Billed as Friday the 13th meets Glee, Stage Fright is a new take on the classic slasher formula which sees Kylie Swanson (Driver) brutally murdered after her star-making performance in the Broadway-bound musical ‘The Haunting of the Opera’. Ten years later, her producer Roger McCall (Loaf) is running a musical theatre summer camp where Kylie’s twins, Camilla and Buddy help out. When Roger decides to revive ‘The Haunting of the Opera’ kabuki-style for the end of term entertainment, Camilla wants her mother’s cursed role. But the masked Opera Ghost returns with rehearsals ready to break a leg and strike down the cast and its leading lady again…

Stage Fright
Starring Allie MacDonald, Meat Loaf, Douglas Smith, Minnie Driver, Kent Nolan, Melanie Leishman
Directed by Jerome Sable
Screenplay by Jerome Sable
2014, Canada
The horror genre has not exactly been a steady and stable movie-going experience for freshness or originality as of late. Nevertheless, the persistence to include any distinctive gimmick or angle just to distinguish these faceless frightfests from one another is indeed appreciated. In writer-director Jerome Sable’s Canadian creeper Stage Fright one can actually both cheerfully sing and scream for their supper in this entertaining off-kilter morbid musical of mayhem. Sable’s impishly dire slasher stage production does conjure up an interesting take on how to “kill a live audience”…or at least try not to be killed in front of this very same audience. No, the final curtain call for Stage Fright does not involve any of the obligatory stand-by sinister venues such as haunted houses,...

Last month, it had been announced that Magnet Releasing acquired Stage Fright ahead of its world premiere at SXSW. Directed by Jerome Sable, the horror musical takes place at a musical theater camp that is “terrorized by a blood-thirsty killer who hates musical theater.” Here’s a look at the red band trailer and new poster:
“Starry-eyed teenager Camilla Swanson wants to follow in her mother’s footsteps and become a Broadway diva, but she’s stuck working in the kitchen of a snobby performing arts camp. Determined to change her destiny, she sneaks in to audition for the summer showcase and lands a lead role in the play, but just as rehearsals begin, blood starts to spill, and Camilla soon finds herself terrified by the horror of musical theatre.”
Stage Fright stars Allie MacDonald, Douglas Smith, Brandon Uranowitz, Kent Nolan, Melanie Leishman, Minnie Driver, and Meat Loaf. If you’re headed to SXSW,...

"There has been an accident..." Magnet has debuted the first official red band trailer for the feature debut of Canadian filmmaker Jerome Sable, best known for his short The Legend of Beaver Dam, as well as a number of others. In the film, titled Stage Fright, Meat Loaf and Minnie Driver star in a wacky horror musical comedy set at a musical theater camp. I have a feeling this might end up being cult horror classic kind of material and I'm looking forward to seeing it, especially after this trailer. The kabuki seems a bit odd, but this still looks ridiculously campy and musically absurd, exactly what Sable promised to deliver. Here's the first red band trailer for Jerome Sable's feature debut Stage Fright, direct from Yahoo: Jerome Sable's Stage Fright tells the story of a snobby musical theater camp terrorized by a blood-thirsty masked killer who despises musical theatre.

I’ve waited for weeks to post this blog because I wanted some time to pass after Surveillance’s HDNet airings and limited theatrical run (the movie hits DVD & Blu-ray next Tuesday, August 18). I have some thoughts on the (admittedly small) gay content of the film, however that means laying out a spoiler minefield.
I still hold to the “no reviews” credo of this blog, but I promised to examine Glbt aspects of films with a critical, but fair, eye. Surveillance is, sadly, the only theatrically released film that’s given me any material lately, so I pulled out my microscope and did a partial post mortem.
Take me at my word on this one—this is not a review of the film. This is an examination of two scenes in the film and isn’t meant to be a comment on the quality of the movie as a whole.
