The Black List 2018 is here — a survey of the best screenplays that have not yet gone into production.
This year, the 73 films included films about Serena and Venus Williams’ hard-driving father (Zach Baylin’s “King Richard”), the sexual assault case against former NBA star Kobe Bryant (Mike Schneider’s “Mamba”) and Cody Brotter’s “Drudge” about The Drudge Report founder Matt Drudge and how he broke the Monica Lewinsky scandal.
The list also includes Emmy winner Lena Waithe’s “Queen & Slim,” a disgruntled Snapchat employee’s account of founder Evan Spiegel (Elissa Karasik’s “Frat Boy Genius”) and Gary Spinelli’s “Rub & Tug” a project that has been in limbo since Scarlett Johansson’s exit from the project because of objections to her playing a trans man.

Below is a guest post from writer, director producer Ryan Jaffe, whose film "This is Happening" is in select theaters now. I have no idea if the distribution model we've chosen is going to work. In fact, it may very well fail. But if I'm going down, I'm going down swinging. I refuse to be a filmmaker that doesn't at least try to not be fucked by the powers that seem to fuck first-time filmmakers on a fairly regular basis. For the vast majority of us, such a fate may be unavoidable. As for "This Is Happening," we're only in the favorable position we find ourselves now because we failed. We didn't get into a major festival. We weren't scooped by a giant distributor. The offers we did get felt masochistic; as if we should be grateful for the torn hamstring we were about to experience from doing the splits just because someone wanted us.

While "Greetings From Tim Buckley" premiered in Toronto recently, the other (and officially sanctioned) Jeff Buckley biopic "Mystery White Boy" still hasn't made it into production.
Now, Showbiz 411 (via The Playlist) seem to have discovered one possible reason why - a reshuffling of personnel behind the scenes.
At last report a few months ago, "Spider-Man" musical lead and "The Tempest" actor Reeve Carney was set to play the lead role while Jake Scott was directing. Now it seems "West Of Memphis" helmer Amy Berg has taken over directorial duties while Carney looks like he's out of the running.
Ryan Jaffe ("The Rocker") adapted the script from David Browne's book "Dream Brother". The story not only chronicles Buckley's life story, but also has access to his catalog of music.
Gemma Arterton, Olivia Thirlby, Harry Treadaway and Patricia Arquette were also previously linked to roles, whether that's still the case is unsure.

The upcoming biopic of the tragic singer’s life is being directed by Jake Scott and he has already found his leading man in Reeve Carney, (he of The Tempest fame.) The movie is rumoured to be called Mystery White Boy, the film follows Buckley’s life and career which was cut short by his tragic death at the age of 30. With other Buckley tribute projects underway such as Greetings from Tim Buckley it seems this offering will be well received as it has the blessing of the real life Mary Guibert and the director also has access to personal archives and key permission to use Buckley’s classic version of Leonard Cohen’s Hallelujah. This will be Arquette’s second collaboration with the director; she...

The Jake Scott version of Jeff Buckley biopic has finally found its leading man. The "Welcome to the Rileys" director has chosen Reeve Carney to portray the late musician in the project which is still untitled.
Explaining his reason to pick the 28-year-old actor, who sounds not familiar in Hollywood, Scott said, "We are excited to have found in Reeve the perfect combination of musical prodigy, impish charm, innate intelligence and sensitivity to play Jeff." Carney himself is best known for playing Peter Parker a.k.a Spider-Man in the Broadway show "Spider-Man: Turn Off the Dark".
Moreover, Buckley's mother Mary Guibert, who serves as executive producer for the project, also gave her approval for Carney. "We are over the moon that Reeve has agreed to take on this challenging role," Guibert said, before adding, "He's been getting ready for this all his life. Dueling biopics don’t come along that often, but we’ll be getting a few in the near future when Jake Scott goes up against Daniel Algrant and Penn Badgley with their respective biopics of singer Jeff Buckley. (There’s a third one in development, titled A Pure Drop, that Brendan Fletcher will direct, but we haven’t heard too much about it and it still seems early for that.) Scott‘s version has just landed its lead, with Deadline reporting that Spider-Man: Turn Off the Dark star Reeve Carney will play him in the currently-untitled film.
This take on the musician’s life has a big advantage over all the others: the rights to the music. To be fair to Algrant‘s version, Greetings from Tim Buckley, that “takes place at a tribute concert performed before Jeff Buckley generated his own solo songs,” which means that the music he...

Spider-Man Turn Off the Dark Broadway star Reeve Carney has nabbed the role of Jeff Buckley that A-listers were drooling over. Carney got the part over Twilight star Robert Pattinson and Rise of the Planet of the Apes star James Franco.
Jeff Buckley was a revered singer-songwriter whose life was cut short at the age of 30 when he drowned in the Wolf River in Memphis, Tennessee. He only released one album, but it contained his version of Hallelujah by Leonard Cohen, and is considered a modern classic.
Pattinson had lobbied hard for the job and was even endorsed by Buckley’s mother at one point. No stranger to music, Pattinson has contributed several songs on the soundtracks from The Twilight Saga. But, for Pattinson, the role of Buckley is not to be.

Looks like the battle of the Buckleys could be heating up. In June, it was announced that Penn Badgley would be taking on the role of the young Jeff Buckley in Greetings from Tim Buckley, and now director Jake Scott has found someone to play the man in his own, untitled biopic of Jb. Reeve Carney, last seen in The Tempest, is apparently the man for the job.The two films, of course, will focus on different times in Buckley’s life: Greetings is set early on in his career, while Scott’s film will follow more of his fame before his untimely death in a drowning accident at the age of 30.Scott also has an advantage in that he has the full backing of Buckley’s family and the exclusive rights to both his music and personal archives. The second Jeff Buckley biopic just found its leading man. (The first is Greetings From Tim Buckley, which has Penn Badgley and Imogen Poots starring, and will chronicle the late singer's early days, before he rose to minor fame.) This second one is currently untitled, and comes from [1] Jake Scott (Welcome to the Rileys). It now has Reeve Carney, who played Peter Parker and Spider-Man in the Broadway show Spider-Man: Turn Off the Dark, set to play Jeff Buckley. Deadline [2] has the announcement, without too many more details. But it seems like it might be a good announcement. Carney likely has the musical chops to actually play Buckley and really deliver the musical performance. Whether or not he'll be able to sell the whole arc of the story remains to be seen. But it's better than pulling someone directly out of reality-tv land to play a celebrated musical figure that...

There seems to be countless movie Snow Whites in the works (Kristen Stewart's, Lily Collins', China's, etc.). But there are only two movie projects about singer Jeff Buckley, who drowned at the age of 30 while swimming in Tennessee's Wolf River in 1997. One, Greetings from Tim Buckley, is set to star Gossip Girl's Penn Badgley as Jeff Buckley. The other, it has been announced, will star Broadway actor-singer Reeve Carney as Buckley. Carney, who played Prince Ferdinand in Helen Mirren's The Tempest and the young Ethan Hawke in Snow Falling on Cedars, is best known for his Broadway incarnation of Spider-Man in Spider-Man: Turn Off the Dark. To be directed by Jake Scott, son of Ridley Scott and best known for the Kristen Stewart-James Gandolfini drama Welcome to the Rileys, this as-yet untitled Jeff Buckley project is being executive produced by Buckley's mother, Mary Guibert.

Obviously so do a few filmmakers, as of right now there are two other Jeff Buckley biopics in the works. Greetings From Tim Buckley, which is being directed by Dan Algrant. This is the first film to go into production which starts a 4-week shoot Monday in Brooklyn. The other film is called A Pure Drop and it is being directed by Brendan Fletcher out of Australia. The film is based on A Pure Drop: The Life of Jeff Buckley.

When Jeff Buckley passed away in 1997 at age 30, the music world lost one of its most promising new artists. The one studio album released during his lifetime was hailed by critics as a modern classic and catapulted the singer-songwriter into the upper echelon of the indie world, where he remained until a tragic drowning incident in a Tennessee river. A posthumous release garnered a Grammy nom.
With so much acclaim and a sad fate, a feature film based on Buckley's life was probably inevitable, and now we have the name of the actor who will be filling the late musician's shoes: Reeve Carney. While he's not the biggest name in Hollywood, Carney has been making waves as the title character in Broadway's "Spider-Man: Turn Off the Dark." The show marked Carney's first foray into acting and professional singing; he had been discovered by director Julie Taymor through his rock band.

Over the weekend talk emerged that "Gossip Girl" and "The Stepfather" actor Penn Badgley had beaten out the likes of Robert Pattinson to play Jeff Buckley in the upcoming biopic about the late singer.
Badgley's reps quickly shot down the story, telling The Los Angeles Times that "Penn is not involved in the film at all".
Now the confusion has been cleared up - there are two Jeff Buckley movies in the works, only one of which involves Badgley. The first is being produced by Orian Williams and has the blessing of the Jeff Buckley estate.
Smuggler Films however is developing their own film, which has rights to music from the estate of Jeff's father Tim Buckley. That project has now issued a press release today confirming Badgley will star as Jeff Buckley in the project which is entitled "Greetings from Tim Buckley".

Penn Badgely has been cast as Jeff Buckley in a upcoming biopic based on the musical artist called Geetings From Tim Buckley. Buckley was a very talented musician and was a rising star, but he died at the age of 30 in 1997. It doesn't look like this is the same biopic that director Jake Scott (Welcome to the Riley's) was working on because this film was written by Dan Algrant, Emma Sheanshang and David Brendel and is being directed by Dan Algrant (People I Know, Naked in New York). So it looks like there are two Jeff Buckley biopics in the works.
This new biopic "follows the true story of the days leading up to Jeff Buckley’s eminent 1991 performance at his father’s tribute concert in St. Ann’s Church. Through a romance with a young woman working at the concert, he comes to understand the father who abandoned him.

‘Gossip Girl’ star Penn Badgley beats out Robert Pattinson and James Franco for the lead role in the much-desired Jeff Buckley biopic movie! A source tells all to HollywoodLife.com
Poor Robert Pattinson! The actor was working hard to score the role of Jeff Buckley, the famous musician who died young at age 30, in a biopic movie about his life. Gossip Girl star Penn Badgley snagged the part instead, a source exclusively tells HollywoodLife.com. “Robert Pattinson is devastated he’s lost out on the one role he really wanted,” says our insider. “It was down to Rob, James Franco and Penn for the part, and Rob was really pushing himself to get it.”
Our source continues, “Rob hasn’t heard ‘no’ a lot lately, so he’s really bummed. He was passionate about this project.” Things were looking good for Rob, who was reportedly “obsessed” with landing the lead.

And even more biopics! Welcome to the Rileys helmer, Jake Scott will be in charge for the upcoming biopic about musician Jeff Buckley. Hallelujah! Yeah, well, that’s probably best known Buckley’s song, so let’s get straight to the point.
Ryan Jaffe is responsible for the script and at this moment we do know that the film is scheduled to begin production in the fall. So, let’s hurry up with some facts.
Just in case you still have no idea who we’re talking about, here’s an explanation: “Jeff Buckley, a son of troubled folk musician Tim Buckley, grew up around music, and began working as a guitarist in the ’80s, but his career really began gathering steam in the ’90s, as he performed in smaller venues mostly around New York City. The tragically short career of rising star musician Jeff Buckley, probably still best known for his haunting and oft-used cover of Leonard Cohen’s Hallelujah, has long been a subject of fascination for filmmakers. Now Welcome to the Rileys director Jake Scott is planning a biopic of the man and his music.Buckley was the son of famous-yet-faulty folk star Tom Buckley and, despite being drowned by the wake of a boat when he jumped fully clothed into a river for a swim, has gone on to influence many musicians who followed him. He had an uneasy relationship with the fame his talent brought, preferring to play small venues and stay out of the spotlight.Scott can identify with at least one element of Buckley’s life, given that he’s the son of Ridley Scott, and has long been forging his own career in his father’s chosen field.

And the wonderful few weeks for musician biopics continues. Hot off Sam Cooke and Bobby Fuller inching closer, cult favorite Jeff Buckley, who also died young, is getting his own shot at big screen stardom. Director Jake Scott, probably best known for Welcome To The Rileys, will helm with Buckley.s own mother stepping in as executive producer. The still-untitled project will follow the singer.s life in some capacity, though it.s unclear whether Scott.s work will also tackle Jeff.s famous father Tim. He too died young, and a comprehensive biography of the two men written by David Browne has been optioned to help retool a script written by Ryan Jaffe. Unlike most rock stars who perished early, Jeff Buckley died not from drugs or alcohol but from jumping in the water to take a swim on a seemingly calm day. His one completed album, Grace, eventually...

Jake Scott the director of the indie film Welcome to the Riley's is attached to direct a feature film biopic that revolves around musician Jeff Buckley. Buckley was a very talented musician and was a rising star, but he died at the age of 30 in 1997.
Buckley was the son of folk musician Tim Buckley. He spent a decade as a guitarist-for-hire in Los Angeles, but eventually gained a following in the early 1990s by playing cover songs at venues in Manhattan's East Village, such as Sin-é, gradually focusing more on his own material. After rebuffing much interest from record labels and his father's manager Herb Cohen, he signed with Columbia, recruited a band, and recorded what would be his only studio album, Grace. He was a big influence on musicians such as Kurt Cobain and Coldplay.

Last Wednesday, I threw on Jeff Buckley - Live in Chicago and got to work. One of the times I glanced at the TV screen, a thought occurred to me: Robert Pattinson could pull off a decent Jeff Buckley. He's only a few years younger than the musician was during the creation of Grace; he's a got a slew of musical talents; and has a similar look. Heck, I even tweeted about it. Only a few days later, in a turn that taps into my collective conscience/coincidence question, there's a mass of buzz about a Buckley biopic.
ABC News reports that Pattinson and James Franco are in a showdown to play the musician in the upcoming biopic. There's not much beef to this account, and they get it wrong that "Hallelujah" was released posthumously (it was on Grace), so it doesn't seem definitive. However, an older news release down under explains things in detail.
