It was only a matter of time before someone named a horror movie after FrightFest. Unfortunately, this dismal effort (also known as American Fright Fest) from director Anton Novakovic isn’t worthy of the festival that bears its name. In fact, it’s so bad that it makes the similarly themed, similarly titled and similarly not very good Blood Fest (also released this year) look like a masterpiece by comparison.
Set in smalltown Somerton, Pennsylvania (“The safest small town in America”), Fright Fest centres on washed up, drug-crazed horror director Spencer Crowe (Dylan Walsh), who’s hired to create a live action Halloween event by vote-hungry Mayor Fowler. Crowe’s Fright Fest takes place in an abandoned asylum,...

Name: Minutes to Midnight
Age: 2018
Appearance: Action/comedy/horror slasher featuring a cast of B-movie acting greats and a couple of wrestlers.
Wait a minute…
I love wrestling. Big Daddy… Giant Haystacks…
Sadly, neither men are in it for they are no longer with us. (R.I.P) But you do get John “Johnny Impact” Hennigan playing a backpacker named Travis and Aaron “Jesus/Uno” Aguilera as the hulking psychopath Angus.
A killer named Angus? Ooooh scary…
He’s the deformed son of a family of psychopaths. You also get Calypso (an athletic Mercy Malick) and Gimple.
Angus, Gimple, and Calypso. Sounds like a 60s folk trio. What’s it all about?
Evoking many a horror film,...

*full disclosure: this critic has worked on some publicity for Circle, earlier in 2015. **there are some spoilers here. Directors/writers: Aaron Hann and Mario Miscione. Cast: Julie Benz, Mercy Malick, Carter Jenkins and Autumn Federici. Circle is a psychological horror feature. From Taggart Productions and Votiv Films, the film stars Julie Benz (Saw V), Mercy Malick, Autumn Federici and Michael Nardelli. Circle had its World Premiere at the Seattle International Film Festival, in May of 2015. And, Circle is a compelling feature that looks at people's inherent biases, in a psychological fashion. The characters are diverse, but most of their motivations are unified by their will to survive. Though, some find their own demise a little quicker than others. Overall, the film is an entertaining feature. But, the social message is a little disconcerting; dishonesty has its rewards. The film begins in a large black room. A machine lies in the center,...

Votiv Films and Taggart Productions have released the first trailer for their upcoming psychological thriller Circle. The film – written and directed by Aaron Hann and Mario Miscione – is an intense real-time thriller, which uniquely examines humanity under the worst possible circumstances that stars Carter Jenkins, Julie Benz, Mercy Malick, Allegra Masters, Michael Nardelli, Autumn Federici, Lawrence Kao, Kevin Sheridan and Cesar Garcia.
In a massive, mysterious chamber, fifty strangers awaken to find themselves trapped with no memory of how they got there. Organized in an inward-facing circle and unable to move, they quickly learn that every two minutes one of them must die… executed by a strange device in the center of the room. At first the attacks seem random, but soon the strangers realize that they, as a group, have the power to decide who will be the next to be killed. A vote. A chance to control the machine.

I'm not sure if the 2010 direct-to-dvd movie Freeway Killer is any good or not, but Mercy Malick's nude scene is worth a look. The movie is already available on DVD and is based on the true story of William Bonin, a California serial killer known as the "Freeway Killer." Bonin tortured, raped and killed a minimum of 21 boys and young men between 1979 and 1980. He was executed in 1996. This "Freeway Killer" should not be confused with Patrick Kearney, captured 1977, and Randy Steven Kraft, captured 1983.

Tales From The Catholic Church of Elvis is wacky and laugh out loud funny. Mercy Malick directs and stars in this outlandish story about a girl growing up in Las Vegas. Malick carries this film with her conversational narrative that anchors the reenactments of zany tales about fast-food jobs, annoying little brothers and nuns in Catholic school. The trailer doesn't do the film justice, it's so wildly weird that you have to watch it in full to appreciate the humor. If you're in the mood for a goofy Harold & Kumar type comedy then you'll enjoy this movie.

With the fall of some of the early web content studios like maniaTV, 60Frames and ABC/Disney's Stage 9, there were some web series projects that went down with their ships that we thought might never see the light of day. Trenches, a sci-fi action series from creator Shane Felux was one such project. Our last check in with Felux was in August of 2008, when Stage 9 had released its pricey comedy series Squeegees to mixed results. A few months later ABC shuttered its nascent digital studio, leaving Trenches in distribution purgatory. Now the series has found a new home, with Sony Pictures Television licensing the project from ABC to be released starting February 16, 2010 on Crackle. Set in the future on a a distant war torn planet, the story centers around two groups of opposing soldiers fighting against each other only to realize that the real enemy is something else. The 10-episode series,...
