- In December 2007, he came out with the Mitchell Report, an investigation into the use of performance-enhancing drugs in Major League Baseball. Among the players named in the report were Roger Clemens, Andy Pettitte, Chuck Knoblauch, Todd Pratt and David Justice.
- When Mitchell left the Senate in 1995, then President Bill Clinton named him special envoy to Northern Ireland where, over a period of three years, he presided over the Northern Ireland peace process that ultimately produced the Good Friday Agreement that was signed by the British and Irish governments.
