian legends. Here’s a breakdown of why they’re so hard to get right.
“This week, Netflix released the first look at Cursed, a new version of the King Arthur legend starring Katherine Langford as Nimue, ‘a teenage heroine with a mysterious gift who is destined to become the powerful (and tragic) Lady of the Lake.’ It’s just the latest in a long ling of Arthurian series and movies, and its promise to tell the tale of how Nimue becomes some sort of rebellious leader against King Uther and his ‘Red Paladins’ makes me feel more tired than excited.”

Aidy Bryant “connected with so much of the material” in Lindy West‘s book “Shrill: Notes from a Loud Woman.” She identified with its message about “letting go of a lot of the shame that we have about our bodies and fear of being labeled fat or shrill.” So she teamed up with West and Alexandra Rushfield (“Parks and Recreation”) to adapt the book into a new Hulu series. Watch our exclusive video interview with Bryant above.

Bryant plays Annie Easton, an overweight woman who decides to stop trying to change her body and instead focuses on improving her life. Throughout the first season she works to define herself as a journalist while dealing with friendships, toxic boyfriends, and sickly parents.

Hulu has picked up a second season of comedy series Shrill, starring Saturday Night Live‘s Aidy Bryant. The streaming platform has ordered eight episodes, up from this season’s six, for premiere in 2020.
The series, which received a straight-to-series order for Season 1 and launched to strong reviews, hails from SNL boss Lorne Michaels’ Broadway Video (Portlandia), Elizabeth Banks and Max Handelman’s Brownstone Productions and Warner Bros. Television.
Shrill is based on Lindy West’s bestselling 2016 memoir, Shrill: Notes from a Loud Woman. It stars Bryant as Annie, described as a fat young woman who wants to change her life — but not her body. Annie is trying to make it as a journalist while juggling bad boyfriends, sick parents and a perfectionist boss, while the world around her deems her not good enough because of her weight. She starts to realize that she’s as good as anyone else,...

Like the Lindy West memoir that inspired it, Hulu’s “Shrill” tackles abortion, Internet trolling, love, and being fat. It’s a perspective that executive producer Elizabeth Banks describes as “revolutionary” — especially after she was left nonplussed when a female journalist at the Television Critics Association winter press tour asked: “You’ve been gorgeous your whole life. What did you understand about this material?”
Banks answered the question by simply saying the Aidy Bryant comedy is “something that everyone can relate to.” But afterward, she told IndieWire, “We left the panel, and we thought, ‘We have to make a hundred more of these shows, so that this just gets normal. … Lindy’s book points out that if you put a character like this on television, and make her a role model, that will be revolutionary.”
Added West, “There’s this great lie that if you spend all your money and...

Shrill has a complicated relationship with its source material but is nevertheless a fun half-hour Aidy Bryant party.
This is a spoiler-free review of Shrill.
What happens when you take the work of one of the sharpest feminist minds of our time and filter it through a feel-good half-hour comedy? I’m honestly not sure, and therein lies the problem.
Hulu has adapted Lindy West’s 2016 memoiristic essay collection Shrill: Notes from a Loud Woman, which deals predominantly with themes of gender, size, popular culture, and what it means when women take up space, as a vehicle for the incredibly talented Aidy Bryant. The show isn’t a straight adaptation of West’s best-selling book, which is similar to her work as a staff writer for Jezebel, New York Times contributor, and co-founder of Shout Your Abortion, but rather a fictional show that’s inspired by its themes and sometimes...

This year, the SXSW Film Festival’s selection committee sorted through 2,500 feature film submissions and 6,500 shorts to arrive at its program of 134 features and 110 shorts, which will unspool over nine days beginning March 8. For a festival that was initially seen as a younger sibling to the Austin conference’s music component, the film offerings are impressively deep, highlighted by world premieres that include Kevin Kolsch and Dennis Widmyer’s “Pet Sematary,” Olivia Wilde’s “Booksmart,” Harmony Korine’s “The Beach Bum,” John Lee Hancock’s “The Highwaymen” and Jordan Peele’s “Us.”
Yet ask festival director Janet Pierson about the imposing lineup, and she’s quick to note that the festival has actually slimmed down from previous years.

Since I haven't seen the first season of Hulu's Shrill quite yet, I can't say this for certain, but after watching the first teaser for it, I'm going to say it anyway: the new comedy series looks like a freakin' delight.
Starring Saturday Night Live alum and all-around gem Aidy Bryant in the lead role, the six-episode series is adapted from the memoir of blogger Lindy West (Shrill: Notes From a Loud Woman) that is described as "the story of a fat young woman who wants to change her life - but not her body." In Hulu's version of the story, Bryant plays Annie, a journalist struggling to juggle a not-so-great boyfriend (Luka Jones), problems with her ailing parents, and a perfectionist boss (John Cameron Mitchell), all while the world around her judges her for her weight. Fortunately, she also has the support of Fran, her best friend and roommate,...

Hulu is making some noise with Aidy Bryant. The streamer has placed a six-episode series order for Shrill, a comedy that finds the Saturday Night Live vet playing, per the logline, “a fat young woman who wants to change her life — but not her body.”

Rashida Jones may be leaving "Parks and Recreation" after the first 13 episodes of Season 6, but she's already got another job lined up. Sadly, it's not in front of the camera.
Jones and her "Celeste & Jesse Forever" writing partner, Will McCormack, are developing comedy "Stuck" for Fox, according to The Hollywood Reporter. The "Stuck" pilot was written by "Parks and Rec" scribe Alexandra Rushfield, and centers around a middle-aged woman who feels stuck in her monotonous bank job. The woman helps her "stuck in childhood" daughter get a job at the bank, but the plan backfires when her daughter becomes her boss. Rashida Jones and Will McCormack‘s recently launched production company is making a big entrance with a put pilot commitment at Fox. The network has bought Stuck, a single-camera comedy that teams Parks & Recreation co-star Jones and co-executive producer Alexandra Rushfield. The project is produced by Jones and McCormack’s Le Train Train in association with Warner Bros. Television where the company inked a pod deal in January. Penned by Rushfield, Stuck centers on a “stuck in a rut” middle-aged woman who works at a bank and gets her “stuck in childhood” daughter a job there. Within a day, the daughter is the mother’s boss. While working and living together, they help each other to get “unstuck.” Jones, who has no plans to star, executive produces with McCormack and Rushfield. Community, Season 4, Episode 3: “Conventions of Space and Time”
Written by Maggie BandurAlison
Directed by Michael Patrick Jann
Airs Thursdays at 8pm Et on NBC
Over the last few weeks, the new Community has been garnering a lot of comparisons to CBS’s The Big Bang Theory, and until tonight they had seemed hyperbolic. It’s very easy to imagine the script of “Conventions of Space and Time” repurposed as an episode of The Big Bang Theory. That’s something that could never be said, even at its most inconsistent, of Dan Harmon’s show. The episode is written and directed by newcomers which is telling, but the most bothersome aspect is the lengths to which it goes in an attempt to appease Harmon’s fans
We’re three episodes into season four and we’ve yet to see a single scene of the group sitting around the table in the study room.

30 Rock, Season 7, Episode 7, “Mazel Tov, Dummies!”
Written by Tracey Wigfield
Directed by Beth McCarthy-Miller
Airs Thursdays at 8pm Et on NBC
“Mazel Tov, Dummies!” is an episode that forces several characters—and perhaps the show itself, on a metaphorical level—to face their mortality (or in Tracy’s typically bizarro case, his perceived immortality). It hits on these themes early on with mentions of Ted Bundy and O.J. Simpson. These also create tension when John Hodgman’s Surge enthusiast appears; perhaps he has ulterior motives that extend beyond his desire to own Jenna? It is when Jack attempts to buy Jenna back that she becomes concerned about her perceived worthlessness. This reflects back on to Jack, who also realizes his life is likely peaking. Meanwhile, Tracy is experiencing this in the inverse, a lack of health problems requiring him to behave as if he has a future.
The antidote to this is Liz’s wedding.

Updated, 1/7: Each year, the five broadcast networks develop hundreds of scripted dramas and comedies in hopes they’ll become the next NCIS and Desperate Housewives, or the latest Modern Family and The Big Bang Theory. And like every year, a great deal of them are not worth mentioning here — mostly because they involve the bland types of cops, lawyers, and doctors who you’ve already seen fighting crime or sneaking a kiss on the way to the ER.
But fascinating projects continue to pass the first smell test at the broadcast networks. The key is whether the suits take...

"Undeclared" is now airing on IFC, and we thought we'd take this opportunity to revisit the show that further cemented broadcast television's inability to recognize the genius of Judd Apatow. Every week, Matt Singer and Alison Willmore will be offering their thoughts on two more episodes.
Episode 7
Addicts
Written by Jennifer Konner & Alexandra Rushfield
Directed by Greg Mottola
Episode 8
God Visits
Written by Rodney Rothman
Directed by John Hamburg
"All you had to do was get a few hundred dollars. How hard is that? Didn't you see 'Oliver'? That little bugger scammed people all over the place!" -- Ron
Alison: "Addicts" and "God Visits" deal with the financial and philosophical vulnerabilities of so many a naïve college student. In the first episode, Steven and crew take advantage of "free money" -- i.e., credit cards -- and find themselves in trouble after excursions into online trading and meth-addicted townie Dave's (Will Ferrell) paper-writing service.
