- (1964) He wrote the song, "Time is On My Side," for jazz trombonist Kai Winding and his orchestra. It was later recorded by Irma Thomas and The Rolling Stones where it reached the American Top 10. The Rolling Stones also performed the song on their first appearance of the Ed Sullivan Show that year.
- (1967 - 1968) He and Bert Berns wrote "Piece of My Heart" for Erma Franklin, Aretha Franklin's older sister. The song was recorded by Janis Joplin for her 1968 album, "Cheap Thrills" with the Big Brother and the Holding Company. It would become one of her best recorded hits.
- (1970) Janis recorded the song, "Try (Just a Little Bit Harder)" and collaborated between him and Chip Taylor on her first solo album. Her last album, "Pearl" included three of his songs, "My Baby," "Get It While You Can," and "Cry Baby" but she died in October 1970. She was supposed to record his song, "I'm Gonna Rock My Way to Heaven."
- (1966) He became head of artists and repertory for Warner Brothers Records on the East Coast in New York City. He began producing and writing for Lorraine Ellison on the Loma Label.
