IFC Films has acquired the North American rights to “God’s Country,” a thriller and modern-day Western starring Thandiwe Newton that premiered at this year’s Sundance.
Julian Higgins directed the film that stars Newton as a reclusive college professor living in a small, Western town who gets into an escalating battle of wills with two locals who insist upon parking their truck and trespassing onto her land.
IFC Films plans to release “God’s Country” theatrically in fall 2022.
“God’s Country” is based on a short story called “Winter Light” by author James Lee Burke. Higgins and writer Shaye Ogbonna first adapted the story as a short film before expanding it as a feature, but this time turning the character into a Black woman and expanding the part and character’s backstory significantly.

The virtual Sundance Film Festival concluded with a virtual awards show — no host this year, just a series of statements and videos parceled out across two hours by Twitter. It was a strangely anti-climactic way of wrapping a low-key festival, while giving winners a chance to prep polite, crew-inclusive acceptance speeches.
Among the audience prizes, U.S. Dramatic winner “Cha Cha Real Smooth” represents the biggest sale of the festival so far, scooped up by Apple for $15 million — 1,000 times the budget of writer-director-star Cooper Raiff’s shoestring-budgeted debut, “Shithouse.”
The Festival Favorite award went to “Navalny.” This prize, selected by audiences from across all sections of the festival, recognizes a late addition to the lineup (“Navalny” was not announced until this past Monday), protected on account of its political sensitivity, as the documentary tracks Russian opposition leader Alexei Navalny while he was recovering from an assassination attempt in Berlin. What I’m about to tell you may come as a shock to you: Girls Fart, Too. That’s right, you heard it here first and we think it’s pretty funny also. That said, farting is not the reason Amanda Marshall and I decided to produce and partially finance “Swiss Army Man.” If you’ve seen the movie, you know it’s about two men stranded on an island where one of them is a corpse who constantly flatulates. You may be thinking, what on Earth would two women see...

Following a divisive premiere screening that saw more than 30 walkouts, the Paul Dano-Daniel Radcliffe movie “Swiss Army Man” has sold to A24, an individual familiar with the sale has told TheWrap. A24 acquired North American distribution rights in a low seven-figure deal, beating out several other distributors. The company plans to release the film this summer, when it will serve as counter-programming to all the big-budget blockbusters that crowd theaters that time of year. Music video directors Daniel Kwan and Daniel Scheinert directed the offbeat film, which was produced by Miranda Bailey, Lawrence Inglee, Lauren Mann, Amanda Marshall,...

Receiving wall-to-wall support from the Sundance Institute participating in a fivesome of labs all in 2014 (the January Screenwriters Lab, Directors Lab, Music and Sound Design Lab at Skywalker Sound, Creative Producing Summit and finally, the June Screenwriters Lab), music-video director (Foster the People and the Shins) tandem Dan Kwan & Daniel Scheinert made ’14 a true year to connect with the Sundance folk by submitting Possibilia (a 16 parallel universe world with Zoe Jarman and Alex Karpovsky playing tumultuous lovers) in the New Frontier section. Featured in Filmmaker Magazine Top 25 Faces, production on Swiss Army Man took place this past July and surely got submitted in rough form. While their trio noteworthy topliners in Daniel Radcliffe, Mary Elizabeth Winstead and Paul Dano suggest a certain clout, it’s the equal promise of visual cleverness (see this hypnotic award-winning video) and wide-ranging possibilities for where they might take the genre (it may draw comparisons...

Prior to his 2012 Sundance Institute supported/Sundance Film Festival debuted film based on both his one-man show and novel of the same name, we had no clue who Mike Birbiglia was or what kind of commune following he had. We quickly saw the genius in Sleepwalk with Me (here is our interview with him back in Park City). Fast-forward three years later and a massive fanbase to boot, we’ve been catching him in bit parts in Adult Beginners, Digging for Fire and this year’s Trainwreck until there was mention of Don’t Think Twice. With principal photography on this NYC shot sophomore film beginning in late August 2015, we might effectively be jumping the gun a little with an inclusion on the 2016 list but stranger things have happened.

My Girlfriend’s Boyfriend won’t be his next feature film project. Moving from the page to the stage and to the silver screen with Sleepwalk With Me, Mike Birbiglia will follow up his Sundance selected debut film with a sophomore film that promises to poke some serious fun at professional infighting and jealousy. Directing from his own script, Variety reports that Birbiglia’s the show-business dramedy titled Don’t Think Twice has began lensing in NYC with a cast comprised of Birbiglia himself, Keegan-Michael Key, Gillian Jacobs, Kate Micucci, Tami Sagher and Chris Gethard. Producers are Birbiglia, Cold Iron Pictures’ Miranda Bailey and Amanda Marshall (they knocked it out of the Park City park with The Diary of a Teenage Girl) and executive producers Ira Glass (who produced Birbiglia’s debut) and the mostly distributor, but sometimes production co. in Film Arcade’s J. So far, Rob Zombie directorial career has resulted in either terrible movies (House of 1,000 Corpses), movies that start strong than devolve into crap (2007's Halloween) or something of a mixed bag (The Devil's Rejects, The Lords of Salem). Or he makes The Haunted World of El Superbeasto, a nasty little bugger of a film where you'll want to stand in the shower for nine days after watching. How, then, this qualifies him to bring Groucho Marx's life story to the screen is anyone's guess, but stranger things have happened in Hollywood. As a matter of fact, looking into the details, Zombie's involvement begins makes a little more sense. amz asin="1593936524" size="small"The biopic, based on Steve Stolair's memoir "Raised Eyebrows: My Years Inside Groucho's House", will not span the comedic actor's whole career but rather his bizarre final ones as seen from his personal secretary/archivist and young fan's perspective.
