Singles tennis is unlike any other sport. There’s no team to support a player when they’re down, no coach to pep talk between sets, no distractions to pull the spectator's eyes away from the two individuals standing on opposite sides of the net. Tennis is much more than a game — it’s a sometimes three, four or five hour relationship between two people trying to anticipate each other’s next moves. To excel at singles tennis, a player has to be an expert at reading their opponent’s strengths and weaknesses right off the bat and use them to adjust their own game. All of this complexity is exactly what director Luca Guadagnino portrayed in his box office hit, ‘Challengers,’ starring Zendaya, Josh O’Connor and Mike Faist. ‘Challengers,’ of course, had commercial appeal with Zendaya leading, a name that’s become synonymous with striking beauty, versatility and commitment...

Tennis star Naomi Osaka offered her response to Luca Guadagnino’s buzzy tennis movie Challengers on Thursday, sharing her own moves on the court set to the movie’s viral techno score.
On TikTok, Osaka posted a video of herself moving through a tennis serve and twirling her racket with her fingers after writing, “Me after watching Challengers.”
Though the tennis player has no official ties to the hit movie, which stars Zendaya embroiled in a love triangle with Josh O’Connor and Mike Faist, screenwriter Justin Kuritzkes previously told Business Insider it was Osaka’s 2018 win over Serena Williams that partially inspired the film.

Josh O’Connor would very much love to fuck off into the woods with a stick.
It’s a deceptively warm April day in New York City and O’Connor, who looks brighter than anyone who was awake before the sun has a right to look, is hunched over conspiratorially to share what music he’s currently listening to. It’s where he got the idea of fucking off — central lyrics to Irish blues singer Mick Flannery’s “Fuck Off World”: “Fuck off world/Fuck off politics/I’m going...

Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross have, in less than 15 years, established themselves as the most exciting composers working in contemporary film.
Their first score was David Fincher’s masterpiece “The Social Network.” The score was a haunting, atmospheric triumph, and it won them Oscars, an even more impressive feat given the Academy’s historic anti-rock band bias. And what began as an exclusive collaboration with Fincher soon blossomed outward – they have worked with Pixar and Ken Burns, scored a prestige TV version of Alan Moore’s “Watchmen,” and an animated “Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles” movie. They can do it all, while remaining uniquely them.
They are unstoppable, too. This week “Challengers,” from Luca Guadagnino, is released alongside their soundtrack album. And they have a pair of scores still coming this year – for the big-budget Apple movie “The Gorge” and for Guadagnino’s “Queer,” starring Daniel Craig.

When determining what films have any chance of winning the Oscar for Best Picture, or even being in contention for it, there recently has been a returned focus toward the delicate balance of art and commerce. As theatrical exhibition continues to rebuild and reform in wake of the global pandemic, the last two Best Picture winners, “Everything Everywhere All at Once” and “Oppenheimer,” were celebrated not just for being inventive, but for proving that audiences were still willing to come out in droves for a film without a colon or numeral toward the end of the title.
All that to say, if “Challengers” does well during its opening weekend at the box office, which is not a given, it will be much harder to ignore during awards season. As of now, there’s simply not much else down the line on the 2024 release calendar that fits into that sweet spot...

If there ever was a based-on-a-true-story movie that called for a sequel, it’s “The Social Network,” director David Fincher and screenwriter Aaron Sorkin’s 2010 classic about the founding of Facebook. The early years covered in the film were just the beginning of the Mark Zuckerberg story before Facebook (now Meta) became one of the most powerful companies on the planet, capable of shaping the future of democracy for the worse.
So it’s no wonder that Sorkin is working on a sort of sequel to “The Social Network.”
During an interview on the showbiz news podcast “The Town,” Sorkin was asked how he thinks Facebook and social media, in general, have impacted democracy in the 14 years since “The Social Network” came out.
After exchanging a look with his publicist, Sorkin told host Matthew Belloni and guest co-host Peter Hamby that he’s planning to write a movie about this topic.

Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross have released their original score for Luca Guadagnino’s film Challengers.
The score arrives two weeks after Reznor and Ross released Challengers [Mixed], which saw DJ and producer Boys Noize their original compositions from the film and remix them into one continuous, club-ready set. Now, coinciding with the release of Challengers, Reznor and Ross have shared the original score in full.
Starring Zendaya, Josh O’Connor, and Mike Faist, Challengers takes place in the dramatic arena of competitive tennis, and features a love-and-sporting triangle between the three leads. At the center of the film is Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross’ buzzing, techno-forward score; in her review of the film, Senior Entertainment Editor Liz Shannon Miller lauded their compositions, describing the score as “bringing a level of bombast to the sports action that at times threatens to overwhelm the action, without ever actually proving distracting.”

It’s only fitting that on the day the score drops for Challengers, composed by Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross, Thom Yorke’s first score since Luca Guadagnino’s Suspiria would arrive. Originally set to release last September but being delayed due to the strikes, Luca Guadagnino’s tennis flick Challengers has finally hit the big screen to much excitement and anticipation. The story follows Tashi, a tennis player turned coach who has transformed her husband Art into a world-famous Grand Slam champion. In an attempt to boost his confidence and break his losing streak, she signs him for a ‘Challenger’ event, a lower-level pro tournament, where he finds himself standing across the net from his former best friend and Tashi’s former boyfriend. With magnetic performances from the leads, expert cinematography, an engaging dual timeline and a heart-pounding original score, Challengers is a slam dunk worth waiting for.
The story of Challengers is incredibly effective, which is a testament to how it is told. Utilizing a dual timeline perspective to fill us in on the rocky relationship between the three leads...

While some may contest whether his new film – Challengers – is, in fact, director Luca Guadagnino’s best film, it is undeniable that this is, simply put, a great film.
In Challengers stars Zendaya as a former tennis prodigy named Tashi Duncan who, after a brutal injury ends her career, turns to coaching and while serving as such for her husband – Art Donaldson (Mike Faist), himself a tennis champion, though currently besought by a losing streak – orchestrates a final confrontation between Art and his former friend and rival for Tashi’s affections, Patrick Zweig (Josh O’Connor). As the two old friends face each other in the most important match of their lives, their troubled relationship plays out as flashbacks between sets.
Director Luca Guadagnino – perhaps previously best known Suspiria (2019) and Call Me by Your Name (2017) – proves a formidable directorial force with his command of the material here. There is never a...

The Academy’s Board of Governors has approved the new awards rules and campaign regulations for the 97th Oscars ceremony to be held on March 2.
Significant changes have been made in the original score category. Now, up to three composers can receive individual Oscar statuettes if they all significantly contribute to a film’s music. This marks a departure from previous rules that required composers to submit as a group, such as the band Son Lux for the nomination for the best picture winner “Everything Everywhere All at Once.” Jon Batiste, Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross, winners for the animated film “Soul” (2020), also received a single statuette. The definition of a group has been specified to include a recognized band. Additionally, the shortlist in this category has been expanded from 15 to 20 titles, which will be announced in late December before the official nomination voting period begins in January.

Amazon MGM Studios has released the final trailer for Challengers, starring Zendaya as Tashi Duncan, a former tennis prodigy turned coach and a force of nature who makes no apologies for her game on and off the court.
Married to a champion on a losing streak, Tashi’s strategy for her husband’s redemption takes a surprising turn when he must face off against the washed-up Patrick—his former best friend and Tashi’s former boyfriend.
As their pasts and present collide and tensions run high, Tashi must ask herself what it will cost to win. In addition to the trailer, you can also watch a featurette on the film’s music by Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross.
From visionary filmmaker Luca Guadagnino, Challengers is rated R for language throughout, some sexual content, and graphic nudity. The drama will open in theaters on Friday, April 26, 2024.
Guadagnino directed the movie from a script by Justin Kuritzkes.

In the article series Sound and Vision we take a look at music videos from notable directors. This week we take a look at several music videos by Luca Guadagnino. Luca Guadagnino's films are vibrant and lush, pulsating with life and a heartbeat, like music. He is often one to curate his soundtracks carefully, with the likes of The Rolling Stones, Harry Nilsson, Captain Beefheart, Sufjan Stevens, Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross, Thom Yorke and John Adams showing up on his soundtracks. Sometimes he chooses pre-existing tracks, but more often he asks his favorite artists to provide the sonic backdrop for his films. It is fitting that a few of the music videos Guadagnino directed are for tracks tailor made for his own features, starting...

Before teaming up with director Luca Guadagnino on Challengers, Zendaya sought advice from Dune co-star Timothée Chalamet, who starred in Guadagnino’s Call Me By Your Name in 2017.
“He said wonderful things,” Zendaya told The Hollywood Reporter at the Los Angeles premiere of Challengers on Tuesday. “Luca is brilliant and I’ve wanted to work with Luca for a very long time and this just seemed like the absolute perfect thing. When we first met about the script he had such a keen, deep understanding of the characters from the beginning and a clearer idea of the kind of movie he wanted to create. And the script was brilliant, [writer] Justin Kuritzkes is so talented and I’m so happy for him. So it all made sense.”

Oscar-winning Nine Inch Nails duo Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross have taken on the challenge of making the “Challengers” score an unprecedented mix.
Aptly-titled “Challengers [Mixed],” the Sony Music release from Reznor and Ross includes nine tracks from the upcoming film’s electronic score, with each deconstructed and subsequently reimagined into a continuous mix by DJ and producer Boys Noize, who was hand-selected by the duo for the project. You can listen to it right here or stream it below.
“Challengers” marks Reznor and Ross’ second collaboration with auteur Luca Guadagnino following “Bones and All.” The feature, out in theaters in two weeks, follows the love triangle between tennis stars played by Zendaya, Josh O’Connor, and Mike Faist.
Director Guadagnino, despite not penning the “Challengers” script (instead that was written by frequent collaborator Justin Kuritzkes) did actually write lyrics to track “Compress/Repress,” as included in the Sony Music mix.

Luca Guadagnino’s Challengers opens in an intentionally disorienting manner: We are in New Rochelle, New York for a tennis challenger. Wearing cheap shorts that resemble boxers, Patrick Zweig (Josh O’Connor) battles Art Donaldson (Mike Faist), clad in head-to-toe Uniqlo, while the glamorous Tashi Donaldson (Zendaya) watches tensely from the stands. Flashbacks, first from a few days prior, and then way back to 13 years ago, slowly fill in the gaps on how these two former best friends ended up in such a position: playing against one another in a mid-tier tennis challenger comically sponsored by a tire brand.
Even as Challengers zips back and forth in time with boundless energy, the narrative, to Guadagnino and screenwriter Justin Kuritzkes’ credit, is never hard to follow. Sometimes the foreknowledge afforded by time jumps end up sacrificing drama, but in Challengers this sacrifice makes space for us to feel the burden of these broken relationships.

“Are we talking about tennis?” asks Patrick Zweig (Josh O’Connor) in a mid-aughts flashback as chugging, four-on-the-floor beats kick in to accompany an argument between him and his sure-to-turn-pro girlfriend, Tashi Duncan (Zendaya). It’s one of several instances in director Luca Guadagnino’s sexy, swaggering sports drama Challengers where the characters make subtext into text. “We’re always talking about tennis,” she responds, but in Justin Kuritzkes’s screenplay, tennis isn’t just tennis—it’s sex, it’s power, it’s self-determination, or, as Tashi herself puts it at one point, “it’s a relationship.” What do we talk about when we talk about tennis? In Challengers at least, it’s absolutely everything else.
Challengers frames its drama against a 2019 Atp event where the sport’s biggest star, 33-year-old Art Donaldson (Mike Faist), is competing to regain some confidence after a professional rough patch on his way to a Grand Slam.

Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross have unveiled their latest film score. Today, the duo released Challengers [Mixed] by Boys Noize, the score for Luca Guadagnino’s upcoming film remixed as a contentious DJ set by Boys Noize.
Spanning 28 minutes, Challengers [Mixed] sees Boys Noize reimagine the nine songs Reznor and Ross made for the score, adding additional production and leaning into its synth-driven, electronic feel. The duo “hand-selected” Boys Noize for the project.
“It’s been a fun challenge to turn this into one fluid experience and take it even further by redesigning the tracks, creating new elements and changing certain parts,” Boys Noize said in a statement. “Especially on ‘Compress / Repress,’ which turns super epic in the end. Working with Trent and Atticus has been a dream come true; they’ve been so great and helpful during the entire process.” Stream the album below.

While their Nin career is legendary, it’s almost hard to imagine a time when Nine Inch Nails frontman Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross weren’t scoring movies; their work is now so indelible. As rock musicians turned dedicated composers, they already earned themselves two Oscar awards for films as varied as David Fincher‘s “The Social Network” and Disney’s “Soul” (alongside Jon Batiste).

Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross have revealed a number of exciting new projects in the works, including a new Nine Inch Nails album, a music festival, and their own production company.
The duo spoke to Zach Baron for GQ’s annual Creativity Issue. While much of the interview covers the backstory of Reznor and Ross’ friendship and creative partnership, there are also a few anecdotes about what’s next. Notably, after spending the last several years scoring films, Reznor and Ross seem ready to make a new Nine Inch Nails album.
“I think coming out of a stretch of a number of films in a row, I want some time of seeing where the wind blows versus: There’s a looming date on a calendar coming up and we better get our shit together,” Reznor explained. “And certainly in the last few weeks I’ve been itching to do what we often do,...

Since its premiere on February 27, FX on Hulu’s “Shōgun” has become one of the most popular limited series of this Emmy cycle. Based on James Clavell’s 1975 titular novel, the historical series created by Rachel Kondo and Justin Marks revolves around an English sailor (Cosmo Jarvis) shipwrecked in Japan at the start of the 17th century in the midst of political upheaval surrounding a powerful daimyō (Hiroyuki Sanada) and a samurai (Anna Sawai) torn between her loyalty and faith. With the series already midway through its run and receiving critical acclaim and awards attention, let’s re-examine NBC’s original 1980 miniseries — which garnered 14 Emmy nominations and three wins –- to determine potential categories for the current program.

Who could've imagined "Community" launching the careers of so many big-name artists? From the Russo Brothers to Donald Glover and Alison Brie, Dan Harmon's cult-favorite comedy series was a breeding ground for then-budding talents, perhaps none more so than composer Ludwig Göransson. Over the last 15 years, Göransson has cemented himself as one of the best music-making millennials in the business, along the way picking up an Oscar for the sick Afrofuturistic beats of his "Black Panther" soundtrack (although his Oscar-nominated score for "Black Panther: Wakanda Forever" was just as impressive). He's now landed a well-deserved second Academy Award for his electrifying work on "Oppenheimer," placing him in some reputable company when it comes to the Oscars.
Specifically, this gives Göransson just as many Oscars as Hans Zimmer. It's actually kind of mind-boggling that the legendary composer doesn't have more than that, considering just how many iconic movie scores he's...

Trent Reznor has shared his reflections on the 30th anniversary of Nine Inch Nails’ breakout album, The Downward Spiral, in a post on the band’s official website describing how the seminal project still impacts him.
“Spending too much time looking backwards feels dangerous to me, but this day on the calendar caught my attention,” Reznor wrote in the message. ” Has it really been that long, old friend? I just spent an hour listening to this time capsule of what 28 year old me had to say, and it still excites me and breaks my heart.”
The Nin mastermind concluded the note by encouraging fans to “be kind to yourselves,” adding that he hopes to “see you soon.”
In further celebration of the album’s 30th anniversary, Heavy Consequence spoke with Godsmack singer Sully Erna, Code Orange vocalist Jami Morgan, and Parkway Drive frontman Winston McCall. Watch the video below.

After having conquered first love, witches and cannibalism, Luca Guadagnino turns his attention to tennis and threesomes in Challengers. Here’s the new trailer.
Name a director with a more varied range of films than Luca Guadagnino. The Italian master of sensuality has directed Timothee Chalamet to an Oscar nomination in Call Me By Your Name, exploded plenty of heads in Suspiria and combined romance and cannibalism in Bones And All. And that’s only his last three films.
Guadagnino’s next project is Challengers. Starring Zendaya, Josh O’Connor and Mike Faist, the drama is set in the competitive world of tennis.
Take a look at the second Challengers trailer.
Any film that uses Nelly Furtado’s ‘Maneater’ in the trailer shoots right to the top of my most anticipated films list.

As Zendaya walks the red carpet at Dune Part 2 with an outfit that resembles the Metropolis robot as a dominatrix, you can catch her in the trailer for the newest drama from Amazon MGM Studios, Challengers. The trailer reels you in with the dynamic of Zendaya’s tennis pro taking on two male protégés as they, too, embark on their professional tennis careers. Things get hot and heavy (then complicated) when Zendaya’s character entangles herself with both men. MGM has released the new trailer with a few new images that, interestingly, all involve a side two-shot of characters in conversation.

The Oscar-frontrunning Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse” was the big winner at Asifa-Hollywood’s 51st Annie Awards (held February 17 at UCLA’s Royce Hall), grabbing seven awards, topped by best animated feature. As a 66 percent Oscar predictor, the Annie win bodes well for Sony and producers Phil Lord and Chris Miller.
The other “Spider-Verse” awards were for FX, character design, direction, music, production design, and editorial.
The Oscar-nominated dark horse, “Robot Dreams” (Neon), from Pablo Berger, won best independent feature, and “War Is Over! Inspired by the Music of John & Yoko” (ElectroLeague) took best short. The prestige short got a boost in its race for the Oscar. It’s directed by Pixar alum Dave Mullins and executive produced by Sean Ono Lennon, in partnership with Peter Jackson and his Wētā FX Limited animation team.
Hayao Miyazaki’s summary film, “The Boy and the Heron“ (Studio Ghibli-GKids), won two Annies for Takeshi Honda...
