“He is in a lot of ways an Everyman, but he’s an unlikely one, and that’s how I see myself, too,” shares Eli Gelb about his character Grover in the new Broadway play “Stereophonic” by David Adjmi. The drama unfolds in a recording studio in the 1970s and the actor plays the sound engineer who has to help a band on the cusp of superstardom record their next album. The actor thinks that each of the seven characters in the play are “complex,” and of his in particular, he explains, “For as loveable as Grover is, he also isn’t perfect. It’s the 1970s, he’s a straight man, he’s pretty misogynistic when you meet him, and I think that’s important to acknowledge,” though he does prove to have “a good heart.” Watch our exclusive video interview above.

In the new Broadway show Stereophonic, the year is 1976 and a band on the verge of superstardom is recording their next album in Sausalito, California. We never learn the band’s name nor do we hear the single from their last album that just shot to Number One a year after its release, but over three hours, we get to know the weaknesses, fears, anxieties and hopes of all five members — and the two rookie engineers trapped in the studio with them for the next 12 months.

Arguably the best new American drama since Annie Baker’s The Flick, David Adjmi’s Stereophonic shares both a hyper-naturalistic style and a sprawling three-hour running time with that 2013 masterwork. But the similarities end there. Chronicling a turbulent year in California recording studios during which a fictional 1970s rock band labors over the follow-up to their breakthrough album, this is an immersive plunge into the fraught process of artistic collaboration as pressures mount and interpersonal harmony dissolves into acrimony.
Funny, raw and poignant in equal measure, this expertly sculpted play has the feel of both a behind-the-music docudrama and a lost Robert Altman film, with its astute microcosmic focus, its frequent wash of overlapping dialogue and its sly nudges toward satire. In fact, while the music — fabulous original songs written by Will Butler, formerly of Arcade Fire — is pop-rock rather than country, Stereophonic could almost be an expanded vignette lifted right out of Nashville.

Stereophonic, the hit Off Broadway play about a Fleetwood Mac-esque ’70s rock band, will begin its Broadway transfer a day earlier than planned, with previews at the Golden Theatre now set to start on Tuesday, April 2.
All tickets for the added performance will be priced at $40.
“When I was a small boy, my mother took me to Broadway shows every other week,” stated playwright David Adjmi. “She could afford to do this only because theatre was so much less expensive back then. The opening date of April 19 remains the same.
The additional preview date was announced today by producers Sue Wagner, John Johnson, Seaview, Sonia Friedman Productions, Linden Productions, and Ashley Melone & Nick Mills.

Exclusive: Comedic multi-hyphenate Julio Torres (A24’s Problemista) has struck a deal with Ars Nova, the Off-Broadway, non-profit theater in NYC, that will see them partner to identify, develop, and commission full-length projects from early-career comedy artists.
The collaboration further expands Ars Nova’s two-decade commitment to new comedy at a time when support systems for NYC-based artists have decreased. Under the partnership, Torres and Ars Nova will look to provide comedians with opportunities for development and production outside of the traditional model of sketch shows and 10-minute sets. They’ll offer funding up front to create brand new, uniquely theatrical shows, while providing mentorship and development resources to the artists involved, the first set for a commission being Ars Nova Vision Residency Alum River L. Ramirez. Others will be announced at a later date.
To celebrate the alliance, Torres will return to the Ars Nova stage on October 26 to host Showgasm.

The current revival of “Oklahoma!” scored the most Drama Desk love with a whopping 12 nominations. Not far behind was the stage adaptation of “Tootsie” with 11. Bu even with those tallies, Broadway shows were shut out in several top categories, including includes Lead Actor in a Play. That Tony Awards race may be stacked, but the Drama Desk nominating committee spurned big names like Bryan Cranston and Jeff Daniels and cited only Off-Broadway performances.
The vehicles for those two stars (“Network” and “To Kill a Mockingbird” respectively) similarly couldn’t crack the Best Play lineup. Despite a stellar year for new plays on Broadway, the only Tony eligible productions the Drama Desk voters invited to the party were Jez Butterworth’s Irish epic “The Ferryman” and Heidi Schreck’s acclaimed auto-drama “What the Constitution Means to Me” (which transferred from Off-Broadway within the same season).

Daniel Fish’s wildly re-imagined revival of Oklahoma! leads New York’s Drama Desk Awards nominations with 12, including Revival of a Musical. No big surprise there — but the head-scratcher came in the Best Play category: To Kill a Mockingbird, one of the best reviewed productions of the season and a box office smash, was snubbed. See the full list below.
Unlike the Tony Awards, though, the Drama Desk Awards cover both Broadway and Off Broadway, significantly lessening the nominations’ prediction factor. Mockingbird almost certainly will be among the nominees when the Broadway-only Tony roster is announced Tuesday.
Some other notable considerations for the Desk roster is that this season’s Broadway productions of Hadestown, Torch Song and Choir Boy were ineligible from some major overall categories because each had been staged in previous seasons as Off Broadway productions. Fred Written by Christopher Ford and Dakota Rose Directed by Dakota Rose Presented by On the Rocks Theatre Company at Dixon Place, NYC March 17-April 1, 2017
Dixon Place is a reliable venue for offbeat theater. If you're looking for, say, an earnest examination of twentysomethings trying to make it in the city, then it's probably best to look elsewhere. If, however, you're in the mood for sci-fi puppets or dance-filled reimaginings of Carroll's Wonderland, then Dixon Place has you covered. The latest of these unconventional offerings is Fred, a buoyant new comedy by Christopher Ford and Dakota Rose, creators of the recent The White Stag Quadrilogy.
Fred (Derek Smith) is a robot who began life as a pool vacuum and now spends his time keeping his inventor's widow, Diana (Shannon Holt), alive in a medically-induced coma since a long-ago stroke. Fred has decided to move with Diana from their home in Phoenix,...
