Torchwood: Miracle Day is getting a follow-up, but not in the way you would've originally expected. Instead of heading back to the small screen, Captain Jack Harkness' next adventure will take place in the audio drama medium, thanks to the fine folks at Big Finish.
Russell T Davies is overseeing this new audio endeavour, which has been given the title Torchwood - Series 5: Aliens Among Us. Here's the first trailer...
"In this series, Captain Jack and Gwen Cooper have restarted Torchwood in Cardiff, home of the original Torchwood Three", the official synopsis tells us (via CultBox).
"But it’s in a very different Cardiff. Something terrible’s happened to the city. With every day getting darker, will Torchwood need to adopt a whole new approach?"

Jenna Coleman might be quitting Doctor Who, but her next project will see the actress share the screen with other veterans of the sci-fi series.
Torchwood star Eve Myles and The Sarah Jane Adventures actor Tommy-Lawrence Knight will join Coleman in ITV's new drama Victoria.
The eight-part series - charting the early life of Queen Victoria (Coleman) - will also star BAFTA nominee Rufus Sewell as Lord Melbourne, Victoria's first prime minister.
Melbourne formed an intimate friendship with Victoria, with their intimate friendship becoming a popular source of gossip that threatened to destabilise the Government.
Myles will play Mrs Jenkins, the Queen's senior dresser, while Knight is the hall boy, Brodie. Spooks star Peter Firth, Being Human actor Paul Rhys and Outlander's Nell Hudson are also among the cast.

Torchwood is back - on audio - and Naoko Mori could be reprising her role of Toshiko 'Tosh' Sato.
Mori told Digital Spy that she has been approached about playing Tosh again in Big Finish's series of audio dramas.
"I miss Torchwood so much," she admitted. "On Twitter, there's been a lot of fans saying, 'Bring it back!' - and it would be so nice to do something.
"I know there's a radio thing happening and they've talked to me about it as well, so hopefully that'll happen in due course."
It's been seven years since Tosh - and her unrequited love interest Owen (Burn Gorman) - were killed off in the gut-wrenching episode 'Exit Wounds'. But if you're still not over it, don't worry - neither is Naoko.
"Still to this day, just thinking about it makes me feel very sad," she said. "That was a really tough scene.

Following in the footsteps of Captain Jack and Ianto, Gwen and Rhys will return for a new Big Finish Torchwood audio story…
Big Finish – the team who have brought us countless Doctor Who audio adventures and several spin-offs – are continuing their Torchwood-themed recruitment drive.
Specifically, they've found a space for Gwen Cooper and Rhys Williams. The loveable couple, described accurately in the press bumf as ‘the heart of Torchwood,’ will return for the third release in Big Finish’s upcoming Torchwood series.
Following in the tradition of bringing back the original cast members (the first story will feature John Barrowman returning as Captain Jack, and the second will star Gareth David-Lloyd as Ianto), Big Finish has nabbed Eve Myles and Kai Owen to reprise their roles from the show.
“Listening to the two of them back together is an utter joy,” says producer James Goss. “We pick up their story after Miracle Day.

Talk of a Doctor Who feature film has been around for some time, with speculation in 2009 suggesting it would be announced at that summer's San Diego Comic-Con.
Kai Owen, from spin-off show Torchwood, told the Coventry Telegraph he was aware of the rumours and thought a big-budget Hollywood production could work really well.

Kai Owen, from spin-off show Torchwood, told the Coventry Telegraph he was aware of the rumours and thought a big-budget Hollywood production could work really well.

A steaming pile of “meh”.
It’s fascinating to look back at the first episode of Miracle Day and realize how much potential there was. It’s depressing to look at the last episode and realize exactly where we ended up.
Our story concludes with Jack (John Barrowman), Gwen (Eve Myles), and Danes (Bill Pullman), in Shanghai following a trail from Jack’s blood, which seems to be homing in on the Blessing. Meantime, Rex (Mekhi Phifer), and Esther (Alexis Havins), are in Buenos Ares, trying to track down the other side of the Blessing. And back in Wales, Rhys (Kai Owen), is trying to track down Gwen’s dad before he’s burned.
Let’s start with Rhys. He’s able to get into the camp where Gwen’s dad is located pretty easily. He has some last words for the old man (who is...

Miracle Day: The Gathering
Spoilers Within
With only one week to go, Miracle Day is proving to be one hell of a ride. We are finally getting a wider shot of the bigger picture: The Three Families, the “Blessing”, political subterfuge, socio-economic breakdown, paranoia. But the real kick in the head is how it all seems to keep coming back to Jack.
Jack and Esther found their way to Scotland, where Jack is on the mend from his gunshot wound, and Esther is bagging his blood. While Jack tells her there’s no reason to as it’s not special, she can’t shake the fact that it had been collected when he was being tortured back in 1928 and the Families were very interested in it. Meanwhile in Wales, Gwen and Rhys are staying with Mary, where they are hiding Gwen’s dad Geraint, and Gwen has been reduced to...

You ever been out on a date with someone and they initially seem exciting and interesting, maybe a bit sexy and possibly even a little dangerous, but in a good way? Then they start showing you photos of their twenty cats, and talking about all their exes, and by the end, all you really want is for the check to arrive so you can make your goodbyes and never call them again?
Welcome to episode nine of Torchwood: Miracle Day.
Our episode picks up exactly where last week’s left off and…oh, wait. No, in fact, it doesn’t. It actually picks up seven weeks after the previous episode. We’re told that in the meantime, a lot of implausible stuff has happened and the Miracle is continuing. After last week’s controversial episode of Torchwood: Miracle Day, the question that haunted us was not whether it was okay to torture a man to death if he cannot die, but rather: who killed Torchwood? For a show that fans had been clamoring for and which cheered when it was announced that it had risen from certain death and cancellation by the joint financial efforts of Starz and BBC America to resurrect it as an American television series, who knew that within such a short timeframe that one would be wishing it had never been raised from the dead.
The irony is that Torchwood: Miracle Day tells the tale of what the world would look like if death ceased to exist. Miracle Day was the day that people stopped dying. Death had finally abandoned us and left the entire human race to rot for eternity. The blessing soon became...

Is it just me or does it seem like this episode and the previous one should have been combined into one 65 minute episode? It really feels like there wasn’t enough material here for two episodes, and that’s just the start of the problems.
“Miracle Men” picks up directly off of last week’s story, “Categories of Life,” with Rex (Mekhi Phifer), Esther (Alexis Havins), Gwen (Eve Myles), and Rhys (Kai Owen), all still stuck at the camps while Dr Juarez gets swept into a bin. I do believe she managed to set the record for the shortest lifespan ever after joining Torchwood.
As last week’s episode focused on their various efforts to get into the camps, this week focuses on the team’s various efforts to get out of the camps. Rex plans to take evidence and Gwen wants to take her father.

Torchwood: Miracle Day's Kai Owen has said that his character Rhys is determined to protect his wife Gwen (Eve Myles) and their baby. Owen explained that Rhys will likely never be a fully-fledged member of the Torchwood team, but he will always be willing to join forces with Captain Jack when Earth is threatened. "Rhys will never be a fully-fledged team member, I guess. He will always be sort of this outside member who is kind of secretly on the books. He knows all the secrets of Torchwood and how they are confronted by the strange and the weird," Owen told The Chicago Tribune. "Whenever Gwen asks if he can give her a hand he'll oblige because hopefully then the situation will be over as soon as possible and Gwen can come back home to him safe and sound. Rhys would rather there be no Torchwood, but he does give them a helping hand,...

Creator: Russell T. Davies.
Cast: John Barrowman, Eva Myles, and Kai Owen
Just how does the world cope with a sudden population explosion, when death has been erased from the human condition? That's what writer/producer Russell T. Davies is raising in "Torchwood: Miracle Day." Now into its mid-season episode, the series explores the problems and fears that governs mans inhumanity to man. Not only are the world's resources being strained but there's also no place to give the people who are supposed to be dead a space to exist. This tale that Davies has created is perhaps his best to date.
This series' roots as a science fiction product may be a shortcoming, but ever since Children of the Earth, an homage to Village of the Damned, this series has grown. It can hardly be regarded as a "Doctor Who" spin-off and the issues it tackles is barely recognized in North American entertainment.

Esther Drummond (Alexis Havins), is obviously a nice woman, but not, it must be said, the brightest star in the Eastern sky. Last week when we saw Rex Matheson (Mekhi Phifer), try to rendezvous with his former CIA instructor, he was at least smart enough to do it at a distance and wait in the shadows to see what happens.
Esther displays no such smarts when, early in this episode, she goes to visit her sister. She finds out that her sister has gone around the bend and is living in a boarded-up house, absorbing rumors about diseases running rampant through major cities. She has two small children in the house, and Esther is understandably worried about them, so she calls Child Protective Services to investigate, then drives off, unaware that she’s picked up a tail (C Thomas Howell).
Meantime, the Torchwood team packs up and relocates to Los Angeles.

“Miracle Day: The New World”
[Spoilers Within]
A lot seems to have happened in two years.
Two years ago, we said goodbye to Captain Jack Harkness, who was hitching a ride with some aliens to get off of the planet after the events of 'Children of Earth'. A grandson sacrificed, a daughter angry and unforgiving, and the last remnant of the great Torchwood Institute was in rubble, its members dead save for Jack and Gwen Cooper. With only a brief scene of him in a bar across the galaxy in David Tennant’s last Doctor Who story – in which The Doctor seems to give him absolution for his actions – we were left wondering where the story could possibly go from there. We endured more than a year of rumours about a new series, American networks and possible casting, but at long last Starz and BBC have finally premièred the latest instalment in the Torchwood saga: 'Miracle Day'.

It's an exciting day for all the Whovians out there. Tonight at 10 p.m. (Et/Pt), the fourth season of the Doctor Who spinoff Torchwood premieres on the Starz network. Dubbed Torchwood: Miracle Day, the new season of this cult favorite is set in America. And to add insult to injury, it won't air on U.K. telly until July 14 — just one more reason for the Brits to hate us Yanks.

Death takes a holiday.
Imagine that no one dies. Plants and animals continue with their normal life-cycles, but humans don’t. They sustain massive injuries, get blown up, stabbed, burned, what have you, but yet they live and live and live without the great surcease of pain. For some this would be a blessing; time granted to them while surgeons repair damaged bodies. To others it would be a living hell no one should ever endure.
This is the situation the world finds itself in at the start of “The New World,” the first episode of Torchwood: Miracle Day. It’s the fourth series to of the Doctor Who spinoff be produced and the first to be co-produced with the American television network Starz.
As the story opens, we find a man, Oswald Dane (Bill Pullman), about to be executed for the rape and murder of a twelve-year-old girl.

There is perhaps no more polarizing, yet inspiring series on television than Torchwood. It provokes heated debate about the value of human life and our efforts to preserve it at all costs. But it also reminds us that there is an amazing world within the universe, which it has created, and it invites us to play there for a while. So while Torchwood will galvanize fans with its shocking deaths, it also makes one weep with joy for having been granted the privilege of knowing those wondrous characters.
As Torchwood returns for its fourth season, it promises to provide yet another shock-and-awe story. Having closed the book on the story of season three with the ultimate sacrifice, season four introduces a brand new story of adventure. With the show transplanting from the U.K. to the U.S. in search of greener pastures (not to mention the funding necessary for...

On Torchwood, Gwen Cooper has faced down extraterrestrial threats to life on Earth and always survived. But Eve Myles, the actress who plays Gwen, shooting Torchwood: Miracle Day involved a terrifying new challenge: Driving on the right-hand side of the road.
Eve Myles as Gwen Cooper. Presumably Myles doesn't drive with a gun.
“I’ve been petrified for I don’t know how long,” recounts the Welsh-born actress between takes on the show’s Burbank set. “And I thought if this is going to be like the first time I rode a bike, where I went straight towards a wall, so I covered my eyes with my hands and hit the wall, please don’t do this in the car.”

Here is what Barrowman had to say about the show:
“We’ve got helicopters. We’ve got explosions. We’ve got car crashes. We’ve got poisonings. You name it, we got it on Torchwood.”
Check out the video below:
Show Description:
One day, nobody dies. All across the world, nobody dies. And then the next day, and the next, and the next, people keep aging -- they get hurt and sick -- but they never die. The result: a population boom, overnight.
With all the extra people,...

When I walk onto the Los Angeles set of Torchwood: Miracle Day, John Barrowman is in full performance mode, but the cameras aren’t rolling. Everyone’s waiting for the next scene to be ready, so in the meantime, Barrowman is entertaining the crew and his fellow cast members with an elaborate anecdote that involved two perfectly-executed pratfalls and a dead-on impersonation of Carol Channing.
With that kind of showman’s instinct, it’s no surprise that Barrowman, 44, has become an international sensation for his starring role as Torchwood’s Captain Jack Harkness, a bisexual, immortal con man who spends his days chasing down aliens and other bizarre phenomena. But even when he’s not topping the bill on the hit BBC series, which has traveled Stateside for its new season, co-produced by the Starz network, the Scottish-born, Illinois-raised Barrowman keeps his fanbase busy with multiple projects in his adopted...

Starz The Torchwood team
When news broke out that “Torchwood” would be adapted to the U.S. as a new Starz series, fans of the BBC sci-fi drama expressed concerns that the show would be “Americanized,” especially since “Miracle Day” is set in Los Angeles. Actor John Barrowman spoke with Speakeasy to assure us that this new installment of the franchise is merely an evolution of “Torchwood.” It helps that Barrowman and co-star Eve Myles will reprise their roles as...

Bill Pullman, Eve Myles, Kai Owen
The Torchwood universe sees a lot of changes in its new season, Miracle Day, which premieres on Starz July 8. For veteran cast members, it’s the first time that the series has filmed in Hollywood, half a world away from its original Cardiff setting. And with a new location comes new American cast members joining the show -- and new expectations from viewers.
During production, AfterElton had the opportunity to visit the famed Warner Bros. lot in Burbank, Calif., where returning stars Eve Myles (who plays the Torchwood Institute’s Gwen Cooper) and Kai Owen (Gwen’s adoring husband Rhys) talked about the delightful culture shock of coming to sunny L.A., while newbie Bill Pullman (cast as infamous murderer and child-molester Oswald Danes) discussed becoming a part of this worldwide hit.
