Filmmaker-producer Anand Gandhi, who is known for his films like ‘Ship of Theseus’, ‘An Insignificant Man’ and ‘Tumbbad’, has said that the Kannada sensation movie ‘Kantara’ celebrates toxic masculinity and narrow-mindedness.
Both the films share quite a few things in common such as both are rooted in folk tales, have been breakout hits that nobody really expected and present a story from particular regions of the states of Maharashtra (‘Tumbbad’) and Karnataka (‘Kantara’). But despite these similarities, Anand feels that the two films are largely different in their tone and the message that they wish to convey.
Taking to his Twitter handle on Saturday, Anand, who served as the creative producer on ‘Tumbbad’, wrote, “‘Kantara’ is nothing like ‘Tumbbad’. My idea behind ‘Tumbbad’ was to use the horror as an allegory of toxic masculinity and parochialism. ‘Kantara’ is a celebration of these (sic).”
However, the comment made by Gandhi has stirred a debate on Twitter.

Creators Neil Pagedar and Pooja Shetty of the new sci-fi comedy series "Ok Computer" feel it is time for us to become aware of how artificial intelligence is affecting life and lifestyle around us. "If science and technology is moving so fast, how quickly should civilisation, laws, lifestyle and structure change and be aware of these things? This was what we wanted to do with the show. The central premise of the show is that if AI kills a human being, who is to blame? Our life is surrounded by Artificial Intelligence. What will you do if your phone kills someone? These are very important and pertinent questions," said Shetty.
Can technology overpower human beings in future? "The question isn't really how or when technology will overpower humankind, the questions is what humankind intends to do with that technology. In the hands of an oppressor, even the most positive technology can turn into a weapon.

Mumbai, March 23 (Ians) Actor Jackie Shroff plays an au naturale cult leader in the upcoming series "Ok Computer". He says playing a character who is practically not wearing any clothes throughout the show comes with its set of challenges.
Jackie plays Pushpak, a cult leader who believes in being all natural all the time, and sans clothes too.
"Playing a character who is practically not wearing any clothes throughout the show comes with its own set of challenges, but one can overcome such challenges by giving the character your personal touch. I have tried doing exactly that. While Pushpak is an eccentric character on its own, I feel that a little touch of my personal eccentricity worked well for the character as well as the story," Jackie said.
"Ok Computer" is series written and produced by "Ship Of Theseus" maker Anand Gandhi, and directed by Pooja Shetty and Neil Pagedar.

Anand Gandhi’s debut feature “Ship of Theseus” is undoubtedly one of the finest Indian films of the last decade. It marked a significant shift in the perception of cinema in the country and was met with widespread critical acclaim at foreign film festivals. Gandhi’s magnum opus was awarded the National Film Award for Best Feature along with several other prestigious international accolades.
Although “Ship of Theseus” is a fascinating examination of contemporary Indian society, its grand vision is supported by a construct that is mythological in nature. Gandhi takes the eponymous paradox from Ancient Greece and transforms it into an inquiry of personal identity and post-humanism. The paradox famously asked whether a ship would remain the same if all its individual parts were replaced, begging the inevitable question: are we the sum of all our parts or is there something more to it?

Jackie Shroff is excited about playing an unusual character in the upcoming sci-fi comedy series, Ok Computer, which revolves around the concept of artificial intelligence (AI). Jackie essays a man who is against technology and is vehemently "one with nature".
"I was so intrigued by this role and this series, that I felt I should be wearing an outfit made of fallen leaves and flowers, but the creative team suggested the part about being bare naked, and I incorporated that into my character," he says.
"My character Pushpak understands technology as a necessity but not at the cost of harming or disrupting the environment. Along with technology, there should also be awareness about the environment for the sake of the next generation. I have really enjoyed playing this role. All the credit goes to my technicians and mainly the directors," adds Jackie.

Mumbai, March 10 (Ians) Filmmaker Anand Gandhi, who shot to fame as writer-director of the globally-acclaimed 2012 release "Ship Of Theseus", has scripted and produced the upcoming web series "Ok Computer".
Gandhi says his new effort, about artificial intelligence (AI), explores the "legal frameworks" that have to be put in place between "organic species" and the "cloud-based intelligence system". He says the advent of AI has changed a lot of things and the series talks about the co-existence of the two.
"We have witnessed, in the last couple of decades, the true potential of computers and AI in our lives, and how it has resulted in a huge number of human enterprises being replaced by computing and AI. By 2040, not only we are going to see AI perform basic tasks for us -- like finance, administration and logistics -- but we are really going to see AI surpass human imagination," said Gandhi,...

Mumbai, March 9: Radhika Apte, Jackie Shroff, Vijay Varma and Rasika Dugal will co-star in the sci-fi comedy web series titled Ok Computer.
The series deals with Artificial Intelligence and poses a relevant question whether AI can become a bane instead of a boon for humans in the near future. The six-episode web series showcases year 2031 where Homo-Sapiens deal with the Robo-Sapiens.
Anand Gandhi, who has co-written and produced the series, said, "Ok Computer is an attempt to imagine a world of our near-future together, and laugh out loud while we are at it. The show asks one of the biggest questions of this century: If AI commits a crime, who should be culpable? It asks this question with madcap humour, zany characters and a roller coaster epic story."
"It's been my privilege to offer unprecedented stories to Indian audiences. Ok Computer is a small step in a completely new direction.

Having in mind both India’s rich mythological heritage and the state of development of the country’s cinema, it is quite strange that the top-quality horror-fantasy works rarely come from the world’s second most populous country. However the trend can shift quickly since “Tumbbad” is one of the best and most efficient horror films seen in years. The critical response is good, the world premiere as the opening film of the last year’s edition of Venice Critics Week opened the possibilities for a long festival tour and the film was already released theatrically in India.

International premiere of “Flowers of Evil”, Hong Kong “Fagara” as the opening film, and Japanese “Bone Born Bone” at the closure of Five Flavours 13th edition!
This year, as always, the festival will provide an opportunity to discover original voices of young and recognized directors from South Korea, Bhutan, Thailand or Vietnam. We will explore the charms and ills of Japanese peripheries: its harbour cities, outskirts and marginal territories. We will watch films highly appreciated by festival juries. Special consideration will be given to Hong Kong which today is experiencing a serious political crisis: our guest will be Fruit Chan, a star of its independent cinema. However, the Programme has also a place for juicy genre cinema: horror, action, perverse comedies are an ideal remedy for the November weather in Warsaw.

“Miss Lovely” was the independent film from India that competed in the Un Certain Regard section of Cannes Film Festival in 2012. 2013 was one of the best years of the Indian history of independent cinemas.Even though the Indian independent cinema collective has made its presence felt in the beginning of 2000 itself, they were made to stay away with bowed heads out of an imposed inferiority of untouchability. However , the decisions of the national film award juries of 2013 brought them to the front rows. That year, Anand Gandhi’s “Ship of Theseus” was selected as the best film and Ashim Ahluwalia’s “Miss Lovely” got the special jury award for best film. These two films respectively got the award for the best female actor in a supporting role and best production design also.
Other than the year 2015 , all years that followed also were that of the success stories of the independent cinemas.

Rahi Anil Barve, Adesh Prasad and Anand Gandhi’s time-sprawling, mythological monster horror mixes ancestral fables and family drama for a fun and frightening cautionary tale, involving witches, demons and treasure hunting. The story follows Vinayak; a wily lad/ son of a scamp landlord in the antediluvian village of Tumbbad. We first meet Vinayak as a young boy obsessed with finding secret family treasure connected to his cursed grandmother. Vinayak later learns the gold is kept by a creature from hell in an ancestral temple. To make a withdrawal, he must outwit the demon or risk being eaten, murdered and cursed like his prematurely crumbling Nan.
Tumbbad, which is also the name of the village in which the film unfolds, is initially set in 1918. The script is then broken down into chapters, showing the protagonist at two other stages in his life, fifteen years apart. We see Vinayak learn about...

What on earth is this? This….this….magnificent creature masquerading as a movie haunts your senses for long after the closing images of raging destruction in the stunning finale
Little wonder that the incredible Anand Gandhi who created—no, I won’t use the mundane word ‘made’— the astonishing The Ship Of Theseus, is closely associated with Tumbbad. The visual imagery of this film is incomparable. Perhaps Sanjay Leela Bhansali on a particularly anxious night, would think up the visual language of Tumbbad. Raging and divine, Tumbbad looks like a universe that God created and forgot to put on the human map.
Feverish and fertile, this is a work of luminous lunacy. A parable on greed, lust and lustful greed this magical mystical film weaves layer after layer of drama based on illusion, subterfuge and self-delusion.

As the Hindu folktale at the start of Rahi Anil Barve and Adesh Prasad’s Tumbbad states: while the Goddess of Plenty birthed 160 million deities from her womb (Earth), the one she loved most is also the one that’s been erased from memory. His name is Hastar and he was her first. As such, he saw the wealth and food she provided mankind and coveted it for himself. He reached for the gold and his brothers and sisters allowed it for money was merely a vehicle for greed and unnecessary division. But when Hastar turned his sights on the wheat, they destroyed him before he could ever touch it. Unable to lose him forever, the Goddess of Plenty imprisoned him in her womb where he’s lived in shadows.
Nothing is ever truly expunged from history, however. Someone was bound to stumble upon Hastar’s name whether by divine fate or inspired imagination.

Shabana Azmi, Vidya Balan, Kangana Ranaut, Kiran Rao, Anupama Chopra and American filmmaker Ava DuVernay took part in a conversation on Women in Film that was powered by Lifebuoy and their initiative ‘Help a Child Reach 5’ that examined the position of women in film today.

Made by acclaimed director Anand Gandhi, the film which deals with the issue of infant mortality left the audience visibly touched. Well folks, after a rather long and brutal winter (at least for me here in Buffalo), we are finally heading into the wonderful warmth of summer, but with that blast of sunshine and steamy humidity comes the mid-year drought of major film fests. After the Sheffield Doc/Fest concludes on June 10th and AFI Docs wraps on June 21st, we likely won’t see any major influx in our charts until Locarno, Venice, Telluride and Tiff announce their line-ups in rapid succession. In the meantime, we can look forward to the intriguing onslaught of films making their debut in Sheffield, including Brian Hill’s intriguing examination of Sweden’s most notorious serial killer, The Confessions of Thomas Quick, and Sean McAllister’s film for which he himself was jailed in the process of making, A Syrian Love Story, the only two films world premiering in the festival’s main competition.

It should come as no surprise that Cannes Film Festival will play host to Kent Jones’s doc on the touchstone of filmmaking interview tomes, Hitchcock/Truffaut (see photo above). The film has been floating near the top of this list since it was announced last year as in development, while Jones himself has a history with the festival, having co-written both Arnaud Desplechin’s Jimmy P. and Martin Scorsese’s My Voyage To Italy, both of which premiered in Cannes. The film is scheduled to screen as part of the Cannes Classics sidebar alongside the likes of Stig Björkman’s Ingrid Bergman, in Her Own Words, which will play as part of the festival’s tribute to the late starlet, and Gabriel Clarke and John McKenna’s Steve McQueen: The Man & Le Mans (see trailer below). Tabu, a very old favorite of Gulzar and his family, is back in the family's fold. The actress who considers the poet-filmmaker her father-figure has starred in his last two directorial ventures Maachis and Hu Tu Tu. Tabu also played the lead in Gulzar Saab's daughter's directorial debut Filhaal. Now she's back in Meghna's new directorial project entitled Talwar. Tabu steps into a role originally offered to Shefali Shah. Talwar also stars Irrfan Khan and Sohum Shah, that wonderful actor from Anand Gandhi's Ship Of Theseus. Gulzar Saab's reticent daughter Meghna Gulzar began shooting for her third feature film on Tuesday morning with minimum fanfare. The project has been entitled Talwar and the film is said to be based on the Aarushi Talwar murder case. Apparently, Meghna's father has given the film its title; just as he has titled Megha's two earlier feature films Filhaal and Just Married.

Ghost Ship: Gandhi’s Debut an Enjoyably Philosophical Triptych
Finally seeing a release after its 2012 premiere, Anand Gandhi’s directorial debut, Ship of Theseus is an engaging philosophical exploration of, among many things, the meaning of life and discernable identity. Hardly as weighty or sententious as that sounds on paper, the film belongs to a growing cluster of recent independent offerings from India that exist far away from the realm of Bollywood, a fact that may conflate a struggle to find an audience. While a running time of nearly two and half hours may seem equally daunting, Gandhi, who also wrote the script, has created an intelligent, three pronged portrait of life in modern day Mumbai that neither taps into doldrums or dramatics. While it sometimes feels a bit heavy-handed, certain lengthy passages of dialogue and a uniting finale are two areas that may grate, it’s a grandly...
