As the new year kicks off, we’re getting a fresh cinematic universe based on DC characters – the Dcu. The Dceu wrapped up with ‘Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom’ doing okay, but let’s be honest, most of its movies didn’t do great. That’s why Gunn and Safran were brought in to lead the new Dcu, promising lots of new projects. Among these, ‘Superman’ is getting the most buzz, setting the stage for the Dcu even though ‘Creature Commandos’ will come out first.
After a lot of guessing and planning, Gunn happily shared that filming for ‘Superman’ started on February 29th, which just so happens to be Superman’s birthday. When asked about what inspired Superman’s new suit, which we’ve had a quick look at, Gunn pointed to Alex Ross, a famous comic book writer and artist, as his main inspiration.

With the start of the new year, we can look forward to the start of a new cinematic universe based on DC characters – Dcu. And while Dceu ended its run with a somewhat successful ‘Aquman and the Lost Kingdom, ‘ the fact still remains that the majority of the movies have flopped. This is why Gunn and Safran were called in to take over the reins of the newly rebooted Dcu, and they have plenty of projects on their release calendar, but none is as talked about as ‘Superman,’ a true beginning of Dcu despite the fact that ‘Creature commandos’ are releasing first.
Now after months of speculation and planning, Gunn was overjoyed to announce that ‘Superman’ has begun principal photography on February 29th which is, coincidentally, Superman’s birthday. Gunn was also asked on the same thread regarding the inspiration for Superman’s suit which we’ve gotten a sneak...

DC and Marvel have given the world some of the greatest characters in pop culture: Spider-Man, Batman, Superman, and D-Man. So if the two companies were to put their heads together and come up with a character that they could share, that character would be the greatest comic creation of all time, right?
Well, if that’s what you think, then let me introduce you to Axel Asher, aka Access. And let me tell you right from the beginning, that he is not the greatest comic creation of all time.
A History of Crossovers
Before going too far into the history of the greatest comic find of his generation, we have to put the distinction between the big two into their proper context. Long before Snyder bros blasted the MCU for making unserious movies about people in colorful tights, long before Marvel Zombies knocked DC for dealing in boring gods,...

“I’m gonna kill Aquaman and everything he holds dear,” promises Black Manta in the trailer for Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom. “I’m gonna murder his family and burn his kingdom to ash.”
Such boasts are par for the course among supervillains like Black Manta (Yahya Abdul-Mateen II), and most people watching the trailer dismiss it as usual bad guy bluster. After all, the first Aquaman movie earned over $1 billion in 2018 because of its lighthearted tone. Director James Wan and writers David Leslie Johnson-McGoldrick and Will Beall, working off a story they wrote with Wan and comics scribe Geoff Johns, crafted a fun script that took advantage of Aquaman’s role in the popular imagination and star Jason Momoa‘s undeniable charisma. The movie had plenty of genuinely cool sequences, such as an epic undersea battle and a duel between Aquaman Arthur Curry and his half-brother Orm the Ocean...

It’s August 2023, and at this moment, the Marvel Cinematic Universe already released three projects this year, and there are three more to go. The franchise’s Phase 5 opened up with ‘Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania,’ in February, and since then, we also watched ‘Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3’ in theaters (now streaming on Disney+) and the ‘Secret Invasion’ series on Disney+.
While the third and final installment of the ‘Guardians of the Galaxy’ trilogy received acclaim from fans, ‘Quantumania’ and ‘Secret Invasion’ weren’t that fortunate, and it only remains to be seen how will the rest of this year’s MCU projects, ‘The Marvels,’ ‘Loki’ Season 2, and ‘Echo’ will do. But also, some fans are already looking forward to 2024, although that release schedule is currently on thin glass due to the ongoing strikes in Hollywood.

Finally giving us a payoff to both the original ending of Army of Darkness and the series finale of “Ash vs. Evil Dead,” Ash is headed into the future in Army of Darkness: Forever.
Announced by Aipt Comics this afternoon, Army of Darkness: Forever is an upcoming comic series from Dynamite Entertainment, and it takes place across three timelines.
“Dynamite is proud to present a new series from Tony Fleecs (Stray Dogs) and Justin Greenwood (Stumptown) that is a direct sequel to how many fans believe the film should’ve ended. This October, Army of Darkness Forever #1 begins to explore what could’ve been.”
Dynamite previews via an official press release today, “The story picks up immediately after the events of the beloved film, jumping between three fun timelines. The Techno Army of Darkness of 2093, the S-Mart aisles of 1993, and the middle ages chaos of Castle Kandar, all three get the spotlight in this series.

Could Iron Man cross paths with Batman? Might Spider-Man trade quips with The Flash? Perhaps Thanos and Darkseid could have a chat about the Anti-Life Equation over tea and cucumber sandwiches? It’s hard to imagine the two biggest comic-book franchises joining forces on the big screen, but a Marvel DC crossover isn’t completely out of the realm of possibility now that James Gunn has taken over DC Studios.
While speaking with Empire, James Gunn spoke about a possible Marvel DC crossover. “I’m certain that’s more likely now that I’m in charge [at DC],” Gunn said. “Who knows?” Before you start getting too excited, nothing has been seriously discussed, and Gunn said that the DC Universe needs to establish itself before they consider any type of crossover event. “That’s many years away, though,” Gunn said. “I think we have to establish what we’re doing [at DC] first. Kurt Busiek's Vertigo comic book title "Astro City" (1995), continues in development as a TV series pilot, adapted by Busiek for Freemantle Media and producer Gregory Noveck ("Batman: Under the Red Hood"):
"..."Astro City" focuses on different groups and characters, often taking the viewpoint of minor characters watching events unfold...
"...through their emotional and personal lives, in a universe of superheroes and villains.
"A backstory, goes back to the 19th century, showcasing superheroes the 'Old Soldier' and 'Ironhorse, the Human Locomotive'...
"...as well as back to pre-history including 'Coyotl' from pre-Columbian America.
"It's a thrill to be working with Freemantle Media on this," said Busiek.

Kang has arrived.
At Comic-Con 2022, Marvel Studios’ Kevin Feige made official what many fans had been theorizing for some time: Kang the Conqueror is the MCU’s next Thanos-like villain. The character was kind of introduced in the Disney+ series “Loki” – we say “kind of” because the version of the character in that show was actually a variant of Kang, but not Kang himself.
Regardless, Jonathan Majors is stepping into the shoes of Josh Brolin and will be causing all kinds of havoc for our favorite Marvel Cinematic Universe heroes, as evidenced by the title of “Avengers 5” – “Avengers: The Kang Dynasty.” His first official appearance is in “Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania.”
But who is Kang, how does he fit into the MCU, and what exactly is the Kang Dynasty? All your questions answered below.

Screenwriter Jeff Loveness, who most recently wrote “Ant-Man and Wasp: Quantumania,” will write the script for the fifth Avengers film, “Avengers: The Kang Dynasty,” according to an individual with knowledge of the project.
“Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings” filmmaker Destin Daniel Cretton is attached to direct. Marvel Studios Chief Kevin Feige is producing.
Loveness broke out as one of the writers on the animated series “Rick and Morty,” and before that was a writer on “Jimmy Kimmel Live!” Loveness is the latest “Rick and Morty” alum to join the MCU — writer Michael Waldron penned “Loki” and “Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness” and Emmy-winning “Pickle Rick” episode writer Jessica Gao is the head writer on “She-Hulk.”

New horror flick Barbarian wins the weekend box office, which was one of the worst weekends of the year thus far.
“The late summer/early fall box office woes continue. Though the new releases opened well on their own terms in this post Labor Day weekend, they weren’t enough to keep this from becoming the year’s second worst grossing weekend. With an overall box office of 40.3 million, it comes in only ahead of the 34.9 million weekend of January 28-30, which didn’t have a single new wide release. If there’s a positive spin to put on the weekend, it’s that the newcomers overperformed slightly and the weekend fell less than expected, ‘only’ dropping 28 despite larger than usual drops on the holdovers thanks to inflated grosses last weekend with the National Cinema Day 3 ticket promotion last Saturday. One of the most mysterious items in Marvel’s Phase 5 film slate has been “Thunderbolts,” a movie that is set to follow a new team of villains who are recruited to go on a dangerous mission for the government. Little has been known about the project, which hails from director Jake Schierer and screenwriters Kurt Busiek and Eric Pearson, other than its 2024 release date and “Suicide Squad”-like premise.
That all changed in a big way at D23 Expo on Saturday.

Marvel’s bad guys and anti-heroes are getting the closeup in Thunderbolts, which revealed its cast at D23 Saturday.

Stan and Harbour in particular got a huge reaction in the auditorium, while Pugh — who is filming the Dune sequel overseas — sent a video to greet the audience.

Marvel has unveiled the cast of its upcoming “Thunderbolts” movie, and it’s exactly who we expected (and we’re not complaining).
The Marvel Cinematic Universe’s version of the Suicide Squad — don’t hate, we’re just describing facts here — will be staffed by Yelena Belova (Florence Pugh), Bucky Barnes (Sebastian Stan), Red Guardian (David Harbour), Taskmaster (Olga Kurylenko), U.S. Agent (Wyatt Russell) and Ghost (Hannah John-Kamen).
And to top it off, as suggested by her machinations in “Black Widow” and “Falcon and the Winter Soldier,” Valentina Allegra de Fontaine (Julia Louis-Dreyfus) is around, likely as the team’s handler. Which makes sense. You wouldn’t keep having her show up like Samuel L. Jackson used to do unless she’s gonna be the new Nick Fury.

We're 29 movies into the Marvel Cinematic Universe, and we are bursting at the seams when it comes to superheroes. So why not shake things up by putting villains front and center? Since it worked so well for "Loki," Marvel Studios has decided to bring some baddies to the big screen with "Thunderbolts." This comic obviously doesn’t really exist. There is no Amazing Fantasy #1000, it exists only in the heads of the Marvel marketing department. Spider-Man’s 60th anniversary, however, does exist, and he’s one of a handful of characters that forced his way into mainstream pop culture many years before Marvel became the pop culture juggernaut it now is. Peter Parker is, of course, all of us when we were teenage kids. Socially awkward, tough home life, constantly short of money…take your pick, there’s something in there that everyone could relate to. The fact he gained his powers also made every kid reading think, hey, if it happened to him, it could happen to me.
Peter Parker has also had a massive influence on a lot of professionals now working in the industry, as this anniversary issue shows.

No matter how popular Iron Man and Black Panther were, the MCU really came together for most casual viewers when the primary villain took center stage. After years of cameos and hints, Thanos the Mad Titan fully emerged in Avengers: Infinity War, giving the previous decade of movies renewed focus and purpose.
Although we know that Jonathan Majors’s Kang the Conqueror will be the overall bad guy in Marvel’s Phases 4 through 6, aka The Multiverse Saga, he’s very much in the nascent stages. Marvel Studios finally pulled back the curtain on what’s next in the MCU at Comic-Con, announcing that the next “Avengers” sequels — technically “Avengers 5” and “Avengers 6” — will be called “Avengers: The Kang Dynasty” and “Avengers: Secret Wars.” This is the next Thanos-level event facing the characters in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, and it can’t come soon enough.
Ever since “Avengers: Endgame” put a definitive button on the first three phases of the MCU, the output has been uncharacteristically disconnected, with disparate stories being told in both film and TV (on Disney+) that take place in the same universe, but lack the looming threat of Thanos that hung over the characters after 2012’s “The Avengers.”
That changes with “Secret Wars,” which will be preceded by “The Kang Dynasty.” But what is “Secret Wars” and what makes it worthy of a being an Avengers movie? All your questions answered below.

Marvel really wants people who’ve complained about the apparent lack of direction or focus in Phase 4 of the Marvel Cinematic Universe to know there is, in fact, a plan — and yes, the Avengers will be re-assembled.
As part of the blitzkrieg of news Saturday during Marvel Studio’s Hall H panel at San Diego Comic-Con 2022, Kevin Feige announced the titles of “Avengers 4” and “Avengers 5”: “Avengers: The Kang Dynasty” followed by “Avengers: Secret Wars.”
It’s part of what Marvel is now calling the “Multiverse Saga,” which retroactively kicked off with “Loki,” “Spider-Man: No Way Home” and “Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness.”
For those of you who don’t know, “Secret Wars” gets its name from Marvel’s groundbreaking miniseries “Marvel Super Heroes: Secret Wars.” It ran from May, 1984 to April, 1985, and happens to be the first company-wide crossover event in comics history.

Marvel’s next big team of heroes (or are they villains?) are gearing up to make their debuts. Out of Marvel Studio’s jam-packed panel at San Diego Comic-Con, studio president Keven Feige revealed that a “Thunderbolts” film will close the MCU’s Phase 5, with a release date set for July 26, 2024.
News of a “Thunderbolts” movie being in development first broke last month, with Jake Schreier, who previously helmed 2012’s “Robot and Frank” and 2015’s “Paper Towns” on board. Eric Pearson, who penned Marvel’s “Black Widow,” is attached to write the script, with Feige producing.

Created by writer Kurt Busiek and artist Mark Bagley, the Thunderbolts made their comic debut in a 1997 issue of “The Incredible Hulk,” before being launched into their self-titled own comic book later that year.

Kurt Busiek's superhero comic book series (1995) will be developed as a TV series pilot, adapted by Busiek for Freemantle Media and producer Gregory Noveck ("Batman: Under the Red Hood"):
"..."Astro City" focuses on different groups and characters...
"...often taking the viewpoint of minor characters watching events unfold through their emotional and personal lives, in a universe of superheroes and villains.

One is your friendly neighborhood wall-crawler, a kid from Queens trying to juggle his life and his duty to help others. The other is the grand protector of our dimension, fighting mystical threats from throughout the multiverse. They may not sound like they complement each other on paper but, believe it or not, Spider-Man and Doctor Strange work really well together.
It’s actually fairly common to see the two of them working together–their paths cross pretty frequently on the streets of New York, and Spidey is the type to always (inadvertently or not) stick his nose in other heroes’ business. And with them showing up on the big screen together in Spider-Man: No Way Home, we figured it was worth looking back at some of their best comic book team ups.
Spider-Man: One More Day (2007)
Spidey and Strange’s most controversial pairing is also probably the biggest influence on No Way Home.

I want to open this week by reporting on the recent success of my Hero Initiative Auction on eBay. First off I want to thank the four buyers who made it possible to make a £20 donation and from a personal point of view they all left positive reviews to add to my growing seller status. As it averaged out I sold one item for every week the auction ran. While I did have plenty of interest in other listings the buyers pulling the trigger just weren’t there. I feel the auction is something I will revisit yearly. After this years mild success I would have more confidence to start listings lower, especially if they are going to pick up viewers. They may be more inclined to bid with lower starting prices. I think my obvious thought was to start slightly higher so as to make as big a donation as possible.

This article contains spoilers for Black Widow, The Falcon and the Winter Soldier, and potential spoilers for the MCU in general.
The first phase of the Marvel Cinematic Universe had a simple mission: build up to the creation of the Avengers. The next two phases went further by setting the stage for Thanos and his quest for the Infinity Stones, culminating in one of the biggest movies of all time in Avengers: Endgame. While MCU Phase 4 is a mix of Disney+ TV shows and theatrical movie releases, there hasn’t been an established narrative goal just yet. So what are they building towards?
One belief is that we’re getting an MCU incarnation of the Thunderbolts or its sister team, the Dark Avengers.
The Thunderbolts first showed up in 1997, created by Kurt Busiek. In the aftermath of the Onslaught event, the Fantastic Four and Avengers were seemingly vaporized. Not only...

This article contains Loki spoilers.
With its second episode, Loki’s meta-narrative became a bit clearer, as did its title character’s goal. Tom Hiddleston’s Loki wants to change his story, and to do that, he needs to either trick or force the Time-Keepers into allowing that to happen. So we see him start to wheedle Owen Wilson’s Agent Mobius about getting face time with the bosses, and we see Mobius blow him off.
But we also see Mobius trying to score a meeting with the Time-Keepers, and Ravonna gives him a similar brush off. And that, more than Loki getting negged to death by Mobius, was what set the internet speculation machine a’runnin.
Why be sketchy with Mobius? What do the Time-Keepers have to hide? What’s really going on with the Tva?
And the biggest one of all: do the Time-Keepers even exist?

This past weekend we lost a well loved and well-respected member of the comics community. John Paul Leon has pulled his chair up to the great drawing board in the sky. Taken way too young at the age of 49 after a battle with cancer. As always with these memoriam pieces I do the out pouring of fellow pros on who knew John and bigger fans of his work can say things about him a million times better than me on social media. I can confess to not knowing a great deal of his career but I can tell he was a very talented guy, who was had a huge fan base and respect from his peers. As always in times like this the comics community shows its true colours on social media and it gives people like me a better understanding of the person and you do feel the lose...

Back in the Spring the first issue of this book slipped out, though I don’t think its launch got quite the reception Marvel was expecting. I think it did Ok, but wasn’t a game changer as such. The book was two things. One, the start of a semi-regular companion book to the series of Marvels: Snapshots one-shots, all of which have been excellent by the way. Two, the chance for Alex Ross to finally set out his original idea that in the past had ended up as the groundbreaking Marvels book. Alex originally had wanted to publish an anthology book set in the Marvel Universe, allowing all sorts of creators to write and draw stories with whatever characters and eras they fancied. Variations on that theme have appeared in the thirty years since Marvels came out (Thirty years!

Us old fan boys do tend to do a lot of moaning about some of the comics put out these days,, but now and again a little nugget is thrown up that seemingly all fans, young and old, can enjoy. I’ve been so excited waiting for the Marvels Snapshots launch. The original Marvels series, by Kurt Busiek and Alex Ross, enjoys something of a well deserved legendary status these days, and took the simple idea of using a normal person to document the Marvel Universe. That time round it was a photographer, Phil Sheldon, witness to some of the iconic moments in Marvel history. Marvels: Eye of the Camera followed a few years later, not as good but still a fun return to the concept. Now we have a similar return, but this time looking at different eras and characters every issue.

Kurt Busiek's classic miniseries of the 90s gets a thematic sequel featuring Marvel characters from all over time and space.
Kurt Busiek has given us many classic comics over the years. Astro City is a beautiful series that gave us one of the best comic book stories of all time with “The Nearness of You.” He was the man who created the Thunderbolts and blew everyone’s mind with that first issue reveal. He delivered the final, and maybe greatest, DC/Marvel crossover with Jla/Avengers. And who could forget the epic existence of The Adventures of Jell-O Man and Wobbly?
One of his most well-known works is his collaboration with Alex Ross: Marvels. The 1994 miniseries took a grounded look at the Marvel Universe, including the mutant situation, the coming of Galactus, and the death of Gwen Stacy. Just last year, they celebrated the 25th anniversary of the book.

Kurt Busiek's Vertigo superhero comic book series "Astro City" (1995) will be developed as a TV series, adapted by Busiek for Freemantle Media and producer Gregory Noveck ("Batman: Under the Red Hood"):
"..."Astro City" focuses on different groups and characters...
"...often taking the viewpoint of minor characters watching events unfoldnthrough their emotional and personal lives, in a universe of superheroes and villains.
"Everyone, at every turn, is supportive, helpful and completely focused on capturing the feel of 'Astro City'...bringing it to life as a TV show..."

Marvel is producing another fictional podcast in a partnership with Stitcher called Marvels. Marvel and Stitcher have already produced two podcasts called Wolverine: The Long Night and Wolverine: The Lost Trail. Both of those tell great stories and I’m looking forward to seeing how this new one turns out. It sounds like it’ll make for a great podcast series!
The series is part of the “celebration marking the 25th anniversary of Kurt Busiek and Alex Ross’ award-winning four-part comic book ‘Marvels,’ which was released to critical acclaim in 1994. Based on ‘Marvels,’ this podcast revisits the story of photojournalist, Phil Sheldon, as he navigates through the chaos caused by the Galactus invasion of New York City and explores what it means to be human in a universe inhabited by Super Heroes.”
The story for Marvels takes place in the aftermath of the Fantastic Four’s battle with Galactus, “high above New York City,...

The Marvel film cycle that began in 2008 with the first Iron Man movie, Marvel Studios’ first film, is coming to an end. This article avoids major spoilers, but let’s just say that death is the catalyst for this change. Avengers: Endgame is the 22nd film in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (or the McU), the movie universe inhabited by Marvel Studios franchise characters like Captain America, Thor, Iron Man, Black Widow, Ant-Man, Black Panther, Captain Marvel, and too many others to list them all.The main things to know before watching the new movie is that in Endgame’s predecessor, Avengers: Infinity War, the supervillain Thanos destroyed half of the universe in order to save the other half from overpopulation, which stretches the universe’s resources too thin. (I’m going to give these movies the benefit of the doubt and assume this sounds less ridiculous in context than it...

Which Marvel comics should you read before (or after) Captain Marvel? We have a definitive reading guide for you!
Get ready, Carol Corps! With Captain Marvel coming to the big screen, now is the perfect time to read up on her many adventures as an ace fighter pilot, head of Nasa security, Avenger, and more. Carol Danvers has had several different monikers and spent many years without a book of her own, so it can be hard to figure out where to start. This is by no means exhaustive – Carol’s tendency to crop up in other books and her time as an Avenger mean that she has spent time across the whole of Marvel. But if you want to get to know Carol Danvers and dive deeper into her past, these are her greatest hits.
