Casting turnover is the name of the game when it comes to the Law & Order franchise. Through 23 seasons of the flagship series (and not even to mention the many spinoffs), Law & Order has cycled through dozens of casting combinations in filling out both the “law” and “order” halves of its ensemble.
When Law & Order returned for season 21 in 2022 after a lengthy hiatus, it looked like it had a solid detective duo in place with Anthony Anderson’s Kevin Bernard and Jeffrey Donovan’s Frank Cosgrove. Now, just two years later both actors are gone. Anderson departed after season 21 and Donovan after season 22.
Law & Order season 23 pairs Mehcad Brooks’ Jalen Shaw (who replaced Anderson) with newbie Vincent Riley, played by recognizable face Reid Scott. If you’re wondering who Reid Scott is and what makes him a good fit for this crime drama, don’t worry – we’ve got the answers.

A new NYPD detective will be joining the force on the upcoming 23rd season of Law & Order. The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel and Veep alum Reid Scott has joined the upcoming season as a new series regular on the NBC police procedural, portraying an as-yet unamed NYPD detective.
Scott will feel the void left by former series regular Jeffrey Donovan, who recently exited the show over creative differences. Donovan portrayed Det. Frank Cosgrove in seasons 21 and 22 of the mothership Law & Order drama from Dick Wolf’s Wolf Entertainment.
This marks the second detective change on the revival. Anthony Anderson, who reprised his role as Det. Kevin Bernard from the series’ original run, left after Season 21 and was succeeded by Mehcad Brooks, who joined the cast in Season 22 as Frank’s new partner Jalen Shaw.
The Law & Order cast also includes Sam Waterston as Da Jack McCoy, Hugh Dancy as senior prosecutorial assistant Nolan Price, and Camryn Manheim (The Practice) as Lt. Kate Dixon.
Law & Order, which premieres its 23rd season on January 18, 2024, is produced by Wolf Entertainment and Universal Television, a division of Universal Studio Group.
Scott recently starred in the fifth and final season of Emmy-winning The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel after recurring in Season 4. He can currently be seen starring in the “Daphne” episode of FX anthology series American Horror Stories. He earlier starred on another Emmy-winning comedy, HBO’s Veep, for seven seasons. Scott just wrapped production on the Amazon film Idea of You, starring opposite Anne Hathaway and directed by Michael Showalter. Reid also stars in, and executive produced the pandemic comedy Who Invited Charlie? opposite Adam Palley and Jordana Brewster, as well as the comedy ensemble Wildflower. Scott is repped by Gersh, Impression Entertainment and Ggssc.

Jeffrey Donovan will not be returning as Detective Cosgrove for Season 23 of “Law & Order,” Variety has confirmed.
According to TVLine, who was first to report the news, producers are already on the search for a new series regular. The outlet reports sources claim the two parted ways due to creative differences.
Donovan joined the cast in 2021, portraying Detective Cosgrove in Seasons 21 and 22 of the series revival. Cosgrove, a junior detective, joined the NYPD team as the new partner of Det. Kevin Bernard (Anthony Anderson). “Frank is a tough-as-nails detective that seeks justice by whatever means necessary. Every legal drama needs a bad cop, and Donovan shines,” reads his official character description, per NBC.
Probably best known for his leading work as former CIA operative Michael Westen on the USA series “Burn Notice” for seven seasons, Donovan also gained recognition with notable roles on FX’s “Fargo” and Hulu’s “Shut Eye.

It looks like there’s going to need to be a new detective working alongside Jalen Shaw (Mehcad Brooks) when Law & Order returns for its 23rd season (a premiere date has yet to be announced). Jeffrey Donovan, who has played Detective Frank Cosgrove on the NBC drama since it returned for its 21st season in 2022, is exiting ahead of the new season, reports TVLine. According to the outlet’s sources, he “was let go for creative reasons” and there will be a new series regular joining the cast, which, in addition to Brooks, includes Sam Waterston (D.A. Jack McCoy), Camryn Manheim (Lieutenant Kate Dixon), Hugh Dancy (Ada Nolan Price), and Odelya Halevi (Ada Samantha Maroun). Brooks came in as Cosgrove’s partner last season after Anthony Anderson, who returned from the original run as Detective Kevin Bernard for one season, exited. Now, it’ll be Shaw’s turn to get a new partner.

Law & Order is trying new things in Season 22. Premiering September 22 in a franchise crossover event, the new season will still pull straight from the headlines, but it will explore new formats as well. “We learned from watching the first 10 episodes, and we’re trying to make [the show] more compelling,” executive producer Rick Eid notes for Law & Order Season 22. “We’ll probably be less faithful to the [traditional] format and try a little more character and maybe a little more action.” The Law & Order revival welcomes Mehcad Brooks’ Shaw. He’s an intellectual lawyer turned narcotics detective whom Detective Frank Cosgrove (Jeffrey Donovan) requested to replace the transferred Kevin Bernard (Anthony Anderson). Plus, we’ll see newly minted detective Violet Yee, an ambitious former patrol officer. Ripped-from-the-headlines tales include a dive into the Supreme Court’s overturning of Roe v. Wade about an abortion-seeking woman who comes to the city...

“Law & Order” showrunner Rick Eid, who co-wrote the three-hour premiere episode, told TheWrap that the characters from all three series will be working together on the same case, which centers around the murder of a young girl that leads to an international crime ring.
“We’re excited about it. It’s a pretty big event. It’s really like a three-hour movie where all the characters from all the different shows are integrated, seamlessly, I hope, into one big story. When Law & Order returned earlier this year after several years off the air, fans were happy to have some familiar faces back for the revival.
When Law & Order Season 22 returns in the fall, Anthony Anderson will not be back.
That much we've known for a while, and now, the beloved actor is opening up about his decision.
"I wanted to go off and create more shows like Black-ish, create things that I have ownership in, and do something a little bit different," he explained to Entertainment Tonight.
"We're going out and pitching another drama called Miraculous, which I'm excited about, so looking forward to what that's going to do," he added.
The actor, who played Kevin Bernard on the legal drama, only signed a one-year deal.

There's a new detective on the force. Supergirl alum Mehcad Brooks is joining the cast of Law & Order season 22, NBC announced June 13. He will play a detective on the upcoming season, helping to fill the role of Anthony Anderson, who left the show after completing his yearlong contract with the revival series. Back in February, Law & Order returned for season 21 following a decade-long hiatus with Sam Waterston and Anderson reprising their roles as detectives Kevin Bernard and Jack McCoy respectively. Law & Order Season 22 is rounding out its cast following some high-profile departures.
Supergirl veteran, Mehcad Brooks, has landed a role on the Dick Wolf procedural.
Brooks will play a detective, but we don't have any details about the character beyond that, unfortunately.
The star is best known for playing Jimmy Olsen on The CW's Supergirl, a role he left behind during Supergirl Season 5.
Thankfully for fans, he returned one year later for the series finale of the Melissa Benoist-led superhero drama.
Brooks has also appeared on True Blood, The Game, and even an episode of Law & Order: Svu.
Anthony Anderson, who reprised his role as Detective Kevin Bernard on the revival season, has departed after one season back in the role.
Anderson signed a one-year deal when his casting was announced, and recent reports have suggested the star wanted to help get the revival off the ground before moving on to new projects.
