Netflix is getting in on Oppenheimer fever by ordering a doc about Albert Einstein’s complex relationship with Hitler, Germany and the devastating aftermath of the atomic bomb in Japan.
Einstein and the Bomb will mix Archie with dramatization and explore key moments in science genius Einstein’s let, and how his work change history’s course. Everything he says in the film is taken from words he said or wrote.
BBC Studios is producing, with James Van Der Pool and Andrew Cohen the EPs and Anthony Philipson the director.

Cinema Eye Honors, the organization that recognizes outstanding artistic achievement in nonfiction and documentary films & series, announced the first round of their 2023 awards and nominations at its annual Cinema Eye Fall Lunch held in Los Angeles.
In the five Broadcast categories, HBO film “Four Hours at the Capitol,” an inside look at the January 6th riot, led with three nominations: Broadcast Film, Broadcast Editing and Broadcast Cinematography. Other projects like the Disney+ docuseries “The Beatles: Get Back” and Showtime’s “We Need to Talk About Cosby” also received more than one nomination.

Netflix is ramping up its documentary series team in the UK with a pair of key hires.
Adam Hawkins will join the streamer later this year from Raw, where he was U.S. Creative Director and had credits including Don’t F**k with Cats and Three Identical Strangers. At Netflix he will lead the documentary series team in the UK, reporting to LA-based Director of Documentary Series, Gabe Spitzer.

Also, to further the franchise’s stardom, “RuPaul’s Drag Race Untucked,” a behind-the-scenes spinoff of the reality series, won the unstructured reality category for the first time.

Lace ‘em up, fans of top-notch sports docs: Netflix has renewed “Last Chance U: Basketball” for a second season and ordered what the streaming service is calling “Volume 2” of the excellent feature-length documentary series “Untold.”
The second season of “Last Chance U: Basketball” will return to East Los Angeles College Huskies (Elac) and head coach John Mosley. “Untold: Volume 2” will consist of four new stories told over four weeks, including a two-part film on Heisman Trophy finalist Manti Te’o. Directed by Ryan Duffy and Tony Vainuku, that one will feature interviews with Manti Te’o and the catfisher behind the hoax, Netflix said.
Additionally, Netflix has ordered a new docuseries, “Bad Sport,” which examines “six unbelievable stories at the intersection of sports and crime.”
“Bad Sport” episodes include the 2002 Salt Lake City Olympic figure skating scandal; superstar Indycar driver Randy Lanier’s marijuana-smuggling operation; the Arizona State University basketball point-shaving...

The show, which runs Sundays at 9 p.m. Et, beat out other cable news networks in its debut on Feb. 14, with 1.52 million viewers, according to Nielsen fast nationals. Last Sunday, its episode drew 1.64 million, according to Nielsen live-plus-same-day data. The show also topped in the key demo of adults 25-54.
The next season of the show will air in 2022. The first episodes featured Naples and the Amalfi Coast and Rome. Next week’s episode will be “Bologna.”

Exclusive: Raw Television, the All3Media-backed producer of Don’t F**k With Cats: Hunting An Internet Killer, has bagged another Netflix commission – a series looking at global sporting scandals.
Deadline understands that the company is making Bad Sport (w/t), which will look at a variety of scandalous sporting incidents around the world.
It comes after the company, which produced breakout doc feature Three Identical Strangers, launched its latest Netflix series Fear City: New York vs The Mafia on the streaming service earlier this month.
Three Identical Strangers director Tim Wardle, who joined the company in 2012 as Head of Development, is one of the exec producers of Bad Sport, alongside Alex Marengo, who exec produced Netflix series Killer Ratings, and Raw’s U.S. creative director Adam Hawkins.
Directors on the series include Luke Sewell, who directed BBC series Generation Gifted, and Alex Kiehl, who developed and directed Channel 4’s Sas: Who Dares Wins.
