Saturday Night Live‘s holiday episode might still be two weeks away, but this week’s Ryan Gosling-hosted installment was most definitely a case of Christmas coming early.

While the Canadian heartthrob’s opening monologue wasn’t especially inspired — not even with fellow north-of-the-border import Mike Myers offering support — the remainder of Gosling’s episode ranked among the better SNL installments of the last few seasons.
The strictest of viewers might’ve objected to Gosling’s multiple thisclose-to-breaking incidents, but to me, the fact that the Notebook actor was clearly amused by the...

It’s hard to describe the two-week long Television Critics Association Press Tour, which is going on now through August 8th in Los Angeles.
But, just so you know, it’s a flurry of new television show panels, one-on-one interviews and parties where you try to chat with as many actors, network executives and producers as possible about their respective shows.
A few have stood out so far since the TCAs started last week and so I empty out this Notebook with some insight into both the new (The Blacklist, The Originals and Hostages) and returning (Dallas) programs that I know I’m excited about...

You’d think after a long holiday weekend my notebook would be fairly light, but it’s been a busy back-to-work week. I’ve got Sons of Anarchy scoop, Scandal spoilers and Cougar Town tidbits to pass along...
... But first, I want to mention the passing of a TV icon Larry Hagman. I remember the original Dallas, so was thrilled when TNT rebooted the prime time soap earlier this year. One of the most exciting things about Dallas Season 1 was that Jr, who Hagman began playing in 1978, was still Jr and Hagman was clearly having a blast stirring the pot with Jr’s devilish ways.
Doing press for the show was just as thrilling and meeting Hagman, as well as other original cast members Patrick Duffy and Linda Gray, was a marvel because the actor was so full of life, cracking jokes and fist bumping every journalist in the press...

This week’s Jim’s Notebook gets emptied out with a glance ahead to November, when so many great shows are either premiering or returning with new episodes.
I also take a look at the upcoming new season of Dallas with one of the cast members. And, after getting an early peek at tonight’s episode of Fringe, a non-spoilery plea from yours truly to not miss "The Bullet That Saved The World."
But let’s swing by Rosewood first...
Pretty Little Liars: The annual Halloween episode that aired earlier this week kicked some butt in the ratings but also deepened the mystery of the show, thanks to the expert storytelling of Executive Producer Joseph Dougherty. We definitely had some chilling moments: the lives of both Aria and Spencer were threatened; Mona continued her dastardly ways; someone definitely died and Adam Lambert rocked the Ghost Train.

After a mixed bag of a summer, Premium Rush is a welcome surprise at the cinema. Arriving at the midpoint of the “Year of Joseph Gordon-Levitt”, Premium Rush takes a simple story and adds enough visual flair and inventiveness to make it worth checking out.
Premium Rush follows Wilee (Joseph Gordon-Levitt), a New York City bicycle messenger who ends up carrying a package that Bobby Monday (Michael Shannon), a dirty police cop, needs badly. The setup is simple and leads to ninety-minutes of chasing with more and more people joining in at every turn. By the end of the movie the only people missing from the chase are a marching band.
The plot of Premium Rush didn’t sound that appealing to me, and probably won’t to most other people, but the film is amplified by the execution. David Koepp (writer of Jurassic Park and...

Chicago – We’re looking for cowboy heroes in America, and a new film contends that the urban bike messenger could represent that long lost persona. This unlikely theory is the basis for “Premium Rush,” and it features Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Michael Shannon, Aasif Mandvi and Dania Ramirez.
Rating: 3.0/5.0
The life of a bike messenger in this film involves a parallel universe of the adrenaline junkie riding the plane, nobly following a code that is unwavering to money, authority and the laws of gravity. “Premium Rush” is riddled with archetypes like the twitchy dispatcher, the over-competitive rival, the wise old messenger and the hates-him-until-she-loves-him relationship. Actor Michael Shannon adds a bit of weirdness to the conventional story, but it’s not enough to overcome the soft narrative veneer that pretends to be high octane. It may be the first high octane film that has the ability to induce sleep.

Go Fug Yourself on Reese Witherspoon (and child) in France
Mubi's Notebook lists favorite Cannes films of 2012 (the winner being way down the list)
Film School Rejects Why blockbusters need to get their third act together. Heartily agree with much of this.
TV|Line Smash will lose two of its major male characters in Season 2. Does this mean Dennis & Bobby get more screen time? (I know it doesn't but my wishful thinking can be noisy and demand sentences all its own.)
Av Club wins the Best Snarky Headline of the Week (*not a real award) with this beauty... "Malin Akerman is playing Debbie Harry, who is also blonde."
Pajiba Most Versatile Bruce Willis
No Film School Most Fascinating Michael Haneke
Coming Soon new Les Miserables photos. Apparently the trailer arrives today as well. We'll hear the people sing tonight in a Yes No Maybe So post.

When we quiet and polite Canadians first began planning our non-violent take-over of Pajiba I breezily volunteered to do a Famous Canadians list. How difficult could it be to pick 10 Canadians who were famous for being more than just incredibly polite motherfuckers? Seventeen hours and eleventy billion Google hits later it became apparent that it was much more difficult than you bitches think. We've managed to smuggle, I mean introduce, a helluva lot of Canadians into the Us over the years and while some of them stick out like wearing a toque on a hot summer day, others have managed to blend in so well even I was surprised to discover they were one of us. So, in order to whittle my list down to 10 I decided to only include people who were universally recognized as Canadians.
And yeah, I realize there are famous Canadians out there other than actors (hello Frank Gehry!
